Xbox 360 sells out within hours

The Xbox 360 has virtually sold out in the UK as gamers rushed to snap up Microsoft's next generation games console, say retailers.

Dedicated fans queued overnight or in the early hours of the morning in the light of limited stocks.

Hundreds of Xbox 360s have appeared on the online auction site eBay, selling for more than double the retail price.

The limited stock has led retailers and gamers to criticise Microsoft for not supplying enough machines.

    Midnight wait

In the UK, more than 200 gamers have queued for hours in the rain for the midnight launch of the console at Game's flagship store in London's Oxford Street

      Gmail Gains 'Web Clips' Feature

Google is adding a new feature to its Gmail Web mail service that lets users display links to various types of Web content, such as news articles and blog entries.

Gmail users can customize the new Web Clips feature so that it displays links from Really Simple Syndication (RSS) or Atom syndication feeds or to news articles about specific topics, for example. Web Clips items appear along the top of the Gmail screen.

"Each clip displays the source from which it was received, how long ago the clip was published, and a link to access the entire story or page containing the clip," according to an explanation of the new feature posted in Gmail's help section.

Last week, Yahoo integrated an RSS reader into the new version of its Yahoo Mail Web Web mail service, which is still in beta and not generally available yet.

MIAMI-- Yahoo today said it has acquired Del.icio.us, a New York-based startup that is considered a pioneer in social bookmarking, a type of online service that lets users save, annotate, and tag their favorite Web pages and share their lists with other users.

Both Yahoo and Del.icio.us separately announced the deal today via postings on official blogs. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Together we'll continue to improve how people discover, remember and share on the Internet, with a big emphasis on the power of community," Del.icio.us founder and Chief Executive Officer Joshua Schachter wrote in his company's official blog.

Google shares have hit record highs on reports it could take a stake in Time Warner's internet unit, AOL.
Under the deal, Google would pay $1bn (£565m) for a 5% stake in AOL, the Wall Street Journal website has reported. The two firms have declined to comment.

Time Warner has been seeking a partner to boost AOL's value, which would in turn lift the US media giant's shares.

Any deal between the two sides would freeze out Microsoft, once considered the front-runner for a deal with AOL.

Yahoo had also been in talks with Time Warner but dropped out in November, reportedly because the media giant wanted to retain a majority stake in AOL.

Shares in Google surged more than 7% to highs of $435.20 as reports of the talks emerged

              Microsoft's vision of the future

Everyone has a different idea of what fun gadgets they would like to see in the future, and some of Microsoft's researchers have been demonstrating in Brussels what they hope might take off.

Those familiar with the Harry Potter books and films might recognise the first idea - called the Whereabouts Clock.

It shows you where people are, and its inventor Abigail Sellen thinks its best use is in the home.

She said: "We noticed in our studies of family life that it was important to know - when you come home from work for example - are my kids still at school, have they left school yet, has my husband left work yet, shall I get the dinner on? This kind of thing. Actually knowing where your family is very important to family life."

This is more a new concept than a new technology, and the real version may still be a year or two away.

It would track the mobile phone signals of loved ones, then cross-reference which mobile cell they were in with pre-programmed locations, like the home, school, or workplace.

BERLIN - A child porn offender in Germany turned himself in to the police after mistaking an email he received from a computer worm for an official warning that he was under investigation, authorities said on Tuesday.

"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive," said a spokesman for police in the western city of Paderborn. "Here it helped us to uncover a crime which would otherwise probably have gone undetected."

The 20-year-old was caught out by a version of the "Sober" worm, a prolific Internet virus which can invade computers and then send out messages from a host of fabricated addresses.

The trap was set when the man got an email saying "an investigation is underway," that listed the sender as Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Police charged him after finding pornographic images of children on his home computer.

Future is bright for Internet ads: surveys

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - 'Tis the season for adjusting online expectations and reviewing what has been hot on the Internet.

JMP Securities on Tuesday raised its global advertising forecast for not only this year but for next year and beyond. The firm now expects the global online ad market to grow at a 25% clip annually for the next five years, up from a previous forecast in the low 20% range.

In the next year the Wall Street firm expects the online ad market to grow to $26.4 billion worldwide and to $33.2 billion in 2007.

Forrester Research, meanwhile, said that those who have the Internet are spending more than 30% of their media time nowadays online, a metric that prompted JMP to increase its market share expectations for Internet advertising in the U.S.

                      Google Creates Spinoff

Google will create a limited liability company that will own the $1 billion 5 percent equity interest the search engine giant will acquire in Time Warner's America Online subsidiary.

Moreover, as of July 1, 2008, this new company, which Google calls HoldCo, will be able to register for an initial public offering (IPO), according to a document Google filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week.

"If we exercise this right, Time Warner will have the right to purchase our interests for cash or shares of Time Warner stock based on an appraised fair market value of our equity interest in HoldCo in lieu of conducting an initial public offering," the document reads.
