ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Reuters) - Drought-stricken peasant farmers tending their fields in southern Ethiopia got a nasty shock when the heavens opened and they were pelted by fish, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.
``The unusual rain of fish which dropped in millions from the air -- some dead and others still struggling -- created panic among the mostly religious farmers,'' the weekly Amharic newspaper said.
Saloto Sodoro, a fish expert in the region, attributed the phenomenon to heavy storms in the Indian Ocean which swept up the fish before shedding them on the unsuspecting farmers.
Southern Ethiopia has been in the grip of a severe drought for two years which aid officials say threatens the lives of up to 8 million people.

Ouch! Boys Lose Too Much in Circumcision Slip

ANKARA (Reuters) - Health workers carrying out a mass circumcision on more than 200 children in western Turkey cut off more than they should have when they got to the last two on Friday.
``Whether it was because of their anatomy or through carelessness, too much was cut off,'' Anatolian news agency quoted Manisa health service chief Ismet Nardal as saying.
Doctors in the hospital where the two-day circumcision marathon was carried out immediately operated on the pair to try to rectify the error.
``The children's stitched organs have held, the operation was successful,'' Nardal said. ``They appear to be alright, but it will only become apparent later if they have lost their sexual function.''
Young boys are circumcised in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey before they reach puberty, according to Islamic tradition.

Iranian Transsexual Unhappy With Experience As Woman

TEHRAN (Reuters) - An Iranian man who recently had a sex change to become a woman wants to reverse the operation because she finds life as a woman insufferable in Iran, a newspaper said Monday.
The 25-year-old Maryam, formerly Mehran, underwent a sex change last year, despite strong parental opposition.
But she soon regretted the decision, finding it difficult to cope with ``restrictions'' surrounding a woman's life in the conservative Islamic society.
``I can't go on living with the new identity, after years of living as a man with no restrictions,'' she told the daily Iran.
``First I thought I would get used to it, but life has become painful and intolerable. So I want a new sex change.''
Sex change operations are legal in Iran, but there are no provisions for would-be transsexuals to test out their new identity first.
The social reforms of President Mohammad Khatami -- elected in May of 1997 with overwhelming support of women -- have eased the lot of women somewhat.
But women still struggle under the burdens of a legal code and a value system that severely limits their freedom of action and subordinates them to husbands, brothers and fathers.
Iran has a mandatory dress code for women, requiring them to cover their hair and body. While men get on public transport through the front door, women must use the back door.
Courts give a woman's testimony only half the weight of that of a man and inheritance, divorce and child custody laws overwhelmingly favor men.
Official statistics show suicide rates among women far outstrips those of men -- the opposite of Western societies.

London s dung-spitting competition draws support, criticism

LONDON (CNN) -- Dung-spitting seems unlikely to ever gain acceptance as an Olympic sport, but you never know.
After all, contestants recently gathered in London for what was not the first but the second annual round of dung-spitting championships.
The fast-growing sport, which originated in Africa and begins with a fierce challenge for the best dung available, has drawn both support and criticism.
The support comes from those who say the contest is nothing but good "clean" fun. Critics say it's simply disgusting.

Prostitutes Do Housework Too

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romanian prostitutes, their business hit by economic recession, are trying to lure clients by offering to do household chores for them after having sex, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
The daily National quoted a ``sexual agent'' in Bucharest as saying that many women in the sex business had added cooking and house-cleaning to the repertoire of the world's oldest profession.
``We had to invent something because people don't have money and clients are rare. After solving the (sexual) problem, the girls clean and cook, for free. All on the house,'' he said.
``Men are happy because many of them live alone and the girls help them get rid of the three things which torment their lives: sex, cleaning and cooking,'' the agent said.
Prostitution is illegal in Romania but media reports suggest there are many prostitution rings operating across the country.

Leader Safe From Eggs at 180 Feet?

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Security guards watching over Brazil's president have concluded the leader of Latin America's largest nation will never have egg on his face -- but only if he stands 180 feet away from angry demonstrators.
The guards spent weeks studying exactly how far away an egg-thrower would have to be in order to miss hitting President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the daily Folha de Sao Paulo said.
Their study concluded that the safe location for the president was at a distance of 150 to 180 feet, even if targeted by a champion egg-thrower. At that distance, Folha said, a person's head would appear as large as a fly 12 feet away.
The tests were carried out after several top politicians were hit by eggs in recent months by demonstrators angry at government austerity measures.

Woman Gets Daughter to Serve Her Jail Sentence

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Thai woman convicted of a drug offence arranged for her adopted daughter to serve the sentence instead -- and now both face extra time in jail after the scam came to light.
The police and prison officials who conspired in the scam also faced jail, the Bangkok Post reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said police arrested 40-year-old Tim Nakponkham last week for allegedly possessing 840 methamphetamine pills, only to discover she should be in jail for a similar offence in 1998. It transpired her 28-year-old daughter Vasana was there instead, serving the sentence of nearly four years.
The paper said Vasana volunteered to serve the sentence ``to show her gratitude'' to her adoptive mother.
She now faces a five-year jail term, and her mother must serve the original sentence, plus another three years for avoiding imprisonment. Both also face an additional six months for contempt of court.
