Gifted Young Iranian Actress Creates a Buzz in Hollywood

Nazanin Boniadi has been dubbed the "Persian Audrey Hepburn" by Hollywood insiders. Perhaps it is her elegance and poise combined with a lightness of spirit that has earned her such a title. "It is an honor to be likened to my all-time favorite actress. She is a legend and her work will inspire generations of actors to come" Nazanin has responded.

Nazanin was born in Tehran, Iran. Her parents moved to London shortly after, where she was raised with an emphasis on morality, integrity and education.

Fluent in both Farsi and English, Nazanin graduated top of her class from a prestigious private high school in London, England. She went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree, with Honors, in Biological Sciences from the University of California Irvine.

Adept at multi-tasking, Nazanin never lost focus of helping her community while growing intellectually. Her molecular research into finding a cure for cancer and heart transplant rejection won her the competitive Chang Pin-Chun Undergraduate Research Award. Nazanin demonstrated her leadership abilities as Assistant Editor-in-Chief of MedTimes, UCI's undergradute medical newspaper, and as Head Coordinator of the Biology of Cancer class on campus. Nazanin is also a published writer in the filed of human and civil rights.

However, Nazanin's abilities do not merely stop here. She is skilled at ice skating, certified in CPR and excellent at playing piano.

Nazanin's passion for the performing arts started at the age of ten when she received a merit from the Royal College of Music in London for playing the violin. Other artistic achievements include a certificate in ballet from the acclaimed Vaccani School of Dance in London, and winning the British Yamaha Electone Festival for playing the electric organ.

After appearing as the lead in numerous high school productions such as The Boyfriend, Joseph & the Amazing Techinicolor Dreamcoat and Westside Story, Nazanin earned her first TV credit hosting Early Bird , a popular children's TV show in the U.K.

New to Hollywood, Nazanin is quickly proving herself as a versatile talent and has already appeared in numerous independent projects, including The Snitch by director Ming Lo and the feature film Gameface by director James Rhodimer. Her face has become instantly recognizable in Persian communities worldwide due to her recent appearance in Afshin's popular music video, Bikhial .

Nazanin is sure to make quite a splash in the film festival circuit this year, with three projects up for consideration. Director Freya Parekh of USC Film School who recently worked with Nazanin in the short drama Kal: Yesterday & Tomorrow stated "Passion is emitted from Nazanin in her every move and it shows on-screen. She is knowledageble, inquisitive and a flawless beauty. در هاليوود چه نقش هايی بهت ميدن؟

متاسفانه با چيزهايی که تازگی در دنيا پيش آمده، به آدم های اهل خاورميانه بيشتر نقش های تروريستی می دن. البته به نظر من يه هنر پيشه بايد همه نقش ها رو بتونه خوب بازی کنه. ولی برای اول کار، آدم بايد فقط مواظب باشه که ديدی که مردم از فرهنگ ايرانی دارن يک ديد مثبت باشه. در حال حاضر هاليوود خيلی نقش های منفی از آدم های خاور ميانه نشون ميده و برای من اين خيلی مهمه که مردم دنيا مخصوصا در باره ايران ديد خوبی داشته باشن

خوب از نقش هايی که در حال حاضر بازی می کنی چند نمونه برای ما بگو

فيلم "گيم فيس" را که تازه تمام کردم فيلم هاليووديه. "گيم فيس" يک فيلم کمديه و من نقش زنی رو دارم که از عشق بيزار شدم و اجازه نميدم که نه خودم عاشق کسی بشم و نه کسی عاشق من بشه

تو بيشتر نقش های کمدی را دوست داری يا رومانتيک رو، خودت بيشتر چی ترجيح ميدی؟

نه من خودم بيشتر از همه درام رو دوست دارم که بتونم احساسات مختلف را نشون بدم، مثلا بتونم گريه کنم، عصبانی بشم و بتونم آروم باشم، يعنی بتونم همه احساسات رو قشنگ نشون بدم

آيا يک همچين نقشی بازی کردی يا قرار است بازی کنی؟

بله "گيم فيس" اتفاقا با اينکه کمديه، همه اين احساسات در اون نشون داده شده. "دی سينيچ" و خيلی فيلم های ديگه هم همنطور، ولی من اکثرا درام بازی می کنم

سريال هم بازی می کنی؟

نخير در تلويزيون هنوز بازی نکرده ام، بيشتر کارم در فيلمه. تنها کار تلويزيونی که کردم در سن خيلی جوونی در لندن در برنامه کودکان بنام "يرلی برث" بود. ولی در اصل عشق و علاقه ام به فيلمه

خوب ديگران هم آرزو دارن بتونن برن سينما و خيلی جالبه که تو تونستی به عنوان يه دختر خارجی در اين صنعت آمريکايی راه پيدا کنی، خوب با اينکه در آمريکا بزرگ شدی و با فرهنگ اين کشور خوب آشنايی داری، اين کار خيلی مشکله، تازه در چند فيلم هم بازی کردی. جريان چطور بوده که وارد اين کار شدی؟

راستش واقعا شانس آوردم. دور و برم آدم های مثبت بودن که خيلی به من کمک کردن و ديگه اينکه در هاليوود خيلی راحت بود که به آدم بگن نميشه، سعی خودت رو بکن ولی اميدی نداشته باش. ولی تنها چيزی که ما داريم اميده. بدون اميد و تلاش واقعا آدم به هيچ جای نمی رسه و من تا جاييکه می تونم واقعا سخت کار می کنم و نصيحت هايی که تا به حال به من شده، واقعا نصيحت های خوب و مثبت بوده. و همونطور که گفتم مهمترين چيز اينه که دور و بر آدم مردم خوب و مثبت باشه
ولی خوب چطور آشنا داشتی که بتونه تو رو معرفی کنه و اون چيزی که جرقه زد چی بود؟

چيزی که جرقه زد، در اصل راستش را بخواهيد، استاد هنر پيشگی ام بود. او در دهه هفتاد در هاليوود کارش رو شروع کرد و اونقدر هنر پيشه ماهريه که وقتی من آموزش رو با اون شروع کردم، واقعا چيزهای زيادی در مورد هنر پيشگی ياد گرفتم. انقدر چيزهای مختلف به من ياد داد که وقتی که به مصاحبه رفتم اصلا احساس ترس و نگرانی نمی کردم. به راحتی می تونم بگم کسی که می خواد هنر پيشه بشه و موفق باشه، مهمترين چيز اينه که يک استاد خوب داشته باشه

گيم فيس تا ماه ژنويه بيرون مياد و وارد فيستيوال سان دنس ميشه

اميدوارم، خيلی خوشحال ميشم که بتونم به عنوان يک جوون ايرانی روی فرش قرمز راه برم

مثل اينکه به موسيقی نه تنها علاقه داری، خودت هم ساز ميزنی، درسته؟

بله. پيانو و ويلن می زنم. من عاشق موسيقی هستم. از بچگی پدرم به من می گفت "نازنين جان، برای همه پيانو بزن

در عين حال مثل اينکه توی دانشگاه تحقيقاتی هم در زمينه سرطان کردی؟

هميشه پيش خودم فکر می کردم که ما در سراسر دنيا پزشک ايرانی خوب داريم ، مهندس ابرانی خوب داريم، وکيل زبردست ايرانی داريم، ولی چرا تو هاليوود که اين همه هنرپيشه و کارگردان هست، يک هنرپيشه خوب وجود ندارد. و به همين دليل بود که وقتی شنيدم که شهره آغداشلو توی يک فيلم بازی کرده و کانديد جايزه اسکار شده خيلی خوشحال شدم.

اما چند وقت پيش به اسم نازنين بنيادی هنرپيشه سينما برخورد کردم که کارش را در هاليود شروع کرده. خيلی ذوق کردم و تصميم گرفتم با او يک مصاحبه بکنم.

از او در مورد اينکه چطورشد به دنيای هنرپيشگی کشيده شد پرسيدم:

با وجود اينکه من بيولوژی خوندم، ولی هميشه از بچگی می خواستم که هنرپيشه بشم. هشت سالم بود که اولين تئاترم را در مدرسه بازی کردم و از آنجايی که تصميم داشتم هنرپيشه بشم در اين مورد تحقيقاتی کردم و بيشتر مطمئن شدم که می خواهم اين راه را دنبال کنم.

چند سالگی از ايران خارج شدی؟

من بيست روزم بود که مادر و پدرم من را آوردن لندن و تا نوزده سالگی تو لندن زندگی کردم، بعدش رفتم به آمريکا و از اون موقع تو کاليفرنيا زندگی می کنم.

با توجه به اينکه هيچوقت تو ايران زندگی نکردين چطور اينقدر زبان و لحجه فارسی شما خيلی خوبه؟

من وقتی پنج سالم بود و توی اخبار صحنه های جنگ ايران رو می ديدم اشک می ريختم. برای مادر و پدرم خيلی عجيب بود که اين بچه کوچولو که هيچوقت هم ايرانو نديده چطور اينقدر تحت تاثير قرار می گيره. علتش اين بود که من هميشه خودمو ايرونی ميدونستم. حتی وقتی وارد هاليوود شدم، خيلی ها بهم گفتن اسمتو عوض کن، يه اسمی برای خودت انتخاب کن که تلفظ کردنش برای آمريکايی ها راحت تر باشه، ولی من اينکارو نکردم چون من يه هنر پيشه ايرونی ام و اسمم هم به فارسی معنيش خيلی قشنگه.

چطور وارد هاليوود شدی؟

يکی از دوستای خيلی خوب من هنرپيشه بود و اون منو تشويق کرد که هنرپيشه بشم. من هميشه علاقه داشتم به مردم کمک کنم و فکر می کردم تنها راه کمک به مردم اينه که آدم پزشک بشه. ولی اين دوستم برام توضيح داد که اگه آدم هنرپيشه هم باشه می تونه توی کارهای خيريه شرکت کنه. من الان توی يک موسسه ای عضوم که کارهای حقوق بشر می کنه و مردم با موضوعات مربوط حقوق بشر آشنا می کنه.

الان مشغول چه کار هنری ای هستين؟

من الان مشغول بازی در دو تا فيلم هاليوودی هستم. يکی از اين فيلمها اسمش هست "گيم فيس"، که من توش نقش اول بازی می کنم. هردوی اين فيلمها در سال ۲۰۰۷ آماده ميشه.

ورود به هاليوود خيلی سخت بود؟

آسان نبود ولی من چون کلاسهای مختلف هنرپيشگی رو گذرونده بودم، و با آمادگی برای تستها رفته بودم بالاخره تونستم وارد هاليوود بشم.

فرهنگ خانوادگی شما چطور با ورود تون به هاليوود برخورد کرد؟

من فکر می کنم علت اينکه خانواده های ايرونی خيلی ازهنر پشتيبانی نمی کنن اينه که هيچ نمونه خوبی و موفقی نديدن، برای همين يه مقدار نگرانند. ولی تا موقعی که ما تلاش نکنيم که نمونه های خوبی در اين رشته ها داشته باشيم اين وضع بهتر نمی شه. من هم اولش مجبور شدم با پدر و مادرم صحبت کنم و اونا هم که علاقه منو ديدن راضی شدن و خيلی هم ازم حمايت کردن.

الگوهای شما کی هستن؟

اولين الگوهای من مادرم و پدرم هستن. در هنرپيشگی هم خانم مری آپيک، خانم شهره آغداشلو و خانم ادری هپبورن هستن که نمونه های خيلی خوبی بودن برای من ومن هنوز خيلی بايد تلاش کنم تا به اونا برسم.

Our very own Nazanin Boniadi has landed the role of student nurse at General Hospital’s Night Shift. This series is a primetime, weekly spin-off of the popular daytime show, General Hospital. Nazanin recently wrote in and gave us an update. She recently attended the 2007 daytime Emmy Awards for her role in the series.

I asked her how she landed the role. She said, “Thousands of headshots were submitted to ABC for the role of student nurse Stacey. All it said on the breakdowns was 'early twenties, any ethnicity'. I was told they auditioned around 700 girls for the 3 student nurses they chose: myself (Iranian), Amanda Baker (Caucasian), and Angel Wainwright (African-American). When I walked in the first audition there were at least 20 girls there at the same time as me.

I remember looking around me and thinking 'are we all up for the same role?' And sure enough, we were! This was all about good acting and not fitting a certain look per se. After that, there were 2 call backs and each time there were still a vast variety of ethnicities there. Overall, it was a three week process of waiting and anticipating what could happen. Finally, I got the call and heard I got one of the three student nurse roles! Once they chose me, they named my character 'Leyla Mir' and I met several times with Robert Guza, the head writer of General Hospital, and the new show, General Hospital Night Shift, to establish this Iranian-British character. Since I personally grew up in London, Robert decided to have me keep my British accent and really write me in as an Iranian who grew up in England and is now studying in the US.

The current schedule for General Hospital’s Night Shift is very demanding. The series shoots a whole episode in just one day, as they use the same set as General Hospital. Recordings go four days per week and the first day on set, Nazanin spent 16 hours on the job. Her second day she was there 19 hours. Sounds to me like she has the hours of a real nurse!

Between table reads, fittings and promotional work, she has been very busy but counts her blessings, as she quotes that only about 5% of actors in Hollywood are working at any given time. (now I know why there are so many cars on the 405).

Nazanin is excited about the role because according to her, it’s the first time an American TV series has cast Iranians in positive, everyday roles as Iranians. Nazanin plays a student nurse along side Iranian Dominic Rains (aka Amin Nazemzadeh) in the role of a doctor. She says, “We are not terrorists or battered wives. We are just citizens, who happen to be Iranian. This is groundbreaking and we should applaud Disney, ABC and SOAPnet for being the first to do this! Although there are Iranians who currently have series regular roles, for example Maz Jobrani plays an Indian on Knights of Prosperity, they are not playing Iranians. This is truly an honor for me and Dominic!”

Both actors have recurring roles on daytime General Hospital, as they cross back and forth on the two shows. General Hospital which has been airing for 44 years, gave A-listers like Demi Moore and Meg Ryan their start in Hollywood.

The first episodes of General Hospital can be seen at 2pm Pacific Time on ABC on July 4th and 5th. General Hospital Night Shift premieres Thursday July 12th at 11pm on SOAPnet.

Nazanin studied Biology in college and was a great pre-med student. She won the “Chang Pin-Chun” Undergraduate Research Award for her work in heart-transplant rejection and cancer research. It is therefore very fitting that she at least get to play a nurse on television. I am sure her parents are very proud of her new role as well.

In a recent report I had announced that Fansites in the US had announced that Shaun Toub was to be cast as the Comic Book Super Villian The Mandarin However it seems that the Iranian American actor is now cast as Yinsen according to imdb.com. As all Hollywood Super Productions such films are often surrounded by all sorts of rumours and counter rumours sometimes encouraged by the Studio's who wish to shoot their film in high secrecy.

Lately Variety reported that British Iranian actress Nazanin Boniadi (CW's The Game) has booked a supporting role in Iron Man.

Boniadi has apparently joined Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Shaun Toub, Leslie Bibb, Bill Smitrovich, Nazanin Boniadi in the superhero film, directed by Jon Favreau. However imdb,com a fairly reliable source has not yet confirmed this news.
