  • First Woman Joins Famous Beefeaters

"It is wonderful that she has managed to create a bit of history."

However, there are rumours that the remaining 35 male Beefeaters are not as quick to move with the times and welcome a woman into their ranks.

One said: "They take the view we should maintain tradition and not make history. She sounds a great girl but it is going to feel distinctly odd having a woman amongst us." Miss Cameron posted an update on the Friends Reunited website that she was "single, no kids and I have never felt the urge to wear comfortable shoes".

She also wrote that her long Army career, in which she was stationed in Norway, Cyprus, Germany and the UK, was a surprise to her mother.

She said her mother thought she would last 'just two weeks'.

A Tower of London spokesman said: "We can't confirm anything officially as she hasn't signed her contract yet. The official announcement will be next week."

Beefeaters - thought to be so called because they always got a daily ration of meat - must be former senior Non-Commissioned Officers from the Army, RAF or Royal Marines.

They need to have served Queen and country for at least 22 years and must hold long service and good conduct medals.

New Yeoman Warders swear an oath of allegiance on Tower Green after the Tower has closed to the public.

After the ceremony in September, Miss Cameron will join the other Yeoman Warders and her health will be toasted by the Chief Yeoman Warder from the ceremonial punch bowl.
