I don't know how much of this is relevant to you, but these are the steps I went through personally to go from total fop (fresh off the plane), to now doing my own English-Farsi translation for Irani story writers. You have an advantage of starting fresh... you can use words in a way that those who have been talking Farsi all their lives can't and you might impress yourself.

a small thing is to write farsi with english letters... like how some people on forums do... even better is watching Irani movies and tv shows (e.g. baghe mozafar). if you love your heritage, become friends with Iranis that just came from Iran... there will be some cultural misunderstandings (as there is always) but ignore that and go through with it. you'll need someone to watch the shows with too and many people like them so that shouldn't be too bad...

ignore when people laugh or say your farsi isn't good... if you think about Iranian metaphors a lot you'll be using them more than people straight from Iran and they'll be shocked to hear them from you and reverse their judgment. Inevitably your farsi will be a little different at first, but that does not mean its of a lesser quality... it will be just different.

last do little Irani things like drinking chai a lot or sitting on the ground to eat... it increases your motivation to learn...

joubin: I did use to do a bit of translation. At some gatherings I would translate/summarise what was said from English into Farsi, esp. if i would see an old iranian man who was sitting there pretending to be interested during a long presentation

Everyone: thanks for the links & suggestions - keep them coming

(This will be useful for me and a lot of other people in my position)

Thank you for this thread. I’ve meant to learn for years. My father was the Persian parent and the only Farsi fluent in the family. He died when I was four. I was raised by my Anglo mother who’s only fluent in English. I never stayed in touch with my Persian relatives as I should have. I don’t even know what I did with a mailing address I had to begin searching for them. I still thank you for this thread.

                        What's up?

Anyway Thanks again for opening such a great thread. I hope everybody here help us keep our heritage!
