Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo says he will make an announcement to clarify where his future lies within the next few days.

The Portugal winger, 23, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Speaking after Portugal's exit from Euro 2008, Ronaldo said: "In two or three days' time I will announce my future because my tournament is over.

"I will speak to United. I will try to reach an agreement and we will see."

Ronaldo failed to inspire Portugal on Thursday as they slumped to a 3-2 defeat to Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

The midfielder was in scintillating form throughout the domestic season and scored 42 goals as United claimed a Premier League and Champions League double.

When asked if he has made a decision regarding a move to Real Madrid, he replied: "No, not yet."

Manchester United have already reported Real Madrid to world governing body Fifa over their public courtship of Ronaldo, although the organisation decided to take no formal action.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has revealed he will undergo surgery on a foot injury which has been bothering him for three months.

"I'm going to have an operation now," said the winger.

"I have had a small problem for about three months. I'll have the operation and then have a good recovery period."

Cristiano Ronaldo will make an announcement over his Manchester United future in 'two or three days'.

Ronaldo is set to indicate where he wishes to play his football next season following Portugal's Euro 2008 quarter-final exit at the hands of Germany.

Primera Division giants Real Madrid have expressed strong interest in the 23-year-old forward, and it has been suggested they are poised to launch a record-breaking offer for his services.

    Over

Ronaldo insists he has yet to make a decision over his future, but Sky Sports News understands that he is set to leave the Premier League and UEFA Champions League holders.

"In two or three days time I will announce my future because the tournament is over for me," said Ronaldo.

"I will speak to Manchester United. I will try to reach an agreement and we will see."

When asked if he has made a decision regarding a move to Real, he replied: "No, not yet."

    Injury

Ronaldo also revealed he has been carrying a foot injury for the past three months.

He added: "I'm going to have an operation now. I have had a small problem for about three months, in my foot.

"I'll have the operation and then have a good recovery period."

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted very strongly that he is looking to leave the European champions for Real Madrid this summer.

The 23-year-old, following Portugal's 3-2 defeat to Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, spoke about his club future.

"In two or three days time I will announce my future because the tournament is over for me," he said in Portuguese after the game.

"I will speak to Manchester United.

"I will try to reach an agreement and we will see."

Ronaldo helped fire United to a Premier League and Champions League double this season.

When asked if he has made a decision regarding a move to Real Madrid, he replied: "No, not yet."

The winger, one of the world's top players, is still under contract with the Red Devils but Spanish champions Real have been in hot pursuit of him since the end of the season.

Yesterday the veteran keeper revealed that he had told the German defenders just how to go about stopping Ronaldo, claiming that an ex Arsenal colleague had found him out.

According to The Mirror, Ronaldo simply laughed when he was asked to comment by a reporter and said he remembers scoring many a goal against the former Arsenal keeper.

Ronaldo also took the opportunity to respond to Germany captain Michael Ballack, who he suggested had engaged in mind games ahead of tonight's mouthwatering quaterfinal by labeling Portugal as favourites.

"I don't know why Ballack said that but it's not important because in the end the team that plays better will win," said the United star.

"The details will solve the match, not the talk. The main objective is to win, and our team is confident they will.

"And as for suggestions that Ricardo is a weak link, I just don't agree. Ricardo has been having a great championship, he's been playing well.

"It is going to be a very, very good game because both teams are very good and play at a high level," he added.

"I would say Portugal is more technical and Germany has more physically strong players.

"But this won't be a problem for us because our players have great experience and we know very well what we're going to do on the pitch.

"But Germany have a great team. I watched them against Austria on television and saw some nice football.

"Germany is strong and mature - you know it's going be a tough match for us. I would say it's a very difficult game but every team has a weakness and that includes Germany."

BASEL , Switzerland (AFP) — Both Real Madrid and Manchester United want his services for next season, but Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo must now reveal his future plans after his Euro 2008 heart-break on Thursday.

The Premier League champions want Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford until 2012, while Real confirmed Thursday they are waiting to hear whether the 23-year-old wants to stay in England or move to Spain.

Having insisted he will only decide after his Euro 2008 campaign is over, the boy from Madeira must announce where his future lies after a below-par performance as Germany inflicted a 3-2 Euro 2008 defeat on Portugal in Basel.

It is easy to see why European giants are fighting for Ronaldo's services.

Last season, he equalled, then obliterated, George Best's record goals tally of 32 in a single season for Manchester United when he scored 42 goals.

He tormented the Czech Republic with a goal and created two more in his side's dazzling 3-1 win in Geneva on June 11, but Ronaldo had a quiet night just when it mattered most at Euro 2008.

He has already suffered from stage fright this season - he missed a penalty in the Champions League semi-final in Barcelona and was below-par in the Moscow final, when he missed a penalty in the shoot-out, though he did score in open play.

And he has a poor record against the top four sides in England's Premier League.

Before the game, Germany's ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had said before the game he knew the secret to containing Ronaldo which seemed to work as the defence kept him in check.

A good run on the left led to a poor cross after just three minutes and just before the 20 minute mark a pass from Simao into the box gave him a half-chance, but the German defence scrambled away the danger.

But having fallen two goals behind after Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose struck for Germany, Ronaldo helped provide a reply when he broke down the right flank and fired at Lehmann.

His shot was blocked, but Portugal captain Nuno Gomes was on hand to score from the rebound on 40 minutes.

And in stoppage time at the end of the first-half, Ronaldo drove his shot across Lehmann's goal as an equaliser threatened.

After the break, Ronaldo was brought down by German defender Arne Friedrich, who stepped on his ankle as he ran past, just for good measure.

It just about summed up his night.

After Gemany captain Michael Ballack scored Germany's third goal, Ronaldo blasted a free-kick high and wide on 68 minutes before Helder Postiga grabbed a consolation goal with time running out.

The wonder-winger gave the strongest hint yet that he's looking to secure a move to the Santiago Bernabéu from Manchester United.

When asked by Portuguese sports website Record.pt about a possible future at Real Madrid, he replied, "The possibilities are great, but like I said it does not depend on me.

"Over the coming days we'll see if we can reach an agreement."

"I have many desires. Over the coming days, we'll see if we have news," he smiled.

Indeed, ABola.pt went one step further, quoting Ronaldo as saying: "I think there is a concrete offer."

            Portugal Elimination

The young goalscorer also offered his thoughts on Portugal's 3-2 loss to Germany.

"We are all sad," he said of the dressing room.

"We really wanted to win this game because we knew we would be just one step from the final. We lost due to two free-kick situations, but that's just football.

"It is a big disappointment because we know we have a better team. We practiced free-kick situations during the week but we could not stop them. Portugal are better but what matters is the result, Germany won and they are in the semi-finals."

            Language Barrier

But it was the move abroad that seemed to garner the most press attention. Speculation will mount further after the player himself confirmed that he now has a firm command of the Castellano language.

"I can speak Spanish," he said to Record. "And I'm always practicing English and French."

And A Bola believe that he will be able to put such linguistic skills to the test soon.

"I think so," he said when quizzed once more on the Madrid offer.

"Do I want to go? The people know what I want. In a few days there will be news."

Of course, English could still play a role if he remains at Manchester United, and there he could well come up against former national team mentor Luiz Felipe Scolari, now of Chelsea.

"He would be my rival," Ronaldo said of this eventuality to Record. "I'll want to win against him and he'll want to do the same against me."

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon and Manchester United chief executive David Gill will hold talks in Switzerland next week over Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, the Spanish sports daily AS reported Saturday.

The private talks will take place on Monday at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon on the sidelines of a wider meeting of European clubs, AS said.

United on Friday moved to quell further talk that their prize asset was about to link up with the Bernabeu club, saying the rumours were "utter nonsense and totally laughable. Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale".

Manchester United have repeatedly said the player - whose contract runs until 2012 - is definitely not for sale.

Last month the club reported nine-time European champions Real to UEFA for trying to unsettle Ronaldo, though the global governing body have yet to make their decision known.

Ronaldo, currently an injury concern, is not scheduled to join the club on their pre-season tour of South Africa which begins on July 18.

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo had surgery Monday on his right ankle, and the Premier League team says it will know in a month when he’ll be able to return.

The Portuguese star could miss the start of the season next month. He revealed after last month’s European Championship he had been playing in pain the last three months.

Ronaldo arrived at the hospital Sunday night. He is expected to leave the Academic Medical Center on Tuesday, hospital spokesman Johan Kortenray told The Associated Press.

“The initial indications are that the procedure was successful,” United said in a statement. “Cristiano will begin his convalescence under the direction of club medical staff and an estimation of his return to full fitness will be possible following review by the specialist in one month.”

Ronaldo scored 42 goals for Man United last season, powering them to them to triumphs in the Premier League and Champions League. But at Euro 2008, Portugal was ousted in the quarterfinals.

The ankle surgery comes amid speculation of a possible move to Real Madrid. Madrid president Ramon Calderon said Sunday he is ready to begin transfer talks with Manchester United, but is not confident about signing the winger even if Manchester United consents.

Cristiano Ronaldo hinted that he may ask to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, saying he agreed with FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s assertion that he is being treated like a slave.

Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals last season, hasn’t asked for a transfer but has said he’d like to play Real Madrid. He has almost four years remaining on his contract, and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says Ronaldo isn’t for sale. Still, Blatter has said United should let Ronaldo depart if he wants to.

“I completely agree with the statements of the president. He is right,” Ronaldo told Portuguese broadcaster TVI on Thursday.

Ronaldo reiterated his previously stated desire to join the Spanish La Liga champion.

“You know what I said, what I want and what I would like,” he said. “Now I have to wait and see.”

The 23-year-old wing expects to be sidelined 10-12 weeks following surgery Monday on his right ankle. He said he would spend a two weeks on crutches and it will be two months before he can kick a ball.

“If the player wants to play somewhere else, then a solution should be found,” Blatter told Sky News. “If he stays in a club where he does not feel comfortable to play, then it’s not good for the player and for the club … I’m always in favor to protect the player, and if the player, he wants to leave, let him leave. … In football there is too much modern slavery.”

Real Madrid's relentless pursuit of Ronaldo and the player's unwillingness to publicly commit himself to United mean an assessment of his fitness after surgery on a troublesome ankle will almost be secondary to a face-to-face meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson and discussions over his future.

Conflicting stories in today's newspapers, however, even question whether such a meeting will take place.

The Mirror quote unnamed sources close to the player saying that Ronaldo is reluctant to return to Manchester at all, and will try and force United's hand by staying away from Old Trafford as long as possible.

Ramon Calderon, the Real president who has repeatedly inflamed the situation between the two clubs over the course of the summer with deliberately placed comments in the Spanish media, stayed behind in England after the club's pre-season tournament at the Emirates Stadium hoping to speak with United.

That meeting did not materialise, however, reports suggest that what the Mirror describe as "cracks in United's resolve" are starting to appear.

The weakening, in private, of United's hard line stance that Ronaldo is not for sale has prompted his unwillingness to face Ferguson in Manchester, hopeful that a £70 million deal can now be struck between the two clubs.

Reports elsewhere suggest that a deal has been done in principle but on the understanding that the move will be delayed until next summer, allowing United to get another season out of Ronaldo while he is in his prime and still cash in on his value in a year's time.

A Sun exclusive suggests that United's owners, the Glazer family, are ready to hand Ronaldo a get-out clause that will allow for his release in 2009, agreeing with the player that he is free to join Real for a fee of around £65 million at that time.

The paper quote another unnamed United insider who claims that Ferguson remains one of only a couple of people at the club who see value in trying to forced Ronaldo to stay against his wishes.

The compromise of delaying a transfer is designed to appease Ferguson and get him to concede defeat in his efforts to hang on to the player.

Ferguson has yet to be convinced, but with Real unlikely to drop their interest having been rebuffed in attempts to buy world player of the year, Kaka, the longer the situation remains unresolved the more likely he is to acquiesce to the arrangement.

Ferguson spoke to the player face-to-face in Lisbon prior to United's pre-season trip to South Africa and left content that Ronaldo would be a United player next season.

However, reports of Ronaldo's change of heart will only at fuel to the growing animosity aimed at Real.

Ronaldo's injury means he will not play before the transfer deadline at the end of August.

Ronaldo is expected to arrive back in Manchester tomorrow amid claims he will demand to be allowed to move to the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese winger is desperate to end weeks of endless conjecture by attempting to convince United chief executive David Gill and manager Sir Alex Ferguson that his future lies in Spain.

But despite Real's persistent public interest, Ronaldo may be forced to stay in England for another year after they completed the signing of Van der Vaart, another long-term target.

Madrid have stated previously that they will not be held to ransom over the signing of Ronaldo and will only offer what they deem to be appropriate.

However, it is understood they are prepared to pay in excess of £60 million and some sources suggest Ronaldo's hopes of joining the Liga champions have only been enhanced by a cruciate knee ligament injury to Wesley Sneijder that will keep the Holland international sidelined for six months.

As a prelude to his departure, Van der Vaart was omitted from Hamburg's squad to face Real Madrid in the Emirates Cup, hosted at the weekend by Arsenal, as he was introduced to his prospective team-mates in London after both clubs ironed out a deal.

Announcing his new five-year contract agreement on his personal website, Van der Vaart, 25, said: "Last night everything came together, and I am now moving to Real Madrid.

"As everybody might know I have always wanted to move to Spain, because I have a strong bond with that country.

"Now I'm going to play for Real Madrid. It's a dream comes true."

Van der Vaart becomes Madrid's fifth Dutch player - the others being Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Royston Drenthe - and the second summer arrival joining promising Argentine defender, Ezequiel Garay at the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo pledged to stay with Manchester United for at least the coming season but still wants to join Real Madrid, according to a Portuguese newspaper interview published Wednesday.

The winger was quoted as telling Publico that he believed the Spanish champion submitted a “very high bid” after he expressed a desire to join them.

“For some time what I wanted was for Manchester to have agreed to my transfer to Madrid,” Ronaldo told the paper. “Saying otherwise would be fooling myself and others.”

But manager Alex Ferguson convinced him to stay at Old Trafford next season when the pair met in Lisbon last month.

The 23-year-old Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals last season, has four seasons remaining on his contract.

“Ferguson listened to my arguments, I listened to his and we agreed that it would be best for both parties for me to continue,” Ronaldo said. “This why I can affirm that I will play for Manchester during the next season.”

Ronaldo, sidelined until at least October following ankle surgery, said he will display full commitment to United.

“Before there are rumors and speculation that I will be upset, I want to make one thing clear: anyone who says or writes such a thing will be lying,” he said. “I will be playing for Manchester with all my heart and soul. I will fight for and honor my jersey with the same dedication I have always shown.”

Ronaldo apologized for sparking the rift between United and Madrid, saying he was “the main culprit for all this controversy.”

“The boy has been going through some troubled times in terms of the approaches from the people in Spain, but once he knew my stance, he then settled down and he gave the interview tonight, which we are all pleased about,” Ferguson said after Wednesday’s 0-0 exhibition draw against Juventus. “It is very positive, and we will welcome him back here this week.”
