A lot of girls (and even some guys) want to be a model because it's glamorous and all that jazz. Here are some cold, hard truths about becoming a model, as well as some realistic advice to make it happen.

Steps

Realize that there are qualities a model needs to have, for example clear skin, a well-proportioned face, full lips, big (or at least striking) eyes, high cheekbones and a nose that is not too large.

Decide what kind of model you'd like to be. A model can have many different figures - because there are many different types of models:

You can be quite thin and toned yet still quite curvy to be an average model, or big and curvy to be a plus size model.

If you're tall and very skinny but with a small breast size, you can be a catwalk model.

If you have large breasts but not very wide hips, you can be an underwear model.

If you have large breasts and bottom with slightly wide hips, you can be a booty girl.

If you don't fit any of the face or body descriptions, perhaps you can be a foot, hair or hand model.

Hair models often have to have good faces too.

If you don't have any of these qualities, you're still probably very beautiful but probably can't make it as a model.

Now that you know you want to become a model, enter modeling competitions which can often be found in magazines.

Look up the number of a reputable modeling agency and book an appointment or enter a beauty pageant.

Look up modeling on the internet to find more information. A great site is *www.lifeofamodel.com which is a candid insight into modeling - written by models.

When you attend your appointment, they might ask you to pull certain faces like laughing, happy, sad, or seductive. Practice in front of a mirror beforehand.

They will ask you to walk and take your measurements, so be prepared for all of that.

Tips

Don't put makeup on yourself - people will do that for you. In fact, it's best to show up fresh from the shower, ready to be all dolled up.

Be aware of the fact that if you become one of the top models like Kate

Moss, the people you work for might ask you to take drastic measures to stay a top model. For example, they might ask you to get nose jobs, liposuction, or have breast implants.

Other models can be mean, but you're still going to have to smile and hug them for the photos.

Always be polite and turn up on time to a shoot.

Get your parents' permission if you're less than 21.

Make sure you drink plenty of water and get enough sleep...it'll help you to look your best.

Warnings

Modeling is a tough business.

If they say they want to hire you but ask for a joining fee, portfolio or money for a modeling course, be wary - they might just be out to get your money.

Never take your clothes off for a shoot unless you know it's legitimate; you're a model, not a porn star.

Try not to mention your modeling career too much to your friends; girls can get catty about modeling.

Be wary of sleazes.

Don't become anorexic - it's not worth it.

If you are invited to a foreign country (i.e. Hong Kong, Macao etc.) for an audition or job, have enough funds to purchase a return ticket yourself. While legitimate jobs exist, there are many scams that provide one way tickets then trap young girls into prostitution rings when they cannot afford to go back home.

Watch out for scams! Places like Barbizon and John Robert Powers are schools, not agencies. School is not a requirement. It is actually a waste of money. You shouldn't have to pay until you get paid first.

Things You'll Need

At least one good head shot and one full body shot to send into agencies.
Confidence and a nice smile.

You don't need to be statuesque to become a model. Women who are 5'5" and under can be signed with an agency as long they look in the right places!

Steps

Take a few photographs of yourself to see how well you respond to the lens.

Your face and your ability to work with it in front of the camera are two key characteristics an agency will look at first. If you are not good at applying make-up, consider getting the photos professionally done. Professional photography, even if it is expensive, will give you a better idea of what kind of look you project. You will eventually need these photographs to snag an interview, so think of it as a worthwhile investment!

Do some research on modeling agencies. Check out their websites and their signed girls to see how well you fit in. Concentrate on girls with your height, and compare your measurements and looks with them to see how you stack up. There are agencies that represent girls who are 5'5" and under! But be realistic: these agencies will most likely not be well-known.

Work on your body and your attitude. Because models are generally 5'8" or taller, shorter girls will have to make up for this deficit by overcompensating with other attributes. Don't give an agency an excuse to let you go! Tone up, slim down, and work on your confidence!

Contact the agencies you are interested in via phone or email, and ask them how you can send in an application to be represented. They will most likely ask for your stats and a few pictures. This is where the professional photos from Step 1 come in most handy!

Get that interview! If an agency does not respond, call them back a week later and ask what the status of your application is. The last thing you want to do is give up.

Prior to an interview, practice different looks in front of a mirror or camera.

You may have to take impromptu photos for the interviewer to see how capable you are at working with your face. Concentrate on your eyes, and learn how to project different emotions without moving the rest of your face.

At the interview: be friendly, confident, and honest. If you have no past experience, tell them upfront. If you have other engagements, such as a job or school, tell the interviewer that as well. Just because you are 5'5" does not mean you cannot model! If the agency is able to see that you are dedicated, they will sign you!

Tips

Do a background check on any agency you are considering with the Better Business Bureau.

Consider going to other countries to pursue a modeling career. Models in Asia are usually under 5'6", and it may be easier for you to find work there. Non-

Asian women are particularly popular choices for modeling work since their look is unique.

Look outside of New York, Los Angeles, or any other major city where supermodels are most apt to be signed. Instead, look at agencies in smaller cities. It is better to start small and work your way up.

Consider going into Catalogue Work, as this is an area with a lot of work, and which uses all body shapes. Catwalk models have strict height and weight guidelines, so that they actually fit into the clothes that are made!

Warnings

Do not put your profile up on any website that boasts itself as being a hub for up and coming models to be discovered. There is a small chance that a reputable agency will discover you there, and you can instead be contacted by a fake agency that just wants to take your money.

You should not make a portfolio unless you are asked to. Most agencies will want to work with you in making a portfolio, so you do not need to buy those 8 X 10's yet!

Know your limits and your strengths. If you work where your strengths play out then you can be more successful.

Theres a lot of people out to exploit a pretty face. Dont let the idea of fame & fortune lure you when its not backed up by something solid. Read some of the horror stories online to know what to avoid. Talk to real models and ask them what they would recommend, where they learned their biggest lessons, what their bests and worst times were. Get informed.
