Iranian-born artist to shine in LA
A varied selection of artworks by Y.Z. Kami, an Iranian-born artist in the US, will be showcased at the Gagosian Gallery of Los Angeles.
Y.Z. Kami is best known for his portraits of humble, unremarkable people who catch the eye of the viewer with their own. Their modesty and solitude unites us in an awareness of our mortality.
Having studied philosophy at the University of California and the Sorbonne, Kami echoes his Persian heritage and Sufi philosophy in a sculptural installation. Alabaster stones travel in a circular orbit, each one inscribed with verses from Mowlavi's Divan-e Shams .
The exhibition of figure painting, collage, Islamic architecture, photography and sacred and literary texts by the 51-year-old artist easily reveals the flux between matter and spirit, life and mortality, the outer layer and the inner soul that lie at the core of his works.
His work has been widely exhibited at venues including the Parrish Museum of Art (2007), the Museum of Modern Art (2006), the Istanbul Biennial (2005), the Deitch Projects (1998 , 1999, and 2001) and the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.
Beverley Hills's Gagosian Gallery hosts the exhibit from January 8 to February 9, 2008.
