Juventus will visit Parma in the third round of the Italian Cup next month following a complicated draw made on Wednesday.

Serie B sides and promoted Genoa and Napoli will contest the first and second rounds on Aug. 15 and Aug.18 with the winners going through to the third round on Aug. 29, three days after the start of the league season.

In the third round they will join the sides that finished outside the top eight in last season's Serie A plus Serie B champions Juve.

Along with Parma versus Juve, Cagliari against Siena is the only other definite third round match.

Holders AS Roma, runners-up Inter Milan and the other remaining top-flight sides enter the competition for the two-legged fourth round to be played in December and January.

The winner of Parma versus Juve will play Empoli while Sampdoria await the victor of Cagliari against Siena.

The new one-match final is scheduled for May 24.

Juventus will host Livorno on Aug. 25 or 26 in its first match back in Serie A after being demoted in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus was relegated to the second division last season, but overcame a nine-point penalty and won promotion by finishing first in Serie B. Juventus was treated as one of the top seeded teams in Tuesday's schedule draw despite its status as a promoted club.

Inter Milan will open its title defense at home against Udinese, European champion AC Milan will visit newly promoted Genoa, and Napoli will mark its return to the top division after a six-year absence against Cagliari.

AS Roma hosts Juventus in the fourth round in the first matchup of title contenders. On Sept. 30, Roma faces Inter and Torino plays Juventus in the Turin derby.

Roma and Lazio will face off in the Roman derby on Oct. 31 and March 15, Juventus and Inter play on Nov. 4 and March 22, Milan meets Juventus on Dec. 2 and April 13 and Inter and Milan will clash on Dec. 23 and May 4.

Claudio Ranieri said Juventus were not looking for reinforcements despite the promoted side's unimpressive form in pre-season friendlies.

"We are not buying anyone," the former Chelsea boss told a news conference on Tuesday.

The Turin club have been linked with Stuttgart's Portuguese defender Fernando Meira after recent defeats to Newcastle United, Hamburg and a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

The Juve defence has looked fragile despite the arrival of Meira's Portugal team mate Jorge Andrade from Deportivo Coruna and Czech international Zdenek Grygera from Ajax in the close season.

"Some might say we need a defender, a midfielder or a striker, but I say the market is closed," Ranieri added.

Ranieri also played down reports in the Italian and British media that the Turin side are planning to sell Italy Under-21 left-back Giorgio Chiellini to Manchester City.

"I would have been surprised if Chiellini had gone, I'm not surprised he's staying. I'm happy he's part of this squad," the coach said.

Inter Milan is favored to win its third straight title. AC Milan starts as European champion and without a point penalty. Juventus is back from Serie B, and AS Roma looks to improve after finishing in second place.

Add newly promoted Napoli and its passionate fans and history-laden Genoa, and the Italian Serie A appears poised to regain its swagger following a match-fixing scandal.

"This should be a dignified year for our soccer," league president Antonio Matarrese said. "We need to provide certainties in a country where all anyone talks about is soccer."

The season begins Saturday, when Juventus hosts Livorno and Torino is at Lazio. On Sunday, Inter opens at home against Udinese. Of the 20 Serie A clubs, 10 have new coaches.

Inter finished last season 22 points ahead of second-place AS Roma. Inter was helped by Juventus' relegation and an eight-point penalty for Milan. Lazio, Fiorentina and Reggina were also penalized last season.

Inter reinforced itself with the additions of David Suazo and Christian Chivu. Suazo is a speedy forward from Honduras who should complement physical forwards Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano. Chivu, who joined Inter from Roma, is coveted for his versatility and can play in central defense, left back or midfield.

Patrick Vieira, a physical presence in central midfield, is back after missing half of last season because of injury. Luis Figo, the 2001 FIFA player of the year, is back for one more season at Inter after a move to Saudi Arabia fell through.

Milan, fourth last season, returns the same roster. Its only significant additions were two Brazilians -- defensive midfielder Emerson and 17-year-old forward Alexandre Pato, who can't play until January.

"We don't need to make any acquisitions," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "The Champions League victory will give us a lot of spirit to start the season with."

Juventus, sent to the minors following the match-fixing investigation, could feature as many as seven new players in its starting lineup. Juventus also has a new coach: former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri.

Roma was second in the league and reached the Champions League quarterfinals-- its best showing in Europe in 23 years. What the club lacked was a deep bench.

The arrivals of Brazilian defenders Juan and Cicinho and midfielders Ludovic Giuly and Mauro Esposito could solve that problem.

Roma's city rival, Lazio, could be hard-pressed to duplicate its third-place finish from last season. Lazio's biggest move was bringing in Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo to replace the retired Angelo Peruzzi.

Fiorentina might have a hard time matching its performance from last season, when it would have finished third if not for a 15-point penalty. The main reason is the departure of high-scoring forward Luca Toni to Bayern Munich. Fiorentina brought in Christian Vieri to replace Toni, although at 34 Vieri is far removed from the player who led Italy with five goals at the 1998 World Cup.

Napoli, Diego Maradona's old club, is back in Serie A after a six-season absence. Genoa, Italy's first soccer club, returns to the top division after a 12-season absence.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon faces 10 days on the sidelines after injuring his groin, the club said on Monday.

Buffon was injured in Sunday's 1-0 win at Cagliari and will miss matches against Catania on Wednesday and Napoli on Saturday.

He is also a doubt for next Wednesday's Champions League trip to Minsk to play BATE Borisov of Belarus.

Juventus striker David Trezeguet could be out for as much as five months following knee surgery, the Serie A club said on Monday.

The Frenchman, who has quit international football, will undergo an operation on Tuesday after suffering an injury in last week’s Champions League win over Zenit St Petersburg.

“The recovery time goes from a minimum of three and a half months to a maximum of four or five months,” the club said in a statement, adding that the injury was not related to previous knee trouble.

Juve also said goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon would miss Wednesday’s home league game with Catania because of a thigh injury and that he was very doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Sampdoria.

Striker Alessandro Del Piero is fit to return against Catania, however, after missing Sunday’s 1-0 win at Cagliari where new forward Amauri scored his second goal in two league games.
