تابلوی بزرگ "HOLLYWOOD" که برای بيش از 80 سال بر فراز تپه های محله معروفی به همين نام جا خوش کرده به مرور زمان به نماينده و نشان اصلی سينمای هاليوود و شهر لس آنجلس بدل شده است. اما اين تابلو سرگذشت غيرمنتظره ای دارد.
خيلی ها که آن را از طريق فيلم های هاليوودی شناخته اند بر اين تصورند که اين تابلوی عظيم که قد حروف آن به 14 متر می رسد را صنعت سينما به عنوان مظهر و نشان خود بنا کرده است.

اما تابلو اصلا توسط "گروه املاک هاليوودلند" در سال 1923 برای تبليغ تپه های شهر به عنوان محل مناسبی برای ساخت خانه و زندگی نصب شد.

به علاوه برای کسانی که سال های پيش از 1950 را به ياد می آورند اين تابلو چيزی کم دارد. در واقع چهار چيز کم دارد. تابلو اصلا حاوی چهار حرف ديگر يعنی "LAND" به عنوان حروف پايانی بود که نام کامل شرکت املاک را منعکس می کرد.

اما اين تابلو - که ظاهرا قرار بود فقط برای يک سال و نيم برپا باشد - برای بيش از 80 سال پا برجا مانده و مردم شهر چنان به آن خو گرفته اند که اکنون يک موسسه خصوصی وظيفه نگهداری از آن را به عهده دارد.

طول تابلو تقريبا 150 متر است و از همه بخش های محله هاليوود و همچنين به شرط شفاف بودن هوا از بسياری نقاط ديگر لس آنجلس قابل رؤيت است.

تابلوی اوليه را چهار هزار لامپ روشن می کرد و يک کارگر داشت که تنها وظيفه اش تعويض لامپ های سوخته بود. او در کابينی پشت تابلو زندگی می کرد.

نگهداری رسمی از تابلو در سال 1939 متوقف و فرسايش سريع آن شروع شد.

حتی حادثه تلخی در سال 1932 باعث بدنامی تابلويی شد که امروزه مظهر زرق و برق هاليوود شناخته می شود.


تابلوی هاليوود را می توان از بسياری نقاط شهر ديد

در آن سال زن جوانی به اسم "پگ اِنتويسل" پس از ناکامی در حرفه بازيگری و ياس شديد از پله های يکی از حروف تابلو (H) بالا رفت و خود را به زير افکند.

در دهه چهل يکی از حروف تابلو در اثر سقوط اتومبيلی از جاده ای که از فراز تپه می گذرد تخريب شد.

روند تخريب ادامه يافت تا اينکه در سال 1949 اتاق بازرگانی هاليوود پا پيش گذاشت و پيشنهاد کرد چهار حرف پايانی تابلو را برچيند و بقيه را مرمت کند.

هرچند آن اقدام جان تازه ای به تابلو بخشيد اما وظيفه نگهداری از آن مشکل از آب درآمد.

تا اينکه اتاق بازرگانی هاليوود در سال 1978 تصميم گرفت تابلو را که در وضعيت بدی قرار گرفته بود به کلی با يک نشان تازه جايگزين کند.

هيو هفنر موسس Playboy در ويلای خود مهمانی داد و علاوه بر خود او هشت نفر از مهمانان حاضر شدند هر يک 28 هزار دلار اعطا کنند تا 9 حرف تابلو عوض شود.

حروف تازه از جنس فولاد است که عمری طولانی را برای تابلو تضمين می کند.

تابلوی جديد در روز 14 نوامبر سال 1978 در هفتاد و پنج سالگی هاليوود در برابر چشمان 60 ميليون بيننده تلويزيونی پرده برداری شد.

تابلو بار ديگر در سال 2005 نوسازی و رنگ شد. همان سال بود که قطعه ای از تابلوی اصلی به حراج گذشته شد و تصور می شود بيش از 300 هزار دلار فروخته شده باشد.
