  • Marine charged with killing newborn son

FRESNO, California (AP) -- A Marine accused of killing his newborn son after his wife died of childbirth complications was charged four days after the 3-month-old's death.

Lance Cpl. Robert Quiroz, 20, was charged Wednesday with murder, two felony counts of assault on a child causing death and corporal injury to a child, said Assistant District Attorney Robert Ellis.

He is accused of beating his son, Roman Quiroz, to death.

Quiroz was jailed Monday and is being held at the Fresno County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying, but Quiroz told a TV station in September that he felt overwhelmed as a single parent of two and struggled to accept his son.

In August, Quiroz deployed to a training camp in Kuwait with the Ninth Communication Battalion from Camp Pendleton. He was called home three days later with the news that his wife had given birth to a boy, but had suffered an aneurysm after breast feeding the child.

Quiroz arrived in Fresno faced with ending her life support and assuming sole responsibility for their two children.

After the infant's death on Saturday, authorities took Quiroz's 18-month-old daughter into protective custody.

A state agency also is looking into whether Fresno County social workers failed to investigate if abuse was happening after the infant suffered a broken arm in October

grief makes people do crazy things, what a sad ending to a life. why do things like this have to happen? why does a young mother have to die of an aneurism? why does a 20 year old father have to be faced with the grief of losing his wife and raising 2 children on his own? what drives a man to kill his newborn son? its definately worth thinking about.

there is no need to thank me, i need to thank you for bringing this to my attention. Life is very precious and we realize its worth only after it has gone. I am sure the father felt horrible the second his son took his last breath and he wished he could undo what he had done. Being a marine who had experienced war didnt help make him a more patient person either, i am sure the horrific experiences he endured during war made him feel even more desperate after the loss of his wife. he may have blamed his not being here on the fact that she died, feeling that had he been here he could have done something for her. I feel really bad for him.
