Is there really any difference? "Merry Christmas"' or "Happy Holidays"? It really doesn't make that much of a difference to me. It is the sentiment behind the comment. For people to make such a big deal out of a simple comment really makes you wonder where their priorities are. I mean really, it is amazing to think that almost the whole US of A has given such a response to this.
The other day I was on a short trip and I noticed that places you would never think would say "Merry Christmas" have signs up saying just that, doing so to draw people in to come shop at their place. It seems to me that the only reason Wal-Mart was condemned for this was because they had an easy wall to climb considering the fact that they already had so many people suing them for one thing or another.
I will be the first to say that Wal-Mart was not the first to say "Happy Holidays" to a customer. For many years, many department stores said either "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas'. It was never a big deal until this year. Now anywhere you go people are afraid to say either fearing that the person might be offended by something that is said.
It is the holiday season. There are several holidays during this time. We are all supposed to accept each other and be at peace. Everyone should be able to say what they choose... either "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas". There should not be a blanket greeting to cover everything. It should be left to the person giving the wishes.
The holidays this time of year should be enjoyed not having to worry whether you are going to offend someone if you say something. We have enough problems to worry about without worrying about something like this. I personally say both. I say both without giving deep thought to either one. It really depends on my mood and what is on my mind at that time.
I think the majority of people were the same way, but now it is like their "Merry Christmas" comes out forced, as if they think they HAVE to say it. Why do we do stupid things like this to ourselves? Why can we not relax and enjoy the holidays with our family and friends? We really don't need silly things to make more hate or sadness. This is supposed to be the time of year we put all of our differences aside and enjoy ourselves.
This time of year has so much excitement, so much joy! We need to learn the small things like this are the least of our worries and that we should let it go. Was it really worth making such an issue? I think not. So I will wish everyone: Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a very Happy New Year.
