Saudi Arabia's King Fahd is being treated in hospital amid conflicting reports about his condition.
The authorities say he is in good health after being admitted for tests in the capital, Riyadh, on Friday.

But some medical sources suggest the king is being treated for possible pneumonia following a bout of flu.

The BBC's Frank Gardner says there have been rumours about King Fahd's health before but the latest scare could be more serious.

In 1995 he suffered a stroke, and Crown Prince Abdullah has performed most of his functions since then.

Prince Abdullah is regarded as successor to the throne.

Opposition sources in London predict that if the king dies there may well be a power struggle against the ruling princes.


There is heavy security around Riyadh's King Faisal hospital. Saudi security sources said a number of princes from the ruling family have been arriving in the capital.

The royal palace has not given details of the king's symptoms.

On Saturday Reuters news agency quoted officials as saying he was stable following treatment to drain water from his lungs.

TEHRAN (AFP) - Leading Iranian presidential candidate and top cleric Akbar Hasemi Rafsanjani has again moved to dispel the widely-held belief that he is extremely rich -- insisting that he has spent nearly all his money.

"Before the revolution I was among the rich seminary students," Rafsanjani was quoted as saying by the student news agency ISNA.

"After the victory of the revolution, I gradually spent my assets on living, my children and the revolution. Now I only have a plot of land in city of Qom and I do not have any house or land in Tehran," he insisted during a meeting with students.

Although informal opinion polls have placed Rafsanjani as the current favorite to win the presidency on June 17, the 70-year-old cleric remains the target of the commonly-held belief that he is one of the Islamic republic's wealthiest men.

The son of a pistachio farmer, Rafsanjani went on to become a leading figure in the 1979 revolution. He served as president from 1989 to 1997, and is seeking a comeback by campaigning on a moderate, centrist platform.

According to ISNA, Rafsanjani said he had handed Iran's judiciary a list of his assets -- from both now and before the revolution. In July last year he made a similar denial of his wealth, and challenged his critics to try and prove he was rich.

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 26, 2005 (Intermedia.org) - A majority of Iranians support their country’s quest for nuclear weapons technology, according to the results of a random telephone survey released today by InterMedia, the Washington, D.C.-based media and public attitudes research institute. Fifty-five (55) percent of the 2,001 Iranians questioned support the country’s development of nuclear weapons technology, according to InterMedia, which commissioned the survey, with 46 percent of the respondents strongly supporting the nuclear program.

“Despite the U.S. perception that a nuclear Iran is a threat to American and global interests, Iranians themselves are motivated to support this program for various reasons,” said Dr. Haleh Vaziri, InterMedia’s Regional Research Manager for the Middle East and North Africa. “Some of these reasons are national and regional in scope: nuclear weapons are seen as potential symbols of national pride. They would also affirm what many in Iran believe, that the country deserves a place as a recognized regional power. Finally, some think the country needs a nuclear arsenal for deterrence in what is a dangerous neighborhood.”

The InterMedia survey covered a range of current media and political issues. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed believe the country is currently heading in the right direction, and 44 percent saying that an Islamic republic based on the clergy’s guardianship is the best model for the country’s future -- disappointing numbers for advocates of reform in Iran. “People may have lost hope in the reformists -- at least for now,” Vaziri said. Iran will hold presidential elections June 17.

At the same time, the numbers may not tell the whole story: “We found there was a greater reluctance on the part of respondents to speak out this year, as perhaps there was more fear of reprisal,” said Vaziri. “We had higher refusal rates to the survey and believe the chance of respondent bias is high when Iranians when asked over the phone about their domestic political options.” Telephone penetration throughout Iran is roughly 85 percent, but is higher in major cities than in rural areas, where it drops to about 60 percent.

AMARA, Iraq (AFP) - A British soldier was killed in a bomb attack against a military convoy in southern Iraq on Sunday, Iraqi and British officials said.

"A British soldier was killed and three others wounded when a roadside bomb exploded around 9:50 am (0550 GMT) as a British military convoy was driving on the main road near Kahla," Iraqi police Captain Karim Asab told AFP.

Kahla is in southern Iraq near the main city of Basra, where the bulk of the Britain's 8,000 troops are based.

London has been Washington's staunchest ally in Iraq and has the second largest military contingent there after the US forces.

Thus far, 89 British military personnel have died in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi welcomed efforts made by the Europeans for Iran's joining the World Trade Organization, terming it as a positive step, according to IRNA.

Addressing domestic and foreign reporters in his weekly press conference, Asefi said Iran believes its rights were ignored without any justification.

"We have told the Europeans nothing will replace our legal rights of having access to fuel cycle and peaceful use of nuclear technology.

"The Europeans stressed they made great efforts for Iran's WTO joining due to Iran's cooperation with Europe in nuclear negotiations and the country's goodwill and we accept this," he said.

The spokesman dismissed any link between the US approval of Iran's membership at the WTO and recent Geneva nuclear talks, saying the two issues should be dealt with separately.

He said Iran's WTO joining was set to be discussed after the Geneva talks which it shows that the Europeans believe there is no link between Geneva negotiations and acceptance of Iran's call to join the organization.

Nazi hunters urge Austria to seize war crimes suspect.
The Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Centre urged Austria on Thursday to prosecute a war crimes suspect who recently fled Croatia to southern Austria.

Milivoj Asner, 92, is on the centre's top 10 list of alleged Nazi accomplices sought under a "Last Chance" campaign launched last year to track down the last surviving suspects of Holocaust-era crimes against Jews and other minorities.

Asner fled Croatia last year shortly after being named as a target of the campaign, and was recently spotted in Klagenfurt, capital of the southern Austrian province of Carinthia, Efraim Zuroff, the centre's director in Israel, said.

"He played a very active role" in persecutions and deportations of hundreds of Jews, Serbs and Gypsies, to Nazi concentration camps as police chief in Slavonska Pozega, a city run by the Nazi-allied Croat Ustashe regime in World War II, Zuroff said.

Among the millions killed in Europe under Nazi persecution in the 1940's, six million Jews died under Adolf Hitler's "final solution" plan.

In a letter to Austria's Ambassador to Israel, Kurt Hengel, Zuroff wrote that "Asner's presence in Klagenfurt has been well-known to the Austrian authorities for months, but yet they have not taken any legal action against him."

Zuroff told Reuters there was "enormous" documentation available to prosecute Asner.

"You have to send a message that people like this belong in jail ... The passage of time has in no way diminished the culpability of perpetrators" of war crimes," Zuroff said.

Police said on Saturday they had charged a 12-year-old girl with attacking a young boy who was left with serious injuries including marks around his neck following an assault earlier in the week.

Anthony Hinchliffe, 5, was found wandering alone and distraught on Tuesday evening near woodlands in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, with injuries to his neck and bruising to his body.

Detectives originally treated the incident as attempted murder but on Friday night charged the girl with inflicting grievous bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The 12-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear at Dewsbury youth court on June 10.

Originally five children, all aged 11 or 12, were arrested in connection with the attack but the other four have all been released.

"Following extensive inquiries West Yorkshire police are no longer looking for any other suspects in connection with this investigation," a police spokeswoman said.

Hinchcliffe's family said he was taken from his mother's back garden and led to nearby woodlands, where he was injured. He was released from hospital on Wednesday.

"This has been a very distressing time for both myself and my family," the boy's mother, Terry Brown, said.

Spain holds 16 suspected Islamist militants

MADRID - Spanish police have arrested 16 suspected Islamist militants, 11 of whom were linked to al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

The other five were suspected of being linked to the March 2004 train bombings in Madrid, the ministry said in a statement.

More than 500 special police agents participated in the operation in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Cadiz, the ministry said.

The Barcelona arrests were part of a joint operation led by two judges leading separate investigations, a court official said.

BAGHDAD - A former Iraqi general believed to be Jordanian extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's "military adviser" was arrested west of Baghdad.


Abed Dawood Suleiman and his son, former army captain Raed Abed Dawood, were picked up in a morning raid on their house in Khalidiya, west of Baghdad, a defense ministry source said Wednesday.

Zarqawi, the Al-Qaeda frontman in Iraq, is believed to have masterminded much of the country's violence, including car and suicide bombings that killed almost 700 people in May alone. He has a 25-million-dollar price on his head.

Bush: Iran Vote Meant to Strengthen Power .


WASHINGTON - On the eve of Iran's presidential election, President Bush said the voting has been designed to keep power in the hands of a few rulers "through an electoral process that ignores the basic requirements of democracy."


"The Iranian people deserve a genuinely democratic system in which elections are honest — and in which their leaders answer to them instead of the other way around," Bush said in a statement released by the White House Thursday. "And to the Iranian people, I say: As you stand for your own liberty, the people of America stand with you."

The sharp criticism was in contrast to the administration's praise for Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two countries Bush has said could show the way toward democracy in the Middle East. White House press secretary Scott McClellan rejected the notion that the criticisms aimed at Iran fit Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

"Different circumstances around the world require different strategies and different approaches," McClellan said.

Friday's election will choose a successor to President Mohammad Khatami, who came to power in 1997 and is barred by law from seeking a third term. His attempts to introduce liberal reforms were thwarted by hard-line clerics loyal to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The election also comes as Iran faces international pressure over its nuclear program from the United States and Europe.

Seven candidates, most of them hard-liners, are competing in the race that has featured Western-style tactics such as distribution of colorful campaign posters. At least two of the candidates in Friday's polls have promised to improve Iran's relations with the United States, which severed relations after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. They are front-runner Hashemi Rafsanjani and the reformist former Cabinet Minister Mostafa Moin.

يك دانشجوى رشته معمارى به طور ناگهانى در جلسه امتحان پايان ترم بيهوش شد و پس از انتقال به بيمارستان جان باخت. ,پرديس, دانشجوى سال دوم رشته معمارى موسسه آموزش عالى ,علامه محدث نورى, شهرستان ,نور, ساعت ۱۰ صبح چهارشنبه گذشته جهت شركت در جلسه امتحان ,هندسه ۲, وارد سالن امتحانات شد. به گفته دوستان ,پرديس, وى براى دومين بار واحد هندسه ۲ را مى گذراند و با اطلاع از سختى اين امتحان و درحالى كه همچنان از خستگى امتحان متوالى دو روز گذشته فارغ نشده بود، بر روى صندلى چوبى پشت ميز طراحى قرار گرفت. هنوز دقايقى از شروع امتحان نگذشته بود كه دانشجويان با صحنه اخراج همكلاسى پرديس از سالن امتحانات به اتهام ,تقلب, روبه رو شدند. دانشجوى مذكور به مراقب امتحان توضيح داد كه مرتكب تقلب نشده است و اين ماجرا ادامه داشت. به گفته شاهدان حادثه، كمتر از ۱۰ دقيقه پس از اين اخراج ناگهان رنگ صورت پرديس به طرز كاملاً مشهودى تغيير كرد و دقايقى بعد، وى به دنبال سرگيجه شديد ناگهان تعادل خود را از دست داد و پس از برخورد محكم سرش با لبه ميز چوبى، بيهوش بر كف سالن امتحانات افتاد. به گفته همين شاهدان درحالى كه دو تن از دانشجويان دختر قصد بلند كردن وى را داشتند، با مخالفت مراقب امتحان مواجه شدند تا اين كه ,پرديس, به بخش حراست موسسه و سپس در حالى كه بر اثر ضربه وارده به سر، خون از دهانش بيرون آمده بود، توسط خودرو يكى از مسئولان حراست به بيمارستان,امام خمينى, شهرستان نور منتقل شد و امتحان ساير دانشجويان روند طبيعى خود را طى كرد. با انتقال پرديس به بيمارستان تلاش پزشكان پس از يك ساعت نتيجه نداد و وى بر روى تخت بيمارستان جان باخت و جسدش به پزشكى قانونى منتقل شد. بنا به گفته دانشجويان رشته معمارى موسسه عالى ,علامه محدث نورى, اين موسسه از ترم جارى اقدام به نصب دوربين هاى مداربسته در سالن هاى امتحانات كرده است. اين در حالى است كه سالن محل امتحان پرديس، دوربين مداربسته نداشت و خود وى نيز از اين موضوع اطلاع داشت. مهندس كلانى، مدير گروه رشته معمارى مؤسسه آموزش عالى علامه محدث نورى در مورد علت مرگ اين دانشجو گفت: با تاييد پزشك، علت مرگ ,پرديس, بر اثر استرس ناشى از امتحان كاملاً رد شده است. وى از سوى ديگر نصب دوربين هاى مداربسته در سالن امتحانات اين مؤسسه را تاييد و در توضيح علت نصب اين دوربين ها تاكيد كرد: متقاعد كردن دانشجوى خاطى در انجام تقلب در جلسه امتحان تنها با داشتن مدرك و دليل مى تواند صورت گيرد كه دوربين هاى مداربسته اين نقش را به خوبى ايفا مى كنند. از سوى ديگر يكى از نزديكان متوفى نيز گفت كه بيمارستان علت مرگ ,پرديس, را به آنها اعلام نكرده است. در اين حال تعدادى از دانشجويان اين موسسه در اعتراض به آنچه كه ,تعلل در انتقال دانشجوى متوفى به بيمارستان, اعلام كردند، دست به تجمع مقابل موسسه زدند. به گفته يكى از نزديكان متوفى والدين ,پرديس, قرار است در صورت اطمينان از تاخير در انتقال فرزندشان به بيمارستان، شكايتى را عليه مؤسسه تسليم مراجع قضايى كنند

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq said its forces had arrested one of the leaders of the Al-Qaeda network allegedly responsible for kidnapping Iraqis and foreigners.

The man, arrested two days ago in Baghdad, was identified in a government statement as Sami Ammar Hamid Mahmud, also known as Abu Aqil. It did not give his nationality but said he had been active outside Iraq.

"The aforementioned was responsible for managing and leading operations outside Iraq and was able to recruit Abu Salwa as emir (chief) of the Al-Qaeda network in Baghdad," the statement said Tuesday.

"Abu Aqil's cell was responsible for kidnapping Iraqis and foreign nationals to extract ransoms that would fund terror acts in Iraq."

درياى خزر، مهمترين توليد كننده نفتى معرفى شد


كارشناسان انرژى شركت كننده در نشست سازمان ملل متحد، اعلام داشتند، منطقه درياى خزر با داشتن ذخاير گاز طبيعى و نفت، مى تواند در كاهش وابستگى جهان به نفت خاورميانه نقش مهمى داشته باشد.
به گزارش خبرگزارى موج، گزارش سازمان ملل متحد نشان داد، در حال حاضر خاورميانه حدود سى درصد از نفت مصرفى جهان را تامين مى كند كه اين رقم تا سال 2020 به چهل درصد افزايش خواهد رسيد.
وجود نگرانى در افزايش وابستگى كشورهاى مصرف كننده نفت به اين منطقه، نگاه ها را به ديگر منابع انرژى در خارج از خاورميانه معطوف كرده است. كارشناسان در نشست سازمان ملل متحد در ژنو، توافق كردند، منطقه درياى خزر به زودى مى تواند به عنوان جايگزينى براى خاورميانه محسوب شود.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - More than six weeks after she disappeared from a home where family members were bludgeoned to death, an 8-year-old girl was found safe Saturday, sharing a meal with a registered sex offender at a Denny's restaurant in her hometown.


Shasta Groene was reunited with her father, but her 9-year-old brother, Dylan, remained missing and was feared dead, Kootenai County Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.

"Our initial information is that he may be deceased," Wolfinger said, adding that officials were continuing the search for him. He said investigators believe Dylan was alive when the children disappeared.

Joseph Edward Duncan III, a registered sex offender from Fargo, N.D., was arrested and charged with kidnapping. He was being held without bond, and Wolfinger said more charges were possible.

Duncan, 42, had an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a high-risk sex offender and was facing charges of molesting a 6-year-old boy in Minnesota. He had been released on bail in April, just weeks before the children disappeared.

Shasta was spotted by a waitress early Saturday just miles from the home where her mother, older brother and mother's boyfriend were discovered bound and bludgeoned to death on May 16.

Amber Deahn, 24, said she thought she recognized the girl eating onion rings, cheese sticks and chicken strips with an older man. Shasta's picture has been posted around town and shown in the media.

"It clicked in my brain that she looks familiar," she said.

Deahn tried to keep the pair at the restaurant longer by giving the girl crayons, coloring paper and a mask from the movie "Madagascar," and offering the girl dessert.

"I was trying to figure out a way to keep them there so the officers would have time to get there," she said.

Iran toughens punishments for alcohol crimes .

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's hardline-dominated parliament on Tuesday passed the outlines of a bill that imposes tougher punishments on those caught buying, selling or making alcohol, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Under the country's strict Islamic law, only members of non-Muslim religious minorities are allowed to make and drink alcohol. Trade in liquor is forbidden.

The bill's outlines almost doubles the punishment for distribution and production of alcohol, banned since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

"The offenders can be jailed from three months to one year or receive 74 lashes and be fined," IRNA reported. State employees involved in producing or selling alcohol, will be banned from working in governmental positions.

Parliament has yet to debate the bill's full details. To become law, the bill will then need the approval of the hardline Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog body.

Although illegal, alcohol is readily available on Iran's black market. Iran's clerical leaders blame the West for the problem of smuggled and home-made alcohol, saying it wants to lure Iranians away from pious religious observance.

Police stepped up raids in the last month on illegal distribution of alcohol, IRNA reported.

"Some 100,000 bottles of alcohol have been seized and 4,000 distributors have been arrested," said Reza Zarei, the police chief of Tehran province.

Iranian Jewish Spiritual Icon Dies.

Hacham Yedidia Shofet, a spiritual icon for Persian Jews both in Iran and the United States died last week at 96 in Los Angeles.

In Iran, Shofet served both as a religious leader and as the liaison representing Iran's Jewish community before the Shah's government. Shofet joined the thousands of Jews who left Iran following the 1979 Iranian revolution, but he continued to intercede for Jews in Iran by maintaining contact with various government and religious officials both within and outside of Iran.

"The death of this great man closes a chapter in the history of Iranian Jews," said Rabbi David Zargari of Torat Hayim.

Shofet was born in the central Iranian city of Kashan into a family with 12 generations of rabbis. Following his arrival in Tehran after World War II, he gradually gained prominence among Iran?s Jews and non-Jews for his eloquent speeches and ability to easily connect with all who approached for help.

Shofet is survived by his wife; six children; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

انفجارهای لندن چند کشته و زخمی برجای نهاده است

براساس خبرى كه لحظاتى پيش از سوى شبكه هاى خبرى غربى انتشار يافت، شمار مجروحان فاجعه انفجارهاى لندن تا زمان تنظيم اين خبر به 200 نفر رسيده است. همچنين پليس اسكاتلنديارد شمار انفجارها در ايستگاههاى مترو را شش و در اتوبوس 3 انفجار اعلام كرده است.
گفتنى است آمار جديد مجروحان تنها نتيجه تخليه يكى از ايستگاههاى منفجر شده است و كار بيرون كشيدن زخميان و كشته شده گان انفجارهاى دو ايستگاه ديگر هنوز ادامه دارد.

معاون اجتماعي وزير كشور با اشاره به نتايج تحقيق در خصوص ميزان شيوع سوءمصرف مواد محرك، انواع داروهاي روانگردان، الكل و سيگار در ميان بيش از 8 هزار نوجوان و جوان 15 تا 35 سال مناطق 22 گانه تهران گفت: 4 درصد جامعه آماري، داروي روانگردان، 2/7 درصد مواد محرك، 26 درصد الكل و 20 درصد سيگار مصرف مي*كنند.

اشرف بروجردي در گفت*وگو با ايسنا افزود: همچنين 48 درصد اين افراد سابقه مصرف سيگار در خانواده را دارند.
به گفته دبير شوراي اجتماعي كشور بر اساس اين بررسي كه در 450 مكان از جمله در دانشگاه*ها ، مدارس، پارك*ها، فرهنگسراها، سينماها، مشاغل و حرف، بيمارستانها، آموزشگاه*ها و ... صورت گرفته است، 12 درصد مصرف كنندگان مواد روانگردان از افسردگي خفيف، 5/3 درصد از افسردگي متوسط و نيم درصد از افسردگي شديد رنج مي*برند.
همچنين 5/11، 3 و نيم درصد مصرف*كنندگان مواد محرك به ترتيب دچار افسردگي خفيف، متوسط و شديد هستند.
وي همچنين خاطرنشان كرد: 5/10 درصد مصرف*كنندگان الكل داراي افسردگي خفيف، 5/2 درصد متوسط و نيم درصد داراي افسردگي شديد بوده و بيشترين درجه افسردگي در ميان مصرف*كنندگان سيگار مشاهده شده است؛ به گونه*اي كه 22 درصد از افسردگي خفيف ، 9 درصد از افسردگي متوسط و 2 درصد از افسردگي شديد رنج مي*برند.
معاون اجتماعي وزير كشور تصريح كرد: بر اين اساس، به طور ميانگين 13 درصد جامعه آماري تحقيق داراي افسردگي خفيف ، 4 درصد افسردگي متوسط و نيم درصد افسردگي شديد دارند.

بروجردي افزود: 7/11 درصد مصرف*كنندگان سيگار داراي خانواده سيگاري و 1/8 درصد خانواده غيرسيگاري و 6/36 درصد افراد غيرسيگاري جامعه آماري تحقيق داراي خانواده سيگاري و 6/43 درصد داراي خانواده غير سيگاري هستند.
وي گفت: همچنين 5/26 درصد مصرف*كنندگان الكل داراي سابقه مصرف در خانواده و 5/49 درصد داراي سابقه مصرف در ميان فاميل بودند.
به عبارتي 5/15 درصد مصرف*كنندگان الكل و 8/10 درصد غيرالكلي*ها داراي خانواده الكلي هستند.

دبير شوراي اجتماعي كشور با اشاره به علل گرايش به مواد مذكور خاطرنشان كرد: 5/23 ، 29، 53 و 5/43 درصد مصرف*كنندگان داروهاي روانگردان ، مواد محرك، الكل و سيگار داراي خانواده متشنج هستند.
به گفته وي 9/2 درصد مصرف*كنندگان روانگردان*ها و 9/4 درصد مصرف*كنندگان مواد محرك، 8/21 درصد مصرف*كنندگان الكل و 3/19 درصد مصرف*كنندگان سيگار متاهل و بقيه مجرد هستند.

بروجردي همچنين با اشاره به اين كه حدود 70 درصد جامعه آماري اين تحقيق داراي مدرك تحصيلي متوسطه و ديپلم بوده و فوق*ديپلم و ليسانس، ابتدايي و راهنمايي و فوق*ليسانس و بالاتر و حوزي و بي*سواد به ترتيب مدارك تحصيلي بعدي را تشكيل مي*دهند، افزود: 5/82 درصد جامعه آماري تحقيق فوق داراي مشكل افسردگي نرمال، 13 درصد افسردگي خفيف، 4 درصد افسردگي متوسط و نيم درصد افسردگي شديد بوده، همچنين 24 درصد نيز از مشكل عصبي رنج مي*بردند.

معاون اجتماعي وزير كشور با اشاره به توزيع سني مصرف*كنندگان در اين تحقيق گفت: متوسط سن مصرف مواد روانگردان20، مواد محرك 21، الكل 20 و سيگار 21 سال است.

پليس و نيروهای امنيتی ايران تجمعی را که در تهران برای ابراز همبستگی با اکبر گنجی، روزنامه نگار زندانی برگزار شده بود، مورد حمله قرار داده و بر هم زده اند.
بيش از دويست نفر به دعوت فعالان سياسی، دانشجويی و فرهنگی در مقابل دانشگاه تهران گرد آمده بودند تا همبستگی خود را با آقای گنجی، مشهورترين زندانی ايرانی که بيش از يک ماه است در اعتصاب غذا به سر می برد، نشان دهند و خواهان آزادی او شوند.
