British Arabism
An in-depth understanding of the British sponsorship of Arab separatism in Iran requires an understanding of British Arabism in its entirety. Francis Fukuyama, in his description of the American Arabists, opines that they are "... a sociological phenomenon ... Arabists not only take on the cause of the Arabs, but also the Arabs' tendency for self-delusion".

That tendency for self-delusion is vividly expressed by the main tenets of Arab nationalism, which views all non-Arab Muslim peoples as subsidiary to the Arab language and culture. Moreover, Robert Kaplan observes that psychologically the English-speaking Arabist is "obsessed with the Arabs ... a defining Arabist trait". This psychological process is subsumed under British commercial and political interests. This is vividly exemplified in the case of T E Lawrence, as defined by Kaplan (1993): "Lawrence ... among Arabs in the desert ... became pro-Arab; in Whitehall he was pro-Empire."

British Arabism can trace its origins to geopolitical imperialism, namely the need to project political, economic, and if necessary, military power into Persia. The first official Arabists are Sir Charles Lyall (1845-1920) and William Muit, both civil servants of the British East India Company.

Lyall published works on Arabic literature, including pre-Islamic odes, while Muit wrote extensively about the Arab caliphate. It is difficult to ascertain why they were so keenly interested specifically in Arabic, as Arabic, along with Persian and Sanskrit, had been banned from India's educational system since the 1830s. Another early Arabist was a Cambridge professor, E H Palmer, whose knowledge of Arabic was useful in his role as a secret agent in Egypt, where he died in action in August 1882.

It was in the Arab Bureau of Cairo, however, where British Arabism was formally implemented as a tool for the advancement of British geopolitical and economic interests. The Arab Bureau was set up on February 4, 1916. It was from here that the British coordinated their activities with the local Arab sheikhs of the Persian Gulf.

Their main mission by World War I was to foster an Arab rebellion by way of the invention of Arab nationalism, a domain viewed as a "product" by the British Foreign Office and the Arab Bureau. The primary objective was to accomplish the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Arab nationalism, since the conclusion of World War I, has been encouraged to focus itself against Iran, an ideological proclivity that was taken to its logical extremes by the Ba'athist regime of Saddam Hussein.

Today, the Arab Bureau survives in the form of various innocuous-sounding organizations, namely the Arab-British Center, the CAABU (Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding), the Arab-British Charitable Trust, the Labor Middle East Council, the Anglo-Arab Association and (until 1979) MECAS (Middle East Center for Arab Studies).

While British Arabism has penetrated many sectors of British national life, it is particularly influential in the intelligence, academic and media fields. It is interesting to note that British academic Arabists do not focus on the entire Arab world, which includes Egypt and Libya. Instead, the British academic Arabists have been almost exclusively preoccupied with the eastern Arab world, which is contiguous to Iran (historical Persia) and the Persian Gulf, areas rich in fossil fuels and hence of prime importance to British economic and commercial interests.

OK im warning you, this post contains swearing. I tried, I honestly did, but could not stop myself from exploding with outrage.

First of all who in the ****ing hell do these Arabists think they are. Khuzestan has had ancient Iranian civilization heritage since at least 5000BC. From Elam to the Hakhamanishi. Kuroush ruled over Anshan and called himself King of Anshan before he was king of the entire empire. No way we are gonna give up this land to a bunch of desert nomads who wandered into our territory. When you move to another country, you abide by their laws.

What's even more disappointing is the lack of support by Iranians against these actions. I mean, that stupid son of a bitch Ahmadinejad, still supports Arabism in Palestine. DOnt you get the picture, Arabs dont care about Iran, why do we try so hard to support them. The only people we need to support are Iranians.

Also dont look to the west for help. Like the article states the British, as well as the Americans, support these mother****ers, because of purely political reasons.

THEY DONT WANT IRAN UNITED. THEY WANT IRAN DIVIDED AMONGST ITS GROUPS INTO SMALL PITIFUL NATIONS.

Bottom line Iranians need to come together and support Iranians.

Dont expect the British to be your allies
Dont expect the Arabs to be your allies
Dont expect other Muslims to be your allies
Dont expect the Americans to be your allies
Dont expect the mullahs in our own gov't to be your allies. They support Arabization of Iran!

After killing almost a million people in trying to annex Khuzestan during the Iran-Iraq war, mutant remnants of Sheikh Khaz'al demagoguery are scurrying around trying to disintegrate Iran once again. Now we have the Canadian Foreign Minister Pierre Stewart Pettigrew meeting with the leaders of the "Al-Ahwaz" grouplet , officially endorsing their position.

This is what happens when thousands of competent conscientious technocrats from all parts, minorities, and political affiliations are banned from running for offices in Iran, and replaced instead by a posse of religious retrogrades who refuse the sacraments of free-thinking, and who have absolutely no clue how to run a country based on contemporary standards.

I have great respect for people like Majlis Speaker Haddad Adel. He was my literature teacher in high school, and a very good one. But it vexes me to see that the non-plebiscitary vision of the likes of him puts other things higher in priority than Iran itself.

It is from the vacuum created by Iran's dogmatic policies that ill wishers get the chance to bring harm to Iran-zameen, now in the form of a newly propped up factitious secessionist clangor in Khuzestan. The revisionists are hard at work to change our history and to put an end to Iran as we know it.

Take for instance a look at Lessons of Modern War- Volume II: The Iran-Iraq War, (online version), a book coauthored with Abraham R. Wagner, which is regarded as an academic source of reference on the Iran-Iraq war and "the question of Khuzestan". Allow me to quote some passages:

1. "The Persianization of Khuzistan had also had considerable success". p3
2. "Iran had had half a century to 'Persianize' the area and a strong incentive to do so". p2

So Khuzestan "was Persianized". I suppose these sources forget that the Sassanid capital Ctesiphon was inside today's Iraq, and that the Arabs invaded Iran, not the other way around. Jundishapur was in Khuzestan, not in Hijaz (the real Arabistan).

3. "When the Treaty of Lausanne establish[ed] Iraq as a state in 1923, it paid no attention to the issue of 'Arabistan' at all. The entire area was assumed to be part of Persia". p2

"Was assumed". That's factualizing that "Arabistan" is actually a real entity.

4. "Something approach[ing] a separate "Arabistan" did exist in southwest Iran between roughly 1690 and 1923". p2

Well, something approaching Iran exists today in Khuzestan. And if you wish to take the road of a historical argument, then we can talk about the Elamites, who ruled Khuzestan for thousands of years, were a non-semitic people, and who were precursors to the Persian Empire.

It's a good thing that even Saddam wasn't able to destroy that magnificent Ziggurat near Susa, where Ashurbanipal bitterly wrote:

"Susa, the great holy city, abode of their Gods, seat of their mysteries, I conquered. I entered its palaces, I opened their treasuries where silver and gold, goods and wealth were amassed... I destroyed the ziggurat of Susa. I smashed its shining copper horns. I reduced the temples of Elam to naught; their gods and goddesses I scattered to the winds. The tombs of their ancient and recent kings I devastated, I exposed to the sun, and I carried away their bones toward the land of Ashur. I devastated the provinces of Elam and on their lands I sowed salt."(photo)

Note the key word "their". Susa was never part of any other civilization to begin with. It belonged to Iran.

5. "In 1924, [Reza Khan] put down all Arab resistance in "Arabistan" and changed the name to Khuzistan". p2

"Changed the name", as if he invented it. I wonder then what the 8th century historian Ibn Muqaffa means when he says:

"The Iranian languages are Fahlavi, Dari, Khuzi, Farsi, and Seryani,... where Khuzi is the unofficial language of the royalty".

"Khuzi". And where did this royalty live? Susa, smack in the middle of Khuzestan.

6. "On November 30, 1971 -- the day before the British left the Gulf ñ the Shah seized three strategic islands in the lower Gulf which were owned by the UAE. This seizure led Iraq to sever diplomatic relations with Iran". p7

7. "For an excellent description of the issues involved, and their history, see Daniel Pipes: A Border Adrift: Origins of... "

How absurd a policy Iran must have that even pro-Israeli authors are supporting Arab causes against Iran.

This is why Iran needs Israel as a friend. As long as this brainless Tel Aviv-Tehran enmity exists, the likes of Daniel Pipes will be presented as academic references for Iran. I have never understood Iran's policy of supporting "fellow muslim Arab brothers" at the cost of being confronted by Israel and the US, and then being stabbed in the back by the same Arabs. How asinine is that?

8. "It is important to note that the fact Iraq invaded Iran is not prima facie evidence of aggressive intent or guilt for the war. The creation of a contingency capability to invade Iran cannot, under the circumstances, be regarded as a premeditated effort to either invade or dominate Iran". p16

Ah yes, exculpation of Iraq to lend legitimacy to the sinister "Al-Ahwaz" dagger. After tens of thousands of Iranian casualties from Iraq's Chemical weapons, "no guilt"? Sweet.

But no, lobotomizing the hoi polloi is the profession of these pundit revisionists. But then again, who instigates them?

Nevertheless the damage has been done. Amnesty is now making a big fuss about it and the presstitutes are jumping at this new opportunity to spread outrageous mendacities (example link). Shutting down Al-Jazeera's branch in Iran won't stop them from disseminating new lies about "80 years of Iranian occupation in Al-Ahwaz" either. After all, millions are being spent just to fabricate these lies.

Maybe it's time the beard-wielding political cronyist dolts in Iran woke up and realized that Iran's integrity is in danger as a result of their fatuous views. Maybe instead of submitting idiotic proposals such as a new national dress code, they will start tending to de-centralization projects so that oil-rich but poverty-stricken regions like Khuzestan wont become grounds for the latest ploy of Iran's enemies.

Is it not time to accept Iran's interests on par with "Islam"? When will we see a stop to the brain drain exodus of Iran's best talents? When will we see a stop to the oligarchic screening and filtering of millions who aspire to serve Iran? Is it then an accident that we see literally hundreds of Iranians serving as Chairs, Directors, Deans, and CEOs of companies outside Iran instead of serving their own country? I think not.

May God save me when I go back to Iran this summer.

The British Ahwazi Friendship Society was set up to promote solidarity and understanding between Europe and the Ahwazi Arab people.

Working with civil society organisations, the BAFS lobbies the British parliament, the European Union and the United Nations to bring attention to the plight of the Ahwazis. We work in partnership with democratic secularist Ahwazi groups, including the Ahwaz Studies Centre, the Ahwaz Human Rights Group and the Democratic Solidarity Party of Al-Ahwaz.

We also aim to bring education and skills to the Ahwazi diaspora, particularly in the UK, which is home to 3,000 Ahwazi Arabs. Our main focus is promoting an independent Ahwazi media by channelling grants to the Al-Ahwaz satellite television station and training Ahwazis in broadcast and print journalism.

We do not support separatism and oppose any invasion of Iran by foreign forces.

We condemn all forms of terrorism and have no links to any armed group.

We believe that through national non-violent civil disobedience supported by global solidarity, the people of Ahwaz and the rest of Iran can build a democratic and tolerant Iran where no-one is subject to persecution, racism or oppression on the grounds of race, religion, language or gender.

We uphold the notion of Iran as a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country and believe that decentralisation, federalism and regional autonomy is essential to democracy in Iran.

Iran has publicly hanged four men convicted of taking part in deadly bombings in the south-western city of Ahwaz last year.
The blasts at a bank and the office of the governor killed eight people and injured at least 45 others.

Iran originally blamed British troops based just over the border in Iraq.

Ahwaz, in Khuzestan province, is home to a large community of ethnic minority Arabs and has simmered with anti-government tension since 2005.

The executions were carried out at the city's jail in front of the victims' families.

Last month Iran said it had hanged three people convicted of involvement in the attacks.

In November 2005 protests erupted in Ahwaz after ethnic Arabs accused authorities of discrimination.

Two other people have already been executed over attacks in Ahwaz in October of the same year that killed six people and wounded almost 100 more.

A Shia cleric known for his stance against Wahhabism, a strict version of Sunni Islam, has been killed in the south-western Iranian city of Ahwaz.
Reports said Hojjat ol-Eslam Hesham Seymari was shot dead in his home at night by two men claiming to know him.

Wahhabism is practised throughout the Arabian Peninsula, most notably by the ruling family of Saudi Arabia.

Ahwaz, home to a large community of ethnic minority Arabs, has seen much anti-government tension since 2005.

Iran has publicly hanged 10 men convicted of taking part in a series of deadly bombings in the city last year, which were blamed on Arab separatists allegedly backed by the UK.

The separatists have accused Iran's Persian majority of discrimination.

'Martyrdom'

Reporting Hojjat ol-Eslam Seymari's death on Tuesday, the hardline Iranian newspaper Keyhan described the cleric as a "skilful speaker who brought awareness to the youth about deviating movements, especially Wahhabism".

Hojjat ol-Eslam Seymari supervised 20 mosques and "stood against the Wahhabis' investment and strong onslaught in the city of Ahvaz", the paper added.

The representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in Khuzestan Province said the cleric had been martyred "at the hands of the mercenaries of Satan".

"Our enemies should know that his martyrdom will guide the nation, keep alive the values and principles of the exalted Muslim faith," Mohammad Ali Jazayeri said in a statement.

"Islam will remain alive and the enemies of Islam will die and receive a fitting punishment."

Wahhabism was founded by Mohammed Bin Abdul-Wahhab in 18th Century Arabia as an Islamic reform movement which felt that the local practice of Islam had lost its original purity.

The movement formed an alliance with the founders of the Saudi dynasty which continues today. A modern militant version of Wahhabism is espoused by Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda organisation.

Followers do not describe themselves as Wahhabis, preferring the term Tawhid to describe their movement. Some view Shia Islam as a heterodox sect.

TEHRAN (AFP) - An Iranian Shiite cleric known for his anti-Wahhabi activities has been assassinated in the restive city of Ahvas, in an area that is home to a substantial Arab community, a press report said Tuesday.

"Hojjatoleslam Hesham Seimori, the combatant cleric and Shiite scholar, was shot dead by two men who turned up at his house on motorbikes around 10 at night claiming to know him," the hardline Kayhan newspaper said.

Kayhan said Seimori was a "skillful speaker who brought awareness to the youth about deviating movements especially Wahhabism", a branch of conservative Sunni Islam practised in the Arabian peninsula.

The cleric was tasked with supervising 20 mosques and "stood against the Wahhabis' investment and strong onslaught in the city of Ahvaz," it said.

Ahvaz is the capital of the oil-rich Khuzestan province, which lies near the Iraqi border and is home to a Sunni Arab minority -- about three percent of the 70-million population -- in Shiite majority Iran.

Iran has hanged 10 men for carrying out 2006 deadly bomb attacks in Ahvaz, which were blamed on Arab separatists backed by Britain, whose troops are stationed across the border in Iraq. Britain denies the allegation.

Iran frequently accuses Britain and the United States of inciting unrest and backing rebels in its border provinces inhabited by ethnic and religious minorities.
