'Real Borat' seeks apology

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkey's Internet celebrity Mahir Cagri is so convinced he was the inspiration for the Kazakh journalist character Borat Sagdiyev that he plans to travel to London seeking ways he can benefit from the movie that has surprised Hollywood with a No. 1 debut.

Cagri, 44, became a cyber celebrity after he posted a personal Web site in 1999, which featured unintentionally amusing photos of himself playing pingpong or the accordion and sunbathing in a skimpy bathing suit.

Word of the site spread quickly and the Web site received more than a million hits from fans poking fun at, or endeared by his broken English and as well as a hilarious invitation to women: "Who is want to come TURKEY I can invitate ... She can stay my home."

"The world knows he is copying Mahir," Cagri told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from his Aegean coastal hometown of Izmir on Monday, minutes before he was to board a plane for Istanbul to appear on a talk show.

"I am not saying this -- the world is. I have received so many e-mails from people in the United States who tell me he is imitating me," he said.

Cagri -- a freelance journalist -- was scheduled to fly to London on Tuesday for meetings with his manager and lawyer there to discuss his options and hold interviews with British newspapers. He hopes to receive an "acknowledgment or an apology" from Baron Cohen.

"The bombshell is going to fall," he said of his London trip. "(Comedian Sasha Baron Cohen) is making money by using me."

Baron Cohen's character in the movie "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" was first developed for "Da Ali G Show.

On the commentary track to the DVD of "Da Ali G Show," Baron Cohen says Borat was influenced by someone he met in southern Russia.

"I can't remember his name -- he was a doctor" Baron Cohen said. "The moment I met him, I was totally crying. He was a hysterically funny guy, albeit totally unintentionally."

The character Borat has caused outrage among Kazakhs over the way their nation is being portrayed.

Cagri set up his Web site in the hope of making foreign friends and welcoming guests from abroad to his home. The Turk quickly became a celebrity much to his surprise. Relishing from his fame, Cagri has traveled to Europe and the United States to meet fans on sponsored trips.

Cohen says he could never embarrass himself like alter ego Borat

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sacha Baron Cohen, whose fictional Kazakh reporter Borat has sparked controversy, says he could never put himself and others in embarrassing situations if he weren't in character.
"I think I'd find it hard to," Cohen says in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. "I think you can hide behind the characters and do things that you yourself find difficult."

Cohen's spoof documentary, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit of Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," follows his Kazakh TV journalist character on a cross-country trip to report back to his homeland on American culture.

The film has become a runaway hit - generating complaints and lawsuits along the way from Borat's unwitting subjects who say they were duped into making racist, sexist and anti-Semitic remarks.

Cohen, a devout Jew who keeps kosher and the Sabbath when possible, says he purposely made his character prejudiced.

"Borat essentially works as a tool," the 35-year-old British comedian tells the magazine in an interview conducted before the film's opening.

"By himself being anti-Semitic, he lets people lower their guard and expose their own prejudice, whether it's anti-Semitism or an acceptance of anti-Semitism," he says.

Cohen says doesn't like to discuss how he got people to appear on camera or take seriously Borat's preposterous questions. Revealing his tactics, he says, would be "a disaster, terrible for me."

The hit film Borat is more than just a great comedy (and definitely my favorite comedy of all times), it has become a cultural phenomenon. Usually, catch phrases are the domain of TV shows like Seinfeld but nowadays, it is not unusual to overhear people of all races, classes, and age act out entire scenes from the film, whether it is the fictional songs of Korki Kochek, or one of Borat's famous "high fives."

It is also fascinating to see the negative reactions to the movie, everything from lawsuits filed by disgruntled individuals appearing in the movie, to conservative columnists poo-pooing it as anti-American, and of course the government of Kazakhstan lodging protests with the White House over the depiction in the film. The absurdity of the claims of being "duped" into revealing to the whole world one's anti-Semitic, misogynist or racist views is beyond anything that I have ever seen. The level of outrage sparked by Borat only serves as a litmus test to how effective the genius behind this character, and this film is.

Borat can hardly be described by comparison to any previous characters in film or literature. There has been no one like him, at least with this mainstream success and worldwide appeal. Sasha Baron Cohen can at best be considered the love child of Peter Sellers and Andy Kaufman. That is not to say that he mimics these classic actors, only that they paved the way for him, and he has of course taken their satirical outlook to heights previously unseen.

Borat also reminds me of another wide-eyed innocent, used as a tool to demonstrate all those nasty, hypocritical and absurd aspect of our society, from centuries ago: Candide's Voltaire. Behind all his seemingly surface goofiness, there is great intelligence and no scene or characters have been selected at random. All have been depicted with a specific purpose.

On his amazing journey of "Cultural Learnings of America", Borat encounters every aspect of American society, from the judiciary, politicians, religious groups, urban dwellers etc. And while we may have an easy time laughing at the old rodeo cowboy talking about executing all homosexuals, because he seems like such an anachronism, the audience remains uncomfortably silent when those same sentiments are echoed by the young frat boys, our so-called best and brightest, the future generation of this country.

Borat is a film that is not only hilarious, satirical, and smart, it is also very bittersweet. For myself and millions of immigrants in the world, his eagerness to embrace combined with a degree of cautiousness and outright fear, cluelessness regarding social and cultural norms, and ultimately, his optimism in the face of adversity and disappointment, resonates a chord with all of us.

علي جي يکي ديگر از کاراکتر هاي بارون کوهن است که شوي علي جي در سال 2000 آغاز و برنده جايزه بفتا شد. در اين برنامه علي جي با افراد سرشناس مصاحبه مي کرد و برخورد اين افراد با سووالات علي جي، گفتگو هاي غير منتظره اي را پديد مي آورد. از افرادي که با علي مصاحبه کرده اند، مي توان به بوز الدرين فضا نورد، گور ويدال نويسنده، دونالد ترامپ غول ساختمان سازي آمريکا، شکيل اونيل بسکتباليست، محمد الفايز ميليونر مصري، نوام چامسکي و پطرس غالي، اشاره کرد.

بورات
بورات شخصيت تحول يافته اي است از دو شخصيت قبلي ساشا بارون کوهن، کمدين انگليسي: يک گزارشگر بدون نام اهل مولداوي و يک گزارشگر تلويزيوني آلبانيايي به نام کريستو.

فيلم "بورات: آموزش فرهنگي آمريکا به سود ملت پر افتخار قزاقستان" هم اکنون بر پرده سينما هاست. اين فيلم بدليل اهانت ها و رفتارهاي احمقانه اي که به نظر مي رسد از آنها آگاه نيست و تصويري که از قزاقستان نشان مي دهد، مورد انتقاد شديد دولت قزاقستان قرار گرفته است. تفاوت ميان قزاقستان و ملت اش با آنچه ساشا کوهن در فيلمش نشان مي دهد بسيار زياد است.

Sacha Baron Cohen's latest film, based on his character Bruno, has been given a rating in the US banning anyone aged 17 or under watching it, reports say.

Industry paper Variety said the ratings board - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) - objected to several sexual scenes.

It was awarded a NC-17, but film bosses had hoped for an R-rating, which allows under 17s to watch it with an adult.

The film is being re-edited before it is resubmitted to the MPAA.

The deleted sequences are likely to be saved for the DVD release at a later date.

The film is based around Bruno, a gay fashion reporter for Austrian TV, who was a character Sacha Baron created for TV's Da Ali G Show.

The movie follows in the success of his first film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

It was originally rated NC-17, but was later changed to an R-rating.

The Bruno film, which has been largely filmed in the US, is set to be released on 10 July.

On Sunday night, when Sacha Baron Cohen's alter-ego Bruno descended from the rafters and landed fanny-first on Eminem's head, most folks figured that the rapper's rage was the real deal. Suckers! Not only was Eminem in on the joke, he and Baron Cohen rehearsed it to make sure it would all go according to plan.

Suspicions over the legitimacy of "butt-gate" had been brewing for days, but it wasn't until a writer for the MTV Movie Awards confessed that we all knew for sure. On his blog, head writer Scott Aukerman wrote that the incident was staged. "They rehearsed it at dress (rehearsal) and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show." Wow. Let it never be said that Eminem isn't a team player.

According to the New York Daily News, Eminem wasn't Baron Cohen's first choice for the joke. That honor, which was tragically declined, went to Paris Hilton. Just imagine the buzz had that happened. Still, Eminem did a great job of selling the stunt considering he "may not have been briefed on just how naked Baron Cohen's flying 'Bruno' would be when he agreed."

What a pro.

Even before the writer's admission that the crash landing was planned, the searches had a suspicious slant. Throughout Monday, lookups on " was the eminem bruno stunt staged" and "eminem bruno joke" posted strong gains. Blogs, like this one from the Chicago Tribune, raised the possibility that the audience had just been played.

Now that the joke has been confirmed, queries are surging on "bruno eminem fake stunt." We'd say we feel used, but we're too busy laughing.
