Arash Tops European Pop Charts With Persian-Language Hits .

He sings in Persian and has had number-one hits in Sweden, Russia, Belgium, Spain, and other European countries. His name is Arash. The Iranian-born singer has received a number of music awards for his hit tune "Boro Boro" -- Persian for "Go away." Arash was recently in Prague and spoke to RFE/RL about his against-the-odds success.


Prague, 21 April 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Some people might have had doubts that a Persian-language song could succeed on the European music scene -- including Arash himself.

But "Boro Boro" topped the music charts just weeks after its release in Sweden, and quickly became an international hit.

Arash, a clean-cut 27-year-old with a fondness for hats and a talent for energetic stage performances, has become an overnight sensation with "Boro Boro," the first single on his debut album, "Arash Arash."
He says he chooses to sing in his native language because of his deep attachment to Iran and Persian culture. But he says he deliberately writes lyrics that are easy to pronounce, so that people can sing along regardless of whether they speak Persian.

The singer says he uses his songs to share personal experiences. "Boro Boro," for example, is about a former girlfriend.

"Regarding my song 'Boro Boro,' my first girlfriend hurt me a bit, and I said I'll sing a song to get back at her. I sing: 'Go away, my heart doesn't want you anymore. I don't want to see you anymore,'" Arash said.

It's a formula that works. Yesterday, Arash was in Moscow to receive a prize during the MTV Dance Music Awards. Tomorrow, he will be in Warsaw where "Boro Boro" will again be recognized in the Radio Eska Awards.

Arash, who writes and produces his songs himself, mixes Indian and European beats with traditional Iranian music. He says his goal in writing music is to help people forget about their problems and have a good time.

“I make music with all my heart to make everybody happy. That’s the most important thing for me. My most important mission is to bring happiness, and when I see people jumping up and down and being happy, I become ten times more happy myself,” he said.

Arash and his family left Iran in the late 1980s. But he has returned to Iran several times in recent years and says his best memories from the country are of the soccer games he played as a child in Tehran, and of family trips to the Caspian region:

“We always returned home from the football games with a bloody nose and a hurt foot. And I also really liked the north [of Iran]. We used to go to the north every summer and we really had a great time. These are memories I will never forget,” he said.

Arash has a following among young Iranians, who buy black-market CDs or listen to his songs on radio programs broadcast from outside the country. Iranian officials in recent years have started to tolerate pop music, but there is little chance Arash will receive permission to perform in the country anytime soon. The singer, however, remains hopeful.

“Sure, I’ve thought about [performing in Iran]. And one day I will go to Iran to have a concert there," he said. "I’ve just started my work, I came to the music scene only six or seven months ago. Right now I'm doing my best to make my work more successful, and then we will see what can be done about those problems.”

The success of "Boro Boro" has taken Arash to many different parts of the globe, including Central Asia, where he performed in Kazakhstan earlier this month. He said he hopes to return to the region -- and especially to Tajikistan, where he has many young fans.

Arash plans to begin a new album after the summer, and says he wants to surprise his fans by bringing a fresh touch to his already successful formula.

آرش وفيلم هندی

يک ماه پيش آرش رفت بمبئی که در فيلم "خدای کلک" ( Bluff Master ) بازی کنه. آرش در يک صحنه از فيلم آهنگ "برو برو" رو در يک رستورانی اجرا می کنه و هنرپيشه اصلی فيلم، پسر آميتا باچان دست تو گردنش می ندازه و می زنه زير آواز و رقص.

آرش درباره بازی در اين فيلم می گه: "نمی دونين چند تا آدم پشت صحنه بودن. چقدر هم وقت صرف يک صحنه می کنن! صحنه من ۱۵ ساعت طول کشيد و اينقدر آدم دور و بر اين فيلم کار می کردن که من تا آخر فيلم قيافه های جديد ديدم. اونجا هم متوجه شدم که اسم يکی از هنرپيشه های معروفشون بهمن ايرانی بود، بعد فهميدم که از پارسی های هنده."

آرش چند روز بيشتر هندوستان نموند ولی تلخ و شيرين روزگار رو کشيد. "غذای هندی عالی بود ولی ديدن فقر تو اين شهر اشتهای آدم رو کور می کرد. در بعضی مناطق بمبئی بعضی ها بودن که حتی لباس نداشتن!"

آرش و وسوسه مالزی

آهنگ "وسوسه" (Temptation) آرش با ويديوی جديدش بيرون آمده. البته ناگفته نماند که اين آهنگ در آلبوم "آرش آرش" هست ولی با ساخته شدن ويديوش دوباره آرش و آلبوم و آهنگش زبونزد مردم می شه. بيرون آمدن اين تک آهنگ دوباره صدای آرش رو در راديوهای سوئد بلند کرده.

وسوسه، که اجرای متفاوتی از يکی از آهنگهای معروف گروه آلابيناست تونسته که در جدول آهنگهايی که راديوهای سوئد پخش می کنن (جدول air chart) سوم بشه.

آرش: اين موفقيت بزرگيه. چون آهنگ "برو برو" با اينکه پرفروشترين آهنگ بود ولی در جدول "پخش راديوها" يا همون air chart سيزدهم شده بود.

آرش اين آهنگ رو با ربکا (Rebecca) دوصدايی اجرا کردن.

برای ضبط موزيک ويديوش يا به قول بعضی ها "کليپ" سه روزی رفتن کوالالامپور در مالزی. روزی ۱۷ ساعت فيلمبرداری داشتن و در بين ۴۰ نفر خدمه و فيلمبردار و رقصنده، دوتا دختر ايرانی هم بودن.

آرش: رقصيدن و لبخند زدن تو دوربين زيرآفتاب داغ ۴۰ درجه زندگيمو سياه کرد. بخصوص که دائما بايد با يک دوچرخه مخصوص، که حالت خوابيده پا می زنی توی جاده می رفتم و می خوندم. پوستم کنده شد. صبحها ساعت ۵ بيدار می شديم تا لباسهامو اتو کنن و بعد ازگريم ساعت می شد هفت. فيلمبرداری شروع می شد تا ساعت ۱۲ شب.

چرا انقدر دير؟

چون من روی آلبوم هام خيلی کار می کنم و کار ساخت اونها خيلی طول ميکشه. مثلاً من برای آلبومی که ۱۲ تا آهنگ توش دارم، ۲۵ تا آهنگ درست می کنم و از اونها انتخاب می کنم. مثلاً از آلبوم قبلی من ۱۰ تا آهنگ اضافه مونده

بازیهای جام جهانی شروع شده و آرش، یکی از اولینهایی که آهنگ ساخت، در بازی فوتبال ایران و پرتغال در فضای بیرونی استادیوم، به روی صحنه می ره.

آرش : اول باید بگم که اصلا مهم نیست که کدام آهنگ به عنوان آهنگ اصلی انتخاب میشه، به نظر من هر چی بیشترآهنگ در حمایت تیم ملی ساخته بشه بهتره.

خبر اینکه قراره برنامه اجرا کنم، خیلی دیربه من رسید ( چهارشنبه فهمیدم) ، الان سوئد هستم و تا فردا خودم رو می رسونم آلمان . یکی از رادیوهای ملی آلمان به اسم HR3 از من دعوت کرده که در فضای بیرون استادیوم روی صحنه اصلی بهمراه تعدادی از خوانندههای معروف بین المللی، برنامه اجرا کنم.

کدام آهنگها را اجرا میکنی؟

آرش : چهار پنج تایی را می خونم و تا کنسرتمو تموم کنم، فکر کنم دیگه بازی شروع شده. فوری از روی صحنه می رم بین مردم تا تیم ملی رو تشویق کنم.

پس مراقب باش که حواس تماشاچیهای ایرانی را پرت نکنی!

آرش : ما همه برای ایران دست می زنیم و همه حواسمون به تیم ایران خواهد بود

آرش چطوری؟

ممنون. ( توام با خنده و بزنم به چوب دندونهای ردیف و سفید)

قبل از بازی فوتبال ایران و پرتقال، کنار رودخانه "ماین" رفتی و روی صحنه برنامه اجرا کردی. چطور بود؟

خیلی باحال بود. این برنامه از طرف بزرگترین رادیوی فرانکفورت برگزار شده بود که برای مسابقه های مختلفی که در فرانکفورت انجام می شد خواننده های مختلفی رو دعوت کرده بودن.
اونجا روی صحنه قرار بود که انگلیسی حرف بزنم چونکه برنامه داشت برای شنونده های آلمانی و خارجی پخش می شد. من ایرانی های جلوی صحنه رو که دیدم، دیگه احساستی شدم و دیگه فقط پای بلندگو فارسی حرف زدم.

پس این برنامه ازرادیو هم پخش می شد؟

بله. زنده از رادیو پخش می شد.خیلی برنامه جالبی بود.

آرش شب مسابقه یک کار جالب هم کرد . وقتی ابی داشت کنسرت می داد و آهنگ " بگو ای یار بگو " رو می خوند، آرش پرید روی صحنه و باهاش همآواز شد.

امشب دیدم که دوست خوبم ابی اینجا برنامه داشت و تصمیم گرفتم آهنگ "بگو ای یار بگو" رو با هم روی صحنه اجرا کنیم. خیلی جو خوبی بود. مخصوصا که دیگه خیالم خیلی راحت بود چون ارکستر و صدا برداری ها شده بود و من دیگه لازم نبود مثل کنسرتهای خودم هی نگران صدا باشم. خیلی خوب اجرا شد. مردم همه آهنگ رو با من و ابی همصدا شدن.

آرش رقص مخصوصش رو روی صحنه انجام داد و با اینکه صحنه ارتفاعش زیاد بود چند بار نزدیک بود بکشنش پائین. آرش تا ز گی آلبوم REMIX هاش رو بیرون داده که "پیام" remixهاش حرف نداره. ولی هنوز خبری از آلبوم جدیدش نیست!
آلبوم جدیدت قراره کی بیرون بیاد؟

آلبوم جدیدم تقریباً یک سال دیگه بیرون میاد. آلبوم قبلی من توی خیلی از کشورها تازه داره وارد بازار میشه. مثل انگلستان و آمریکا. به خاطر همین بیرون اومدن آلبوم بعدی یه مقدار بیشتر طول میکشه. ولی قول میدم یه آلبوم توپی بیرون میدم که همه حال بکنن.

راستی وقتی که قبل از مسابقه ایران و پرتغال کنار رودخانه ماین روی صحنه بودی، و برای ایرانی ها می خوندی، چه آرزوهائی داشتی که به باد رفت؟

حس خیلی خوبی بود. چون قبل از بازی بود و بعد از باختن نبود! اتفاقاً بعداً با ابی رفتیم بازی رو دیدم و کلی با هم حرص خوردیم! ولی کلاً دم بچه ها گرم.

شنبه ۹ سپتامبر / ۱۸ شهريور آرش وارد تاجيکستان شد تا کنسرتهائی رو بمناسبت جشن استقلال اين کشور برگزار کنه. چند ماه پيش که با آرش حرف زدم می گفت آرزوشه که تاجيکستان رو ببينه و تا لب مرزش هم روسيه کنسرت داده
با اينکه مديريت سوئدی آرش اصلاً علاقه ای به برگزاری کنسرت درتاجيکستان نشون نمی داد، سه هقته قبل گروه آريان ميديا در تاجيکستان باهاشون به توافق رسيد که کنسرت آرش رو در شهر دوشنبه و کولاب برگزار کنن. ( به دفاع از خود آرش بايد بگم که کار کنسرت و اينجور چيزا فقط بعهده آقای هنريک مدير آرشه و خود آرش دخالت نداره

تاجيکها هم مثل ما ايرانی ها در آخرين لحظه چيزها رو تغيير می دن و مسئله ای هم پيش نمياد! ولی وقتی که گروه از سوئد ميره تاجيکستان، مسئله فرق می کنه. شنبه که آرش می رسه فرودگاه دوشنبه می فهمه که بجای اجرا در کاخ رئيس جمهوری ( که گويا احتياج به گروه نداره) بايد بره استاديوم ورزشی شهر دوشنبه و برای بيست هزار نفر بخونه! اين مژده آرش رو شوکه کرد چون اصلا چنين قراری نبود.

آرش همراه سوت و تشويق تماشاچيان در استاديوم پای ميکروفن می گه: ببخشيد من گروهم هنوز نرسيده .فردا ظهر بياين همينجا.

آرش: مردم بحدی سوت می زدن که انگار تيم فوتبالشون گل زده. همه اين صحنه ها رو در فيلم مستندی که فيلمبردار تاجيک "اسکندر" درست کرده، می تونين ببينين.

مردم هم که ساعتها زير آفتاب جا گرفته بودن شديدا بهشون بر می خوره و وقتی که استاديوم رو ترک می کنن، چندين اتوبوس و ماشين رو درب و داغون می کنن. اونجا شلوغ می شه و مردم با شکستن در و پنجره نارضايتيشونو نشون ميدن. با دخالت پليس جمعيت مهار شده. گفته می شه که حداقل سه نفر زخمی شدن.

آرش: راه طولانی ای بود و پر از دامه و جاده های ناهموار. ولی منظره های بسيار زيبائی رو ديدم . دوستهای سوئديم هاج و واج مونده بودن. به کولاب که رسيديم ديديم که صحنه آماده نيست و کنسرت با تاخير شروع شد.

آرش: اين استقبال و مهمون نوازی رو به عمرم نديده بودم و واقعا از تاجيکها متشکرم. خيلی با من مهربون وخاکی بودن. هر جا که رفتم خيابونها رو می بستن و عجيب نگران امنيت من و گروهم بودن.

به همه بچه های گروه خوش گذشت. مديرم " هنريک " حاج و واج مونده بود و باورش نمی شد. اينبار مادرم نتونست بياد . من فقط يک سفر خيلی کوتاه به تاجيکستان داشم و خيلی سريع همه چيز جور شد و فرصت نشد برنامه خانواده گی ای رو تنظيم کنم.

اين گروه رقص از معروفترين گروههای رقص تاجيکستانه . توو ويديوهای صدرالدين که ممکنه روی ماهواره ديده باشين می رقصن . توو فيلم " سکس و فلسفه " مخلمباف بازی کردن ( که در تاجيکستان به اسم عشق و فلسفه معروف شده) و گروهی بودن که در اولين کنسرت زن در افغانستان بعد از طالبان ( سال پيش ) با منيژه خواننده تاجيک رفتن کابل ولی بهشون اجازه رقص داده نشد!

خيلی ها ويديوی جديد "چوری چوری" آرش با خواننده هندی آنيلا (که در آلبوم خودش در آهنگ بمبئی دريمز آواز خونده ) رو ديدن. اين ويديو که در کشور اسلواکی ساخته شده، ويديوی بسيار پرخرجی بوده و در ايستگاه قطار شهر" پوپرات" فيلمبرداری شده. همون کارگردانی که ويديوی آهنگ " آرش " رو ساخته اين ويديو رو کارگردانی کرده.

آرش: من و آنيلا برای حرکات کاراته اين ويديو يه دو، سه هفته ای کلاس کاراته رفتيم .

ولی خوب بعضی از بزن بزنها رو هم بدلم تو ويديو انجام می ده. تمام ميز و صندلی ايستگاه قطار و ماشينهای تو ويديو واقعآ داغون شده، بوده و مجبور شديم کلی خسارت بديم.

خرج اين ويديو به چند صد هزار دلار رسيده. آرش آلبوم جديد آنيلا رو براش ضبط کرده. در حال حاضر هم داره روی آلبوم خودش کار می کنه و تا تابستان سال بعد ضبط آلبوم طول می کشه. اما بدون شک تا اون موقع تک آهنگها و ويديوهای جديدی از آرش پخش خواهد شد.

About Arash


Arash is one of Sweden's most famous artists. He has also had a great deal of success in other countries, topping the charts of all kinds of hit lists. Within a year's time he has released such singles as 'Boro Boro', 'Tike Tike Kardi', 'Temptation', etc. As an artist he has toured around the world and sold gold and platinum records in many of those countries. His most recent victory was in Cannes when he was awarded Sweden's most successful debut artist 2005. So much has happened to Arash within a short period of time, but who is he as a person and how has he reached the top level as artist?


Approximately twenty-nine years ago a little boy was born in the Capital of Iran, Tehran. He was named after a legendary hero, who was said to have saved many lives once upon a time. However, Arash, our little hero had plans of his own.

Arash's love for music developed at a very early age. On his 9th birthday, he received an electric piano from his father, which is still in his home being played once in a while.

By this time Arash's fascination with music had peaked even more, he began writing his own songs and taking piano lessons throughout junior high school. When he had reached the tenth grade he had already formed a band with a few of his closest friends. Being as gifted as our hero is, Arash quickly became the mastermind behind their songs, making music what it should be- harmonious.

It did not take Arash more than a week after his graduation when he decided he needed to follow his heart and passion. He placed forth his time and energy into becoming an extremely talented producer and lyricist. He had spent so many of his childhood-years in music studios that he felt at home there, others would constantly look to him for answers. To date, he has written numerous hit songs for many international artists, whom we all know of.

The 22nd of September 2004, the first single was released. No one could have ever thought that it would be the amazing summer hit as it became. Arash's first single had shot to the number one spot on almost every chart in Sweden. Soon this would spread to the rest of Europe, making Arash an international artist over night. The single was called 'Boro Boro' which in the Farsi language means 'Go away'. By now his name was known throughout most of Europe as 'Arash Boro Boro'

The first single was followed by the hit singles “Tike Tike Kardi” and “Temptation”. Arash´s debut album was realised all over Europe the same year.

Even though he has a large fan base in Sweden, he is more famous in other countries such as; Russia, USA, Canada, the Ukraine, Iran, Turkey, etc. He was honoured with selling gold and platinum in some of those countries. Many say that in a way, Arash has made history. He is the first Persian artist to write, sing, produce a song all in Farsi and have it known all over the world.

Since then Arash's album can be purchased all over the world, he's toured the world (over thirty different countries), performed live for over 50 000 fans, performed in Germany during the 2006 Premiere League World Cup, as well as on TV shows with millions of viewers. January 2006 at the MIDEM (International Music Market) in Cannes was the highlight of it all. Arash was presented with the award for artist who has sold more within EU than the country he resides in. He was honoured not only with the award but with knowing that many enjoyed his songs and appreciated his hard work and love for music.

This type of success and fame within such a short amount of time is very unusual given the circumstances. Most people would be satisfied, but someone as ambitious as our hero will go further and develop himself to the next level. When asked how he feels about the situation and where his life is right now, he responds 'It all feels surreal and I'm blessed, almost like a dream but my plans are still in the making.”

So our hero is predicted a famous future and nobody knows how far up in the sky it will end.

Perhaps one of the only Iranian singers who has been able to cross over to “the other side”, Arash is a young, energetic and well-known artist that has taken the world by storm with his music. Since his debut on 2004, when his first song hit the charts, Arash has had a string of successes in his native Sweden and worldwide. Perhaps his most famous song is 'Boro Boro', which was then followed by the hit singles “Temptation”, 'Arash' and “Tike Tike Kardi”.

Arash has won many awards, including two grammy’s in Russia as well as the Midem awards for the artist who has sold more within the EU than the country he resides in.

Arash has recently started a tour with the debut of his new album “Temptation”. We had a chance to ask him a few questions.


Arash Labaf: I grew up in Teheran until I was 9 and then we moved to Sweden. It was really hard to fit in, in the beginning but I made it, some how. I studied at the same time I made my music. I have always loved music and will always do. I started first as a song writer and producer. I made music for other musicians, but one day I decided to start my own career as a singer.



SR: Tell us about your first hit song and what that felt like for you.



AL: BORO BORO. The song is written about my ex-girlfriend. The feeling to have a world wide hit is not easy to explain. I have Persian fans everywhere. And I’ve had a couple of number one hit songs in Sweden so my fan base is pretty big here and so is the rest of Europe. To be Persian in Sweden has been a hard road for me, but life is always full of surprises.

SR: What is your hope for Iran’s youth today?



AL: Freedom, education and wealth.



SR: Where do you find inspiration?



AL: In people, airplanes, books, my own life and lots of other things.

SR: Tell us about what you are working on now and what is next.



AL: I am almost done with my new album. I am going on a world tour and you can check out the dates and locations on my website. I have also been collaborating with some very famous artist which I will tell you about very soon.
