ABC news has posted a story detailing the contents of a videotape that was smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates in which a member of the royal family tortures a man who allegedly shorted him in a grain deal. Of course, anger is a natural reaction in such a business situation. Most civilized people will resort to legal and contractual means by which to reclaim their lost money, time, etc.

Not so for Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan who happens to be the brother of that wealthy country’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed. I squirmed as I read the recounts of the torture he inflicted on the grain dealer. And I am not a squirmer. Take it from someone who watched the entire Faces of Death series without so much as a cringe. Issa’s reaction to a business deal gone bad borders on the insane.

      Detail are grueling.

And always, there is the Texas connection. Can anyone say George Bush, or Osama bin Laden? Turns out the tape was smuggled out of the UAE by Bassam Nabulsi, a former business associate of Sheikh Issa, and later a torture victim of the same man as well. Nabulsi told ABC the tapes were recorded by his brother who videotaped them on orders from the Sheikh who took special delight in watching the recordings in the comfort of his own royal pestilence.

The Sheikh begins by stuffing sand down the man’s mouth, as the police officers restrains the victim.

Then he fires bullets from an automatic rifle around him as the man howls incomprehensibly.

Over the course of the tape, Sheikh Issa acts in an increasingly sadistic manner.

He uses an electric cattle prod against the man’s testicles and inserts it in his anus.

At another point, as the man wails in pain, the Sheikh pours lighter fluid on the man’s testicles and sets them aflame.

Then the tape shows the Sheikh sorting through some wooden planks. “I remember there was one that had a nail in it,” he says on the tape.

The Sheikh then pulls down the pants of the victim and repeatedly strikes him with board and its protruding nail. At one point, he puts the nail next to the man’s buttocks and bangs it through the flesh.

“Where’s the salt,” asks the Sheikh as he pours a large container of salt on to the man’s bleeding wounds.

The final scene on the tape shows the Sheikh positioning his victim on the desert sand and then driving over him repeatedly. A sound of breaking bones can be heard on the tape.

Yes, Issa is officially mentally ill and criminally insane. Jeffrey Dahmer could have taken a lesson or two from this guy in pure viciousness.

      And in case you’re wondering:

The torture victim was identified by Nabulsi as an Afghan grain dealer, Mohammed Shah Poor, who the Sheikh accused of short changing on a grain delivery to his royal ranch on the outs***ts of Abu Dhabi.

      And there is always Texas.

Sheikh Issa’s lawyer, Daryl Bristow of Baker Botts in Houston, told ABC News “the tape is the tape.”

So this very wealthy and very sadistic monster is defended by a Houston lawyer. Hmmm. I wonder how many degrees of separation come between his sleazy hands and the Bush clan? [Stay tuned]

Nabulsi has filed a lawsuit claiming he was falsely arrested in Abu Dhabi for trafficking narcotics after he failed to turn over Issa’s torture entertainment. According to Nabulsi’s Houston lawyer, Tony Buzbee, during his time in prison the guards would stick their fingers up Nabulsi’s anus and repeatedly asked him to turn over the tapes.

Buzbee also says “They would keep him from sleeping, deny him his medications, tell him they were going to rape his wife, kill his child. They made him pose naked while they took pictures.”

The UAE, not to take such charges sitting down or without mounting even the faintest effort at repudiating such facts about one of its own glittering jewels, concluded that Nabulsi “was in no way mistreated during his incarceration for drug possession.”

Not that the UAE is in any danger of tainting its reputation in American eyes. UAE, like much of the US-friendly and oil-rich nations of the mid East are allowed to engage in horrific human rights abuses as long as they stay on our good side and provide a veritable fountain of fuel for the ages to come. The bin Laden’s are a mainstay Saudi family with Texas connections, and beyond that, Bush connections.

There will be no hell to pay for the UAE. They must be laughing at the fuss.

Nabulsi says officials at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi were aware of the torture tapes but took no action to protest the Sheikh’s action.

The UAE is considered a stalwart U.S. ally in the region, with close cooperation in working against al Qaeda. The U.S. Navy has an important base outside Dubai.

Nabulsi says he even showed portions of the tape to a Department of Homeland Security official stationed in Abu Dhabi to train UAE police, Bill Wallrap.

Nabulsi says after the U.S. official watched the tapes, he advised Nabulsi to “gather your family and get out of the country as soon as possible for your own safety.”

And remember Daryl Bristow, Issa’s lawyer mentioned previously in the story? He has asked that the case be transferred to courts in UAE, where undoubtedly Nabulsi will receive an immensely unfair trial despite one piece of irrefutable evidence…the videotape. His possession of that tape seems to present all the motive necessary to show that Issa would be driven to torture him (not that Issa needs much motive to torture for enjoyment, apparently).

According to Bristow, the ABC story is being fed “grossly misleading” facts and that the story is “in large measure, demonstrably untrue; and it is defamatory to Sheikh Issa.”

Bristow, the Texas lawyer, will have no problem seeing that his UAE clients come out smelling like a desert rose. He is an excellent lawyer, has proven it in the past.

In fact, he demonstrated his acumen when he represented George W. Bush in Florida’s Presidential election recount case in 2000. Yes, that’s right.

And one of the lawyer’s he works alongside, one of the firm’s partners, is Secretary of State James Baker, as crooked and tarnished a political figure as you’re likely to find.
