  • German caricature pictures Iranian players as terrorists

PFDC - BERLIN, A caricature of Iranian players' carrying explosives was published in Berlin based newspaper "Tagesspiegel" on Friday.

Caricaturist Klaus Stuttmann drew the picture showing the Iranian football players with bomb-belts and German soldiers beside them. "Why the German Bundeswehr (army) has to be in action at the World Cup!!" was added as text.

The caricature is targeted at the discussion about if the German army should be involved in the security matters at the World Cup.

Although Klaus Stuttmann intentions seem to be making fun of the idea of involving the German army in the World Cup, he insults the players of the Iranian national team, of which many play or played in Germany, by picturing them as terrorists.

If you feel the urge to voice your concern, mail to Klaus Stuttmann (info@stuttmann-karikaturen.de) and the "Tagesspiegel" (redaktion@tagesspiegel.de).

BERLIN, 'Tagesspiegel' Managing Editor Thomas Wurster responded to the critisizm on the published cartoon which had pictured Iranian football players as terrorists in a written statement. Wurster points out there has been no intention to insult Iran's football team.

Drawer Klaus Stuttmann meanwhile apologized to the Iranian national team an it's fans on his homepage, should he have insulted anyone by his caricature and announced that he in no way intended to label the Iranian football team as terrorists. His targets rather were to visualize the absurdity of relying on the German army's services during the World Cup, as it had been proposed by some German politicians.

Below comes the statement from the 'Tagesspiegel':

"As far as the criticism of the cartoon is concerned we believe that Mr. Stuttmann has been gravely misunderstood. As a matter of fact the cartoon doesn't poke fun at the Iranian Football team but at German Minister of Defense Franz Josef Jung who announced the day before the cartoon has been printed that the German Army is going to help to secure the German stadiums at the World Championship of 2006. Mr. Stuttmann's cartoon thus criticizes what in his view is a huge exaggeration by the government of the threats that come along with the World Championship.

Everybody knows that the Iranian team won't enter the stadium equipped with suicide belts. The scene depicted, with the Bundeswehr lining up to play soccer against Iran, is so surreal that it raises the question if the German government's threat perception and the use of the German Army, which according to our constitution should be employed internally only in very few cases, are really appropriate. So as Mr. Stuttmann points out also on his homepage, the aim of his cartoon was to criticize the German government and he apologizes for the fact that the cartoon has been understood by some in a different manner.

It is definitely not in the tradition of the Tagesspiegel to engage in any kind of discrimination, be it based on gender, religion, ethnicity or nationality. We think that only somebody who is not familiar with the news background of Mr. Stuttmann's cartoon and with the tradition of the Tagesspiegel could have misunderstood the content of Mr. Stuttmann's cartoon as being discriminatory against the Iranian Football team."

Reuters - The Iranian embassy in Germany has demanded a written apology from a Berlin newspaper that printed a cartoon of Iranian soccer players dressed as suicide bombers and threatened legal action if none is forthcoming.

The sketch, published on Friday by Der Tagesspiegel, shows four moustachioed soccer players wearing Iran shirts with explosives strapped to their chests next to four German soldiers in a soccer stadium.

A caption above read: "Why the German army should definitely be used during the soccer World Cup!", referring to a debate in Germany about whether to use troops to help with security during the month-long tournament which begins June 9.

Stephan-Andreas Casdorff, the daily's managing editor, said on Monday he regretted the reaction to the drawing but did not consider an apology necessary.

The cartoon's artist had received three death threats and had been forced to leave his apartment, he said, adding that the police was investigating the threats.

In a letter to Der Tagesspiegel seen by Reuters on Monday, the Iranian embassy in Berlin said the cartoon was offensive and accused the paper of using sport to make a political point in an "irresponsible and immoral way".

A German newspaper yesterday published a cartoon depicting the Iranian football team dressed as suicide bombers, opening up a new front in the row over caricatures of the prophet Muhammad.
Iran immediately demanded an apology from Der Tagesspiegel, which showed four Iranian players at this summer's World Cup in Germany with explosives attached to their chests. A caption read: "Why the German army should definitely be used during the football World Cup." The general secretary of Iran's sports press association yesterday described the latest caricature as a "black joke". The Iranian embassy in Berlin called for an apology, saying the cartoon was "an immoral act".
