Katherine Moss (born January 16, 1974), known as Kate Moss, is an English supermodel who is known for her waifish figure, high-profile relationships and iconic advertising campaigns. She has appeared on over 300 magazine covers.

Moss was born in Addiscombe, London Borough of Croydon, England. She attended Ridgeway Primary School, then Riddlesdown High School but she was not noted for her academic success though she did excel at sports. According to Vermorel's book Addicted to Love: Kate Moss she gained one C (in Science) and all the rest were Ds, Es, and Us at GCSE level.

She was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas (the founder of Storm Model Management) in 1988, at JFK Airport in New York City, after a vacation in the Bahamas. Moss's career began when Corinne Day shot black and white photographs of her for British magazine The Face when she was 15, in a photo shoot titled "The Third Summer of Love". Moss then went on to become the anti-supermodel of the 1990s in contrast to the supermodels at the time, such as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, who were known for their curvaceous and tall figures.

Moss charmed the fashion industry despite being unusual short for a runway model, and has worked for such elite houses including Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Burberry, Chanel, Missoni, Dior, Longchamp and David Yurman. Now in her 30s, Moss is still working and has become a supermodel in her own right.

She has a daughter, Lila Grace, born on 29 September 2002, with Dazed & Confused editor Jefferson Hack.

On the 1st of January 2007 Moss married Pete Doherty. The private wedding ceremony took place on the island of Phuket in Thailand. Most friends and family members are worried that there might not be a pre-nup, and that by this Moss might be setting her supposidly 25 million Pounds fortune in danger especially as Doherety is know to be poverty stricken.

British tabloids, particularly the Daily Mirror, have long claimed that Moss habitually used cocaine. In interviews Moss dismissed these claims as ridiculous.

On 15 September 2005, London's Daily Mirror ran front page and inside photos that seemed to show Moss snorting several lines of cocaine at a Babyshambles recording session. Most tabloids have reported that Moss used a £5 note to snort five lines in 40 minutes. It has been alleged by Babyshambles' then singer Pete Doherty that James Mullord, his former manager, sold the photos to the newspaper for more than £150,000.Within a short time of publication, Moss lost major modelling contracts with several international companies. On 20 September 2005, the Swedish fashion retailer H&M, which intended to feature her in a campaign of their autumn clothes range designed by Moss's good friend Stella McCartney, announced instead that it was dropping Moss after the drug allegations. The contract was reportedly worth £4 million a year.A day later, Chanel announced that it would not be renewing its contract with Moss, which was set to expire in that October, although the company said that its decision had nothing to do with the drug scandal. Burberry also decided to drop Moss's campaign with them. Moss quickly issued an apology though she stopped short of admitting drug use. "I take full responsibility for my actions. I also accept that there are various personal issues that I need to address and have started taking the difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them," she said. "I want to apologise to all of the people I have let down because of my behaviour which has reflected badly on my family, friends, co-workers, business associates and others."

Moss continued to appear in major ad campaigns during this period for Dior. She was on the cover of the November 2005 W and also appeared inside in a multi-page fashion shoot. She was also defended by friends and supporters, including models Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen, French actress Catherine Deneuve, her ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp, and designer Alexander McQueen. McQueen's defense was especially notable and during his walk out after a fashion show he wore a t-shirt saying "We love you Kate". Artist Stella Vine also supported her, and paintings of Moss by Vine in this incident were exhibited and reproduced in the press. Pop singer Robbie Williams said of Moss' relationship with Doherty, "I can understand why Kate finds it difficult to leave Pete, he has a certain charisma surrounding him."

Also in November 2005, Moss ended her relationship with Doherty soon after he checked himself out of Meadows Clinic in Arizona, failing to complete a programme for drug rehabilitation. Moss herself underwent successful treatment there in October and had urged Doherty to seek the same treatment himself. Doherty claims that their separation involved other issues, telling the The Sun newspaper that Moss left him because, “I can’t buy her diamonds and my dick is too small.”

The model and rock star reportedly made a formal commitment to each other in a beach ceremony on New Year's Day.

But Moss's spokesman denied the pair had tied the knot, and were simply on holiday on the island of Phuket.

"Contrary to various entirely false media reports, there has not been any kind of marriage ceremony in Thailand. She is on holiday," he said.

The couple were photographed apparently celebrating their "ceremony" with champagne at a villa overlooking a beach on the island.

Moss, 32, was pictured barefoot in a silver dress, while Doherty, 27, wore a black suit and his trademark trilby hat.

Legally binding

Wedding services including Buddhist prayers, the pouring of blessed water and entwining of flower garlands are popular among visitors to the Thai island.

But as such ceremonies are not legally binding, British nationals must still undertake a civil service in the UK.

Despite the marriage denial, bookmakers who took bets on the couple getting married this year have said the duo are "living on borrowed time".

David Williams, of Ladbrokes, said the bookmaker has closed its book on the pair tying the knot.

But he added that the firm is offering odds of 4/1 that the couple will divorce before 2008.

Moss and Doherty's rocky relationship has been staple fodder for the tabloids since they met in 2005.

Ex-Libertines singer Doherty is serving a two-year supervision order for drug offences.

And Moss's modelling career has flourished despite being photographed allegedly taking cocaine in a music studio last year.

Kate Moss' Sweet Smell of Success
Kate Moss has announced that she is set to launch her own fragrance with cosmetics brand Coty. This extremely lucrative contract is reportedly worth five million pounds.

A spokesperson for Coty, the world's largest fragrance company, said they chose the supermodel because she is "a one-of-a-kind modern beauty icon...This has made her a leading beauty face of the new millennium."

Kate is reportedly thrilled with the deal: " I've been delighted to work with Coty over the years and am pleased to collaborate with them on my first fragrance," she said. Moss already has a history with Coty; she is the spokesperson for the company's makeup line Rimmel London.

With the fragrance set to hit stores in the fall, there is definite cause for Moss and her boyfriend, Babyshambles frontman, Pete Doherty to celebrate.

On a recent shopping trip, they both seemed in high spirits - Doherty even pulled a prank on waiting photographers by spraying them with his drink. The couple then drove off in Kate's classic blue MG convertible.

Don't worry, you're on the home straight now! We've been eating, sleeping and breathing Kate Moss for the last 24 hours, and it's almost time for a break. This is the final piece we have to show you from the Kate Moss for Topshop collection, though we've got lots of videos and a final round-up to come before we sign off on the event completely (go on, you know you love it really).

I thought I'd finish on a high, with Kim looking very supermodel-esque in the showstopping chain mail style sequinned mini dress (£120). It might, logistically, be one of the most difficult dresses to wear (Kim was scared to sit down for fear of tearing it) but it definitely looks very Kate and would turn a lot of heads!

Because of the way it's constructed (big paillettes are held together by fine thread) the dress is not only delicate, it's also incredibly sheer and see-through so it needs a black slip (surprisingly hard to fin) or very thick tights and a longline vest underneath to keep you from showing off too much. Kate Moss could probably get away with wearing it with nothing but a pair of knickers, but as we all know, she's the exception to just about every style rule going.

Considering we do actually need to move about and do things in real life, £120 for a dress like this is a lot to pay if you're not good at mending. You may be lucky and wear it ten times without a single thread coming loose, but something tells me sod's law would come into play the first time I wore something like this in public, and I'd end up half-naked, leaving a trail of sequins in my wake. It looks fantastic on Kim and I think the black tights and super-high heels finish it off a treat, but I don't think even she would trust herself to wear this on a night out!

DRESSES as big as a doily - that's what I'd been warned before heading down to the Manchester flagship Topshop store. And sure enough, it's a good job they weren't charging by the inch of material when it came to some of the key pieces in the eagerly-awaited Kate Moss range.

They might make those bum-hugging denim hotpants up to a size 16 - but hell or high water would not persuade me to meander down Market Street in a pair.

Yes Moss's collection looks great in the much-hyped publicity shots. But, let's face it, she could turn out in Ethel Austin's finest and still look good. So, while I concede she's made rather a success of supermodelling, I had my doubts about her design abilities.

However, once inside the store - for a sneak preview before the hordes descend - I have to (begrudgingly) admit that she's done quite a good job.

As predicted, the 50-piece range is not exactly a revelation, being based mainly on Kate's wardrobe. But then that makes good business sense, as the whole aim of the project seems to be to grab a bit of her personal style.

The hit of the day seems to be the pansy-print number, the black halter-neck dress and a skinny rib vest.

Personally, I can't see the point in splashing out extra pounds for a plain white vest with a little Kate Moss tag inside, and I can't face the prospect of baring my legs in the LBD. So, in the name of research, I grab a flowery dress (£45) and a cream silk military jacket (£70) and head for the changing rooms.

I love the jacket, although it doesn't love me, being the right cut and length only for a string-bean supermodel. The dress, meanwhile, does have a hint of a pregnancy smock about it for anyone without a concave stomach.

But what the heck, it would be rude not to make at least one purchase. Looks like Moss mania is contagious after all.

British supermodel Kate Moss won glowing early reviews for her new clothing range, helping to offset some barbed criticism of the designs in the United States.

Further underlining her popularity in Britain, buyers unwilling to join scrums at Topshop stores nationwide on Tuesday when the range went on sale were logging on to online auctioneer eBay to snap up their favourite items.

Fashion experts were quick to point out that the collection of about 50 designs, ranging in price from STG12 ($A28.97) to STG195 ($A470.73), may well have been inspired by Moss more than actually designed by her.

"She has fulfilled every teenage girl's dream by letting them loose in her wardrobe," wrote Jess Cartner-Morley, fashion editor for the Guardian newspaper.




"Instead of aiming for a high-concept album, she has simply issued the Greatest Hits of Kate."

Hilary Alexander of the Telegraph said those who questioned Moss's input were missing the point.

"What the public want to buy into is a little of the magic and allure that is Kate Moss's individual style. That is exactly what she is giving them," she said.

In the United States, where the Topshop range goes on sale soon, the reception has been cooler.

The New York Post ran a recent story under the headline "Duplikate" and added: "The line she's delivered for the British chain Topshop ... looks like Kate copying a lot of other people's stuff Kate's worn before."

New York magazine, which wrote scathingly about Moss and her sometimes controversial private life, summed up the collection which it viewed online in a single word: "snore".

Philip Green, Topshop's billionaire owner, has paid Moss a reported STG3 million ($A7.24 million) to design clothes for his stores, which have won a reputation for putting high fashion on the high street but at affordable prices.

A crowd of several hundred people, and dozens of cameramen and photographers, outside the flagship store in London late on Monday for the Moss launch was evidence of her popularity.

One of the world's most photographed women, she has been credited with inspiring fashion crazes like skinny jeans.

Scandals involving allegations of drug abuse and her relationship with troubled rock singer Pete Doherty appear to have helped her career rather than hindered it.

"She's got a really cool look, and she is also from southeast London so we can relate to her," said Daisy Taylor, a 15-year-old who came straight from school to join the queue snaking around Topshop on Monday evening.

For the less motivated shopper, eBay offers an alternative.

Early on Tuesday dozens of items from Moss's new range were on sale, including a pansy print dress which had attracted 21 bids of up to 101.50 pounds, more than twice its retail price.
