Actress Keira Knightley is being lined up to play Diana, Princess Of Wales in a movie based on the late British royal's life.

A controversial book, Diana and the Paparazzi, is at the centre of a bidding war at this year's Cannes Film Festival in France.



Film producer Quentin Reynolds, who is bidding for the rights, hopes the movie adaptation will be as popular at the box office as The Queen, which won Dame Helen Mirren a Best Actress Oscar.

He says, "Already the word in Hollywood is 'get Knightley'. It's a story that has everything: pathos, tragedy, comedy, adventure...and Princess Diana.

"For every pound The Queen makes, a film about Diana will make ten."

A shocking documentary about Princess Diana which has been condemned by Princes William and Harry was aired on Channel 4 last night against the wishes of the princes.

Diana: The Witnesses In The Tunnel featured photos taken by French photographers of the car crash that killed the princess in 1997. A secretary for the two princes wrote a letter to Channel 4 asking them to pull the documentary because it showed "gross disrespect" to Diana's memory.

Channel 4 management took the request into consideration, but decided that the public would be interested in the programme.

Some of the images aired show the late princess in the ambulance. Diana, 36, and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, 42, along with their driver, Henri Paul, all lost their lives in the accident. The car was reportedly being chased by members of the paparazzi.

A British television channel has screened images taken immediately after the car crash that killed Princess Diana, defying a plea from her sons.

Diana's sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, had protested that showing photographs of the final moments of her life would be a "gross disrespect to their mother's memory".

Channel 4's documentary, Diana: The Witness in the Tunnel, showed photographs of the scene inside the Mercedes carrying the princess after it crashed in a Paris road tunnel on August 31, 1997.

But a detailed black-and-white image of the rear of the car, where Diana laid, and which shown a doctor attending to her minutes after the incident, did not show her face - which was obscured by a grey square.

"If it were your or my mother dying in that tunnel, would we want the scene broadcast to the nation?" the princes' private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said in a letter to Channel 4 television which was publicly released on Tuesday.

Channel 4 defended the film as a responsible documentary.

"We do not show, nor have we ever considered showing, Diana's final moments," it said in a statement.

Diana died along with her companion Dodi al-Fayed when the car driven by their chauffeur Henri Paul crashed in the tunnel.

Paul, subsequently said by French investigators to have been drunk and under the influence of anti-depressants, was also killed.

The broadcaster said the documentary examined the role of photographers alleged to have pursued Diana and Fayed from the Ritz Hotel to the Pont d'Alma tunnel, where the couple's speeding limousine slammed into a concrete pillar.

Police inquiries in both France and Britain have already concluded that pursuing media did not cause the crash, or fail to act properly at the scene.

"They were very, very close," Mark Butt, an eyewitness, told the documentary. "But they did not impede anybody."

In 2002, France's highest court dropped manslaughter charges against nine photographers - including Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez and Fabrice Chassery.

Last February, a Paris appeals court fined those three photographers one euro ($1.62) each for invasion of privacy for taking pictures of Diana and Fayed on the night of the crash.

Fayed's father, Mohamed al-Fayed, filed the invasion of privacy complaint, which focused on three photos of the couple leaving the hotel and three taken after the accident.

Al-Fayed claims that the photographers were used as a cover-up for a murder plot orchestrated by the British intelligence services and members of the royal family.

Lord Stevens, a former chief of London's Metropolitan Police, concluded after a lengthy inquiry that the crash was due to the chauffeur being drunk while driving at a high speed to elude photographers.

Stevens's report, published in January, said: "There was no evidence to show that the actions of the paparazzi were anything other than their normal working practice and no evidence that showed they were involved in any criminal conspiracy."

There was also no evidence that the "paparazzi, independently or in collusion with others, undertook actions in order to create an environment that allowed others to put into operation a plan to murder the Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed", Stevens said.

Sentiment and spontaneity at Wembley as the princes throw a party for Diana

They came with their plastic macs and Marks & Spencer carrier bags full of sandwiches, filing towards the enormous Wembley arch. It was to be a lighthearted celebration, the event's organisers had insisted, and certainly the snaking queue of couples and clumps of women of a certain age were ready for all the fun that Duran Duran, Brian Ferry and the English National Ballet could offer. "It's a brilliant lineup, so I'm anticipating some great music," said Wendy Armes from Buckinghamshire, sitting on the concrete steps, having passed through one body search queue and mustering her energy for a second.

Ms Armes camped out on the Mall on the night before Charles and Diana's wedding, and despite "blowing hot and cold" with the princess in the years before her death, came to Kensington Gardens to look at the flowers in 1997. "I do hope they play some of the older stuff, though. You know, the ones from Diana's day. The ones she would have liked to hear."
She need not have worried. The Concert for Diana, held yesterday at Wembley stadium, was all about nostalgia and carefully confected sentiment, and was the party that Diana, 10 years dead this summer, would have wanted. Yesterday would have been the princess's 46th birthday, an event which allowed her sons to plan a celebratory commemoration of her life ahead of the inevitably more solemn anniversary of her death in August.

"We know that if our mother was here today ... she'd be the first up out of her seat and dancing," the princes wrote in the introduction to the concert's programme. "Please join us in wishing our beloved mother a very happy birthday."

Under an enormous silver proscenium, its shape apparently based on the looping D of the princess's signature, an extraordinarily mixed bag of performers lined up to appear in front of the 68,000 crowd. They were selected, the princes said, because they were "her favourites and ours".

The concert, we are told, was from the beginning the brainchild of Princes William and Harry, as "our way of remembering her the way we knew her - full of fun and laughter, and full of a love of life". Perhaps surprisingly, the pair showed themselves no mean party planners. First on stage, delighting the crowd, was Sir Elton John singing Your Song. Then the young princes themselves took to the microphone, Harry even allowing himself a brief rock star moment, yelling a faintly comical "Hello Wembley!" to the audience.

"This evening is about all that our mother loved in life: her music, her dance, her charities, her family and friends," Harry said, before adding a surprise message to some absent friends. "I'd also like to say hi to all the guys in A Squadron Household Cavalry, who are serving out in Iraq at the moment. I wish I was there with you. I'm sorry I can't be, but to you and everyone else in operations at the moment we would both like to say: stay safe."

Had Diana changed the royal family, the crowd on the way in had been pondering? With that tiny, breathtaking flash of their mother's spontaneous capacity to connect, the princes settled the argument. It was a curious experience to watch again the footage of Diana, screened in the many breaks between performances - inspecting another troop line, cuddling another toddler, waving yet another posy at yet another adoring crowd. To watch such footage is to be reminded that in truth she belonged to another age.

"She's still the figurehead of England," said Ken Herbert from Gravesend, smoking a last cigarette outside the venue with his friend Steve Mundy. "But it's certainly changed since she was alive. Changed for the worse. Just look at what happened yesterday, with the bombs. We nearly didn't come because of that." He had been reassured by the measures at the venue, he said, with 450 police officers and countless other security personnel at the entrances.

Had any of the change in Britain been due to Diana?

"I don't think so," said Mr Mundy with a smile. "People have short memories. How many people think of her very often? Let's be honest, most people are here because of the show, and much less for the Diana connection. They admired her, but they have moved on."

"No, it's the boys," said his wife Pat, with a half-joking scold. "It's emotive. That's why we're here. For the boys. And to remember."

Princess Diana jury under guard for Paris visit

The jury in the inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales will be surrounded by more than 500 armed police officers as it tours the streets of Paris today.

The French Interior Ministry, the equivalent of the Home Office, has ordered a massive security operation for the first British court ever to sit in the capital.

Such is the sensitivity in France over allegations that the investigation into the 1997 crash which killed Diana was not sufficiently thorough, the ministry has pulled out all the stops to prove how seriously it takes its role in any Diana inquiry.

With the world's most high profile inquest transferring to Paris for two days, the French authorities fear the court could be a potential terrorist target, and have "locked down" the areas which the jury will be visiting, closing them to traffic and limiting access to pedestrians.

The jury will retrace Diana's final journey this afternoon, being driven from the Ritz Hotel in the Place Vendome to the Alma underpass, where Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed died after the Mercedes in which they were travelling crashed.

The site visit begins at 2pm when the jury are driven to the Ritz Hotel to be shown the front entrance, where dozens of paparazzi gathered on the night Diana died, and the rear exit, where they set off in the hope of evading the photographers.

The jury will then be driven through the Alma tunnel before police stop the traffic so the court can walk into the underpass and view the crash scene at close quarters.

This evening the jury will be driven along the route again, this time in darkness, so they can be given a feel for the driving conditions at the time of night when the crash happened.

The security presence includes around 200 members of the elite CRS riot squad, 200 gendarmes, dozens of officers of the anti-terrorist RAID police unit and undercover officers from the French equivalent of Special Branch.

As well as the jurors, the court party includes coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker, barristers, journalists and court officials, but Mohamed Fayed, the father of Dodi, decided not to travel to Paris.

The jury visit got off to an ignominious start when the coach carrying the jurors was involved in a minor collision in the Place Vendome with a police motorcyclist, who stopped his bike in front of the coach before falling over and hitting it.

Moments later, as the coach swung round to the front of the Ritz, the driver hit a metal bollard, bursting a rear tyre with an explosive bang which echoed around the square.

Then, as the driver was changing the tyre, Victoria Beckham walked out of the Ritz past the jury's coach, prompting a sudden frenzy of activity among the waiting photographers.

بهای این بی توجهی یا تصمیم نابخردانه تا آن حد بالا رفت که مردم بریتانیا که ملاحظه کاری یکی از خصوصیات بارز آنها است، در حالیکه کاخ دایانا در لندن را غرق در گل و پیام حمایت و وفاداری کرده بودند، آینده پادشاهی را چندان مطمئن نمی دیدند.

در اوج آن عواطف مردمی، اگر در آن روزها شایع می شد که عضوی از خانواده سلطنتی مسبب مرگ پرنسس دایانا بوده است شاید خیلی ها حاضر به باور آن بودند و خواهان انجام تحقیقاتی در پیرامون احتمال وجود یک توطئه هم می شدند.

قوی ترین انگیزه ها برای رسیدن به چنین باوری، یکی نارضایی علنی دربار از زندگی اجتماعی و روابط خصوصی دایانا بود که به انزوای او از طرف خانواده سلطنتی منجر شده بود و دیگری، ناخشنودی بیشتر مردم از روابط نه چندان پنهان پرنس چارلز با کامیلا، زنی متاهل که بعد از جدا شدن از همسرش، در سال ۲۰۰۵ با ولیعهد ازدواج کرد. درباره سابقه این رابطه، دایانا، بعد از جدا شدن از چارلز، در یک مصاحبه به یاد ماندنی تلویزیونی گفت همیشه احساس می کرد که نفر سومی در ازدواجشان حضور دارد.

درباره علت حادثه و مرگ دایانا و دودی فاید سه بارتحقیق شد، دو بار در بریتانیا و یکبار در فرانسه؛ هر سه، علت انحراف اتومبیل و برخورد به ستون یک تونل زیرزمینی را مستی هانری پل، راننده اتومبیل تشخیص دادند که گفته شد برای فرار از دوربین های خبرنگاران درحال تعقیب، با سرعتی غیر قابل کنترل رانندگی می کرد و خود در این حادثه کشته شد.

در این مدت، تنها کسی که حاضر به قبول یافته این گزارش ها نبوده محمد فاید، سرمایه دار مصری و پدر دودی فاید است که مدعی است پرنسس دایانا و پسرش قربانی توطئه ای شدند که پرنس فیلیپ، همسر ملکه بریتانیا و سازمان های اطلاعاتی برای از بین بردن پرنسس دایانا چیده بودند. محمد فاید معتقد است که دایانا و پسرش قصد ازدواج داشتند و دربار و نهادهای اطلاعاتی با ازدواج مادر ولیعهد آینده بریتانیا با یک مسلمان به شدت مخالف بودند.

تحقیقات طولانی در لندن

آنچه که ۴ ماه است در یکی از دادگاه های عالی لندن می گذرد، آخرین تلاش محمد فاید برای اثبات همین ادعاها به قاضی و هئیت منصفه دادگاه است که نهایتا باید بگویند که نتیجه تحقیقات قبلی قابل قبول است یا نه.


پرنسس دایانا و دودی فاید، معشوق مصری اش بیش ده سال پیش در یک حادثه رانندگی در پاریس کشته شدند

در این مدت، افراد و شخصیت های گوناگونی به دادگاه احضار شدند، مشاور نزدیک پرنس فیلیپ، که گفت بین پدر شوهر و عروس خصومتی وجود نداشت؛ دوستان نزدیک دایانا، که درباره عشق بین دایانا و دودی فاید حرف های ضد و نقیض کم نگفتند؛ مدیر یک جواهر فروشی در پاریس که دودی فاید ظاهرا برای خرید حلقه نامزدی به او مراجعه کرده بود و ده ها نفر دیگر.

جالب ترین سندی که در این جلسات به عنوان مدرک مدعی ارائه شد، متن گفتگویی بود که پرنسس دایانا با وکیل شخصی خود داشته و در آن از مخالفت و ضدیت خانواده سلطنتی با خود گفته و اینکه ممکن است در حادثه ای از بین برده شود.

در این مکالمات خصوصی، دایانا نظرش درباره جانشین ملکه الیزابت را هم به این صورت بیان کرده که به جای پرنس چارلز، ولیعهد و همسر سابقش، پرنس ویلیام، فرزند ارشد آنها وارث تاج و تخت خانواده ویندزور شود.

هفته پیش، دادگاه با احضار دو تن از بحث انگیز ترین افرادی که پرنسس دایانا را از نزدیک می شناختند می رفت که خبر ساز شود، ولی نشد.

پل بارل، سرپیشخدمت دایانا، که خود را محرم تمام اسرار او معرفی می کند و دو کتاب هم درباره سال های خدمتش نوشته، در زیر رگبار سوال های وکلای طرفین اعتراف کرد که کامل گیج شده و نمی داند چه می گوید؛ پاسخی که اعتبار او را بعنوان شاهد دست اول زیر سوال برد. نفر بعدی، ترور ریس جونز، محافظ شخصی خانواده فاید و تنها بازمانده تصادف مرگبار در پاریس بود که تحت نام خانوادگی تازه ریس به محکمه تحقیقات احضار شد.

ترور ریس که از ۱۰ سال پیش و پس از معالجات طولانی گفته دچار فراموشی شده و از شب حادثه چیزی به یاد ندارد، در دادگاه اتهام وکیل مدافع کارفرمای سابق خود را رد کرد که دو سال پیش رسما مدعی شد فراموشی او مصلحتی است و بخشی از توطئه برای از بین بردن پرنسس دایانا بوده است.

این محافظ شخصی سابق محمد فاید، ظاهرا حافظه اش تا حدی به کار افتاد و در دادگاه گفت به یاد دارد که موتور سواری اتومبیل آنها را تعقیب می کرد ولی چیز دیگری به یاد ندارد. مهمترین شهادت ریس جونز که نتیجه گیری سه گزارش قبلی را به زیر سوال می برد تکذیب مست بودن هانری پل، راننده اتومبیل در آن شب بود. او با اطمینان گفت که بعنوان محافظ شخصی دودی فاید، هرگز اجازه نمی داد یک مست پشت فرمان اتومبیل دودی فاید بنشیند.

تمام این نکات، چه تازه یا تکراری، هم بالقوه جنجال برانگیز است و هم به طرز تلخی طنز آلود و سرگرم کننده، ولی چیزی که نیست، یا دست کم تاکنون نبوده، کمک به یافتن پاسخی است که تحقیقات جاری برای کشف آن جریان یافت.

در پایان جلسه چهارشنبه هفته پیش، قاضی لرد اسکات بیکر، رئیس دادگاه خطاب به مایکل منسفیلد، وکیل محمد فاید گفت: "این تحقیقات ما را به مسیری نتیجه بخش هدایت نمی کند. فکر نمی کنید بهتر آن باشد که موکل شما در ادعای خود تجدید نظر کند؟" در پاسخ، مایکل منسفیلد گفت: "سوگ خانواده ای داغدار می تواند آنقدر عمیق باشد که به آسانی فراموش نشود."

شاید این گفته درست باشد ولی فاش شدن موضوع هایی نظیر اینکه مادر دایانا مخالف روابط عاشقانه دخترش با دو مرد مسلمان بوده و به همین دلیل یکبار او را "هرجایی" خطاب کرده بود، یا اینکه ملکه الیزابت، به گفته پل بارل، بعد از مرگ دایانا گفته بود از روابط و شیوه زندگی دایانا نگران شده بود، شاید برای تیترنویسان روزنامه های جنجالی و عامه پسند شمش طلا باشد ولی نه برای پایان دادن به موضوعی که هر روز، با برملا شدن گوشه ای دیگر از زندگی خصوصی دو نفر - که بیش از ده سال از مرگشان گذشته - زننده تر و ملال آورتر می شود.
