A girl is missing from KS

Kelsey Ann Smith, age 18, has been missing since the evening of Saturday, June 2, 2007.

According to the Kansas City Star, the recent graduate from Shawnee Mission West High School was last seen leaving a Target department store south of Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Kansas. Kelsey was supposed to be on her way home.

She never made it. Kelsey’s car, an ‘87 Buick Regal, was found in the parking lot outside the Macy’s at the mall, 2 hours after Kelsey left the Target. Kelsey, 5′6″ with long brown hair and brown eyes, was last seen wearing a pink top, black shorts, and sandals.

Kelsey phoned her mother at a quarter past 7 p.m. Saturday night to let her know she was on her way. Kelsey was to attend a graduation party that night. Kelsey was known to be a responsible young woman and it was this combined with the fact that there was a party she planned to attend that raised the alarm early.

SHE IS DEAD.

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (AP) -- Police on Wednesday found a body they believe is that of a teenager who disappeared four days ago after she was apparently abducted from a department store parking lot.

Police Chief John Douglass said the body was found across the state line at a Grandview, Missouri, lake. Positive identification was pending, but authorities believed it was 18-year-old Kelsey Smith.

He did not say how she was slain.

Officers had been searching woods at the lake since Tuesday after investigators traced two signals from Smith's cell phone to an area about 15 miles east of the Target store in suburban Kansas City.

Before a church memorial service Wednesday evening, Smith's father thanked everyone involved in the search.

"She could walk into a room full of strangers and walk out with a room full of friends," Greg Smith said, fighting tears.

"Her excitement and passion for life was unmatched," he said. "She lived more in 18 years than many people do with a great deal more time."

Police had questioned "numerous people" but had not identified a suspect, Douglass said.

Kelsey murder suspect arrested.

A 26-year-old man seen on a video surveillance tape was charged Thursday with premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection to the death of recent high school graduate Kelsey Smith, who disappeared from a Target parking lot in Overland Park, Kan.

Police arrested Edwin Hall, 26, on Wednesday night after he appeared on a security camera video shortly before Smith, 18, walked out of Target and was forced into a car last Saturday.

Edwin Roy Hall, 26, of Olathe, Kansas, appeared via closed-circuit television from the New Century Adult Detention Facility in Gardner, Kansas.

He told the judge he was not sure if he would hire his own attorney or needed a public defender, CNN affiliate KMBC reported. He is due back in court in a week and is being held on $5 million bond.

Hall is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in the death of Kelsey Smith, 18.

Smith, a recent high school graduate, had been missing since Saturday evening, when she went shopping at a Target store for a gift for her boyfriend.

Hall, from Olathe, Kansas, would face 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the murder charge and at least 12 years on the aggravated kidnapping charge, District Attorney Phill Kline said at a news conference late Wednesday.
