  • Iran displays Holocaust cartoons (winners anounced)

More than 200 Holocaust cartoons from around the world are on display at a museum in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Organisers of the exhibition say they are testing the West's commitment to freedom of speech.

A competition to choose the drawings was announced in February, in response caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published by European newspapers.

Israel's Holocaust authority, Yad Vashem, criticised the exhibition, calling it a "flashing red light".

The drawings were chosen from nearly 1,200 entries received from various countries including the United States, Indonesia and Turkey.

One of the cartoons shows the Statue of Liberty holding a book on the Holocaust in one hand and giving a Nazi salute with the other.

    Cartoon controversy

The Iran Cartoon Organisation and Hamshahri newspaper are putting on the exhibition.

Organiser Masoud Shojai said: "You see they allow the Prophet to be insulted. But when we talk about the Holocaust, they consider it so holy that they punish people for questioning it."

The publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad sparked protests around the world earlier this year.

One showed Muhammad, whose image is banned in Islam, as a terrorist bomber.

Yad Vashem said the display in "Iran, a nation that aspires to nuclear capabilities, and whose president has made genocidal statements against Israel, is a flashing red light signalling danger not only to Israel, but to all enlightened nations".

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prompted international criticism last year by saying the Holocaust was a "myth" and that Israel should be "wiped off the map".

Jewish leaders, Paris slam Iran Holocaust cartoon show

The Israeli government, Jewish groups and the mayor of Paris on Thursday condemned an Iranian exhibition of cartoons on the Nazi Holocaust, accusing Tehran of spreading hatred and trivializing the murder of six million Jews.

Organizers of Iran's International Holocaust Cartoon's Contest said the museum exhibit, which has drawn more than 200 entries, aims to challenge Western taboos about the discussing the Holocaust.

Israeli government spokesman Gideon Meir called on the international community "to express disgust from such an anti-Semitic and inhuman event."

Yosef Lapid, chairman of the council of the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, said: "The exhibit not only is horrific propaganda that supports Holocaust denial, it also paves the road to justifying genocide of the Jews in Israel."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has drawn international condemnation for dismissing the Holocaust as a "myth." Nazi Germany killed six million European Jews in World War Two.

Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called for Israel's destruction.

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe condemned the display in a letter to Iran's ambassador, saying it "intended to mock the tragedy of the (Holocaust) and to trivialize a new anti-Semitic bid under the false pretext of art and freedom of speech."

France is home to western Europe's largest Jewish and Muslim communities. It is a crime in European countries such as France, Germany and Austria to deny the Holocaust.

"At a time when violence and war should lead everyone toward a willingness for dialogue, appeasement and tolerance, such a step serves, on the contrary, motivations dominated by hatred," Delanoe, a Socialist, said.

Russia's Congress of Jewish Religious Organizations and Associations urged Muslims around the world "to reject the blasphemy of political intriguers and say in their very hearts, 'Keep your hands off the memory of the Holocaust's victims."'

Shimon Samuels of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Paris said Iranian's Holocaust cartoon exhibit was part of the "Iranian drive toward its own aggrandizement on the back of the Jews."

Salomon Korn, chairman of the Jewish community in the German city of Frankfurt, said he thought the exhibition was "pathologically crude."

"Ahmadinejad is demanding from the West what he does not allow himself, and of which he perhaps has no idea, namely tolerance," Korn said.

Iran's best-selling newspaper, Hamshahri, launched a competition in February for the best cartoon about the Holocaust in retaliation for the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in Danish and other European newspapers.

Those images of the Prophet sparked attacks on European embassies in Muslim nations, including missions in Iran.

Samuels said a member of the Simon Wiesenthal Center submitted two cartoons to Iran's competition, depicting Ahmadinejad as Hitler.

Samuels said the cartoons were sent back.

Iran said Sunday it would go ahead and sponsor a conference to examine the scientific evidence supporting the Holocaust in the autumn, dismissing it as exaggerated.

The move to proceed with the controversial conference, likely to deepen Teheran's international isolation, came as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan raised concerns with Iranian officials over an exhibition of cartoons about the Holocaust.

EU gives Iran last chance for diplomacy
Hard-line President Ahmoud Ahmadinejad already had called the Nazis' World War II slaughter of 6 million European Jews a myth and said the Jewish state should be wiped off the map or moved to Germany or the United States. Those remarks prompted a global outpouring of condemnation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said that because the Holocaust is a scientific issue, both opponents and proponents of the existence of the Holocaust could participate.

"God willing, a conference on the Holocaust will be held in the autumn. The Holocaust is not a sacred issue that one can't touch," he told reporters. "I have visited the Nazi camps in Eastern Europe. I think it is exaggerated," Asefi said.

Asefi did not disclose where the Holocaust conference would be held, nor who would attend. Iran first raised the possibility of the conference in January.

Annan brought up the exhibit that opened in response to Muslim outrage over the Prophet Muhammad caricatures. In talks Saturday with Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, said Annan's spokesman Ahmad Fawzi.

Annan told Mottaki "we should avoid anything that incites hatred" according to Fawzi.

The Holocaust cartoon exhibit opened last month at Teheran's Caricature House, with 204 entries from Iran and abroad.

The cartoons were submitted after the exhibit's co-sponsor, the Hamshahri newspaper, said it wanted to test the West's tolerance for drawings about the Nazis' mass murder of European Jews during World War II. The entries on display came from nations including United States, Indonesia and Turkey.

                              Paper reprints Holocaust cartoons

A Danish newspaper has printed cartoons about the Holocaust commissioned by Iran after cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad triggered violent protests.
The newspaper - Information - published six of the cartoons, which are on display in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Several of the cartoons contrast the plight of the Palestinians with that of the victims of the Holocaust.

Editor-in-chief Palle Weis said he had thought carefully about publishing the cartoons and said it was not a stunt.

He told the BBC the cartoons accompanied a news story about the exhibition. He said they were "tasteless but predictable".

                              'Pretty harmless'

Another Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, sparked the international row last year after it published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, including one of him wearing a bomb on his head.

There were angry protests in Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of the world, in which at least 50 people died.

In response, a competition was organised in Iran inviting people to draw cartoons about the Holocaust. Organisers said they were testing the West's commitment to freedom of speech.

Information said it had decided to print the cartoons after consulting the main rabbi in Copenhagen.

"He said he had seen worse examples," editor-in-chief Mr Weis told the BBC.

"They are tasteless but predictable... they're pretty harmless. I don't think they would be called great art."

                              Skulls

One of the cartoons, by a Moroccan cartoonist, shows a scene bisected by the barrier being constructed in the West Bank by Israel.

On one side, a gravestone reading "Holocaust" and bearing a Star of David stands in the sunshine. Underneath the ground is buried a single skull.

On the other side, it is night-time. A gravestone here says "Sabra and Shatila" - a reference to infamous massacres carried out in Lebanon in 1982 by Lebanese Christian militiamen allied to Israel - underneath a Palestinian flag. Underneath the ground are buried scores of skulls.

Mr Weis said he was not nervous about his readers' reactions to the decision to print a selection of the cartoons.

He said an interview with the rabbi was published alongside the cartoons, and an editorial inside explained the decision.

"Our readers would be disappointed if we didn't print the cartoons," Mr Weis said.
