Modern day 'Robin Hood' shot in India

LUCKNOW: Indian police killed one of the country's most notorious bandits yesterday ending a nearly three-decade career in crime that included murders, kidnappings and extortion.

Shiv Kumar, also known as Dadua, ruled the ravines and forests of the central states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh through a mixture of fear and love, with many hailing him as a modern day Robin Hood.

"After a fierce battle, in which (the bandits) also used sophisticated weapons, the police was able to kill Dadua," police said.

Four of his accomplices were also killed in the battle in the Chitrakoot region, 300km southwest of Lucknow.

Police said Kumar, thought to be in his 60s, was wanted for more than 200 cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion.

He had a reward on his head of Rs500,000 (BD4,649), a small fortune in this region.

Locals said he managed to evade police so long because he enjoyed the support of villagers and from powerful political patrons.
