PM: How did you get started with music professionally from there?

Andy: I was a very active teenager and did well in school. I went to play soccer professionally in Scotland with the Ararat Soccer team's 4th division when I was 16. I also performed for the Shah and all his dignitaries at one point. I didn't really care or know who he was. I met the Queen and Malek Hossein in Kish and was portrayed as the youth of Iran. I then came to the US finally in 1978 around Thanksgiving time. I went to Cal State in Los Angeles to study music. Then I was offered a tour with an American band, doing a tribute to Bette Midler. Eventually I started to play with Persian Singers. That is when Kourosh and I recorded our first song and that became a big hit. I think we did 26 Jewish weddings in one month - it must have been June.



PM: What are you working on right now?

Andy: I have a new album in the works - we will probably release it some time in September. It will feature duets with Arab and Armenian artists which will focus on a more international audience. I have also been doing lots of work for different films, including the House of Sand and Fog, Restless, Hollywood Cup, Real World, Road Rules, and so on. I just also finished up a great project called The Keeper - the film about Omar Khayyam.



PM: Tell us about "The Keeper".

Andy: My partner Shani did some music for the film, so we collaborated on that part. We have also put together some great music videos which you can find on her website.

In the film, I play the Governor of Naishapour. He is Hassan's dad and has a pivotal role in the film, in that he raises Khayyam and is really the father figure. He teaches him about life and how to fight for what you believe in.



PM: Sounds like a tough role. How did you like acting and how do you keep the smile going as the Governor of Naishapur?

Andy: I have to say, it took a lot out of me. Acting is a lot more difficult than one imagines. I have a hard time getting angry or sad. You know, I am a happy guy. I like to laugh, so it was tough being a strict and controlling presence in the film. I did enjoy it very much though and am very proud of the film. I am a happy guy.



PM: I heard you love dogs and own a couple. What are their names?

Andy: I love having lots going on. I have two Maltese dogs, named Lilly and Sophie. I also have a German Shepard named Isabella. I have to go home to feed them now. (big smile)

I want to talk about my earlier statement! You should all buy andys new album because he is great and we support him. His album is very good and is probably better than anyone elses. I just feel he always sets standards that others can not even dream of. Pichak is a wonderful song!

I posted a statement saying do not buy the album. I want to take that back. Iam a very very huge Andy fan I consider myself the biggest! I have listened to some of the songs and they are pretty good. I just feel that he sets new standards and the highest standards for himself. I feel he is the best musician out there. The album sounds pretty good I just wish there were more songs!
Buy the Album because we want to support the man and the persian culture and music industry!
I just hope everyone buys the Album and does not get it free from the internet as we want to give these artists moeny so they can make new and better Albums!

نمی دونم تا چه حد با مجله طپش آشنایی دارید .داشتم شماره سپتامبر 2005 ش رو می خوندم که یه مطلب جالب توش نوشته بود : (اندی پرزیدنت ارمنستان). نوشته بود :"ابن روز ها اندی هنوز در بورس است و پر طرفدار و همه جا صحبت از اوست ...آلبوم جدیدش هم پر انرژی تر از همیشه به بازار عرضه خواهد شد و تولیدی است از سی ام جی و طپش رکوردز . از طرف دیگر فیلم زندگی حکیم عمر خیام ( کیپر) برایش پر سرو صدا بود و نشان داد که میتواند هنر پیشه توانایی نیز باشد و درهای تازه ای را برای او و شرکتش در فیلم های هالیوودی باز کرد. اندی به تازگی کنسرتی در ارمنستان برگزار نمود که استادیوم فوتبال مملو از جمعیت بود و دهها هزار نفر برای دیدنش به استادیوم رفتند و نشان دادند که اندی را دوست دارند . یکی از مسئولین گفت که اندی میتواند برای پرزنت شدن در ارمنستان کاندید شود وشک نکنید که به خاطر محبوبیتش میتواند تا پای پرزنتی هم برود و ادامه داد زمانی که اندی را از محلی به محل دیگر میبرند ترافیک خیابان های شهر به هم میریزد و ماموران مجبور میشوند مردم را متفرق کنند ." ناگفته نماند که در طی چند سال گذشته اندی در مراسم جوایز هنرمندان ارمنستان همه ساله جایزه بهترین خواننده پاپ رااز آن خود کرده و او رکورد دار این جایزه است و هیچ خواننده ای به اندازه او تا کنون این جایزه را برای چند سال متوالی نبرده است.

نوروز امسال برای تو يک نوروز و آغاز واقعيه چون آلبوم جديد City of angels (شهر فرشتگان) بيرون آمده که دو سی دی هم هست

درسته البته دقيقا دو سال از آلبوم قبلی من ميگذره
چرا City of angels ؟

اولاً به لس آنجلس شهر فرشته ها هم ميگن. برای من جايی پر از هنرمندان ايرانيه. در شرايطی که اونا نمی تونن در مملکت خودمون فعاليت کنن، در تبعيد دارن موسيقی يک مملکت رو زنده نگه ميدارن. اينا آدمايی هستن که در اين راه زندگيشون رو گذشتن چون درآمد زيادی هم در اين کار نيست که بخاطرش فعاليت کنن. صرفا بخاطر اينکه هنرمند هستن و هنر رو دوست دارن کار می کنن

من عاشق هنرمندها هستم. اگر خودم هم خواننده نبودم هر وقت خواننده ای رو می ديدم خوشحال می شدم. اينا برای من فرشته هستن و من صحبت فرشتگان دينی و مذهبی که خدا داره نميکنم ، چون اونا خيلی بالاتر از اين حرفها هستن. من در دنيايی که برای خودم درست کردم هنرمندها فرشته اند. و به هرحال لس آنجلس برای من جايی است که خانواده ام و دوستان من اونجا زندگی ميکنن و در نهايت بهشت من اونجاست

از آلبوم خودت کدوم آهنگ رو بیشتر از همه دوست داری؟

من آهنگ "مهم نبود" رو دوست دارم، چون پاکسيما که شعر اين آهنگ رو در يک بعدازظهر برای من نوشت تجربه خيلی شيرينی بود. سازنده اين آهنک حميد نديری از آهنگسازان ساکن ونکوور کاناداست که آهنگ "سبد سبد" در آلبوم قبلی هم کار ايشون بود

در اين يکساعت روی صحنه که داشتم تو رو تماشا می کردم، متوجه شدم يکی از دلايلی که مردم برای ديدن کنسرت تو اينطور شور و شوق نشون ميدن، شيطنت عجيب تو روی صحنه است. اين حس شيطنت رو از کجا مياری؟

من روی صحنه خوشحال ترين مرد زمين هستم. مثل اينکه يک بچه رو ببری توی کارخانه اسباب بازی. روزهايی که روی صحنه ميرم قشنگترين روزهای زندگی منه چون مردم منو تشويق ميکنن، آهنگهايی که اينهمه براشون زحمت کشيدی و توی استوديو وقت گذاشتی از زبان مردم می شنوی. به نوعی جواب زحمتهای ماست و خستگی رو هم از تن ما بيرون ميبره

از آهنگای جديدت، "پيچک" خيلی طرفدار داره و مرتب از من ميخوان که پخشش کنم. من خودم ريميکس"مرد تنها" رو دوست دارم ولی خب اون آهنگ بيشتر طرفدار داره، نظر خودت چيه؟

"پيچک" هم داستان جالبی داره، شعر اين آهنگ از خانم هما ميرافشار هست که بر اساس زندگی عشقی که داشتم برای من نوشت، محمد مقدم هم آهنگش رو ساخت ولی چندين سال طول کشيد که بتونم توی آلبومم بذارم. امسال هم خوشحالم که توی آلبومم هست چون الان زمانش بود. اين آهنگ انقدر به دل من نزديک بود که هرجور تنظيم می کردم حس می کردم هنوز آماده نيست
ايام نوروزه و تو هم که هميشه نوروز رو در هواپيما ميگذرونی و فکر کنم غذای هواپيما هم سفره هفت سينت باشه

من هم نوروز رو در هواپيما هستم و هم روز تولدم. مردم برای تولدشون جشن و مهمونی بزرگ ميگيرن، ما يکدفعه می بينيم روز تولدمون توی هواپيما داريم ميريم تاجيکستان! دفعه آخر که می رفتم تاجيکستان روز تولدم رو توی هواپيما بودم اما بعد مردم چه تولدی برای من گرفتن و چقدر ازشون ممنونم. من تولدم دوم ارديبهشته

در چند آلبوم قبلی ات با ريميکس کردن آهنگات سليقه کس ديگه رو توی آلبومت جا دادی، که ظاهراً تجربه خوبی بوده. ضمناً در مورد آهنگ "مرد تنها" هم توضيحی بده (اصولاً خبرنگار بی تجربه دو تا سوال رو با هم می پرسن!!)

(سوال پرسيدن تو رو من ديگه واردم، چون هر دو به هم ربط داشت!!) داستان ريميکس اينه که يه نسل تازه آمده در تمام دنيا که اين سبک "تکنو" (ريتميک) رو دست داره. و اين سبک تخصص من نيست. تخصص من در راک و سازها و اجراهای زنده است در نتيجه من کارم رو انجام ميدم بعد اين صداها رو به کسی ميدم که اين سبک رو از من بهتر می فهمه. هر دو سبک هم به نظر من برای آلبوم لازمه. پس به همين علت با "دی جی عليگيتور" و "نامی" و "دی جی کم" کار کردم و خيلی هم راضی هستم از نتيجه کار

آهنگ "مرد تنها" يه احساس عجيبی توش هست. از بچه های آمريکايی که اصلا از آهنگ ايرونی چيزی نميدونن تا راک زن ها و متاليست های آمريکا و حتی نوازندگان خود آهنگ که امريکايی هستن، به نحوی جذب اين آهنگ ميشن و من و پاکسيما روزی ده بار اين آهنگ رو گوش می کرديم. شعرش چيز عجيبيه و آهنگش هم انگار از يک سياره ديگه آمده، بعد جالب اينکه گوش که ميدی احساس ايرانی می کنی و تو رو به ايران می بره و روزهای بهروز وثوقی و رضا موتوری و فرهاد و

آلبوم جديدت دو سی دی داره. ده آهنگ جديد و شش آهنگ ريميکس شده. اين همه آهنگ توی يک آلبوم که صرف نمی کنه چرا اين کار رو ميکنی؟

والا بقيه خواننده ها حق دارن که آهنگ کم ميذارن چون خرج توليد يک آهنگ خيلی زياده ، مردم هم که آلبومها رو کپی ميکنن و درآمد اين کمپانی ها به يغما ميره!. اما من مقداری از آهنگها رو خودم می سازم، و آهنگسازها هم با من کنار ميان. از طرفی دوست دارم آلبوم من رنگی باشه و پر باشه
آلبوم "شهر فرشتگان" به نوعی به سمت موسيقی الکترونيک رفته، و ساز در اون کمتر هست. اما خب از آخرين باری که در استوديو پيدات کردم خاطرم هست که خيلی سازها رو روی آهنگها خودت ميزنی، توی اين آلبوم چطور؟

داستان اينه که موزيک مدرن نميتونه الکترونيک توش نباشه، ولی من علاقه شديدی به سازهای زنده دارم. در نتيجه تمام آهنگهای من روی کامپيوتره و با کامپيوتر هم ساخته ميشه، ولی روش سازهای زنده هم می زنيم.خودم بيس گيتار و آکورد و تمام ريتمهای گيتار که با صدای "واو واو" هست رو خودم ميزنم
امشب هم آهنگی رو به آغاسی تقديم کردی، چطور به اين فکر افتادی؟

من حقيقتاً چندين ساله که دنبال موقعيت می گشتم با آغاسی آهنگ دو صدايی بخونم که متاسفانه اون در ايران بود و دسترسی بهش نداشتم. در تمام مدت ساخت اين آلبوم هم تو فکر بودم که آهنگ گل بندر رو با آغاسی بخونم. حتی ميخواستم ترک ها (صدا های خام) رو به ايران بفرستم و اون روش بخونه و برام بفرسته که متاسفانه سلامتيش اجازه نداد و از دنيا رفت. آغاسی هم از فرشته هايی بود که من هميشه عاشقش بودم و عاشق کارش بودم و برای من آغاسی نمرده و هست. و چون رفتنش رو نديدم هنوز برای من آغاسی زنده است.آغاسی اولين کسی بود که روی صحنه حرکت می کرد و انرژی نشون می داد حتی تا آخرين روزهای عمرش. من يادمه دو سال پيش در دوبی کنسرت داشتم و آغاسی رو دعوت کردم روی صحنه اومد و با هم آهنگ "آمنه" و "لب کارون" رو خونديم. تمام وقت روی صحنه با اون حال مريضش می رقصيد. آدمی که يک عمر درد داشته روی صحنه فراموش کرد که درد داره

ميدونی که شايعه بود که تو پسر آغاسی هستی چون که "آمنه" رو هم تو خوندی

همين شايعه اش هم برای من افتخار بوده و هست

آهنگ يالا هم که با "دی جی عليگيتور" اجرا کردم از اونجا شروع شد که در سوئد عليگيتور پشت صحنه پيش من اومد و با هم آشنا شديم
عليگيتور از طرفداران تو ست چون خودش به من گفته

چون اون نسل با آهنگهای من بزرگ شدن و برای من مايه افتخاره که اينقدر خارج از ايران موفق هستن. عليگيتور و آرش و همه اين بچه ها مايه افتخار همه ايرانيها هستن و من کاراشون رو دوست دارم. عليگيتور به من پيشنهاد داد که يکی از آهنگام رو ريميکس کنه، من هم براش فرستادم و واقعاً که شاهکار کرد

Bringing matinee idol charisma to the silver screen is ANDY, Persia’s legendary music exile aka “The Prince of Persia” or “The Persian Elvis” in media circles, who has released multiple albums selling in the millions throughout the world. His touring schedule regularly includes locales rarely if ever performed in by American--based artists such as Armenia, Uzbekistan, and cities Tashkent, Samarghand, and in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates, amongst others, spreading his universal message of love and joy. In the United States, he has played for the last five years to critical acclaim at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. In a gala ceremony at Universal Studios, he was named Persian Pop Male Singer of the Decade. For five years in a row he has received the coveted Best Armenian International Singer, Best Armenian World Artist and Best Armenian World Album awards. He was also recognized and awarded twice by the City Council of Los Angeles for his contributions through music to the city.

At first glance, it’s the dance music side of Andy that stands out. Somewhere between the mystery of an ancient civilization and music that dates back 5000 years and the youthful brashness of modern music, Andy has made his own unique place in music history. He has created a new fusion of sounds that combine traditional Middle Eastern instruments with the Western world’s drum and bass, guitar and modern technology. His global sound embraces many exotic influences. Aside from his Persian- Armenian heritage, Andy combines lush Arabic modes with African rhythms, which he spices with Spanish flamenco guitar licks, and western dance music. Besides Farsi and Armenian, his two native languages, Andy sings in English and Spanish. Ironically, even though Andy ’s music is banned in his home country of Iran, his albums sell into the millions, though all are underground and bootlegged.

From his early childhood in Teheran, his life has been a study in contrasts. His father built roads, yet the family had no car. They were beyond poor - nine people living in a small one-room house but his mother’s careful management kept food on the table and enabled his parents to put six children through school. Their house was filled with love, laughter, and most importantly for Andy, music.

As Andy was beginning to explore his musical roots, his native land began to broil with turbulence. The Islamic Revolution under the new religious leadership brought civil war and Andy made the decision to leave Iran. The revolution has made it totally impossible for Andy to perform in his native country because of the governmental ban on pop music. Anyone caught listening to his music there can be fined and jailed.

Besides the profound respect Andy has for Persian and Armenian poetry and traditional music, he developed an abiding love for contemporary Western music. His musical icons include the Beatles, Deep Purple, Ray Charles and the masters of jazz, but mostly it is his love and respect for Santana’s chugging Afro-Latin rhythms that influenced him the most. And like Santana, Andy invited some of the world’s most famous musical artists to collaborate on his latest album.

Today, Andy is the living proof of the American dream.. He credits Los Angeles, a city of contrasts that helped him forge his unique sound, and the musical mosaic that resulted has catapulted him to superstardom.
Audiences can’t get enough of this exciting combination: the poetic beauty of Persian and Armenian music set against the vibrant backdrop of dance music. The most well-known star of today and the kindest, Andy, offers up exclusive answers to where he comes from, how he got here, and how he manages to always have a bright smile on his face.

Born in Tehran, Andy Madadian grew up in a humble area called Majidiyeh, a neighborhood that left much to be desired yet taught him great lessons from the beginning. With four brothers and two sisters, their house was always packed and there was always something going on.

One thing is for certain. From day one, Andy has been an entertainer at heart. From the Governor of Naishapur, to Pop Heartthrob, he has come a long way to claim the number one spot in the hearts of Iranians around the world. An actor, singer, musician, artist, producer, and all around entertainer, Andy sits down with us for a chat.



PersianMirror: Tell us about your childhood.

Andy: I was a very happy child and a top student. My father used to build roads and for his job, we would always be moving around to different villages every so often. I spent one summer in Kermanshah and through all the moves developed a real love for the essence of people. Even though my family is Armenian, I never went to church. I believe in all religions. When I was 9, I put my first play together. We sold the tickets to the neighborhood kids, while delivering a mini-trailer of the story on the spot. There were sword fights and curtain calls. We were very professional and had a lot of fun.

In high school, we put together band and I started to learn to play the guitar. I hated Iranian music and was really into English tunes, like Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, and anything rock that represented rebellion and change.

PM: How did you get started with music professionally from there?

Andy: I was a very active teenager and did well in school. I went to play soccer professionally in Scotland with the Ararat Soccer team's 4th division when I was 16. I also performed for the Shah and all his dignitaries at one point. I didn't really care or know who he was. I met the Queen and Malek Hossein in Kish and was portrayed as the youth of Iran. I then came to the US finally in 1978 around Thanksgiving time. I went to Cal State in Los Angeles to study music. Then I was offered a tour with an American band, doing a tribute to Bette Midler. Eventually I started to play with Persian Singers. That is when Kourosh and I recorded our first song and that became a big hit. I think we did 26 Jewish weddings in one month - it must have been June.




PM: What are you working on right now?

Andy: I have a new album in the works - we will probably release it some time in September. It will feature duets with Arab and Armenian artists which will focus on a more international audience. I have also been doing lots of work for different films, including the House of Sand and Fog, Restless, Hollywood Cup, Real World, Road Rules, and so on. I just also finished up a great project called The Keeper - the film about Omar Khayyam.




PM: Tell us about "The Keeper".

Andy: My partner Shani did some music for the film, so we collaborated on that part. We have also put together some great music videos which you can find on her website.

In the film, I play the Governor of Naishapour. He is Hassan's dad and has a pivotal role in the film, in that he raises Khayyam and is really the father figure. He teaches him about life and how to fight for what you believe in.



PM: Sounds like a tough role. How did you like acting and how do you keep the smile going as the Governor of Naishapur?

Andy: I have to say, it took a lot out of me. Acting is a lot more difficult than one imagines. I have a hard time getting angry or sad. You know, I am a happy guy. I like to laugh, so it was tough being a strict and controlling presence in the film. I did enjoy it very much though and am very proud of the film. I am a happy guy.



PM: I heard you love dogs and own a couple. What are their names?

Andy: I love having lots going on. I have two Maltese dogs, named Lilly and Sophie. I also have a German Shepard named Isabella. I have to go home to feed them now. (big smile)
