A different time in Iran indeed. Old Tehran was a place that was a great mixture of European and contemporary home-grown Iranian architecture. From the Laalezaar Café, to Military Barracks, and the famous Istanbul Street, these old photographs transport you to a simpler time and place that our grandparents probably experienced.
Some of these photos are from the Bahaarestan Palace, Park-e Ataabak and also the Residence of the Royal Qajar family spanning from the late 1800’s into early 1930’s Tehran. There is a gate with the portrait of Reza Shah, pictures from the Toopkhooneh, the soldier’s club and also the Iranian army in World War II. There are shots of the Iranian military parade at the base of the mountains, and a very interesting portrait of the Shah’s statue with Persepolis army underneath. It is evident that the Shah tried very hard to connect himself to glory days of the Persian Empire.
Finally, the Persian National Society Orchestra is shown in 1948. This musical group was led by Rouhollah Khaleghi, who composed the Iranian national anthem that is so well known by every Iranian called 'Ey Iran' ('Oh Iran'). “Ey Iran” is very popular among all Iranians young and old and they all know the words. The song is still used in Iran today as the main Iranian national.
