Iran beats UAE 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

Iran beat the United Arab Emirates 1-0 on Wednesday with a second-half goal from captain Ali Karimi, keeping its hopes alive of a berth at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Playing before a home crowd of 40,000 fans, Iran was the better team for the first half of an open and entertaining game but struggled to find a way through a strong UAE defense.

The visitors created some chances after the break, but Iran continued to dominate. Karimi broke through the UAE defense in the 54th minute to score the only goal of the match from inside the box.

The top two teams from the five-team group qualify directly for South Africa 2010, while the third-placed team participates in a further playoff. Iran remains in fourth place with 10 points from seven games.

South Korea, which advanced to the 2010 World Cup on Saturday after beating UAE 2-0, leads Group B of Asian qualifying with 15 points from seven matches.

North Korea and Saudi Arabia are second and third with 11 points each. Iran must win its final game against South Korea in Seoul next week and hope that Saudi Arabia and North Korea draw to automatically qualify for the World Cup. Otherwise, it may secure a playoff spot.

UAE has already been eliminated with only one point from eight games.

Iran stayed in the race for Asia's remaining automatic place at the 2010 World Cup finals by beating United Arab Emirates 1-0 on Wednesday.

Ali Karimi netted a stunning goal eight minutes after the break to clinch the vital win and keep the regional heavyweights in contention for a place at their fourth finals.

The win took Iran's points total to 10 going into their final match, one adrift of North Korea and Saudi Arabia in the battle to qualify along with group winners South Korea.

Australia and Japan have already sealed the two slots from the other group.

Iran can only take the second qualifying slot in their group if they win away to South Korea on June 17 while Saudi Arabia and North Korea draw in their match.

A win for Iran would guarantee at least third place and a play-off berth regardless of the result in the other match.

The third-placed teams from the two Asian groups play off against one another, with the winner taking on Oceania champions New Zealand for a place in South Africa.

        ONE-WAY TRAFFIC

Iran should have won by a far greater margin against a winless team which was eliminated earlier in the campaign.

Vahid Hashemian could have fired Iran ahead in spectacular fashion three minutes into the match when he shot on the turn and forced a good save.

He almost scored again in the ninth minute and Hosein Kaebi came close later in a frustrating first half for the hosts.

Iran broke the deadlock early in the second half when former Asian Player of the Year Karimi skipped around the defence before striking the ball superbly into the bottom corner.

It might be a hard task to beat South Korea in Seoul, even if they turn up with a B-team and have nothing to play for, but at least we're not reliant on anyone else to make it to the World Cup. A win against South Korea and we have 3rd place for sure and then we can still make it on our own by beating the team that finishes 3rd in the other group and New Zealand.

Even a draw might be enough, although it wouldn't be in our hands anymore, since Saudi Arabia need a win to finish 2nd and I don't think that they will intentionally draw with North Korea in order to see them finish second, which they would because of a worse goal difference. So no matter what happens, success and failure are in our own hands.

However, the task will be hard enough. Our team will have the 2nd flight between Far East Asia and Iran in one week. That's roughly 6 hours flight and 5-6 hours time difference. We will also play before Saudi Arabia and North Korea play, which under different circumstances could have resulted in another Gijon game, where both teams could have played for a result to see both go through. That's still a possibility, but Saudi Arabia would be extremely stupid to do so.

Overall, the question arises why AFC and the federations could not arrange the schedules in a way, that all teams in the final round play at the same time and all teams have similar paths to travel. I actually talked about this with my friend Mr.Martin-Reza Babry today and the inability of Asian football is quite ridiculous, as it works everywhere else too. So how about making the schedule in a way that both Iran and Saudi Arabia play in the two parts of Korea or South Korea and North Korea play in Tehran and Riyadh respectively in the last round? That shouldn't have been too difficult.

It was unfair enough that South Korea were allowed to play the away game to North Korea in China and everyone else had to play in Pyongyang, which is to a degree understandable because of the political tension. But we should also not forget that 8 years ago Iraq had to play its home game against Saudi Arabia away from home, while we played in Baghdad.

At some point those involved in our football and representing Iran at AFC need to realize whether they are actually representing Iran and if they are representing Iran, they should realize what representing is all about. It cannot be that at every World Cup Qualification, we buckle up and give our opponents advantages. It's not that our team is so brilliant that we can afford this.

Iran remain in the hunt for a spot in South Africa as a wonder-strike by Ali Karimi saw them edge the UAE in Tehran.

Needing a win to keep alive any realistic hope of qualifying for their third World Cup in four attempts, the Iranians were continually frustrated by the UAE defence and goalkeeper Majed Naser.

But Karimi eased the concerns of the home fans at the Azadi Stadium with a classy winning goal in the 53rd minute.

It was only the second win in Group B for the Iranians, which elevated them to 10 points, one behind both North Korea and Saudi Arabia who meet next Wednesday in Riyadh.

Iran have their fate in their own hands and can ensure at least a play-off spot with victory in Seoul against already-qualified South Korea in their final Group B game.

An Iran win and a draw in Riyadh would even see them finish second, giving them an automatic berth in South Africa.

Entering the match with only one win in six group games, the Iranians immediately set to make things right, threatening in the opening minute when Vahid Hashemian chested down Karimi's cross in the box but fired his effort straight at goalkeeper Majed Naser.

In the 10th minute, Hashemian rose to meet Pejman Nouri's cross from the left but sent his header wide.

UAE rarely threatened in the opening half but on one of their rare attacks, Nawaf Mubarak nearly opened the scoring with a free-kick which was deflected wide.

Javad Nekounam saw his header stopped by Naser while Masoud Shojaei's shot deflected off a defender and flew over the crossbar.

Half-time substitute Mohammad Khalatbari almost broke the deadlock early in the second half when his header off a Nouri cross was superbly stopped by Naser.

In his desperation to retrieve the rebound, Khalatbari charged in on Naser with his studs up. He raked the goalkeeper and was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card.

The home side's frustrations were finally ended eight minutes after the interval after a fine individual effort by Karimi.

Receiving a pass from Andranik Teymourian in midfield, Karimi displayed great control and composure to take the ball into the box, holding off a couple of challenges before slotting the ball home.

UAE threatened on the hour when Abdulsalam Jumma's shot from 20 metres was easily stopped by goalkeeper Seyed Rahmati.

But it was the Iranians who had the better of the opportunities as the clock ticked down.

Arash Borhani failed to get enough purchase on an effort which was cleared off the line by Obaid Khaleifa, and with six minute remaining, Hossein Kaebi made a brilliant run in from the right flank before firing a low shot that rolled narrowly past the upright.

Midfield star Ali Karimi scored the only goal as Iran defeated the United Arab Emirates 1-0 on Wednesday to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Iran remain in fourth place in Asian qualifying Group B with 10 points from seven matches, one behind North Korea and Saudi Arabia.

South Korea, with 15 points, have already made sure of their place in the finals in South Africa next year.

The second automatic qualifying spot will be decided next Wednesday when Iran travel to South Korea while the Saudis welcome North Korea to Riyadh.

The team who finishes third will have to face the third-placed team in Group A, either Bahrain or Uzbekistan, with the eventual winner going on to face New Zealand for a spot in the 2010 finals.

In a tense, must-win game for Iran, the 100,000-seater Azadi Stadium was two-thirds empty with heavy rain making passing difficult.

Karimi struck the crucial goal on 52 minutes after drifting past two UAE defenders before unleashing a fierce drive.

Iran have now beaten UAE 10 times in 13 matches with three games drawn.

The Iranians are trying to reach a fourth World Cup having qualified for the 1978, 1998 and 2006 finals.

"I know many of their players. I have worked with them for many years. But they put on a good show against Saudi Arabia (in a 0-0 draw earlier Wednesday) despite already making it to the World Cup. "I am optimistic that we will reach the finals either directly or through play offs."
