With a bold move to animate one of the greatest stories from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Saied Ghahari has always been an admirer of Persian culture. Growing up in Tehran next to an artistic father, he was surrounded by sculptures and paintings. His mother used to read him stories from the Shahnameh. With The Rebirth of Rostam almost finished, Saied has an accomplishment to be proud of. We took this opportunity to go behind the scenes.

What made you decide to do an animation on the great Iranian epic of Shahnameh, in particular the legendary story of Rostam & Sohrab?

Saied Ghahari: I am always entranced by stories and metaphors in our literature. Shahnameh specially is full of fairy tales, epics and references to history. It takes the reader into a beautiful world of a mixture of reality and some form of a fantasy. After all, what is reality?

At the same time that Shahnameh is a mythological and philosophical collection of stories, it creates a fairytale in which everything is possible. And that makes its stories popular to younger readers, where philosophies such as those from Molana and Attar may appeal mostly to more mature ones.

Rostam specially has such a great value and emphasis in our culture. When I was younger and watching films of Superman or Hercules, I was thinking of our own Rostam. He is such a great hero and role model.

What is the wider purpose of your project

SG: Our culture is one of the purest on the earth. It is ours now to learn, flourish and expand and use in our daily lives as a way of life.

As well as letting the whole world to know more of our culture, new Persian generations born in other countries than Iran do not have much exposure. Now which forms of media do they respond most too? There are some others who also noticed the power of these medias to promote our culture, for example the people behind “Babak & Friends” and “Hyperwerks” who are making comic books based on the Shahnameh. I recently found out about a group who are making a computer game too, quest of Persia. I am so glad of these new waves, and surely hope to see much more.

What were your greatest challenges and limitations?

SG: We had all sorts of challenges you can imagine: finding the right people and resources as well as financing the film. We had heavy technical limitations such as how to create armies of over 25,000 computer created soldiers marching in a scene longer than 45 seconds. Also, making the computer created characters act in a way to create some feelings in the audience; we had to simulate having some characters and souls. Then it was the motions and fighting scenes, specially those involving horses. We have used motion capture to create the most naturals movements, then we adjusted some of the moves to make it a little in a fantasy style.

What sort of research did you do about the background of the story, the depiction of the scenery(Persepolis), the character costumes, and the props used in the film?

SG: Lots of reading, which was a great part of making this film. I thought mixing our history with our culture makes great sense. so as to recreate the Persepolis as the center of Persia, as well as recreate the Argeh-Bam as Dejhe Sepid (White fortress). As for the costumes, we had to compromise for technical reasons. It was very difficult to simulate the cloth in a mass scale for the armies, so we designed metal. However, we kept the design of Persepolis guards to be close to what it really use to be.

How long did this take you to complete the film and how much did it cost?

SG: It took us almost 3 and a half years. Over 140 people in different stages worked on this film. The cost, well, it may well be one of the most expensive films ever made in the Persian language.

Who did the animation? Tell us about the technology you used and why? Why not 2D or another medium?

SG: I searched around Eastern Europe and the Far East to find a studio with great expertise and reasonable cost. I went to India and the Philippines and visited many computer animation studios. Paprikaas studios in Bangalore, India seemed to me as the best amongst them. They were incidentally also the most expensive, but I am glad I took my project there. I am sure once you see the film you agree with me that I think they did a great job.

Why 3D? You can achieve an amazing level of realism with 3D that you can not get with 2D and at the same time, it is still fantasy, Things like camera maneuverability, set and character designs, lighting, almost everything in 3D is so closer to reality.

You wrote the story in Persian. Tell us why Persian and not another language?

SG: Very simple. The film is first and foremost for Persians. Everywhere they are, they speak the language of that country and they all speak or at least understand some level of Persian too. It has subtitles in English for those who might not be as fluent in Persian. After distribution to Persians, we might dub it in other languages.

How do you plan to distribute the film?

SG: At the moment, we are planning to distribute the film via dreamor, on line sales is looking to be our best option to reach worldwide audiences.

Is there going to be more projects like this to tell the other stories of the Shahnameh?

SG: I surely hope so. Shahnameh, like so many other great books in our culture, is full of amazing metaphors and adventures. They must be retold; remembered ad re-lived with us every day. The amazing things about these metaphors is that every now and then, they sparkle a series of thoughts in you... they can give you a sense of well-being. And maybe more so, they may suddenly open up a new window to see the world from and while you are looking to the vast beauty through that window, you may find yourself feeling contempt. Some sense of knowing, without knowing; like a blind person who suddenly feels like he knows what is the color red. Have you ever had that feeling?

Desert Island Three things. What will you take?

SG: Some confidence, bit of curiosity and a sense of adventure.
