Weight loss, in the context of medicine or health, is a reduction of the total body weight, which can mean loss of fluid, muscle, bone mass, or fat.

The loss of weight associated with a chronic illness is referred to as cachexia. Unexpected, unintentional weight loss is a common symptom of illness and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Poor management of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (IDDM) can be a cause of significant weight loss. Lack of insulin triggers the release of fatty acids into blood from adipose tissue, as well as the release of protein from muscle tissue. This causes a reduction in both lean tissue and fatty tissue mass. Also of interest is to consider the weight loss as a product of the energy imbalance, because much biochemical energy is lost in the urine due to the excretion of glucose (glycosuria) and ketone bodies.

Medications, lack of fluid intake, or illnesses such as diabetes can trigger fluid loss.

Infections such as HIV may alter metabolism, leading to weight loss.

Hormonal disruptions, such as an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) may also exhibit as weight loss.

Weight loss may refer to the loss of total body mass in an effort to improve fitness, health, and/or appearance.

Therapeutic weight loss, in individuals who are overweight, can decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as diabetes. Overweight and obese individuals are also at greater risk of health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis. For healthy weight loss, a physician should be consulted to develop a weight loss plan that is tailored to the individual.

Weight loss occurs when an individual is in a state of negative energy balance. When the human body is losing more chemical energy in work and heat than it is gaining from food or other nutritional supplements, it will catabolise stored reserves (or fat) inside the body.

It is not uncommon for people who are already at a medically healthy weight to intentionally lose weight. In some cases it is with the goal of improving athletic performance or to meet weight classifications in a sport. In other cases, the goal is to attain a more attractively shaped body. Being underweight is associated with health risks. Health problems can include fighting off infection, osteoporosis, decreased muscle strength, trouble regulating body temperature and even increased risk of death.

The least intrusive weight loss methods, and those most often recommended by physicians, are adjustments to eating patterns and increased physical exercise.

Usually, health professionals will recommend that their overweight patients combine a reduction of the caloric content of the diet, with an increase in physical activity.

Raw vegetables are low in calories and high in nutrient density. Eating high quantities in blended or liquid form is a way to consume fewer calories and enjoy a feeling of satisfaction as body cells receive the nutrients they need.

Other methods of losing weight include use of drugs and supplements that decrease appetite, block fat absorption, or reduce stomach volume. Surgery is another method. Bariatric surgery artificially reduces the size of the stomach, limiting the intake of food energy.

Some of these treatments may have serious side-effects.

There is a huge market for products which promise to make weight loss easier, quicker, cheaper, more reliable, or less painful. These include books, CDs, and other materials, fitness centers, personal coaches, weight loss groups, and food products and supplements. Americans spend an estimated $30 billion a year on all types of diet programs and products, including diet foods and drinks.

When I was about 16/17 I used to run for about 30 mins a day on the treadmill (Not because I'm fat or anything - but because I'm very health conscious).

6 years down the line and im 22. I havent done much exercise recently (or at all!) but my body has stayed in shape. (Mesle khar ghaza mikhoram va ASLAN chaagh namisham! I have a flat stomach and fat in the right places) - Doing all that exercise boosted my metabolism.

Another good thing to boost your metabolism is to squeeze some lemon into a cup of warm water and drink that in the mornings. Ladies - I highly recommend it! not only does your skin get better but your body stays in shape. You'll thank me for this :-P ;)

Thats right, lemons because of their acidity boost your metabolism...The mechanism behind it is pretty cool! Of course you could do this with vinegar as well (great for salads you have with meals) but lemons do taste better! & obviously excercise in general is the number one metabolism booster!

Lose Weight
This review may help you lose weight. Please consider reading and following these steps...

Steps

Set goals. You'll be better able to make a realistic weight loss plan if you know how much weight you want to lose.

Identify your weaknesses. Are you a bread fiend? Do you have dessert after every meal and every snack? Is Mcdonalds your second home? Find the weakness and throttle it. It does not own you, you are stronger and cooler than to allow some silly little craving to knock you off your path.

Throw away anything you know is tempting. Those cinnamon buns with 500 calories each? Gone. The ramen noodles in your cabinet? Gone. The problem is that this is not always feasible. Often times we are not the only ones in our homes and therefore the call of the food must be withstood. In this case, out of sight truly is out of mind. Put unhealthy, unfilling foods in a drawer or in a cabinet that you rarely use. Put them all together to make a particularly unappetizing sight. Don't place them all in a decorative basket out on the counter. Place them in a drawer. A drawer heaping with pastries rarely looks like anything but a drawer of fat.

Eat less, but eat more often. If possible, eat 4-5 meals a day. This helps your metabolism and blood sugar to stay level as well. This does require a change in your schedule. Eat less within 6 hours of your bed time. You're less likely to burn the calories closer to your bed time. It's fine to eat a large breakfast and lunch because your body will be working on burning those calories for the whole day. Large dinners are likely to go unburned and converted into fat.

Do not skip breakfast. If you don't have time to prepare breakfast, buy healthy breakfast bars or those smoothies on the go. It is important to eat breakfast to jump start your metabolism and give you energy for the day. Otherwise you will probably end up falling back on unhealthy foods during the day.

Eat healthy snacks when you feel hungry between meal times. Healthy snacks would be things high in fiber, fruits and vegetables. Avoid high sugar and high calorie snacks. This will help you get nutrients as well as help lower your appetite so you won't overeat during meals.

Increase your fiber intake. Fiber acts as negative calories. It's also filling and healthy for your digestive system. Make it a part of every meal.

Eat slowly and chew more. Take time to enjoy your meals. This will help you to finish at the same time as others, and you'll not be tempted by a second helping. Also, chewing more will ensure you get the most out of all the food and it will be digested faster. The more you chew, the more your appetite will be satiated.

Drink more water every day. Stay hydrated. While you don't need 8 cups of water a day to stay hydrated, it'll make sure you're hydrated as well as cut down on your hunger levels and force you to get a little bit more exercise (trips to the sink, water cooler, water fountain, and bathroom). If you're a heavy soda drinker, permit yourself to only one diet soda per day, maximum. Just one extra soda each day can add 15 pounds. Recently, fizzy drinks, even diet ones, have been said to slow down metabolism.

Increase physical activity. There are two ways to reduce net caloric intake: 1) reduce the number of calories in your diet and 2) Increase the number of calories that you burn in your daily activities. Both approaches are usually necessary and healthful and both are effective in losing weight. You can pick and choose which exercise you want to do, depending on your fitness level and drive. For example: walking, jogging, using the stair stepper, using cross training machines, swimming, tennis, and basketball. Weight training (and resistance training) can help reshape your body. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will be.

Find active friends. Find people that will drag you out to do more active things. It doesn't have to be much, but any exercise even walking around the mall is better than none.

Don't get discouraged. After one or two weeks of initial weight loss, it is quite common for your metabolism to slow down as it adjusts to the new calorie count. Stay on course and you'll see results. In some cases, the scale will tell you your weight is barely changing, but you may be gaining muscle weight while losing fat weight. Also make sure to weigh yourself first thing in the morning to try to avoid the fluctuations in weight due to water.

Take all advice with a grain of salt. Everyone is going to have some tidbit of information for you. What worked for them might not work for you. Take it all in stride and work with what is getting results for you. Trying to do everything everyone says will only cause overload.

Tips

Don't go on one of those "fad" diets. Losing too much weight too quickly can lead to health problems. All the weight lost from most fad diets will return soon after you transition off of them.

Allow yourself to cheat depending on your will power. If you don't have the will power, allow yourself the treats like dessert and a little ice cream. Many people when they try to avoid comfort foods altogether, find themselves binging on those very foods. If you have a very strong will, you will not need to cheat at all. If you have a very fragile will, you'll likely cheat often. Just make sure as you progress, the "cheating" becomes less and less.

Leave left overs when dining out. If you find yourself overeating at restaurants, train yourself to always leave half of the food on your plate. Bring it home for later. Don't feel compelled to eat it all in one sitting since it's usually way too much food for one meal. Or just box it.

You will never lose weight and keep it off unless you manage to incorporate these tips permanently. Applying these tips for a short time is useless in the long term. Realize that this is for the long term. Take as much time as you need easing yourself into it.

Once you have a routine, it's easy to maintain. For example, start exercising once a week NEVER missing a single session. Once that becomes routine, it should be easy to sneak in another day of exercise and slowly have that become routine too If you have unhealthy snacks you're likely to munch on them. Get rid of that temptation. A lot of people will just grab something and munch on it without even realizing what they're doing.

Keep in mind that a 3500 calorie deficit will result in the loss of one pound. You can use this figure to decide how many calories to cut back each day to result in the weight loss you want to achieve in a certain period of time.
If you are engaging in an activity that you usually snack during, find something to do with your hands instead of eating. Take up knitting, learn to sew, write those thank-you cards, anything to keep you from munching mindlessly while you watch tv, etc.

Take a multivitamin. The more good things you put into your body, the more small steps you take to filling yourself with nutrients the better you will feel and look.

Warnings

Lose weight safely. When losing weight you have to pace yourself or risk damaging your health. Losing more than one pound per week is likely to adversely affect your body and you will probably just experience a yoyo effect.

Ask your doctor for advice. They can give you dietary advice as well as discuss any physical problems you may or may not have while exercising. If you're planning to take weight loss very seriously, ask your doctor if there will be any complications.

Some medications cause weight gain and make it very hard to lose weight. This is not an excuse to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Even if you will never be able to lose the weight your medication put on, you will still be better off to get more active and eat better. And you might be surprised at your results.
Most work out devices will essentially do what any "free" exercise can do. The only difference is you pay hundreds of dollars.

Even a healthy meal can be turned unhealthy with chips or fries and a drink. Just ask for water.

Swim 2 hours per week, run 10 mins per day and say goodbye to the fat. I used to be very fit, though since i became a student i put on abit of weight due to my consistent fish and chips, kfc, Mcdonalds and pizza hut diet... Though i like, emm no love being abit chubby, others may dislike their bodies in the same shape. I personally think men rather be bulky than thin.

youve gotta do everything in moderation.

"You're down a pound and a quarter. Yeah!!"

Those words of joy are an example of what hundreds of people in Hampton Roads were looking for when they joined Weight Loss Forever. But even the small step of progress in Chris Yaeckel's journey is clouded by a major set back.

Yaeckel told WAVY.com, "I went to the clinic to get weighed Monday. It had a sign up there, it had a phone number. I tried to call the number, it's not working."

The story is the same for many of Weight Loss Forever clients. WAVY.com discovered the buildings are closed - and empty.

Debbie Klink once volunteered to be a spokeswoman for the company. She lost 40 pounds and was enrolled in a maintenance program. Klink told WAVY.com she tried to find answers before calling 10 On Your Side.

"I've tried to contact the owner, there is no answer. I even left a voicemail and she has not gotten back to me," she said.

Klink's friend Lynn Reeder started the program this summer, after seeing Klink's success. Now they share frustrations.

Reeder said, "We want to be compensated since we trusted them and paid all this money - and now, just no notice, nothing."

WAVY.com went to the Weight Loss Forever corporate office in Virginia Beach.

No one was there, but a Sheriff's Deputy had been; a notice was posted on the door that legal action had been taken against the corporation. According to court records, the legal action was for an unpaid judgment against the company that originated in Charlottesville, Virginia.

WAVY.com researched the business through the State Corporation Commission. The SCC lists Beverly Turner and Brian Stimmel as principal officers of the company that runs Weight Loss Forever. But we were unable to reach them.

The lack of contact with the owners is frustrating for their clients who have now lost more than they ever bargained for.

Klink is still owed nearly a year of counseling and products. "I was charged approximately 27-hundred dollars," she said.

Yaeckel just started the program and paid, "Two thousand and maybe two hundred dollars."

In one month Yaeckel has lost 10 pounds and told WAVY.com she isn't willing to give up. She found some help at a clinic in Chesapeake that used to be a part of the Weight Loss Forever group.

While WAVY.com was at the clinic in the Crossways Shopping Center in Chesapeake, owner Amy Zablan answered phone calls from upset Weight Loss Forever clients.

"I don't want you to be discouraged. I know you are discouraged," she said over the phone.

About a month ago, Zablan separated herself from Weight Loss Forever's owners. She declined to go into details about her decision, but said she already owned the Greenbrier location and wanted to do it without the Weight Loss Forever partnership. So Zablan's business is called Weight Loss Now. It's an independent company, that's still operating.

"I know they're in pain. There's a financial side to that and an emotional side to that," Zablan said.

She's offering to give displaced clients 10 free weeks of counseling and a discount on supplements. The address for Weight Loss Now is 1600 Crossways Blvd. in Chesapeake.

"Come in and continue to be accountable. Accountability is so important. I don't want to see them gain the weight back," Zablan offered.

WAVY.com contacted Virginia Consumer Affairs, and representatives are looking into the situation.

Weight Loss Forever clients can file complaints by calling 1-800-552-9963. Customers who paid for the program in Virginia Beach, can call that local office at 385-5836.

One client told WAVY.com she's contacted her credit card company. Her company was willing to suspend payments while the case is investigated.
