  • Clash Ends Early After Bottle Incident

  • #2
A Real Betis fan who threw a bottle at Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro said he was angry at the score.

Carmelo Pena Rodriguez struck Ribeiro in the face with a plastic bottle filled with liquid in the 65th minute of Saturday's match at Betis. The Athletic goalkeeper, who needed six stitches in his right cheek, was stretchered off seven minutes later with play abandoned and Athletic leading 2-1.

"I was fed up with what was happening in the game," Pena Rodriguez told police, according to the website of sports paper AS Web on Monday.

The 40-year-old Sevilla resident, who got into the match using a neighbour's membership card, was charged with public disorder and causing injury, with bail set at 3,000 euros ($4,705). Pena Rodriguez was released from prison Monday after his wife met bail.

The Spanish federation is expected to take a decision on sanctions by Tuesday. Betis wants to play out the remaining minutes of the game while Athletic wants to be awarded the victory.

Betis can also expect a stadium ban.

Last year it was forced to play three matches away from the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium when a fan knocked former Sevilla coach Juande Ramos unconscious with a bottle, also thrown from the stands.
