The death of a dolphin that washed ashore in Ventura County may be linked to sonar exercises conducted by warships of the U.S. Navy's San Diego-based Third Fleet,it was reported today.
The dolphin washed ashore on the beach of San Nicolas Island, which is owned by the Navy, on Jan. 29 during the final days of sonar exercises, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Although researchers have yet to determine a cause of death, a dissection of the northern right whale dolphin's head revealed blood and other fluid in its ears and ear canals, The Times reported.
