Madonna, Barbara, Celine, Judy, Omul, Googoosh Whomever you call the best does not matter. Iran's single most successful super star is Googoosh. Today, she consistently outsells all other Iranian popstars by a factor of 10. She is the quintessential Diva and sets the standard by which all others follow.

Her style, grace, fire and passion for her craft leave no doubt as to her greatness and countless millions from around the world follow her every move with an enthusiasm and following that is timeless and endless.

Googoosh was born Faegheh Atashin in 1951 on Sarcheshmeh Street, in an old and worn down part of Tehran, to Azerbaijani immigrant parents from the former Soviet Union. When she was two, they separated. Because of her father's profession - he was an acrobat and an entertainer - she grew accustomed to the stage early on, and was part of his act until she was three. She began doing impersonations of some of the singers of the time. When her father discovered this talent, he put her on stage. She has been on stage as a paid professional since she was three.

Googoosh had one brother who, at the age of 24, was struck by heart rheumatism and passed away. She has three half-brothers on her father's side and a brother and sister on her mother's side.

Because Googooosh's mother was separated from her father when Googoosh was young, Googoosh never got a chance to live with her. Her mother later remarried and as a result, Googoosh didn't see her again until she was 13. For a while she was even told that her mother had passed away - so that she wouldn't ask for her on the road.

Because Googoosh lived with her stepmother, she didn't have a very good home life. But she was occupied with school and performances, and was kept busy with household chores. She was also in charge of one of her brothers.

The name "Googoosh" is an Armenian name but for a boy and was given to her at birth. But because it was a boy's name there was a problem registering the name on her birth certificate. As a result, her registered name is Faegheh.

During the 1970's Googoosh began a meteoric rise to fame and success as she drove the edge of Iranian pop music further and further. Known for her flamboyant outfits, and fashion sense, Googoosh wowed her pop culture hungry fans in Iran and abroad with her trademark hairdos and hip-elegant style. Iranian women changed hairdos with Googoosh and she was always one step ahead of them with a new look.

Googoosh's private life was not quite so successful and a series of bad marriages and abusive relationships followed. She has one son Kambiz who is also in the music industry in Los Angeles.

After the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, Googoosh had been forbidden from performing and her material had been banned. She kept herself occupied at home, taking care of her house, reading. Because she had no intentions of leaving Iran, she adapted to her new life. Many people would tell her that other Iranian singers who began their careers much later in life than she did were choosing to leave because they could not endure not being able to perform. They would ask how it was that she, who had always been on stage, managed to adapt.

For a time Googoosh battled depression until the early 1990s when she met Massoud Kimiai (now her husband). He saw her sadness, and later told her that it was as if the flower of her soul had withered. On their first date he took her to a private recording studio in Tehran and after years of silence she put on her headphones, and started to sing for the first time in years. This had an overwhelming effect on her and gradually an energy quickly spread within her. Now drawing from the love she received from people since the end of the Iran-Iraq war, tt was this support which brought her out of her depression.

In 1999 rumors spread to Iran that a following had grown outside of Iran and the many ex-patriate Iranians who had left Iran during the revolution yearned for Googoosh to perform again. It was under this encouragement and the opportunity presented by an Iranian concert promoter that enabled Googoosh to leave Iran in 2000 and start a concert tour that spanned the globe.

Today Googoosh is based in Toronto Canada where she continues to work on her music career as well as independent films. Googoosh still tours regularly and her concerts are sold out events throughout the Iranian and non-Iranian communities wherever she goes.

شهرام شب پره بعد از سالها در روز یکشنبه 24 ماه july در شهر فرشتگان کنسرتی به همراه گروه black cats برگزار کرد.در این کنسرت به دعوت شهرام شب پره ، گوگوش عزیز به همراه کامبیز و همسرش و همچنین مهرداد آسمانی به همراه خانواده و تعداد دیگری از هنرمندان از جمله مارتیک ، ابی ، لیلا فروهر ، اندی و ... و همچنین عده ای از صا حبان رسانه ها از جمله مدیر شبکه تپش علیرضا امیر قاسمی حضور یافتند .

در این کنسرت، گوگوش عزیز هنگام اجرای برنا مه شهرام وارد می شود و شهرام حضور گوگوش عزیز را اعلام می کند و از اینکه گوگوش دعوتش را پذیرفته تشکر می کند. این خبر با تشویق مردم رو به رو می شود ولی هنگامی که شهرام بار دیگر از گوگوش نام می برد ، گوگوش عزیز بلند می شود و می ایستد و این بار سالن کنسرت با تشویق شدید مردم به لرزه در می آید وسالن دقایقی لبریز از هیاهو می شود .

Googoosh is not just a phenomenal musical talent. She is also an accomplished actress and has been sought by many Iranian and non-Iranian filmakers alike for leading roles in their films.

She began acting in movies as a child and has starred in some of Iran's most successful as well as controversial films.

Some of her most memoralble and romantic films have been made with good friend and superstar veteran Iranian (and international) actor Behrouz Vossoughi, and the screen never sizzled hotter than when these two got together. Like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, their onscreen romances, fights and all around chemistry sparked many rumors about a real relationship offscreen. Each denies it. Hmmm? The forum was packed!

She looked stunning. Her performance was magnificent.She had a very bad cold but said it was not important because "you are all here", and the crowd responded with loud cheers and applause.

She not only looked absolutely gorgeous, but she looked very happy which was wonderful to see. She looked like a child in a candy store - excited, relishing the joy of performance.

She sang her old songs, a few from the Akharin Khabar album, and a few from Manifest. All beautifully sung,with that powerful voice which broke a couple of times during her performance.

At the end she acknowledged Mehrdad's standing by her for the past two years and that without him this night would not have been possible. Then she asked him to sing with her for 3 songs. He got on stage, the band played, he was so overwhelmed he could not sing for a few minutes. The crowd cheered for him.

The concert ended with Googoosh and Mehrdad and Albert holding the Iranian flag and the whole audience singing the National song with them.

ما مائیم و گوگوش هم یکی از ما هاست. یا شاید هم صدا و فریاد ماست. فریادی نهفته در درون که ما جرات گفتن و سرودن و خواندنش را نداریم ولی او می خواند. می خواند.
ما گوگوش را دوست می داریم. یعنی نواهایش را دوست می داریم. می توانیم ساعت ها در بزرگ راه های درندشت آمریکا یا در خلوت کوچه پس کوچه های سراب و اردبیل یا حتی زندان های نمور و تاریک دل به آوازش خوش کنیم. بشنویم و گوش دهیم و تماشا کنیم عمر رفته را یا آنات هنوز را که در گذرند و می گذرند و دگر باز نمی آیند…..

از گوگوش نوشتن البته خیلی هم ساده نیست. همین پریروز آقایی مرا تهدید کرده بود که “دیگر کاسهء صبرش لبریز شده” و گوگوش و موگوش و غوغوش و احمد احرار بهروز وثوقی و مایکل جکسون سرش نمی شود. تهدیدم کرده بود که مرا فلان و بهمان می کند. نخست گمان کردم که شاید از بچه های مثلا فلان “آقا” و بهمان “ماقا” باشند. ما را باش! این ع. د. از همین بیخ گوش ما لوس آنجلس ما را تهدید کرده بود. پرس و جو که کردم دیدم از “گوگوش ستیزان” معروف شهر است و تلفن تهدید آمیزش هم به سبب مقاله ای بود که چهار سال پیش یا پیش تر در روزگارنو پاریس (به سردبیری اسماعیل پوروالی، یادش به خیر!) و کیهان لندن نوشته بودم. به نام: اسطوره یا معمای گوگوش” آخر گوگوش قرار بود پس از بیست و اندی سال بخواند و من هم مطلب مفصلی نوشته بودم…. تهدید این ع . د (عین دال) به کنار، باید اعتراف کنم که آن مطلب خیلی هم بد یمن نبود! در پاریس که بودم دکتر مصباح زاده مرا به یک ناهار حسابی دعوت کرد و گفت به خاطر همان مطلب بهترین شراب را انتخاب کنم و من هم یک بطر شاتو مارگوی 95 سفارش دادم که هنوز مزه اش زیر زبانم است!
…..
امشب هم کنسرت گوگوش بود در سانفرانسیسکو. اما ضایع! ارزان ترین بلیط 40 دلاری بود و گران ترین بلیط گویا 300 دلاری. برنامه قرار بود ساعت 8 شروع بشود که دیدیم بر سر در “کنسرت سرا” نوشته اند هشت و نیم و البته ساعت نه شروع شد با آقای مهرداد آسمانی. مهرداد البته صدای گرم و خوشی دارد و من نخستین بار صدایش را در خانهء صادق چوبک شنیدم. آوازی بود به نام “چادر ننداز سرت!” که چوبک سخت دوستش داشت. اما امشب که دیدم غیر از دو سه ترانه در همان مایه ها – که سخت زیبا و گیرا بود (اکوی وحشتناک و صدای سالن به کنار)- مهرداد دیگر آن مهرداد چوبک پسند نبود. شده بود مجلس گرم کن خانم گوگوش. تا گوگوش بیاید و بخواند مهرداد سه چهار هزار تماشاچی را سرگرم کرد و مردم هم او را انگار تحمل می کردند تا گوگوش بیاید. ضایع بود دیگر! آن هم برای مهردادی که چوبک دوستش می داشت و من هم کیو کیو بنگ بنگ اش را بارها شنیده ام و دوستش دارم. دلم می خواهد برای مهرداد تمام بلیط های اپرا وارکستر سمفونیک سانفرانسیسکو را بفرستم. آنی دارد این مرد! اما فعلا من شرمنده ام!
گوگوش که پس از تنفس بیست دقیقه ای آمد سالن سرشار از شور و هیجان شد. خب دیگر، گوگوش بود. گوگوش با همان حرکات زیبای دست و اندام که منحصر به فرد است و گمان نمی کنم کسی – دست کم در میان ایرانیان- مانند گوگوش حرکات دست را بفهمد! روی سن آمد و با کلمات شهیار قنبری قلب ها را تسخیر کرد. آخر گوگوش بود دیگر! اما اکوی وحشتناک که در سالن می پیچید و صدای گوگوش را تحت الشعاع قرار می داد، ضایع می کرد صدای زنگین و زیبای گوگوش را. و اتفاقا گوگوش پیش تر از همه این را فهمید و بارها لب به شکایت گشود! این را می گویند یک اهل فن حرفه ای

حالا ساعت دو نیمه شب است و من خسته. اما یک کار مهرداد و گوگوش جای تحسین دارد: گوگوش بار اول که سانفرانسیسکو آمد از مرگ شاملو گفت و اعلان یک دقیقه سکوت. امشب هم، هم مهرداد و هم گوگوش از مرگ نعمت آغاسی سخن گفتند. ایوالله! دمشان گرم

Let me be up-front about this: I am not a Googoosh fan. The plaintive wail, the disco tempo. Her charms may be many, her fans legion, but over the years I’ve remained stubbornly uncharmed. It is true that when I read in the newspaper some years ago that she was staging a comeback in the States, I paused for a moment and said out loud to nobody but myself, “Well, that’s interesting.” It was a reaction not unlike the one I had a few months ago when learning that a new planet had been discovered. Interesting, yes, but just too remote for me to really care about it.

So who can explain the late night impulse that recently drove me to punch in my credit card information, courting untold perils of fraud, in order to purchase one of her old CDs online? Wouldn’t it have been more prudent to have waited until the next morning, when I could have calmly pulled one of her CDs from the music shelf of my local Iranian grocery?

She’d seduced me at last, our siren of song. I had to have her. She arrived last night. I have been with her ever since.

Actually, Googoosh and I go back. Not all the way back to the seventies -- I unripe for seduction back then -- but to the nineties, when I was in love with a man who was in love with her. Like me, he was too young to remember her from Iran, but he remembered her from his mother, who had played her records constantly when he was growing up in America. She listened to Googoosh when she canned plums and when she chopped sabzi and when she sat on the sofa and did nothing but stare into space. In the afternoons he’d sit at the kitchen table, his books and notebooks spread out in front of him, and from time to time he would look up at his mother. She would be lost to the voice of her own longing, and he took in that longing like, well, milk from his mother’s breast.

One day not long into our affair he handed me a cassette. A home-made job bearing his scribble. “Googoosh,” it read. No title, just her name. “You’ve got to listen to this,” he said softly. My interest in Persian music at the time extended as far back historically as the Black Cats. I was about to shrug off the offering, but then I caught the tender want in his eyes. I must have mixed it up with his want for me because as soon as I left him that day I popped “Googoosh” into my tape deck.

It was sunset, which I know because that was when I used to leave his place every day to go back to my parents’ house. My hair was in tangles from the afternoon tryst. I was tugging at it, prying loose its knots as I drove down Pacific Coast Highway, and then suddenly I pulled over to the side of the road because all I wanted to do was listen to this music he had given me. Her voice mixed with the scent of the sea and the memory of that afternoon, and I was sure I’d never heard such lovely music. Even the pain and yearning of it made the pleasure last that much longer.

When he broke up with me later that summer, I threw out that tape and never looked back -- at Googoosh, I mean. I went back to the Black Cats for a while, but that didn’t last too long, either. And I didn’t want to date another Iranian guy. With Iranians your heart broke in very strange places, and it always hurt more no matter who left whom. I started listening to Arabic music and Turkish music. I didn’t understand a word of it, which made it somehow easier to love... and easier to leave.

Nowadays give me Rachid Taha and I am quickly put in a state of rapture. I like my Middle Eastern music laced with irony and always at a little bit of a remove from my own past. Except, of course, when I am longing for longing -- that most Iranian of wants -- which requires that you be either deeply in love or deeply distant from it. There is no middle ground in such things. But there is a sound-track for both conditions: Googoosh.

در حدود 4800 نفر از عاشقان شاه ماهی هنر ایران ، در سالن نوکیا تیاتر در دالاس گرد هم جمع شدند تا شاهد هنرنمایی گوگوش باشند. به گفته ی مردم دالاس بیشترین جمعیت ایرانی در کنسرت ها تا کنون 1500 نفر بوده است و رکورد جمعیت در دالاس شکسته شد . این در حالی است که قیمت بلیط ها نسبتا گران بود. در قسمت 220 دلاری تعدادی جای خالی بود که به تدریج پر شد . مردم از نقاط دور حتی از نیویورک و Austin به کنسرت آمده بودند. در ابتدای برنامه گوگوش با لباس سنگدوزی طلایی و صورتی و شنل طلایی وارد سالن شد و آهنگ طلاق را اجرا کرد. پس از اجرای طلاق ، گوگوش گفت "از همکار عزیزم مهرداد که من صدای گرفتشو خیلی دوست دارم در خواست می کنم به صحنه بیاد". پس از آمدن مهرداد ، آهنگ آخرین خبر از آلبوم آخرین خبر توسط گوگوش و همچنین مهرداد اجرا شد. پس از آن گوگوش آهنگ مرهم و چند آهنگ دیگر را اجرا کرد و برای تعویض لباس رفت و مهرداد عزیز به اجرای برنامه پرداخت .

لباسهای بعدی گوگوش عبارت بودند از : یک لباس سبز و گل بهی ، تونیک سرمه ای با یراق دوزی طلایی و شلوار مخمل سیاه ، یک لباس سفید زیبا با دستکشهای سفید ، یک لباس طلایی با کلاه تگزاسی و کمربند نقره ای ، تونیک زرشکی با شلوار جین سنگ دوزی شده .

مثل کنسرتهای قبلی ، گوگوش در چند آهنگ اول کمی هیجان زده بود و این را به خوبی از صدایش می شد تشخیص داد . خود او با ظرافت خاصی گفت : اینجا از بس نمناکه که صدای آدم هم نم می کشه ! اگر کمی از کوک خارج شدم ببخشید.

در قسمت های مختلف برنامه گوگوش عزیز چندین خاطره و لطیفه ی زیبا تعریف کرد که بسیار مورد استقبال مردم قرار گرفت.

برنامه به همان سبک کنسرت لاس وگاس اجرا شد و هنگامی که گوگوش برای تعویض لباس می رفت مهرداد عزیز اجرای برنامه می کرد. کنسرت از لحاظ نور و صدا بسیار عالی بود . مردم دالاس که در سالن حضور داشتند بر این اعتقاد بودند که تا کنون در دالاس کنسرتی به این خوبی برگزار نشده است . سالن از هر لحاظ مجهز و مناسب بود و مردم از همه چبز رضایت کامل داشتند . برنامه مهرداد نیز با تشویق مردم رو به رو شد.

آهنگ های " نسل ما " ، " آخرین خبر " و "شناسنامه ی من " به صورت 2 نفره با مهرداد اجرا شد.هنگامی که گوگوش با کلاه تگزاسی و کمربند نقره ای به صحنه آمد سالن در حال انفجار بود. گوگوش گفت : " این کمربند را شهره و سعید عزیز برای من درست کردند ، کاش طلایی بود." . کامبیز اجرای برنامه تکی نداشت ولی در هنگام اجرای آهنگ "سکینه " ، مهرداد و کامبیز با دایره زنگی وارد صحنه شدند و گوگوش را همراهی کردند.

برنامه با آهنگ شناسنامه ی من و در دست گرفتن پرچم شیر و خورشید و سرود ای ایران به پایان رسید.

Legendary Iranian singer Googoosh this week capped her first tour in 22 years with a concert in Dubai. Thousands of Iranians crossed the Persian Gulf to hear the diva (who is banned from performing at home) ring in the Persian New Year last Wednesday. Although silenced by the Islamic revolution before many of them were born, even Iran's youth proclaim Googoosh as the preeminent icon of Iran's prerevolutionary social freedom. Her music has served as a unifying force amongst Iranians of all classes, both at home and in exile. TIME's Tehran correspondent Azadeh Moaveni met with Googoosh backstage and discussed the implications of her comeback for the future of Iran.

TIME: Has this Dubai show been a special experience for you? How does it feel to be on the stage again after all these years?

Googoosh: I feel like I'm singing in Iran. It has been like a rebirth for me.

Did you ever imagine this day would come, or had you psychologically moved on?

I never saw it coming. I had really felt like it was all over. I worried I wouldn't have either the chance or the ability to sing again.

When the revolution came in 1979, you were outside the country. Why did you go back?

Well, I had never left such that I wasn't planning to go back. I was only abroad because I had gone to Switzerland to pay for my son's schooling. Three months later, on a slight detour to Los Angeles, the revolution came, and everyone told me you can't return. But I hadn't taken anything with me, so despite all the pressures, and this talk of the dangers of what would happen to me if I do, I went back.

Why exactly were you denied a passport after the revolution?

Partly for financial reasons, for pre-revolutionary back taxes I allegedly owed.

What prompted your comeback tour?

It just sort of happened, came together. I started to take seriously all the offers to come back. I stayed because I wanted to come out legally, with a passport. [Her passport was approved last year by the government of President Khatami.]

Do you see yourself returning to Iran?

I can't predict the future. I think my decision would eventually be to return home, but it's hard to know what will happen to us, if we have no news of the future. One must live in the moment.

Is it a burden to be treated as the symbol of an entire nation?

It's a great honor that I only hope I can live up to. As long as it's reciprocal — I give love, as well as take it back. Until the day this is not there, I can keep going. But it does bear heavily on my shoulders. I had no practice for such a thing.

Do you have any message for Iranian young people, who still hold you so dear?

Our young people need to make every effort to secure their rights. As you know, Iranian young people have nothing, no leisure, no privacy or comfort in their lives — although I know my saying this will create difficulties for me later. They need to build their future, the country, and their own lives. They need to be the determining force in their own lives. They have to force and fight, as they are now, with all the difficulties they are currently facing. To achieve anything, people must work this hard. For me, I've put in tremendous effort these 21 years to be able to do these concerts. My life has been rife with difficulties, though I know comparatively, many may have been far worse off than me.

Many Iranian artists, particular filmmakers, have been creatively inspired by the restrictions imposed after the revolution. Have you had this experience at all?

Well, I suppose hardship itself is an experience. Whatever happens is an experience gained...

Are you optimistic about the future of the democratic trend in Iran?

That I could come out gives one hope. My singing on the stage again is a sort of hope in itself.

Let me be up-front about this: I am not a Googoosh fan. The plaintive wail, the disco tempo. Her charms may be many, her fans legion, but over the years I’ve remained stubbornly uncharmed. It is true that when I read in the newspaper some years ago that she was staging a comeback in the States, I paused for a moment and said out loud to nobody but myself, “Well, that’s interesting.” It was a reaction not unlike the one I had a few months ago when learning that a new planet had been discovered. Interesting, yes, but just too remote for me to really care about it.

So who can explain the late night impulse that recently drove me to punch in my credit card information, courting untold perils of fraud, in order to purchase one of her old CDs online? Wouldn’t it have been more prudent to have waited until the next morning, when I could have calmly pulled one of her CDs from the music shelf of my local Iranian grocery?

She’d seduced me at last, our siren of song. I had to have her. She arrived last night. I have been with her ever since.

Actually, Googoosh and I go back. Not all the way back to the seventies -- I unripe for seduction back then -- but to the nineties, when I was in love with a man who was in love with her. Like me, he was too young to remember her from Iran, but he remembered her from his mother, who had played her records constantly when he was growing up in America. She listened to Googoosh when she canned plums and when she chopped sabzi and when she sat on the sofa and did nothing but stare into space. In the afternoons he’d sit at the kitchen table, his books and notebooks spread out in front of him, and from time to time he would look up at his mother. She would be lost to the voice of her own longing, and he took in that longing like, well, milk from his mother’s breast.

One day not long into our affair he handed me a cassette. A home-made job bearing his scribble. “Googoosh,” it read. No title, just her name. “You’ve got to listen to this,” he said softly. My interest in Persian music at the time extended as far back historically as the Black Cats. I was about to shrug off the offering, but then I caught the tender want in his eyes. I must have mixed it up with his want for me because as soon as I left him that day I popped “Googoosh” into my tape deck.

It was sunset, which I know because that was when I used to leave his place every day to go back to my parents’ house. My hair was in tangles from the afternoon tryst. I was tugging at it, prying loose its knots as I drove down Pacific Coast Highway, and then suddenly I pulled over to the side of the road because all I wanted to do was listen to this music he had given me. Her voice mixed with the scent of the sea and the memory of that afternoon, and I was sure I’d never heard such lovely music. Even the pain and yearning of it made the pleasure last that much longer.

When he broke up with me later that summer, I threw out that tape and never looked back -- at Googoosh, I mean. I went back to the Black Cats for a while, but that didn’t last too long, either. And I didn’t want to date another Iranian guy. With Iranians your heart broke in very strange places, and it always hurt more no matter who left whom. I started listening to Arabic music and Turkish music. I didn’t understand a word of it, which made it somehow easier to love... and easier to leave.

Nowadays give me Rachid Taha and I am quickly put in a state of rapture. I like my Middle Eastern music laced with irony and always at a little bit of a remove from my own past. Except, of course, when I am longing for longing -- that most Iranian of wants -- which requires that you be either deeply in love or deeply distant from it. There is no middle ground in such things. But there is a sound-track for both conditions: Googoosh.

The other night I saw the new Googoosh music video for "shabe Sepid". I was guite impressed with the piece, it is reminiscent of her old works which have gained her so much fame. I wanted to know if anybody had any information on a new album release.

Although I can not yet see the images posted, I really enjoyed reading your posts about the legendary Googoosh.

My only gripe of her is that I wish she did not mix herself so much with the Los Angeles musical scene and would have kept herself in the high legendary position that she's always been known for ! To me, most of her new material, particularly those made by Mehrdad Asemani will diminish from her status in the long run; which is real shame. She should do what other legendary "super stars" do such as Barbara Streisand, where they come out to perform publicly once every few years and thus create an atmosphere of anticipation among the fans, exactly the same way Googoosh was viewed when she first arrived in Canada back in 2000. Today, she has become another LA style singer who is very "accessible" and should one miss one of her many concerts, another one will be around the corner in a few months.

I realize that most dear members here are die hard fans of this legendary diva and I include myself in that very list. I hope everyone understands that my comments are not meant to hurt anyone's feelings, nor to harm Googoosh's untouchable image. I only echo what many notable musicians have already said about her overuse of "formula" songs in the last 2 albums. I only hope and pray that she too does not fall victim to the money driven LA musical society; where making a quick buck is the name of the game among most big name singers, including those with highly respectable pasts!!!

As the Iranian Diva prepares for her New York debut at Madison Square Garden, her fans get geared up to receive her. The concert is scheduled for October 21st and will be attended by young and old from all over the world. Googoosh will reportedly sing some of her old time favorites as well as hits from her latest album 'Manifest'. The concert will be broadcast in Iran through La-based satellite stations.

OK! It is good to go to any Googoosh event. But I had a hard time convincing myself to go to this one in New York's Madison Square Garden last weekend for one obvious reason: I can not tolerate Mehrdad. After this show, he proved how right I am to feel this way. Please note that I purposely call the event a "show" and not a concert. It did not have the quality of a concert. It was way different than the one we drove to all the way from New Jersey to Toronto six and a half years ago.

The show started exactly at 9 PM. Impressive, yeh! Googoosh showed up on stage without any announcement and started with singing "Talagh". Then she made a gelaayeh (light complaint) about our habbit of being late and went on to say that the show would start regardless. She mentioned that she was honored by the presence of members of the "Pahlavi Family" (KHOSHHAALAM KE DAR HOZOORE KHAANDAANE PAHLAVI HASTAM). She then delivered an excellent medley that drove all of us crazy.

After a few more songs disaster happened... she called Mehrdad on stage for a duet. The audience was not ecstatic! No applauding! The music started and Mehrdad jumped in with his jeans and loose shirt. Then the music paused. He saluted the audience but did not hear any response back. He said "Baba Salaam!" and then went on to say how honored he was being in front of Pahlavis. He said that he remembered a time he was a nobody (probably referring to the time the Pahlavis were in power) and now he is performing in their presence! He said his knees were shaking..."I love you," he said.

I have nothing against the Pahlavis but the dialogue and the act was not up to the moment. Before the show started, when Mrs. Farah Pahlavi arrived and took her chair, people noticed her and clapped. She bowed and showed her respect to them. The Madison Squer Garden theater is not huge but not everyone noticed her. The song was "Akharin Khabar" and Googoosh started off tune. Mehrdad made it worse and it turned out to be torture!

After that, he stayed and she left. They did the same for the rest of the show taking turns. "If you want me you have to hear him!" that was my impression from the whole show. Mehrdad sang all his unremarkably cheap songs off tune. It was not hard to notice that, even though I am not familiar with his songs.

In general, Googoosh was witty and joking in between: "Once when I was khooneh nehsin (forced to stay home after the revolution), we were invited to Ghasem-Abad. You know, Ghasem-Abad, Ghasem-Ababdi dance?! Our host was preparing eggplants for Mirza Ghasemi and her husband was peeling off garlic, ignoring his surroundings. After a while, one of the guests asked him whether he realized who I am. He looked at me and said that my face looked familiar. The surprised guest asked how he did not know that I am Googoosh! The guy looked again and said "Owoo! Chetor toro nakoshtan?! (Wow! How come they didn't kill you?!)"

Googoosh performed "Man Amedeh-am", "Kaj Kolah Khan" and an Azari song "Golli Golli Tomani" with her unique dancing and adaa atvaar! She was repeatedly saying "You folks are asking too much. I am short of breath!... " And I was thinking how right she is! Why do we have to drive her to the point to sing "Kaj kolah khan"? Could we not sit and enjoy her magical concert rather than her show? She has all the elements of a great artist and can sing forever favorites like "Pol", "Do Panjareh", "Gonjeshkaa"...

What happened from Toronto to New York in less than seven years? Where are her values? I do not know how long this will last, but even people are showing their feelings toward Mehrdad openly! She would be a fool not to understand what is going on! We paid for Googoosh so why do we have to be disturbed by Mehrdad? He can not draw 6,000 people in years. He needs to realize his strength. To me, he is a great musician. We need a petition to ask Googoosh to stop having Mehrdad in her concerts! Maybe there is one and I am not aware of it!

هجدهم بهمن ماه، پنجاه و ششمین سالگرد تولد گوگوش، *خواننده محبوب ایرانی* بود. به همین بهانه با دکتر نیلوفر مینا، موسیقی*شناس و استاد کالج هانتر در ایالت نیوجرسی (آمریکا) گفتگویی کردیم. نیلوفر مینا از انگشت*شمار موسیقی*شناسان ایرانی است که پژوهش*های گسترده*ای درباره موسیقی پاپ ایرانی انجام داده است و نتایج پژوهش*های خود را نیز به صورت مقالات و سخنرانی*های متعدد ارائه کرده است.
در آغاز گفتگو، از دکتر مینا درباره دلایل موفقیت گوگوش در جامعه ایران پرسیدم:
فکر نمی*کنم یک دلیل اصلی داشته باشد. دلایل گوناگون اجتماعی و فضای فرهنگی پیش از انقلاب در ایران، دست به دست هم داد و سبب موفقیت گوگوش شد. موسیقی عامه*پسند ایرانی در سال*های پیش از انقلاب طیفی وسیع داشت؛ شامل ترانه*هایی به سبک نیمه*سنتی می*شد که برخی خوانندگان مانند گلپایگانی، هایده و مهستی اجرا می*کردند، و همچنین سبک*های موسیقی پاپ غربی در آن دوره که در کارهای خوانندگانی همچون گوگوش، داریوش و ... تجلی پیدا می*کرد و می*رفت تا می*رسید به سبک گروه*هایی که موسیقی راک غربی را به زبان فارسی و انگلیسی اجرا می*کردند، مثل گروه*های اعجوبه*ها، اسکورپیو و ساند دپارتمنت. گوگوش هم موسیقی پاپ را به زبان اصلی اجرا می*کرد، ولی موفقیت*اش در موسیقی پاپ ایرانی بود. آن سبک از موسیقی پاپ غربی که گوگوش در آن زمان جرا می*کرد، بیشتر از سبک*های دیگر برای جوان*های شهری طبقه*ی متوسط ایرانی دهه*ی ۱۹۷۰ قابل قبول بود. و این تنها به خاطر شخصیت گوگوش، به*عنوان یک خواننده نبود، بلکه او به*عنوان یک شخصیت اجتماعی نمادین توسط مجله، سینما، رادیو و تلویزیون به جوانان غرب*گرای ایرانی ارائه می*شد. گوگوش در فضای پیش از انقلاب، نماد یک زن ایده*آل مدرن جوان ایرانی بود. این موضوع را در زمینه*های گوناگون می*توان دید؛ مثلاً از طرز لباس*پوشیدن گوگوش که مدرن و غربی بود، نوعی که موهای سرش را کوتاه می*کرد و در رفتارش که راحت، شاد و جذاب بود و می*توانست ایده*آل رفتاری باشد برای دخترهای جوان شهری و دیگران در آن زمان؛ گوگوش از کودکی در فضای سینما و تلویزیون ایران بزرگ شده بود و به خاطر همین موضوع، محبوبیت بسیاری داشت. کسانی*که سن*شان هم بیشتر بود. مردم را دوست داشتند، چون از کودکی دیده بودند که گوگوش چگونه بزرگ شده است. شاید از حدود ۱۰ سال پیش از انقلاب، سبک جدیدی از موسیقی پاپ ایران جلو آمد که ترانه*سرایان مبدع به آن «ترانه*ی نوین ایرانی» می*گفتند و این ترانه*ها جهت*گیری سیاسی و مترقی داشت. خوانندگانی مانند داریوش و ابی این ترانه*ها را می*خواندند و گوگوش هم تعدادی از این ترانه*ها را خواند و این سبب شد که میان جوانان روشنفکر هم تا حد زیادی محبوبیت پیدا بکند.

بیشتر از مسایل اجتماعی و فرهنگی در آن دوه صحبت کردید، به لحاظ موسیقی هم برایمان بگویید که دلایل محبوبیت گوگوش چه بود؟
صدای موسیقی یا سبک موسیقی؟... خب، گوگوش که خودش موسیقی کارهایش را نمی*نوشت. اگر بخواهیم درباره*ی ترانه*هایی که گوگوش خوانده صحبت کنیم، باید درباره*ی کار ترانه*سرایان و آهنگسازان بخصوصی که برای گوگوش می*نوشتند صحبت کنیم. ولی اگر از لحاظ سبک خواندن بخواهم بگویم، به نظر من و همانطور که گفتم، بیشتر موفقیت گوگوش در این که صدای زیبایی داشت نبود، بلکه بیشتر به*خاطر رفتار موسیقایی و حرفه*ای*اش روی صحنه بود که محبوبیت پیدا کرده بود. این نظر من است. فکر می*کنم از بابت محبوبیت گوگوش نمی*توان تنها در رابطه با قطعاتی که *خوانده بگوییم، چون خودش قطعاتش را نمی*نوشت بلکه انتخاب می*کرد.
یک ترانه طبیعتاً محصول مشترک کار ترا
