If you think you can't afford to travel, think again. There are easy ways to get where you want to go.
Steps
Search the airlines and special offers to get the best value for your money.
You can get a "One Way Ticket", which lets you go around the world with three stops in each continent for $2000 - $3000 dollars.
- a number of new low-cost comparison sites give a good overview of cheap flights in europe : www.momondo.com, www.skyscanner.net, www.dohop.com. In US try www.kayak.com, www.mobissimo.com or sidestep.com
Do a websearch and get lists of all the Youth Hostels and Backpacker Hostels in all the places you have selected to visit. Think of your accomodations as just a place to sleep.
Find out if you can stay with friends, but make sure you follow the rule, "Fish and Guests stink after 3 days". You don't want to overstay your welcome and lose a friendship.
Spend your days cheaply. Walk around a lot, and visit free or cheap attractions. Use shuttle buses or other cheap public transport. You can learn a lot about a place without spending a lot of money. Talk to people who seem friendly and ask for suggestions.
Avoid eating out -- bring noodles and soup packets. This way, you can travel for 6 weeks with less than $1,000 cash. Since you are there for the adventure, not the shopping, you won't need to buy souvenirs, either.
Tips
Joining a first class Airline Club may be a good idea, as you will get great first class facilities, internet access, and other amenities -- this is great if you are a frequent traveller.
Take cash rather than Travellers cheques unless you're going to Europe.
Australian money is taken many places, and so is American cash. Carry your money and passports in a body wallet, and never let it out of your sight.
Never take good jewelry with you if you are travelling like this. The only expensive thing you need is a camera, which should be strapped to your body.
Take a sarong to use as a sheet, towel, wrap, nightwear, day wear, etc.
Take chux to use as towel as it does the job, and is not damp to transport.
If you're going to be staying in one place for more than a few days, buy groceries. Even if where you're staying doesn't have a refrigerator, you can buy some fruit, vegetables, and bread at a local market. This will cost you much less than restaurant food. When you're hungry, eat a piece of fruit and some bread. If you still feel you need a "real" meal, you won't have to buy as much.
Warnings
Watch out for the security at the airports. It's far better to leave all gold and metal at home so you don't get continually security checked. It gets embarassing.
