TEHRAN -- A prominent Iranian reformist cleric was arrested in the holy city of Qom Wednesday, on the orders of a special court in charge of the clergy, the ISNA student news agency reported.
Hadi Ghabel is a member of the executive council of the Iranian Islamic Participation Front, which was the main party in parliament that served until 2004, under then-president Mohammad Khatami.
"He was sent to the special clergy tribunal with his personal affairs and documents," the agency quoted an unnamed court official as saying.
No explanation was given as to why Ghabel, who had also been detained in April 2000, was arrested.
"Five policemen appeared in the morning at Hadi Ghabel's home, and took him away after searching the house for one hour," his family said in a statement posted on the party's Internet site.
It said the police took away his personal documents, as well as his computer.
