It seems she’s got nothing to lose. Her face is calm and only sometimes a smile appears on her face. She touches the carpet texture pointlessly, shrugs her shoulders and says:” I didn’t realize what happened. I might have become mad. I was just thinking of suicide, couldn’t think of anything else. I was scared. I admit that I made a mistake and want to tell the others through what I’ve passed… It couldn’t be worse.”
These are what Mrs. MA says. She is a woman from a city in north of Iran, a woman accused of murder. She claims she committed a murder, just to defend herself. Claim which she could not prove, and now she’s about to lose her life for that.
ONE GRAY DAY
During one gray day in mid-march 2000, a hospital in a North city happened to have a strange incident inside. According to the local police report, the police officers found blood stains in the hospital’s loundry room, 2 bloody knives and a bottle containing some kind of yellowish liquid ( liquid plumber), as well as 2 accused of murder, M.A ( 25 in that time) and a 16 year old girl.
M.A confessed to committing murder in the primary court, but says it was a self defense concerning her honor.
According to tests results, the man’s death was due to internal bleeding, as a result of several stabs with a sharp and pointy instrument.
A MISSING DOCUMENT
As the confession goes, 2 months before the murder, a man named H started disturbing her in the streets. These trouble makings gradually got the shape of tempting and threat seeking sexual relationships.
Once she goes to her city’s hospital in order to get thyroid treatment. She was holding a health insurance document belonging to a friend of her. In the hospital she met A.Y who has been working in the hospital’s loundry. A.Y introduced himself as a friend of her brother and said he could facilitate the process.
M.A who was having her friend’s health insurance document, trusted A.Y and gave the document to him.
He went to another room and when he came back told her that the hospital authorities realized the document belonged to someone else and they kept it. Then he suggested her to be back within 2 days to get the document back. After 2 days when she went to A.Y in the hospital “ he come to me after a while and said you have to directly talk to the hospital manager and immediately took my hand and dragged me into a room in which a huge man who was H, put his hand on my mouth, then undressed ma and started taking pictures of me. When I had my clothes on H said to me that I myself had to go to him to get my pictures back” she said.
According to M, after this on, within 2 months, she was constently threatened by the men. They threatened her to print the pictures in Tehran and publish them in their city and specially in her brother’s shop.
Once A told her on the phone that he has got the negatives and willing to give them back to her.
As M says, she wanted him to swear on Quran that he would not lie. “ Come tomorrow and take them” he said, while fear and concerns made me to have my beauty saloon’s assistant with me, as well as defending stuff. When M.A and her 16 year old assistant entered the hospital’s loundry they saw A approaching the young girl to flirt with her. M.A immediately realized that the whole show was nothing but a set up meant for other reasons.
As M describes:
He said:” what’s the girls name?”
I said : Masoumeh
He said: Hey Masoumeh! Lets make friends …
I said: bastard !! you sweared on Quran, and …
Fight between A and 2 women leaded into throwing acid and using knife against the man and finally his death. A murder for which the murderer has no evidence to prove her main motivation.
She says :” I wish I would live in peace if I’m going to stay alive. I wanted to be on my own and raise my orphan children with honor. They betrayed me.”
THE COURT RULLING
According to the verdict issued by the high court sub- office 26,” with regard to content of the case and the article 26/a of justice law the court’s ruling regarding the death penalty for Mrs M.A for murdering A.Y is confirmed.”
Lawyer and the case’s consultant, Zohreh Arzani says:” the official process is all done and now even a advocate can not be of any help. The only hope goes to the victim’s family because they could get the blood money instead of having her accused.
In charge of victim’s 3 children, his parents have said they would let M.A free if they get the blood money. But M.A’s family can not afford it.
Among these all here comes another piece of news; M.A ‘s younger child, who’s 12, and living with his father after the mother put in jail, dies. The child was suffocated by gas.
M.A says:” my ex-husband is a drug addicted and now I’m so much concerned of my 15 year old daughter, but I can do nothing.”
Blood money for a muslim man is about 25 million Tomans (28000 $) and so far about one third of this money has been paid by philanthropists.
M.A and her family can not afford the blood money which is the only way to get her free of accusation, and in the short time left, she is waiting to see which would win the fight; death or life ?!
