X Factor judges Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh had a bitter row after Walsh voted off Cowell's act.
Bodyguards reportedly had to pull the feuding judges apart seconds after the cameras stopped rolling on the live ITV1 show.
Cowell later stormed off the set without telling anyone, snubbing ITV2 spin-off The Xtra Factor.
Walsh was furious at personal jibes by Cowell earlier in the show.
The judges composed themselves for the results show, which saw Simon's act Ashley McKenzie dumped from the show.
The spat worsened when Walsh gave Cowell's act Ashley the boot and then Cowell locked himself in his dressing room.
Cowell said: "I called him spiteful because he used something personal against me to affect someone's career and I don't think that's acceptable.
"Louis' behaviour was a joke. His decision was purely spiteful and tactical. Now the viewers won't get to see Ashley at his best."
Walsh, 54, called Simon's non-appearance on The Xtra Factor "unprofessional and childish".
