  • Man claims he is 'pregnant'

Is this man really pregnant? Thomas Beatie claims he is - and the baby is due in July.
    Confused?

Well, here's the Science bit: he's had partial sex change surgery though is legally classified as a man after having testosterene treatment and having surgery to remove his breasts.

He has a wife and lives in Bend, Oregon and says he's looking forward to being his daughter's father.

Doctors say it is all perfectly possible: he's able to conceive because he didn't have reconstructive surgery to the lower half of his body including his reproductive organs.

    Donor sperm

He claims to have been artificially inseminated using donor sperm.

News of the pregnancy was broken by a magazine aimed at lesbian, gay and transgender readers, The Advocate.

Its editor Anne Stockwell says they believe him. She said: "We asked Thomas to supply us with the name of his doctor, we called her and she confirmed that his pregnancy is proceeding as it should."

In the article he states: "Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am."

While medical and social commentators here debate the rights and wrongs of the issue and the effect all this is likely to have on the child, people back in Bend aren't too sure what to make of it.

Neighbour Ron Schlieper told reporters: "Quite frankly I think it's a hoax, I saw him just a few days ago, he didn't look like that."

He was born as a female and never had surgery on his reproductive organs, so I fail to see how this is surprising.

The "pregnant man" is speaking out about his decision to have a child – saying, "I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child."

In a special exclusive featured in this week's PEOPLE and on Thursday's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Thomas Beatie, a transgender male, talks about the baby he and wife Nancy are expecting this summer. "If Nancy could get pregnant, I wouldn't be doing this," Beatie tells PEOPLE of his wife's hysterectomy. "Who hires a surrogate if they are perfectly capable of carrying their own child?"

Click play for a teaser from Thursday's Oprah. Beatie told Oprah: "I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn't define who I am. Ironically, being pregnant doesn't make me feel any more female or feminine."

Thomas Beatie, also known as The Pregnant Man, has given birth to a girl, he confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Beatie, 34, who began life as a woman and legally switched to a male identity, while preserving his female reproductive organs, and his wife Nancy, 46, welcomed a daughter at an Oregon hospital on June 29. Both Beatie and his daughter are healthy and doing well, he tells PEOPLE.

Beatie, who took twice-weekly doses of testosterone and had his breasts surgically removed during his female-to-male transition, made headlines around the globe last April when he announced in an exclusive interview in PEOPLE and on The Oprah Winfrey Show that he was expecting a child – while legally living as a man.

Raised in Hawaii, he spent the first two decades of his life as Tracy Lagondino, a Girl Scout, former model and finalist in a Miss Hawaii Teen USA pageant. Beatie told PEOPLE that he began to dress and live as a man in his 20s, in time officially changing his gender on his passport and driver's license.

In 2003, he legally married Nancy, a divorced mother of two who had had a hysterectomy as a result of endometriosis.

The couple became pregnant using donor sperm and Thomas's eggs, through artificial insemination, after relocating in 2005 to Bend, Ore., where they operate a T-shirting printing business.

Their baby girl is Thomas's first child. "The only thing different about me is that I can't breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," he told PEOPLE.

Despite published reports, Beatie says the baby was not delivered via C-section. He intends to publish a book about his experience this fall.

It's a boy for Thomas Beatie, better known as the Pregnant Man.

Beatie, who was born a woman and then underwent a sex change operation, gained international attention last year when it was revealed he had become perhaps the first legally transgender male to get pregnant. A photo of the bearded Beatie with a pregnant belly became a sensation.

Just months after he gave birth to a daughter, Beatie told ABC's Barbara Walters he was pregnant again. ABC now reports that Beatie, 35, and wife Nancy, 46, welcomed their second child, a healthy boy, early Tuesday morning.

Sources tell ABC it was a "natural childbirth" and that Nancy will nurse their son, as she did with daughter Susan.
