1983

A lot of software is out there now, and the primary marketplace for it is the PC. Right now, the percentage is very much skewed toward that one machine [the IBM PC], but that will change, although it will probably never drop below 50 percent."

"We believe there'll soon be a time when many organizations will have a PC on every desk. We need two key ingredients before that can happen--a graphical user interface, in part to take advantage of advances like larger screen, new chips, and laser printers; and networking. People will start to see the benefit of applications that run in a distributed way.

A year from now all PCs sold will be 286-based. Within three years we'll see them become 386-based. Today, we really don't trust the machine in terms of its storage capacity (or the ease of getting at programs) to the extent that we keep data on it long term... Eventually, companies will hand out programs tailored for the work they do. Standard applications and hardware will improve dramatically to a point where they'll help promote PC use. People will feel that if they don't have a PC, they can't be as productive.

We haven't seen a super-small machine with only ten non-memory chips, a chip display with 1000-by-1000-pixel resolution, or a variable-frequency monitor. But we'll get there in the next three years. People in word processing will look at the 640 by 200 we have today and wonder what we were doing--it's like a hammer and a chisel."

His favorite program: "Excel. It is a program that you appreciate more and more as you use it. I use Word often, but since it can't be programmed, it doesn't tap my creativity in the same way."

His most significant accomplishment: "Helping to create a workstation standard with MS-DOS so that the same programs can run on millions of machines. When I was 16, working day and night on a FORTRAN compiler, I realized that hundreds of programs had been written before and mine might not be the best. But they all had to be written because there were so many different instruction sets and operating systems. I wondered then if there was some way to eliminate the wasted effort and get fewer but better programs. Accomplishing that is something I feel good about."

"The work group is a growing phenomenon that will drive the use of PCs... All [future] Microsoft applications will be workgroup applications, and [Windows for Workgroups] is a way for that to come true before we get to their next revisions."

تعدادي از اين نقايص که در سيستم عامل اجرايي ويندوز و نرم افزار آفيس يافت شده است به سارقان اينترنتي و کاربران بدانديش اجازه مي دهد کنترل يک رايانه شخصي را از راه دور در دست گيرند. از ميان اين 5 آسيب جدي ، 2مورد از آنها سيستم عامل اجرايي ويندوز و 3 مورد ديگر نرم افزار آفيس را تهديد مي کند. 2 مشکلي که نسبت به ديگر موارد از اهميت بيشتري برخوردار است ، ايجاد دستورالعمل و رمزهاي کنترل از راه دور است که در سيستم عامل اجرايي ويندوز رخ مي دهد و مي تواند از طريق برنامه هاي مخرب رايانه اي يا ويروس هاي رايانه اي بدون آگاهي يا اطلاع کاربر مورد استفاده سارقان اينترنتي قرار گيرد. يکي از اين آسيبها در بخشي موسوم به mailslotيا انباره موقتي ذخيره اطلاعات واقع شده است ، نرم افزارهايي که تحت تاثير اين عوامل آسيب رسان قرار گرفته اند عبارتند از ويندوز 2000، ويندوز XP1 و ويندوز سرور 2003. دومين عامل آسيب رسان در بخش ثبت استاندارد نشاني هاي اينترنتي در NTاختلال ايجاد مي کند.
سيستم عامل NT که به وسيله شرکت مايکروسافت عرضه شده است در سيستم هاي شبکه مورد استفاده قرار مي گيرد و با تعيين نشاني هاي اينترنتي ايجاد ارتباط ميان شبکه هاي رايانه اي مستقل را مقدور مي سازد.
اين عامل خطرساز حتي بدون اين که کاربر از وجود آن آگاهي داشته باشد نيز قابل راه اندازي است.
پيش از اين در ماه ژوئيه کاربران با مشکل امنيتي در اجراي برنامه اکسل مواجه شده بودند که کاربران را در معرض خطر کنترل از راه دور به وسيله کاربران غيرمجاز و ارسال برنامه هاي مخرب اينترنتي قرار مي دهد و در اجراي اين نرم افزار اختلال ايجاد مي کند.
در ماه ژوئن اين شرکت يک مجموعه نرم افزاري اصلاحي در اختيار کاربران قرار داده است که در مجموع 21 مشکل مشاهده شده در اجراي برنامه ها را تحت پوشش قرار مي دهد و کليه نقايص و عيوبي که هنگام اجراي ويندوز، Word، نرم افزار جستجوگر اينترنتي ، Powerpoint و تبادل اطلاعات در شبکه هاي اينترنتي کاربر را در معرض آسيب قرار مي دهد، در اين مجموعه قرار گرفته است.
با وجود اين ، چنين شرکتي چون مجبور است به محض بروز هرگونه مشکلي براي کاربر در حين ارتباطات در شبکه هاي اينترنتي ، يک نرم افزار اصلاحي براي آن عرضه کند در موقعيت بسيار دشواري قرار گرفته است.

اصل سوم: پس از فارغ*التحصيل شدن از دبيرستان و استخدام، کسي به شما رقم فوق*العاده زيادي پرداخت نخواهد کرد. به همين ترتيب قبل از آن*که بتوانيد به مقام معاون ارشد، با خودرو مجهز و تلفن همراه برسيد، بايد براي مقام و مزايايش زحمت بکشيد.

اصل چهارم: اگر فکر مي*کنيد، آموزگارتان سختگير است، سخت در اشتباه هستيد. پس از استخدام شدن متوجه خواهيد شد که رئيس شما خيلي سختگيرتر از آموزگارتان است، چون امنيت شغلي آموزگارتان را ندارد.

اصل پنجم: آشپزي در رستوران*ها با غرور و شأن شما تضاد ندارد. پدر بزرگ*هاي ما براي اين کار اصطلاح ديگري داشتند، از نظر آنها اين کار «يک فرصت» بود.

اصل ششم: اگر در کارتان موفق نيستيد، والدين خود را ملامت نکنيد، از ناليدن دست بکشيد و از اشتباهات خود درس بگيريد.

روز گذشته، بيل گيتس در سخناني كه اغلب رسانه*هاي گروهي ايالات متحده*ي آمريكا به انعكاس آن پرداختند، با شديدترين شكل ممكن سياست*هاي انقباضي جمهوري*خواهان را در اعمال محدوديت بر صدور ويزا و افزودن مقررات دست و پاگير مهاجرتي محكوم كرد. وي با تحليل روند كاهش جريان فراگيري نوجوانان و جوانان آمريكايي در سطوح متوسطه و دانشگاهي نسبت به همتايان اروپايي، هشدار داد كه دولت فدرال بايد هر چه در توان دارد براي جبران اين عقب*ماندگي و تسهيل جريان جذب نخبگان، به ويژه از كشورهاي هند و چين، به كار بندد.
مي*دانيد چرا؟!
پاسخ ساده است؛ امروزه ما در جهاني زيست مي*كنيم كه به «دانايي» چون يك محصول نگاه مي*كنند و تجارت محصولات دانايي هر روز از اهميتي بيشتر برخوردار مي*شود.
چنين است كه در آن سوي آب وقتي مي*شنويم: مايكروسافت به عنوان باارزش*ترين شركت جهان در آغاز سال 2000 برگزيده شد، كسي تعجب نكرد. هرچند كه شايد مجموع دارايي*هاي فيزيكي آن شركت (يعني ساختمان، تجهيزات، مبلمان و امثال آن) به 10 ميليارد دلار هم نمي*رسيد (معادل يك پنجم حجم سرمايه*گذاري صورت گرفته تنها در ميدان نفتي پارس جنوبي)! چرا كه ارزش دارايي واقعي اين شركت در سرمايه*هاي دانايي و سرمايه*هاي فكري، توانايي رهبري، مالكيت معنوي، ظرفيت سازماني، دانايي جمعي كاركنان، رابطه با تأمين*كنندگان، شهرت نزد مشتريان و نظارت دقيق بر سامانه*هاي عملياتي PC و امثال آن بود؛ گنج ارزشمندي كه در آن زمان معادل 50 برابر دارايي*هاي فيزيكي مايكروسافت ارزشگذاري شد.
اينها دارايي*هايي هستند ناملموس كه در عصر حاضر ثروت*آفرينند. كافي است بدانيم مايكروسافت براي حفظ اين پيشگامي، به راحتي بيش از 3 ميليارد دلار در سال را صرف جذب بهترين مغزها در شركت خويش مي*كند.

مي*بينيد! دنياي 21 و انقلاب ديجيتال، اين گونه قاعده*ي بازي را تغيير داده است. امّا در اين سوي آب، به راحتي بيش از يك ميليارد دلار ابزار و وسايل پيشرفته از خارج وارد مي*كنيم؛ ابزارهايي كه بسياري از آنها – به گفته*ي دكتر رضا منصوري - عملاً بلااستفاده باقيمانده*اند و مي*پنداريم كه ابزارها كشور را ثروتمند خواهند ساخت و در عوض به آساني از كنارِ خروج سرمايه*هاي انساني خويش به ارزش 38 ميليارد دلار در سال عبور كرده و ناگهان خويش را در ميان 141 كشور مهاجر*فرستِ دنيا، حايز رتبه*ي نخست مي*بينيم!
خواستم بگويم: چيزي كه اقتدار ملّي ما را نشانه رفته است، همين سهل*انگاري و نابخردي غم*انگيزي است كه سبب شده به جاي كوشش براي جذب نخبگان خويش، درصدد توليد بيشتر چند قلم از محصولات زراعي، آن هم به بهاي خدشه واردساختن بر امنيت بوم*شناختي (اكولوژيك) كشور برآييم؛ امنيتي كه اگر به مخاطره بيافتد، با اتكا به بزرگترين سپر هسته*اي و بيشترين توان نظامي هم نمي*توان مخاطراتش را براي نسل فردا جبران كرد.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Apple chief executive Steve Jobs have appeared on stage together for the first time in more than two decades.

Billed as a public "conversation" between two giants of the computer industry, the event at the All Things Digital conference, hugely anticipated by technology buffs, was seen as a long overdue opportunity for two of the greatest pioneers in the industry to go head to head.

But would they re-live old feuds or shuffle uncomfortably in their seats if touchy subjects cropped up?

It was not to be. The question and answer session at the D: All Things Digital conference, turned out to be more of a love-in between old pals.

The pair reminisced about how their respective businesses had grown over the years.

Steve Jobs jokes

Asked what Gates' contribution to computing had been, Jobs said: "Bill built the first software company before anybody in our industry knew what software was, and that was huge."

Returning the compliment, Gates said Jobs' development of the Apple II computer in 1977 "was an incredibly empowering phenomenon."

Changed little

Apart from a few wrinkles and receding hair, both Gates and Jobs seem to have changed little over the years - especially in the style department. Jobs, the showman, appeared unshaven in his trademark black turtleneck, jeans and trainers.

The more reserved Gates wore a striped, button-down shirt, slacks and black shoes.

Perhaps the most uncomfortable moment for the Microsoft chairman was when Apple's current series of TV ads was introduced into the discussion.

The Mac vs PC commercials portray the PC as a somewhat portly and decidedly inept character.

Jobs, rather unconvincingly, said the point of the ads was not to be mean, rather for the guys to like each other.

Grimacing somewhat, Gates defended the PC character:

"His mother loves him."

Asked to describe their visions of the future, Gates said in five years time, people would not depend on a single computer. They would have multiple devices, such as a tablet with "voice and ink", along with "a phone, a pocket-sized device".

Jobs predicted an "explosion" of what he described as "post-PC devices", such as the iPod.

He said such devices represented "a clean slate" that lacked the legacy of many applications and are more focused.

"But you have to temper it, because you have users who don't want a car with six wheels," he added.

The event also generated some quick-witted humour. Asked to define the greatest misunderstanding in their relationship, Steve Jobs said: "We've kept our marriage secret for over a decade now."

Responding to a question from the audience about his charitable work, the Microsoft chairman said developing the PC had led him to create his charitable foundation to benefit people "who haven't had technology, including medicine, working for them".

The discussion ended with Gates predicting that things that are currently the stuff of science fiction will, eventually, come true.

It was session that clearly inspired the audience of computer professionals and enthusiasts.

"I thought it was a moment of distilled history," said Nina Lytton, a computer consultant.

"It telescoped their experience as friends, partners, competitors and creative problem solvers over a 30-year period."

Arthur Ceria, who works for a start-up company in San Francisco, described the conversation as "inspiring and historical".

"You had two of the biggest figures in Silicon Valley coming together and giving us their insight... here they are as myth and gods and the audience was there to witness that."

وي به نقل از روزنامه THE Crimson دانشگاه هاروارد، موفقترين دانشجوي «ترک تحصيلي» اين دانشگاه هاروارد بوده است كه سرانجام در سن 51 سالگي موفق به اتمام تحصيلات خود شد.

بيل گيتس در سخنراني که به مناسبت جشن فارغ التحصيلي دانشجويان دانشگاه هاروارد برگزار شد، سخنان خود را در خطاب به پدر خود اين طور آغاز کرد : پدر، من 30 سال منتظر بودم تا به تو بگويم که تحصيلاتم را به پايان خواهم برد.

وي در اين سخنراني به توصيف دوران تحصيل خود پرداخت که چگونه سراسر شب را به بحث مي پرداخته و بيشتر از آنکه به دوستان دانشگاهيش فکر کند، به همکاران و دوستان محل کاري فکر مي*کرده و روزها در کلاسها و سمينارهايي حاضر مي*شد که اصلا براي آن کار نمي*کرد

Bill Gates gets his Harvard degree after 30 years

Bill Gates had to attend some unfinished business last week. Gates, who dropped out of Harvard and co-founded Microsoft to become the world’s richest person, stopped off at his former stomping grounds to collect an honorary law degree.

“We recognize the most illustrious member of the Harvard College class of 1977 never to have graduated from Harvard,” said Harvard University Provost Steven Hyman. “It seems high time that his alma mater hand over the diploma.”

“I’ve been waiting for more than 30 years to say this, Dad, I always told you I’d come back and get my degree,” Gates, 51, told the crowd, which included his father, also named Bill. “I’ll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume,” said Gates in a reference to his plan to shift full-time into philanthropy.

At Harvard, Gates lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft’s chief executive, who stayed on to graduate and joined Microsoft in 1980. Gates dropped out to focus on Microsoft, which he founded in 1975.
