Authorities on high alert for approaching cyclone

BBSNews 2007-06-05 - DUBAI, (IRIN) -- Oman's police and army are on high alert in anticipation of a powerful tropical cyclone that is expected to hit the Gulf country's shores late on Tuesday or on Wednesday. At least 7,000 people living in coastal areas have already been evacuated.

"There is no definite number of people who have left the areas expected to be hit by the cyclone as the people moved by themselves as a precautionary measure. Many are staying in friends' or relatives' houses - that's why we don't have an exact number," Colonel Abdallah al-Harathi, head of the Omani police's public relations department, told IRIN by phone.

"We hope they will be able to go back to their homes in 72 hours, after the cyclone passes. We are highly prepared and ready to provide them with means of transport, food, blankets and medical services in case they need them. Until now, there are no injuries and the situation is under control."

Cyclone Gonu originated in the Gulf Sea and is traveling in a westerly north-westerly direction at 7-10kmph with accompanying winds of up to 200kmph and waves of up to 8m high, according to meteorologists. It will be the first time most citizens of Oman will have experienced such strong winds.

"Imagine that you live directly on the Gulf, but in a place where it hardly ever rains, and where a hurricane has never hit, for at least a generation - for more than 60 years," Jeff Masters, a senior meteorologist at The Weather Underground, wrote.

"Your community and many like yours are situated not only directly on the water, but near or in large dry riverbeds on the coastal plain, which is a narrow strip of sandy shoreline that is the drop-off for the 3,000-foot mountain range behind it. This is the eastern coast of Oman, where communities line the shoreline which is shortly going to be experiencing a major hurricane. We can only hope that the danger is understood and that all of these communities have evacuated to higher ground and a safer location," Masters added.

Lieutenant-General Malik bin Suleiman al-Ma'amari, inspector-general of Oman's police and customs and head of the National Committee for Civil Defence, told reporters that the cyclone would approach Oman from the east and hit coastal areas from Ras Madrakah to Ras al-Hadd. It would then had north in the direction of the Sharqiyah region and part of al-Hajar al-Sharqi and al-Hajar al-Gharbi.

"We encourage people to move from the hazardous areas, particularly Masirah and al-Halaniyat islands, to more secure areas," al-Ma'amari said, adding that the police and civil defence have deployed specialist units and vehicles in the areas likely to be affected by the cyclone. He also said the police, in cooperation with government departments, will provide shelter and food for people affected by the cyclone.

United Nations agencies are also on standby to assist. "Oman is always highly prepared to face emergency situations. It will be clear what the requirements are once the cyclone calms down," Hassan Shawareb, of UNICEF Oman, said.

Meteorologists are still unsure of the exact impact Cyclone Gonu will have on Oman as its direction could become more northerly, in which case the Sultanate would not feel the full force of the storm. Either way, it is due to move on and hit Iran's coast after Oman and then is likely to hit Pakistan, where it could cause significant flooding of the coast near Karachi, the country's commercial capital and largest city.

      Oil markets watch Cyclone Gonu

Oil prices were relatively flat in Wednesday trading as eyes were focused on a powerful cyclone heading towards the Persian Gulf.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the price of light, sweet crude for July delivery was up four cents US at $65.65 US a barrel.

Cyclone Gonu is forecast to make land in southeastern Iran late Wednesday or early Thursday. Rough seas are forecast in the Straits of Hormuz, through which roughly 40 per cent of the world's oil is shipped.

"Uncertainty about the cyclone in the Middle East is holding the crude oil futures market steady, with prices fluctuating a little as traders watch storm developments," said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

Market watchers were also awaiting Wednesday's release of weekly U.S. government data on fuel supplies. According to a Dow Jones survey of energy analysts, gasoline supplies are projected to rise by 1.5 million barrels and crude oil stocks are seen as gaining 120,000 barrels.

Iran evacuates hundreds from southeastern port as cyclone Gonu approaches

TEHRAN, Iran (AP): Authorities evacuated hundreds of residents of the Iranian port of Chabahr on the Coast of Oman Sea on Wednesday out of fear of an approaching cyclone, a local official said.

Southern Iran and the oil-rich Persian Gulf were next in its path of cyclone Gonu, which was lashing Oman's eastern coast since late Tuesday, with thousands of people evacuated from Oman's low-lying areas in what was the strongest recorded storm to hit the Arabian peninsula.

Iranian state television said that floods, caused by the heavy rainfall, have already cut some major roads in southeastern Iran. Winds gusting up to 110 kilometer per hour (69 mph) have reached costal areas near the Jask town, 1,800 kilometers (1,125 miles) southeast of Tehran, the TV said.

"University and school students were moved to higher ground in the area to avoid the cyclone effects,'' Hojjat Ali Shayanfar, head of emergency services in Iran's Sistan Baluchistan province told The Associated Press.

Shayanfar gave no figures but said residents from low-laying parts of the town of Chabahr were evacuated. "We also turned off a local electric power plant as a preventive measure.''

Initial winds reaching the coastal town measured 50-60 kilometers per hour (30-37 mph).

Iran's meteorological department in a statement carried by state television warned people in other coastal areas and islands in the Oman Sea and Strait of Hormuz to keep their distance from the waters and avoid any sea transport. It also said that height of the waves would reach to 5.5 meters (18 feet), a rare record in the area.

"The storm began early morning Wednesday and will weaken gradually in the Lut desert in central Iran in the coming days,'' the state TV's weather forecast said.

Meanwhile the IRNA official news agency reported that four boats capsized during the storm but no casualties were reported.

The cyclone, Gonu, would be the strongest cyclone to hit the area since record keeping started in 1945. A cyclone is the term used for hurricanes in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific.

Cyclone Gonu kills 12 in Oman

At least 12 people have been killed in Oman by Cyclone Gonu before the ferocious storm moved towards Iran and caused three more deaths and widespread panic forcing thousands to flee homes.

"So far, 12 deaths have been confirmed," Abdallah al-Harthi, a senior Omani relief official, said on Thursday.

Three people were killed in Iran's southern port of Bandar-e Jask when a river overflowing as a result of Cyclone Gonu caused their vehicle to overturn.

The US military's Joint Typhoon Warning Centre said that the storm continued to lose steam, dropping off to tropical storm strength early on Thursday.

The centre predicted Cyclone Gonu would hit the Iranian northeast coast late on Thursday but was likely to spare Iran's offshore oil installations that lie more than 200km to the west.

                        Panic

Tens of thousands of Iranians who fled the worst tropical storm to hit the region in decades sought shelters on Thursday as they awaited a second round of stormy winds and heavy rainfall.

Cyclone Gonu hit Iran's southern coast late on Wednesday after arriving across the Strait of Hormuz from Oman, packing winds of 200km an hour - damaging some clay-built houses.

Officials said that over 40,000 people had been evacuated from coastal areas in the southern Sistan-Baluchestan and Hormozgan provinces to safer places.

"We are expecting the second wave in the next hours to hit the province and we are already seeing the rain," Yasser Hazbavi, the head of Hormozgan's natural disaster committee, said.

"We have evacuated the beach areas, and the situation is not back to normal yet. We are waiting for second wave which even could be more intense," he said.

"We are asking the people to remain in the sanctuaries and wait for our further announcements."

Hospitals in both provinces are on high alert to receive any casualties but it did not appear that the cyclone had caused death or severe injuries.

Gonu Cyclone keeps lashing southern Iranian islands, cities

Gonu Cyclone keeps lashing southern Iranian islands, cities

Strongest tropical storm to hit Persian Gulf region in decades, Cyclone Gonu, that originated over Sea of Oman, lashed that country, including its capital, hit Iran's islands and southern coast cities as of Wednesday afternoon.

Early Wednesday evening strong winds snapped tree branches, thunder storm lashed, and torrential rain poured over Iran's farthest southeastern coast city of Chabahar, causing Chabahar University officials to call off all classes and evacuate some 4,000 boy and girl students towards safe havens in nearby heights.

The speed of Gonu that was originally around 20 kilometers per hour with winds exceeding 200 KM/h was measured between fifty to sixty kilometers when it lashed Chabahar.

The city residents, and particularly primary and high schools students, too, were evacuated about two hours in advance.

Some storm experts in the region said the severeness of the storm in Chabahar and Konarak port cities had been unprecedented in past 30 years and the level of sea water, too kept on rising as the storm got momentum.

Some people took refuge in their cars when the storm hit, while others rushed to nearest shopping malls and markets.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Lines, HOMA, cancelled its entire flights from Konarak Port International Air Port for 48 hours due to unfavorable weather conditions, including one scheduled for Mashhad, one for Tehran, and one for Bandar Abbas.

In country's capital city, Tehran, the Health Ministry announced that the entire hospitals, health and medical centers in
Sistan-o-Baluchestan and Hormuzgan provinces were on red alerts and ready to offer services to the cyclone victims.

Sufficient bottled drinking water, and medicine was rushed to the storm hit regions upon issuance of red alert warning by country's Natural Disasters Headquarters and necessary measures were adopted for erecting a number of field hospitals.

The electricity networks of Chabahar and Konarak port cities that were destroyed during the cyclone were reconstructed urgently by country's electricity technicians at Energy Ministry affiliated Tavanir Company hours later and the technicians are still working to restore the remainder of electrical reconstruction work.

Cyclone Gonu lashed Bandar Abbas port city and various parts of Hormozgan Province at around 17;45 pm Wednesday night with strong winds measured at 200 kilometers per hour, braking strong trees, cutting off electricity, and causing fires in some city locations.

Residents of Iran's Qeshm and Lark islands were evacuated and asked not to return to their cities at least till Thursday afternoon and in Jask torrential rains led to floods that filled at least forty residential homes.

In Kish Island, security measures were adopted and the islanders were warned to be alert, although the cyclone's route was not towards the island.

At around 20 pm Wednesday night Head of Hormuzgan Province Natural Disasters Headquarters warned Bandar Abbas port city residents that the second wave of the cyclone might hit their city at around midnight.

Yasser Hazbavi, all the same asked the city's bakeries to keep baking till midnight, providing bread for the storm hit victims.

Highway Patrol of the Islamic Republic of Iran, too, announced at 10:36 a.m. that Chabahar-Zarabad-Jask road in Sistan-o-Baluchestan has been blocked, announced phone number 882 55 555 (ten lines) for travellers seeking alternative routs round the clock.

Head of Kish Island Meteorology Organization, too, announced late Wednesday night that Gonu that originated over the Sea of Oman is not a Tsunami.

Mahmoud Bahrami added in an interview with IRNA, "Tsunamis take shape due to earthquakes at sea bottom, while this cyclone was formed due to sudden heat increase and over-evaporation of Indian Ocean water."
He said that the height of waves due to Gonu were as high as 12 meters at Oman shores.

Bahrami said that the speed of cyclone Gonu is decreasing and predicted that it would keep roaming and lashing southern Iranian coasts for the next couple of days.

He concluded arguing, "This storm keeps changing directions and no one knows where it would lash next."
