The mobile-phone firm Nokia is warning customers that up to 46m batteries used in some of its handsets could be faulty.
The Finnish company says it has received around 100 complaints about the batteries overheating.
The batteries in question were manufactured by the Japanese firm Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006.
Nokia is promising to replace all the potentially faulty batteries.
Customers can check the company's website to see if their phone may be affected.
The replacement of the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries would be the biggest voluntary consumer-electronics recall, after Sony Corp. replaced 9.6m notebook-computer batteries from August 2006.
