NEW DELHI: National champion Tania Sachdev claimed the biggest title of her career when she beat a strong field in the Asian women’s chess championship at Teheran on Tuesday.
Leader after the eighth and penultimate round on Monday evening, the Delhi-based Woman Grandmaster drew her ninth round game with China’s Ju Wenjun to tally 6.5 points. The splendid performance also helped her qualify for the World Cup for the first time.
Top seed China’s Ruan Lufei, who defeated Iran’s Atousa Pourkashiyan in the final round, matched Tania’s tally but was adjudged runner up due to inferior progressive score. Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thanh An headed a three-way tie for the third spot at six points to take the third qualifying spot for the World Cup.
Great show
Fourth seeded Tania’s feat, coming close to the victorious campaigns of Surya Shekhar Ganguly and D. Harika in the Asian Zonal championship at Dhaka last month, has been a stupendous one since she came out strongest in the field that boasted for several Chinese and Vietnamese contenders.
Tania, a former Asian junior girls champion, now joins the continental championship’s roll of honour that includes Rohini Khadilkar (1983), Anupama Gokhale (1985 and 1987) and Bhagyashree Thipsay (1991). It was Tania’s eighth round victory over second seeded Chinese Huang Qian that established her at the top with a half-point lead.
