Shuttle Discovery Docks at Space Station

WASHINGTON - The White House said Thursday that Iran's incoming president was a leader of the student movement that orchestrated the capture of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, but the United States still hasn't determined whether he took hostages as alleged by some of those who were held.


Six former hostages have identified Iran's ultraconservative president-elect, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as one of their captors during the 444 days they were held.

Bush said on June 30 that their allegation "raises many questions." The U.S. government has been investigating since then.

"I don't think it should surprise anyone given the nature of the regime in Iran that he might have been involved in these kind of activities," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan.

But he said no determination has been made.

"We know he was a leader of the student movement that organized the attack on the embassy and the taking of the American hostages," McClellan said. "However, we are still looking into whether or not he was actually one of the hostage-takers. That is something we continue to look in to."

Militant students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on Nov. 4, 1979, and held the U.S. hostages in reprisal for Washington's refusal to surrender ousted Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi for trial. The shah had fled Iran earlier that year after he was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution.

The hostage crisis weakened then-President Carter, contributing to his re-election loss to Ronald Reagan.

Iran's Rafsanjani urges jailed writer's release

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani called on Thursday for the release of jailed journalist Akbar Ganji, whose family says has been on hunger strike for over six weeks, the official IRNA news agency said.


Ganji, an outspoken critic of the Islamic state's clerical leadership, was jailed in 2001 following a series of articles he wrote linking officials to the murder of political dissidents.

A former hardline Revolutionary Guard turned radical reformer, Ganji was rushed to a Tehran hospital last week.

Rafsanjani, who was president from 1989 to 1997, said he had been in talks with judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi over Ganji's release.

"I am very sad about Ganji's case. I have talked to top judiciary officials to solve the case," Rafsanjani said.

Senior judiciary officials have denied that Ganji is on hunger strike and say he was taken to hospital for knee surgery.

Under strong pressure of COC Netherlands which were followed by questions from the Democratic party D66, the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Office (IND)has decided to stop expulsion of homosexual asylum seekers to Iran immediately. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to start a thorough investigation to the position of homosexuals in Iran, after which the Country Report will possibly be adjusted. The IND will wait for the results of this report before taking further decissions on the expulsion of homosexual asylum seekers from Iran.

Chairman Frank van Dalen from COC Netherlands: "This is an important decision; while we were asking for attention for the executions, and many signed our petition, on Airport Schiphol an Iranian asylum seeker awaited his expulsion. This expulsion would have taken place this or next week. The homosexual man had been able to escape Iran in the late nineties. The Iranian court had called him to justify his visit to a gay party in front of the court. He has escaped, unlike his boyfriend who was hung in the late nineties. The official reading is that he was prosecuted for smuggling. If the IND now irrefutable declares this man homosexual, he will be saved from this destiny."

اين خبرگزارى افزود:"سخنرانى در سازمان ملل كه اولين سفر خارجى احمدينژاد نيز به شمار ميرود، به دليل حضور روساى جمهور كشورهاى سراسر جهان، همرمانى اين سفر با اوج گيرى تنشهاى ميان ايران و اروپا درباره مسائل هستهاى و طرح ديدگاههاى رئيس جمهور كشورمان در نزد سران كشورهاى جهان از اهميت فوق العادهاى برخوردار است."
براساس اين گزارش "احمدى نژاد قرار است در جريان اين سفر با ايرانيان مقيم آمريكا و نيز دولتمردان كشورهاى مختلف جهان ديدار كند."
"فارس" در پايان خبر خود آورده است: "پيش از اين برخى رسانههاى غربى از احتمال ديدار رئيس جمهور ايران با رهبران يهودى ايرانيتبار در جريان سفر به آمريكا خبر داده بودند."
گفتنى است در واكنش به اين "خبر" كه در سايت نزديك به محسن رضايى نيز انتشار يافت، سايت انصار حزب الله كه مدافع سرسخت رييس جمهور جديد است با لحنى خشماگين واكنش نشان داد و با تاكيد بر اين كه بازتاب مشخص نكرده است، چه وقت دكتر احمدينژاد چنين درخواست و علاقهاى براى ديدار با اسراييلى ها را مطرح كرده است؛ نوشت:"دكتر احمدينژاد بارها از حضرت امام خمينى رحمة الله عليه نقل قول كرده است كه اسرائيل بايد از بين برود و اسلام سنگرهاى كليدى دنيا را فتح خواهد كرد."
سايت "بازتاب" در حاشيه انتشار خبر ديدار احتمالى احمدى نژاد با رهبران يهودى نوشته بود:"ديپلماتهاى اسرائيلى كه اخبار مربوط به رايزنيهاى انجامشده براى ملاقات رئيسجمهور جديد ايران با رهبران يهودى ايرانى مقيم آمريكا را به تلآويو ارسال كردهاند، اين اقدام را به عنوان شوكى غافلگيركننده كه فضاسازيهاى صورتگرفته دربارهى احمدينژاد را فرو ميپاشد، ارزيابى كردهاند."

Iran demands EU make nuclear offer by August 1

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran demanded on Saturday that the European Union submit proposals in a dispute over its nuclear programme by August 1 rather than take a week longer.

The European Union -- represented by Britain, France and Germany -- is due to offer Iran a limited package of economic and political incentives to give up work that the United States suspects is a veil for efforts to build a nuclear bomb.

In return, the EU wants Iran to agree to maintain indefinitely its suspension of uranium enrichment, nuclear fuel reprocessing and related activities.

Ali Aghamohammadi, a spokesman for the Supreme National Security Council, said the parties had originally agreed an August 1 deadline, and that ambassadors for the "EU Three" had asked for this to be extended by six days.

"We reject any delay. We are expecting their proposals to be submitted on August 1 and it should meet Iran's minimum expectations," he told Reuters.

However, it was not clear whether Iran was using a tough stance over a matter of a few days to put pressure on the EU.

Diplomats in the EU Three capitals said they were not aware that the EU had committed itself firmly to August 1.

They said there had been an agreement at talks with Iran in Geneva last May that it would submit a proposal by the end of July or "early August".

Waiting until August 7 would allow the EU Three to present their offer after the inauguration of Iran's new president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on August 3.

Regardless of the date, diplomats have expressed little optimism that a deal can be done.

Ahmadi-Nejad: "Is There Art that Is More Beautiful, More Divine, and More Eternal than the Art of Martyrdom?"

The following are excerpts from a speech by Iranian President-Elect Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, which aired on Iranian Channel 1 on July 25, 2005.

Ahmadi-Nejad: We want art that is on the offensive. Art on the offensive exalts and defends the noble principles, and attacks principles that are corrupt, vulgar, ungodly, and inhuman.

Art reaches perfection when it portrays the best life and best death. After all, art tells you how to live. That is the essence of art. Is there art that is more beautiful, more divine, and more eternal than the art of martyrdom? A nation with martyrdom knows no captivity. Those who wish to undermine this principle undermine the foundations of our independence and national security. They undermine the foundation of our eternity.

The message of the (Islamic) Revolution is global, and is not restricted to a specific place or time. It is a human message, and it will move forward.

Have no doubt... Allah willing, Islam will conquer what? It will conquer all the mountain tops of the world.

دوشنبه 10 مرداد 84 در ادامه نا آراميهاى اخير شهرهاى كرستان سنندج نيز شاهد رويارويى مردم با نيروهاى سركوبگر رژيم اسلامى بود. مردم سنندج در پى پخش شدن اعلاميه در روزهاى گذشته به خيابانها آمدند و خشم و نفرت خود را از رژيم ضد مردمى حاكم اعلام كردند.
در اكثر نقاط شهر از جمله ميدان آزادي، ميدان انقلاب، خيابان فردوسي، ششم بهمن، شاهپور و ... مردم به درگيريهاى پراكنده با ماموران ميپرداختند و عليه رژيم شعار ميدادند. نيروهاى رژيم نيز خيابانهاى اصلى را بسته و اجازهى تردد ماشينها را نميدادند و به تهديد و ضرب و شتم مردم ميپرداختند و دهها نفر را نيز دستگير كردند كه از شمار دقيق آنها اطلاعى در دست نيست. ماموران براى ايجاد رعب و وحشت افراد دستگير شده را در داخل ماشينهاى يگان ويژه در مقابل چشم مردم با باتوم ميزدند.
تعداد زيادى مامور متعلق به يگان ويژه كرمانشاه نيز در ميان ماموران ديده ميشد. فقط در خيابان ششم بهمن تعداد ماموران به بيش از صد نفر ميرسيد. آنان با اتوبوس به محلهاى مختلف شهر برده ميشدند.
امروز تقريبا تمام مغازهها و بازار شهر تعطيل بود. در بعضى از پاساژهاى شهر نيز مردم به داخل رفته و در پاساژ را قفل زده بودند. و بعظا از داخل پاساژ شعار ميدادند.
اميدوارم مردم مظلوم كرد از حمايت مردم ساير شهرها بينصيب نمانند و اين جنبش با حمايت مردم ساير شهرها شكل تازهاى به خود بگيرد.

وزيركشور: همه واقعيتها رانگفتم اما دروغ هم به مردم نگفته ام

وزير كشور مي گويد: در دوران مسئولت در وزارت كشور تمامي واقعيت ها را به مردم نگفته ام اما دروغ نيز هيچگاه به مردم نگفته ام. عبدالواحد موسوي لاري روز دوشنبه در مراسمي كه به مناسبت پايان فعاليت دولت در وزارت كشور برگزار شد، افزود: سعي مي كنم در آينده واقعيت ها را بگونه اي بيان كنم كه اگر همه واقعيت ها را نمي توان گفت، حداقل تاريخ تحريف نشود

سيد محمد خاتمي نهاد رياستجمهوري را به دگتر احمدينزاد، تحويل گرد. سيد محمد خاتمي و دگتر محمود احمدينزاد رييسجمهور پس از مراسم تنفيذ در نهاد رياستجمهوري حضور يافتند.

خاتمي و احمدينزاد را مديران، گارگنان و حفاظت نهاد رياست جمهوري همراهي ميگردند.

در اين مراسم گوتاه، خاتمي و احمدينزاد پس از گذشتن از زير قرآن گريم، وارد نهاد رياستجمهوري شدند و دقايقي به صورت ايستاده دست در دست يگديگر و همچنين نشسته به گفت و گو پرداختند. همچنين مديران نهاد رياستجمهوري با خاتمي آخرين عگسهاي يادگاري خود را گرفتند.
