LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It used to be that no one messed with Tom Cruise. Now the media are having a field day. Why are they beating up on him? Because they can.

The energetic superstar used to be invulnerable. He was represented by Hollywood's most powerful talent firm, Creative Artists Agency. His production company, headed by ex-CAA agent Paula Wagner, is housed at Paramount Pictures, where studio chief Sherry Lansing would lavish her biggest budgets on his movies. He was married to Nicole Kidman, one of Hollywood's smartest actresses. And his press was handled by the head of Hollywood's most powerful PR firm, PMK-HBH's Pat Kingsley, who kept the press from talking about Scientology.

Anyone who has ever dealt with Kingsley knows that going up against her takes guts and the full backing of your organization. That's because she's willing to use her entire arsenal to protect her most powerful clients. With the bat of an eyelash, she'd withdraw the cooperation of her agency's other stars, refuse to cooperate on other stories or ban a publication from getting another star interview. (It took Premiere magazine several years to work itself back into her good graces after one tough "Mission: Impossible 2" story.)

Kingsley controlled the select magazine covers Cruise would do for each picture, the friendly interviewers he was most comfortable with, the photographers who shot him to look his best. Knowing that he didn't have much to say, she controlled his image, preserving his mystique as a movie star. Her PR philosophy has always been, "Less is more." Keep the fans guessing. Hold the star in abeyance. Keep everyone lining up clamoring for more.

So what changed? As Cruise heads toward 43, he's getting to that age when a star is not always sure what his appeal is. His domestic box office numbers have been down, masked by continuing strong foreign box office appeal. And he remains such a powerful client -- representing so many millions of dollars a year -- that CAA can't say no to him. Still, Paramount, which is now in transition under new chairman Brad Grey, refused to greenlight "Mission: Impossible 3" until it could bring down the budget -- and Cruise's share of the first-dollar grosses -- to a level that would permit the studio to make some of its considerable outlay back. (Everyone knows that Steven Spielberg and Cruise will take home the lion's share of the grosses on Paramount/DreamWorks' upcoming "War of the Worlds." That's a loss leader, a given.)

Cruise and Pitt have much in common. They're both charismatic 40ish movie stars at the top of their game with a bigger following overseas than domestic and a predominantly female fan base. They can cherry-pick the best projects and directors. (As his three Oscar nominations attest, Cruise boasts a better rep as an actor.) They're both in recovery from busted marriages to famous actresses -- Pitt to Jennifer Aniston and Cruise to Kidman -- which always is a sensitive time for a male movie star. Kevin Costner's career, for one, never fully bounced back from fan backlash after he left his wife and broke up the family.

The question is, will all the bad publicity adversely affect Cruise's career? Although Cruise has not been promoting "War of the Worlds" effectively, the Spielberg/H.G. Wells/Cruise combo is not likely to be negatively impacted by its star's PR debacle. But "M:I-3," where Cruise controls a budget that could approach $200 million, is a different story.

Paramount sources say Grey is gravely concerned about the fate of this franchise. According to Paramount insiders, Grey insisted on cutting the budget and building in some protection against budget overruns. Cruise also trimmed his hefty profit-sharing arrangement.

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Basking in the jurors' decision to acquit his client of all counts, Michael Jackson's lawyer said Tuesday the singer will no longer share his bed with young boys.

He's not going to do that anymore," attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr. told NBC's "Today." "He's not going to make himself vulnerable to this anymore."

Jackson was found not guilty Monday of child molestation, conspiracy and other counts. Jurors said the accusations of a young boy and his family were not credible — a total legal victory that triggered jubilation among the pop star's fans and embarrassment for the district attorney's office.

But Mesereau said the singer was still recovering from the ordeal.

"He's going to take it one day at a time. It's been a terrible, terrible process for him," Mesereau said Tuesday.

A raucous welcome greeted Jackson as he returned to his Neverland Ranch on Monday afternoon. As a convoy of black SUVs carrying him and his entourage pulled through the gates, his sister LaToya rolled down a window, smiled widely and waved. The crowd responded with a euphoric cheer.

"All of us here and millions around the world love and support you," proclaimed a banner strung across a fence by the compound in Los Olivos that Jackson said he created to provide himself with the childhood he never enjoyed.

"It's victory," said Tracee Raynaud, 39. "God is alive and well."

There was no comment from Jackson or his family Tuesday. He has no media representative since Raymone K. Bain was dismissed last week, and neither he nor his family issued any statements Tuesday morning.

TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - Canadian music retailer HMV Canada on Monday pulled all of Alanis Morissette's albums from its shelves in protest at her exclusive agreement to sell an acoustic version of her 1995 hit album "Jagged Little Pill" in North American Starbuck stores for six weeks.

Toronto-based HMV Canada was not available for comment. But rival music retailers have recently voiced concern that they have long sold Ottawa-born Morissette's music and helped make her career. After the six-week period, beginning June 13, the album will go on sale at traditional retailers.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey reigns supreme among celebrities, according to Forbes magazine's power rankings of the top 100 celebrities released on Thursday.

Winfrey moved up from No. 3 in 2004 to supplant "Passion of the Christ" director Mel Gibson at the top of the list. Golf star Tiger Woods held on to his runner-up position and Gibson slid into third place.

The Forbes power rankings give the most weight to a celebrity's earnings over the past 12 months but also factor in popularity standards including Internet presence, press clippings, magazine cover stories and mentions on TV and radio, Forbes said.

Winfrey, who draws 30 million viewers weekly in the United States and whose talk show reaches 112 countries, raked in $225 million to rank second in celebrity riches.

Gibson, buoyed by DVD sales of "Passion," earned $185 million, while Woods made $87 million from his golf and endorsement deals.

George Lucas, director/producer of the "Star Wars" movies, was fourth on the power list and topped the money table with $290 million made over the past 12 months.

Rounding out the top 10 were basketball star Shaquille O'Neal in fifth place, followed by film director/producer Steven Spielberg, actor Johnny Depp, pop music stars Madonna and Elton John and actor Tom Cruise.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Imprisoned celebrity sleuth Anthony Pellicano was charged on Friday with threatening a Los Angeles Times reporter three years ago to keep her from pursuing a story about action movie star Steven Seagal.

The criminal complaint charging Pellicano and an associate was brought a week after a U.S. appeals court ruled prosecutors were free to use evidence seized by authorities during a search of his West Hollywood office in 2002.

A private eye for more than two decades, Pellicano, 61, is serving a 30-month federal prison term for his conviction on charges of keeping unregistered firearms, grenades and plastic explosives in his office safe.

Pellicano, a self-described "sin eater" for celebrities he was hired to keep out of the press, worked for such stars as Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner and some of the biggest lawyers in the entertainment industry.

The investigation of Pellicano was triggered by reports in 2002 that he had tried to intimidate reporter Anita Busch, then working for the Los Angeles Times, to keep her from working on stories about a suspected Mafia extortion plot against Seagal.

FBI agents found the explosives and large volumes of wiretap transcripts while searching his office for evidence, leading to his guilty plea on felony weapons charges in October 2003.

In the latest case, brought by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, Pellicano is charged with making criminal threats against Busch, and with conspiring with Alexander Proctor, the man he is accused of hiring to carry out those threats.

ROUBAIX, France - Robert De Niro got choked up at an exhibit of paintings by his father in northeastern France.

"This is a magnificent exhibit," said De Niro, whose father, Robert De Niro Sr., passed away more than a decade ago.

"I'm sad that my father is not here," De Niro said Saturday, dabbing his eyes.

The 56-painting exhibit, in the recently opened La Piscine Museum in the town of Roubaix, is the first European retrospective of the elder De Niro's paintings. Hundreds gathered outside the museum, housed in a renovated Art Deco poolhouse, hoping to spot the actor.

In the 60s, the elder De Niro spent several years living in France, studying Matisse, Manet, Gaugin, Bonnard and other painters who influenced his work.

"He said that painting is love and sensuality. He expressed these feelings with color," said art critic Valere Bertrand, who attended the opening.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A homeless man, who believed he had been sent by God to pray with "The Passion of the Christ" director Mel Gibson, was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday for stalking.

Zack Sinclair, 35, was recommended for psychiatric treatment as part of his prison term. The Idaho man began writing to Gibson after the release last year of "The Passion of the Christ" and later turned up at Gibson's Malibu mansion and at a church that he attends.

Gibson was not in court for the sentencing but he testified at Sinclair's trial in March that he was both worried about his family's safety and concerned for Sinclair's mental health.

Sinclair wrote 12 letters to Gibson saying he wanted to strengthen the actor-director's faith.

"I realized we were probably dealing with someone fairly deluded," Gibson told the Los Angeles court in March.

Gibson said that at one point, Sinclair approached him at his church and put his face within four inches (10 cm) of the actor, asking him to pray.

Sinclair, who represented himself at trial, was convicted of stalking in March and said nothing on Wednesday before being given the maximum sentence permitted under California law.

Brad Pitt signs Paramount production deal

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Brad Pitt is reuniting with his former manager who is now running Paramount Pictures.

Plan B, the production company co-founded by the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" star, has entered into a first-look deal with the Hollywood studio.

The deal was announced Wednesday by Brad Grey, the chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. As Pitt's manager at Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, he was a partner in Plan B, along with Pitt and the actor's wife, Jennifer Aniston.

The actress, who filed for divorce from Pitt in March, is no longer a partner but will continue to be involved in projects set up when Plan B was based at Warner Bros.

Effective immediately, the three-year agreement gives Paramount an exclusive first-look opportunity to produce movies developed at Plan B.

Grey said he began thinking of bringing Plan B to Paramount as soon as he was made chairman of the studio in January. Grey announced Paramount's first Pitt movie under his tenure, "Babel," within hours of starting at the studio.

Plan B already has several projects in development at Paramount, including "True Story" and "Glass Castle." "True Story," from the book by former New York Times reporter Michael Finkel, is based on the true events of his life that unfolded after a murder suspect stole his identity. The film will be directed by Kevin MacDonald ("Touching the Void").

"Glass Castle," based on the memoir of gossip columnist Jeanette Walls, centers on a woman who must come to terms with her homeless upbringing.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In his first public statement since being acquitted of child sex abuse charges, Michael Jackson thanked his fans for the love and support he said "dried my tears" during the four-month trial.

In a statement posted on his Web site (www.mjjsource.com) on Sunday, Jackson said he could not have made it through "without God, my children, my family and you, my fans."

"You were there when I really needed you. I will never forget you. Your ever-present love held me, dried my tears, and carried me through," he said in the statement, which was signed "love, Michael Jackson."

Jackson, 46, was cleared two weeks ago of all charges in the sex abuse trial that had threatened to destroy his career and send him to prison for nearly two decades.

He had been charged with 10 counts of lewd acts with a child, giving a minor alcohol and conspiring to commit child abduction, extortion and false imprisonment.

Hundreds of fans had camped outside the Santa Maria, California, courthouse to show their support for the entertainer during the trial. The verdict, which was broadcast around the world, triggered a frenzy of relief and excitement among them.

"I will treasure your devotion and support forever. You are my inspiration," Jackson said.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Tom Cruise not only battles creatures from outer space in his latest film "War of the Worlds," he also believes aliens exist, he told a German newspaper on Wednesday.

Asked in an interview with the tabloid daily Bild if he believed in aliens, Cruise said: "Yes, of course. Are you really so arrogant as to believe we are alone in this universe?

"Millions of stars, and we're supposed to be the only living creatures? No, there are many things out there, we just don't know," Cruise, 42, said in the interview published in German.

Cruise is a follower of the Scientology church founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, and his recent willingness to discuss the faith has raised eyebrows in the media.

Most controversially, Cruise criticized actress Brooke Shields for revealing she had taken antidepressants. An official Scientology Web site argues that people should live drug-free.

Cruise also dismissed psychiatry as a "pseudo science," invoking the ire of the American Psychiatric Association that called the remarks "irresponsible."

But many scientologists feel they are unfairly criticized, arguing that although many believe in the concept of aliens, it is not such an unreasonable proposition, and that the side effects of some medication are not fully understood.

Cruise's new film "War of the Worlds" is based on British writer H.G. Wells' 1898 story of the invasion of Earth by Martians

Angelina Jolie Adopting Ethiopian Girl

Angelina Jolie who has been romantically linked with her "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" co-star Brad Pitt, is adopting an orphaned Ethiopian baby girl.

Jolie visited the Horn of Africa nation last week to file her adoption request, accompanied by Pitt and her 3-year-old son, Maddox, whom she adopted in Cambodia, an official said Wednesday.

"The paperwork has gone through. Miss Angelina's request was accepted last week," Hadosh Halefom, head of the country's state-run adoption agency, told The Associated Press.

The child "is less than a year old," Hadosh said, refusing to elaborate. The actress filed her request through a private adoption agency.

"If people's paperwork is in order, it can take only two days to finalize everything," Hadosh said.

In a posting on People magazine's Web site, Jolie is quoted as saying the child's name is Zahara Marley Jolie and that she and Maddox are "very happy to have a new addition to our family."

The twice-divorced Jolie has often talked of adopting a second child.

LOS ANGELES - Rock singer Courtney Love was taken by ambulance to a Los Angeles hospital Thursday after complaining of feeling faint, but she was discharged soon after, her spokeswoman said.

Love, 41, was attending an entertainment industry gathering at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Wednesday night when she felt ill, publicist Jill Fritzo said in an e-mail message.

"She was at a party, felt faint, went out for air, a friend called an ambulance for precaution, they took her to the hospital and she was released immediately," Fritzo said.

A Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman said officers called to the Roosevelt shortly past midnight took a crime report under the name of "Courtney L," but she declined to give further details, saying the report was confidential.

A city fire department spokeswoman, Melissa Kelly, said fire personnel responded to a drug overdose call at the Roosevelt at one minute after midnight and transported someone to the hospital.

Kelly said her records did not indicate who the victim was. She added city police were routinely notified of any drug overdose reported to the fire department.

Word of the incident surfaced a day before a hearing was scheduled in Los Angeles Superior Court for a report on Love's status in a court-ordered drug treatment program.

Michael Jackson went to hospital suffering from dehydration and weight loss after jurors acquitted the singer of child molestation last month, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

"Michael Jackson was ill from time to time. In fact, people didn't realize he actually entered the hospital after the verdict," Jackson's lawyer Tom Mesereau told BBC radio in an interview.

"He was dehydrated, he had lost a tremendous amount of weight, he was having trouble keeping food down, he was terrified about what was going happen to his children and he had a recurring back problem," he added.

The child star turned superstar, whose "Thriller" album made him one of the world's best known entertainers, was visibly weak at the end of his four-month trial and his family said he had gone to bed after the verdict.

Mesereau said he had not spoken to Jackson in the last few weeks although the two had been in touch after the trial.

Jackson was acquitted last month of molesting a 13-year-old boy in 2003 as well as plying him with alcohol and conspiring to abduct the boy.

The singer faced nearly 20 years in prison if convicted.

Although cleared, music industry experts have questioned how the formerly unstoppable superstar can rebuild his career and work his way out of deep debt.

Mesereau insisted Jackson would not settle out of court if further allegations were made against him.

Man guilty in Diaz topless case

A photographer accused of forging the signature of actress Cameron Diaz to try to sell topless photos of her has been convicted in the US.

John Rutter, 42, could be jailed for up to six years after being found guilty in a Los Angeles court of forgery, attempted grand theft and perjury.

He took pictures of Ms Diaz when she was an unknown teenage model.

In 2003, he tried to sell the photos back to her for $3.5m (£2m), presenting her with a forged model release form.

Rutter told the actress he was giving her "first refusal" to buy the photos taken 11 years earlier. If she did not pay up, he said he would offer the photos for sale worldwide.

Ms Diaz told the court that the photographer told her the buyers were going to put the pictures in magazine spreads and on buses and advertising boards.

The actress contacted the authorities, who arrested Rutter after a sting operation.

Aniston still loves Pitt, denies split over kids

NEW YORK - Actress Jennifer Aniston still loves estranged husband Brad Pitt and denies gossip column speculation that the pair split because she did not want to have children, according to a magazine interview.

"I love Brad; I really love him. I will love him for the rest of my life," Aniston told Vanity Fair in an interview in the magazine's September issue.

Tabloid speculation has swirled for months that Pitt, 41, the star of "Ocean's Eleven" and "Troy," and Angelina Jolie, 30, have been romantically involved since filming "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" last year. In May, Jolie denied those rumors.

Much of the tabloid coverage suggested that Aniston, 36, and Pitt broke up over disputes about starting a family.

"I've never in my life said I didn't want to have children," she said of those reports.

The actress best known as "Rachel" from the television sitcom "Friends" said she was upset over the pictures of Pitt and Jolie, which have dominated tabloids for months. "I would be a robot if I said I didn't feel moments of anger, of hurt, of embarrassment," she said.

Aniston filed for divorce in March from Pitt after separating earlier in the year. But Aniston said she has not lost faith in the notion of marriage.

"In five years I would hope to be married and have a kid. I still believe in marriage 100 percent," Aniston said.

Jimi Hendrix played gay to leave Army -book

NEW YORK - Jimi Hendrix, regarded as one of the greatest electric guitar players and known as a prodigious womanizer, lied about being gay to get out of the U.S. Army and pursue his true love -- music, according to a new biography of the rock legend.

"Room Full of Mirrors," written by Charles Cross and published by Hyperion, recounts the life of Hendrix, from a troubled childhood in a black Seattle neighborhood, to brushes with the law and a fast climb to the top of the rock world with hits such as "Purple Haze," and "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary."

"It's almost hard to believe what a big, colorful life he led," said Cross, who interviewed more than 300 people for the book, which goes on sale on Wednesday.

Hendrix did not begin playing guitar until he was 15. Three years later, Hendrix enlisted in the 101st Airborne Division in 1961 as a court-offered alternative to jail for riding in stolen cars.

He claimed he was discharged after 13 months after breaking his ankle in a parachuting drill, but military records showed he was discharged for "homosexual tendencies."

According to the records, he told the base psychiatrist he had sexual fantasies about his bunkmates, grew addicted to masturbating and was in love with a member of his squad, Cross writes.

"He wanted to get out," Cross said in an interview. "Music just had become his calling."

Hendrix's career picked up speed after he left Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He began touring the South with a band and played back-up for headliners like Otis Redding, the Isley Brothers and Little Richard on the so-called 'Chitlin' Circuit.'

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Marilyn Monroe adored fellow screen legend Clark Gable as a father figure, fretted over a relationship with then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and had a one-night stand with actress Joan Crawford that left her cold.

Monroe also thought sex with former spouse and playwright Arthur Miller was just "so-so" and maintained a deep affection for ex-husband Joe DiMaggio. But she credited her psychiatrist with teaching her how to achieve orgasm.

The Los Angeles Times revealed these and other glimpses into Monroe's mind on Friday in excerpts of tape recordings the sex symbol and actress is said to have secretly made for her psychiatrist in the days before she died at the age of 36 in 1962.

The Times said it obtained a written record of the tapes from the only person still alive who claims to have heard them -- former prosecutor John Miner, 86, who says the recordings support his belief Monroe was a victim of foul play.

Miner took "extensive" and "nearly verbatim" notes from the tapes when they were played for him by Monroe's therapist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, now deceased, while Miner was investigating her death.

Monroe's nude body was found on Aug. 5, 1962, in her Los Angeles home. An autopsy concluded she died of barbiturate poisoning, and the death was ruled a probable suicide.

Conspiracy theories abounded for decades suggesting Monroe was murdered. Prosecutors reexamined the case in 1982 but decided there was insufficient evidence to warrant a new criminal investigation.

The Times story was published as dozens of fans gathered, as they have for decades, near Monroe's burial site to mark the anniversary of her death and the unanswered questions surrounding it.

"She was enormously desirable and enormously vulnerable," said Stanley Rubin, who produced the 1954 film "River of No Return," starring Monroe and Robert Mitchum.

Miner told the Times he examined the tapes in a bid to determine Monroe's state of mind and came away believing the recordings showed the actress was anything but suicidal.

According to excerpts, Monroe started off the recording -- a kind of self-analysis through free association -- by thanking her doctor for helping her regain "control of myself, control of my life."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rapper 50 Cent's autobiography is a modern-day version of living the American Dream -- get your start by selling crack cocaine, make your escape through hip-hop music, and once you've made it big, peddle sneakers.

His book "From Pieces to Weight" hits the shelves on Tuesday, and fans were lining up at a New York record store for autographed copies from the 30-year-old whose 2003 debut album "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' has sold more than 12 million copies.

50 Cent's business empire encompasses a record label, vitamin water, clothing lines, a video game and a nonprofit organization called G-Unity that aims to improve the prospects of youth in neighborhoods like the one he grew up in, Southside Jamaica in Queens, New York.

"After I got shot nine times at close range and didn't die, I started to think I must have a purpose in life," 50 Cent writes, describing a 2000 run-in with drug-dealers in Queens that left him hospitalized for 13 days.

Stone's lawyers entered the plea on his behalf at a Beverly Hills court hearing on July 29 -- two weeks ahead of the scheduled hearing date, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's office said.

Stone, 58, who won best director Oscars for the Vietnam War-themed movies "Platoon" and "Born of the Fourth of July," was charged after being stopped at a routine traffic checkpoint in May.

Stone also pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and guilty to cannabis possession in 1999 in Beverly Hills. He was given three years probation in that case.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - You could practically hear the collective gasp at the August 4 launch of the RuPaul Doll at the Arcadia Gallery in New York when singer/actor RuPaul arrived -- out of drag.

There he was, further branding his RuPaul personality with a celebrity doll line, and he showed up not as the flamboyant RuPaul but as RuPaul Andre Charles, the man under the makeup and hair.

While many were saddened that RuPaul left the heels at home that night, one could not help but smile (and giggle) at the larger-than-life photographs (taken by Mike Ruiz) on the gallery walls. They depicted the RuPaul dolls in various acts of devilish fun.

For those desiring the real thing, the three dolls in the RuPaul collection (each one represents a different stage in the artist's colorful career) also were on display.

Billed as the first transvestite fashion doll and produced by Integrity Toys, the RuPaul Doll collection will be in stores later this month. Each doll has a suggested retail price of

$59.99.

The RuPaul Doll collection was the brainchild of RuPaul and nontraditional marketing/consulting company Two Sheps That Pass. TSTP president Vera Sheps says initial inspiration came from the Cher celebrity doll. "We thought that a doll along (those lines) would be fun."

Talks with Integrity creative director/partner Jason Wu followed. The RuPaul Doll is the first venture under Integrity's new Produced by Jason Wu division.

For the first project under the new umbrella, Wu wanted a celebrity who was instantly recognizable yet not overexposed. He also did not want to follow the current teen pop star or reality show personality trend.

Singer Madonna injured in fall from horse

LONDON - Singer Madonna suffered several broken bones on Tuesday when she fell off a horse while riding at her country estate on her 47th birthday, her spokeswoman said.

"She sustained three cracked ribs, a broken collar bone and a broken hand," spokeswoman Barbara Charone said of the accident at Madonna's Ashcombe House estate.

"The star was celebrating her 47th birthday with her husband, film director Guy Ritchie and her two children, Lourdes and Rocco," Charone said in a statement released in London.

The American singer was riding with her assistant when she had the accident. Her husband rushed her to hospital.

"She was riding a new horse, not her regular horse," her New York publicist Liz Rosenberg said.

Madonna was later discharged from a hospital in Salisbury, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Madonna, whose latest album "Confessions on a Dancefloor" is due for release in November, has been an avid fan of English country life since marrying Ritchie, director of the hit London gangster movie "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."

Among the country pursuits the Material Girl superstar enjoys is clay pigeon shooting.

Bought by the celebrity couple three years ago, Ashcombe House is a six-bedroom, 18th century mansion near the picturesque village of Tollard Royal.

Tucked away in a deep chalk valley on the borders of rural Wiltshire and Dorset, it is the former home of society photographer Cecil Beaton and its pheasant and partridge shoot is considered one of the best in England.

Last year, Madonna won the right to exclude hikers from much of the nine-million-pound estate.

The singer and her husband argued that unrestricted public access would destroy their right to a private family life.

Love Admits Using Drugs; Sent to Rehab

LOS ANGELES - Courtney Love tearfully admitted using drugs in violation of her probation terms Friday. The rocker-actress was ordered into a 28-day drug treatment program by a judge who said he had wanted to put her in jail.

"I think that you need to hit rock bottom before you make a decision about what you're going to do in the future," Superior Court Judge Rand Rubin told the sobbing Love.

She was in court for allegedly being under the influence of a controlled substance, which wasn't identified.

Love's voice cracked as she said, "Yes, your honor," when asked by Rubin if she understood she was admitting to three probation violations. She is on probation in three separate cases.

The 41-year-old Love was told to enter a drug treatment facility by the end of the day. Her attorney, Howard Weitzman, wouldn't disclose the name of the facility or whether it was a lock-down program.

The judge ordered her back to court Sept. 16 for sentencing on the probation violations.

"There will be sentencing and some further consequences at that time," Rubin said. "I think you either need a long-term drug program or a long term in County Jail."

Outside court, Weitzman said Love had had a relapse but will "deal with it."

"She's serious. She's sincere. And she's pretty tenacious about getting her life in order." Weitzman said. The lawyer explained Love had violated terms of probation in one case but that "if you violate in one you violate in all."

Love, the former lead singer for the band Hole and the widow of Kurt Cobain, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge on Feb. 10. She was already on probation in two unrelated drug cases.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The mother of the teenage boy who accused Michael Jackson of sex abuse was charged with welfare fraud on Tuesday by prosecutors who say she lied about her finances when she applied for public assistance.

The woman, who was called a con artist and a welfare cheat by Jackson's attorneys as they successfully defended the pop star at his child molestation trial this summer, faces arrest if she fails to surrender by September 7, prosecutors said.

"These charges are the result of a very careful investigation of allegations that she basically lied to receive aid," Los Angeles District Attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said. "We felt the evidence was sufficient to file these counts.

The charges stem from information the mother provided to welfare officials and not her testimony at the Jackson trial, which ended when the 46-year-old entertainer was cleared by a jury in June.

Prosecutors say the mother, whose name has been withheld by most U.S. news organizations to protect her son's identity, defrauded the welfare system out some $18,000.

She could face more than five years in prison if she is convicted. Her civil attorney, William Dickerman, said he could not comment on the criminal charges and did not know if she had retained another lawyer.

She was called to the witness stand in the Jackson case by Santa Barbara County District Attorney Tom Sneddon but refused to testify about her finances or welfare applications on the grounds that doing so could incriminate her.

Jackson's lead defense attorney, Tom Mesereau said Jackson had been informed of the charges.

Actor Russell Crowe settles NY hotel assault case .

NEW YORK - Actor Russell Crowe on Thursday settled a civil lawsuit filed by the New York hotel clerk he assaulted in June with a telephone.

A statement released by both parties said the Oscar-winning actor and the Mercer Hotel employee, Nestor Estrada, had settled the case but offered few details.

"Both sides expressed satisfaction at the resolution," the joint statement said.

Local tabloids said Crowe paid about $100,000 to settle the civil lawsuit. Crowe still faces criminal charges of assault and faces up to 7 years in jail if convicted.

The incident took place shortly after 4 a.m. on June 6 when Crowe returned to the trendy SoHo hotel and became irritated when Estrada was unable to put through a call to Crowe's wife in Australia. Upset, Crowe pulled the telephone out of the wall, went to the lobby where he argued with Estrada and threw the phone at him.

The New Yorker magazine reported that Crowe was enraged because the hotel clerk dismissed his frustration by saying "whatever" -- a dismissive put-down.

Crowe, 41, is due back in court on September 14 to face criminal charges.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar winner Charlize Theron has played an astronaut's wife, a safecracker, serial killer and mine worker, but there is one off-camera role she never wants to give up -- that of a single woman.

In an interview airing on Tuesday for the syndicated TV show "Access Hollywood," the 30-year-old actress said matrimony is not for her.

"I'm happy for people who want to get married," the South African-born Theron said, but added, "It's not my thing."

The performer's comments came days after her mother, Gerda, got married again. Theron was 15 years old when her mother fatally shot her alcoholic father as he threatened the family in a drunken rage.

Although the actress sees no wedding bells in her own future, Theron said she remains committed to her boyfriend of four years, Irish actor Stuart Townsend, star of the new ABC television series "Night Stalker."

"I'm extremely happy in my relationship," she said. "I would love to have kids."

Theron, who won the Academy Award in 2004 as best actress for her role as a serial killer in "Monster," stars this month as a female miner who spearheaded one of the first major sexual harassment cases in the United States in "North Country."

Her films also include "The Astronaut's Wife," "The Cider House Rules" and "The Italian Job."

Photos of the singer and her son were posted on the internet but removed after she threatened legal action.

A statement said use of the photos would be an "invasion of privacy".

"Anyone who publishes, sells or otherwise exploits any of these images in any way will be subject to liability and damages for wilful infringement of copyright."

It is not known whether the singer has approached the police to investigate the alleged theft.

Spears has kept her son Preston - her first child - away from the glare of the world's media.

The only images of the baby have been unauthorised grainy, long-distance shots published in celebrity magazines.

The baby's father is dancer Kevin Federline, Spears' husband since September 2004.

She confirmed her pregnancy in April following months of tabloid speculation.

Federline has two children by his ex-girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson, one of which was born after he and Spears started dating.

George Clooney has denied a report that he was involved in a scuffle with a security guard outside a London bar.

The London Evening Standard claimed the actor got into a fight early on Friday morning after using the rear exit of the Meza bar to avoid photographers.

In a statement, 44-year-old Clooney said he "did not get into a fight", but was coming to the aid of a woman he believed was being mistreated.

"I won't stand by while someone is being insulted and maligned," he said.

Gala screening

The Hollywood star was in London's West End on Thursday night for a gala screening of his latest film, Good Night, And Good Luck, at the 49th London Film Festival.

The movie - Clooney's second as a director - is set during the early years of broadcast journalism in 1950s America.

A statement from his Los Angeles-based publicist, Stan Rosenfield, said the actor "did not get into a fight with a security guard", but did "get into an argument with someone connected with the movie".

"While it had nothing to do with the paparazzi, it did have everything to do with someone being unkind to a woman.

"While no punches were thrown, George told the person to knock it off," the statement added.

A spokeswoman for Meza said none of its staff were involved in an incident with Clooney, but the actor's British management had hired security guards for the reception.

The former first daughter and Marc Mezvinsky have been close since their teens, when their parents hobnobbed in D.C. (his dad is former Iowa Rep. Ed Mezvinsky), and both attended Stanford – but lately their bond has blossomed.

First spotted together at the opening of TAO Las Vegas in October, they went public with their romance recently in N.Y.C., where they went to a premiere after-party Nov. 1, cheered on marathoners Nov. 6 and snuggled at a U.N. gala Nov. 9.

A friend says Clinton, 25, who split with Ian Klaus this summer, seems "very happy." Adds another Clinton pal: "They’re best friends who fell in love."

Mezvinsky, 27, who works at Goldman Sachs, is "goofy and laid-back," says a source close to both. "He’s good for her."

Royal Romance between Prince Albert II of Monaco and Sharmine Sharivar

The German People Magazine Bunte as well as French Magazine Gala have hinted a would be romance between former political science student and Miss Europe 2005 Sharmine Sharivar.

The beauty queen born to an Iranian father and German Mother was been at the Red Cross Gala in Monaco earlier this year and was seated close to the Monaco Family during the formal dinner. She is said to have been befriended by Princess Stephanie and that she also was seen with the Prince with whom she is said to have spent three months and accompanied him on a plane to the United Nations Yearly Reunion Conference.

There has been no official confirmation or denial of this romance but interestingly another Iranian Robert Hossein (Currently working on a live show remake of Ben Hur in the Stade de France in Paris due next September) actor director and son of famed Musician Aminollah Hossein, was to do the voice commentaries during the ceremony where the Prince of Monaco was to receive the honors of the Royal Guards of Monaco.

Jessica Simpson, 25, and Nick Lachey, 32, are going their separate ways, the couple announced in a statement Wednesday.

"After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways," the statement says. "This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

Reports that their union was in trouble began surfacing last October following a wild bachelor party attended by Lachey. The couple denied those stories, with Simpson telling PEOPLE: "Our relationship is better than it's ever been."

Over the winter, the pair spent much of their time apart while Simpson was in Louisiana filming her movie debut as Daisy Duke in Dukes of Hazzard and Lachey worked on solo music projects.

But the couple reunited in the spring and shot down persistent rumors of a marital rift as they were seen out and about shopping, cuddling and clubbing together.

Elton John and his longtime partner, David Furnish, are planning a small civil ceremony to seal their union next month.

The couple said earlier this summer that they would marry after laws recognizing gay partnerships go into effect in Britain. The ceremony will be held Dec. 21, the date the legislation goes into effect.

"It'll be a very small family affair and then in the evening there'll be a soiree somewhere, which we have yet to work out," John, 58, tells Attitude magazine, according to the Associated Press. "But the ceremony itself will be David's parents and my parents and the two of us. They'll be our witnesses. That's the way we want to do it. They've been so fantastic to us and so supportive. Out of respect for their support, we want to just keep it small. Not to make a ballyhoo of the ceremony."

Furnish, 43, a Canadian-born filmmaker, who made a documentary about John titled Tantrums & Tiaras in 1997, has been with the singer for 12 years.

"As far as I'm concerned, I've always considered myself committed to Elton and he's the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with," Furnish was quoted as saying.

MOSTAR, Bosnia - Bosnia's southern town of Mostar unveiled the world's first statue of kung fu legend Bruce Lee on Saturday, paying homage to a childhood hero of all its divided ethnic groups.

The life-size 1.68 meter (5ft 7in) bronze statue is situated in Mostar's central park, close to the former front line of Bosnia's 1992-95 civil war. A decade after the conflict, Mostar's Muslim and Croat inhabitants remain deeply split.

Unveiled by its initiators, Veselin Gatalo and Nino Raspudic of Mostar's Urban Movement, the statue portrays the Chinese-American actor, who died 32 years ago, in a typical defensive fighting position.

"This does not mean that Bruce Lee will unite us, because people are different and cannot be united and we will always be Muslims, Serbs or Croats," Gatalo said. "But one thing we all have in common is Bruce Lee."

Tom Cruise on Call in China

Tom Cruise got grabby while in Shanghai on Wednesday.

When a reporter in the middle of a press conference took a phone call, the star reached over and removed the cell phone from the journalist's hand – and started speaking to the surprised woman on the other line.

"Hello. Xie xie. Ni hao. How are you?" said an amused Cruise, dressed in black, exhausting his limited Chinese vocabulary before going on to ask if the woman – the reporter's wife – was at work and about her marital status, the Associated Press reports.

Cruise and his crew were meeting the media after wrapping up two weeks of shooting for Mission: Impossible III. Brad Pitt has started the process to adopt Angelina Jolie's two kids, the actor's publicist informed the Associated Press on Friday.

A legal petition seeking to change the names of the children to Zahara Jolie-Pitt and Maddox Jolie-Pitt was filed in Los Angeles, publicist Cindy Guagenti said in a written statement.

"We are confirming that Brad Pitt is in the process of becoming the adoptive father of both children," the statement said. "No further comment is being made."

Jolie, who is a single mom to Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 11 months, told PEOPLE at the first annual Worldwide Orphans Foundation benefit on Oct. 24 that she wants to adopt again.

"I'm planning on it," Jolie said. "Most of the night I just thought about how quickly I want to adopt again. It's a very special thing. There's something about making a choice, waking up and traveling somewhere and finding your family."

LOS ANGELES - "Alias" star Jennifer Garner has given birth to her first child, a daughter, with actor-husband Ben Affleck, US Weekly magazine reported on Thursday.

A publicist for Garner, 33, could not immediately be reached for comment. Affleck's representative declined comment on the report.

Us Weekly reported on its Web site that the birth came after doctors induced labor at a Los Angeles hospital on Wednesday night, a week before Garner's expected due date. The magazine quoted an unidentified friend of the couple as saying Affleck, 33, was with his spouse "the entire time."

The couple simultaneously announced their marriage, and Garner's pregnancy, in June. The pair were widely reported to have begun dating last year, months after Affleck and former girlfriend Jennifer Lopez called off their highly publicized engagement.

Affleck and Garner first worked together on the 2001 film "Pearl Harbor" and co-starred in the 2003 superhero action film "Daredevil," leading to Garner's big-screen spin-off role in this year's "Elektra."

Set to wed in Brazil Saturday: Greek billionaire Athina Roussel Onassis, 20, granddaughter and sole heiress of the late shipping magnate (and onetime husband of Jacqueline Kennedy) Aristotle Onassis, and Brazilian equestrian star Alvaro Alfonso de Miranda, the 32-year-old son of an insurance company owner.

Clearly, this will be no ordinary ceremony. The wedding will be held at the Maria Luiza and Oscar Americano Foundation, an 18.5-acre spread that includes a museum, a tea house and a cultural center.

The wedding will be a "family affair" attended by some 750 guests, according to the groom's father, Ricardo Miranda. At least 400 private security guards will be deployed to protect the guests – who must first pass through two metal detectors – and keep out paparazzi.

The bride, who was raised in Switzerland by her French-born father, Thierry Roussel, and inherited an estimated $2.7 billion from her grandfather on her 18th birthday, will wear a dress by Valentino, the elder Miranda said. It remains to be seen whether Roussel, who engaged in a bitter legal battle against the estate to stake a claim in the Onassis fortune, will attend his daughter's wedding.

Rocker Marilyn Manson married his longtime girlfriend, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, on Saturday in front of some 60 guests as fans and well wishers gathered outside, PEOPLE has learned.

The ceremony took place in Kilsheelan, County Tipperary, Ireland, at Castle Gurteen, the home of the couple's friend, artist Gottfried Helnwein. Contrary to rumors that the pair would exchange their blood during the ceremony, they actually traded vows they wrote for each other.

Manson (real name Brian Warner), 36, gave Von Teese (real name: Heather Sweet), 33, a wedding band from William Harold Jewelers in Newport Beach, Calif., where he also got her 7-carat, antique, European round-cut diamond engagement ring. The groom's wedding band is a custom-made platinum ring with onyx inlay from Dana Schneider.

Schaech, 36, who appeared in the movie That Thing You Do! and is in pre-production with Road House 2: Last Call, cited irreconcilable differences, say the court papers.

Applegate, 34, whose credits include Married ... With Children and last year's Anchorman, is currently on Broadway in a revival of Sweet Charity, which will run until the end of this month. With the sleepless nights, dirty diapers and high emotions that accompany young parenthood, perhaps the big blowup was inevitable.

On Nov. 30 Britney Spears and her husband, Kevin Federline, had such a heated argument that, a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE in its latest issue, Spears dropped the D-word, and Federline bolted from their Malibu home.

"She wanted a divorce," says a friend of Spears's. And, says a source close to Federline, "when she's upset with him, he likes to give her some space. I don't think she's upset with him because of something specific he's done. I think she's overwhelmed with her new lifestyle – being a wife and mother – and sometimes takes it out on the people who she's closest to and who she knows will stick around."

Spears's way of taking it out on her husband? By showing up that night at the L.A. club LAX and dancing into the wee hours with friends. "It was definitely a girls' night out," says an LAX partner. "Kevin was being punished."

Of course, Federline, 27, didn't seem too tortured during his own marathon of clubbing in Vegas a few days later: First he and his all-male entourage hit Pure Nightclub, where he caught up with Nicole Richie's fiancé, DJ AM, then partied at the club Tao Las Vegas until 4 a.m.

Also earning eight nods were John Legend and Kanye West. Soul crooner Legend's nominations included best new artist, while his mentor West is up for album of the year for Late Registration and song of the year for "Gold Digger."

"This is incredible," Carey told CBS's Early Show. "I feel blessed to be a part of today. I feel blessed for having this incredible year. I'm just grateful for everything I have."

She said she felt best over the nomination for The Emancipation of Mimi as album of the year. ("We Belong Together" is up for song and record.) Renée Zellweger and country star Kenny Chesney's brief marriage is now officially over. The couple's annulment was finalized with court papers filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to the legal papers, obtained by PEOPLE, Zellweger, 36, and Chesney, 37, waived their rights to motion for a new trial and the rights to appeal.

The Oscar-winning actress filed for the annulment on Sept. 14, just four months after their picturesque, beachside wedding in the Virgin Islands. Unlike a divorce, an annulment essentially erases a marriage, declaring it null, as if it had never happened in the first place. Zellweger signed the paperwork Nov. 18 and Chesney signed on Dec. 12. A judge granted that request Tuesday, effectively removing one of the more curious celebrity romances from the books.

NEW YORK - Five years after the release of her solo debut album, singer Heather Small may finally get her due in the United States.

The photogenic Small recently was featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," where she performed "Proud," the title track from the 5-year-old set. Cash registers tend to become active when Oprah Winfrey champions an artist. And in the case of Small, such exposure may finally catapult her into the pop spotlight.

Small was a member of '90s British dance-pop outfit M People, a quartet that scored global hits with "Moving On Up," "Excited," "Open Your Heart" and other buoyant jams.

"It has been an experience," Small told Billboard. "And I must give thanks to one of the show's producers."

According to Small, a "Winfrey" producer heard "Proud" in a workout class. "She thought the song might work for an upcoming theme on the show," Small said. The producer played it for Winfrey, and things took off from there.

It's not unusual to call Jones Sir Tom

LONDON - Veteran crooner Tom Jones, jazzman John Dankworth and playwright Arnold Wesker received knighthoods in the British New Year's Honors list announced Saturday.

The U.K.'s top lifetime achievement awards, the Queen's honors, which include varied ranks, go to people from all walks of life. Among them, punk-era designer Vivienne Westwood was made a dame (the equivalent of a knighthood) for services to British fashion.

Welshman Jones, 65, becomes Sir Tom, joining other pop star knights including Paul McCartney, Elton John and Mick Jagger. His 40-year career kicked off with the hit "It's Not Unusual," which, along with recordings such as "Delilah" and "She's a Lady," has been featured in many movies.

Jones sang the title songs for feature films "What's New, Pussycat?" and "Thunderball" in 1965 and had a hit musical show, "This is Tom Jones" on ABC-TV 1969-1971.

Pink says her new video for "Stupid Girls" is meant to be taken as a lesson – that young women should aspire to more than such pop-icon pastimes as shopping, clubbing and making suggestive TV commercials.

"I live in L.A., so it's obvious what I'm surrounded by," the punk-pop star tells MTV.com, adding: "I don't need to name names."

Once anyone sees the video, Pink doesn't have to. The parodies take pot shots at a certain hotel heiress's sex tape, a Newlyweds star's music videos, a billionaire twin's boho shopping extravaganzas and a Mean Girls star's car crashes. (MTV inserts the names: Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Mary-Kate Olsen and Lindsay Lohan).

The "Stupid Girls" video was directed by Dave Meyer, and in it Pink reportedly slips off the hood of a soapy car and crashes into pedestrians while on her cell phone – ticked off that it distracts her from applying more lip gloss.

In a more personal matter, Pink, 26, and motocross racer and The Surreal Life star Carey Hart, 30, wed in Costa Rica on Jan. 7, PEOPLE reported exclusively.

Bobby Brown is brushing off reports that he and wife Whitney Houston are headed for divorce court. "The rumors are wrong," Brown told PEOPLE on Thursday. "They're false."

Asked by PEOPLE on Thursday how the story started, Brown replied, "I really couldn't tell you. They say I said something about it, but I joke a lot. ... I don't think I said it, but if I did it was a joke. Trust me. ... It's someone that got the words mixed up."

When Houston heard the story, Brown says, "Oh, she called me! She's calling me on a regular basis like, 'Bobby! Did you say this? Did you say that?'"

Brown describes Houston as "definitely upset." As for himself, he says, "There's no way I can be upset, because I didn't say it and I'm not trying to divorce her, and that's the most important thing.
