    • Israel: Iran may be 6 months from bomb know-how

NEW YORK- Iran may be as little as six months away from completing the know-how to build a nuclear bomb, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said on Monday.

"The question is not if they are going to hold that bomb in 2009 or 2010 or 2011, the question is when they will have the full knowledge," Shalom told a meeting of U.S. Jewish community leaders in New York.

"According to our people, security and intelligence, they are very, very close. It may be only six months before they will have that full knowledge."

The authoritative, independent International Institute for Strategic Studies said this month Tehran is at least five years away from producing enough fissile material for a single bomb, and that 15 years was a more likely time frame.

Shalom did not say when he expected Iran to have the material to make a bomb.

He was speaking as the board of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, was meeting in Vienna to consider whether to refer Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions over its secretive nuclear program.

Iran insists its nuclear program is purely civilian to make electricity. The United States and Europe suspect Tehran of seeking a weapons capability.

      • Bush Administration procurement chief David H. Safavian was connected to probe of lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Bush Official Arrested in Corruption Probe
By R. Jeffrey Smith and Susan Schmidt
        Washington Post Staff Writers
        Tuesday, September 20, 2005

The Bush administration's top federal procurement official resigned Friday and was arrested yesterday, accused of lying and obstructing a criminal investigation into Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff's dealings with the federal government. It was the first criminal complaint filed against a government official in the ongoing corruption probe related to Abramoff's activities in Washington.

The complaint, filed by the FBI, alleges that David H. Safavian, 38, a White House procurement official involved until last week in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, made repeated false statements to government officials and investigators about a golf trip with Abramoff to Scotland in 2002 .

        • No one trusts Iran: Rice

WASHINGTON - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stressed Iran's international isolation, saying no one trusts Tehran on nuclear issues, in an interview.

"Maybe the whole world is wrong and we should all trust them, but nobody does," Rice said in an interview published on Time Magazine's website.

She spoke mocklingly, according to Time, of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's assertion before the United Nations this week that Iran has an "inalienable right" to a nuclear energy program.

"Their problem is they can argue all they want about their rights are. The problem is they've gotten into a situation in which nobody believes it is safe for them to exercise those rights, if indeed they have those rights," she said.

With the EU's three main states pushing for Iran to be reported to the UN Security Council for "breaches" of international nuclear safeguards, Rice said the United States wants to see the largest possible consensus behind the move.

"We have the votes now, but the question is, do you have enough of a consensus to send the right kind of message," she said.

Britain, France and Germany on Tuesday distributed a draft resolution titled "Iran: Elements for an IAEA Board Resolution" to members of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) board of governors which is meeting in Vienna this week, according to a copy of the draft obtained by AFP.

The European trio and the United States are calling for Iran to be reported to the Security Council over potentially weapons-related nuclear fuel work and threatening to push for a vote if consensus at the 35-nation board can not be achieved, diplomats told AFP.

                    • Iranians mob UK embassy after IAEA nuclear vote

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Scores of protesters incensed by European Union moves to send Iran's nuclear case to the U.N. Security Council hurled stones and smoke bombs over the walls of the British embassy compound in Tehran on Wednesday.
The violence, easily contained by riot police, coincided with a vote by lawmakers to speed discussion of a bill that would force the government to scale back its cooperation with the U.N. atomic watchdog, state media reported.

The bill to limit the scope of nuclear inspections is in retaliation for a resolution approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors last week recommending Iran's case be sent to the U.N. Security Council.

If approved, the bill would oblige the government to stop implementing the Additional Protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which allows U.N. inspectors to make short-notice visits to nuclear facilities.

About 300 protesters gathered outside the British embassy in Tehran on Wednesday to denounce the IAEA resolution submitted by Britain, France and Germany.

"Nuclear energy is our legitimate right," they chanted. "We will fight, we will die, we will never surrender."

During the protest, organized by the hardline Basij militia, British and U.S. flags were burned. Groups of protesters hurled stones, tomatoes and smoke bombs into the walled compound and some tried to push past police to reach the embassy's main gate.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage to the embassy.
