    Nicolas Sarkozy & Carla Bruni

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has asked Italian former supermodel Carla Bruni to marry him, La Stampa newspaper said Tuesday quoting Bruni's mother.

"I am very happy for my daughter, it makes me very happy to see her so radiant and in love," Marisa Tedeschi Bruni was quoted as saying by the Italian daily.

La Stampa said it had confirmed with other sources that Sarkozy had proposed to the 39-year-old former fashion model who is now a pop singer in France. The French press has said Sarkozy is dating Bruni and the two were photographed together at the Paris Disneyland on Saturday.

Another unnamed friend quoted Bruni as saying: "It is all true, we have been together for one month," La Stampa said in its double page report on the relationship.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has begun a relationship with Carla Bruni, a former model, two months after divorcing his wife, Cécilia.

The president, 52, and Miss Bruni, 39, who is Italian, appeared happy to be photographed together with their respective children during a trip to Disneyland Paris at the weekend.

Reportedly a former lover of - among others - Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Donald Trump and an "eminent" French socialist, Miss Bruni has a "legendary reputation as a man-eater", according to Le Parisien.

News of the relationship was first posted on the website of the magazine l'Express, whose editor, Christophe Barbier, is a friend of the couple.

"She told me that the publicity surrounding this story did not bother her," he said. "From now on, it would become an affair, a public love story."

The couple may appear together on Thursday when Mr Sarkozy flies to Rome to meet the Pope, Barbier added. A spokesman for the Elysée Palace declined to comment.

However, Miss Bruni and Mr Sarkozy do not see eye to eye on every level: she is four inches taller than the 5ft 5in president, has spoken out against his "selective immigration" policies and voted for his Socialist rival Ségolene Royal in this year's presidential election. Some commentators quipped that this might be the most spectacular sign to date of his commitment to bi-partisan politics.

The pair reportedly met at a dinner held by advertising boss Jacques Séguéla last month in the gardens of the château de Versailles.

The news ends weeks of feverish speculation over Mr Sarkozy's private life, after rumours that he had been dating a Bosnian journalist and more recently, Laurence Ferrari, a French TV presenter. Miss Ferrari has sued two newspapers over the allegations.

Miss Bruni, whose full name is Carla Bruni Tedeschi, comes from a wealthy family. Her parents fled to France from Italy in 1973 when she was five to escape kidnapping threats from the Red Brigade, a Left-wing terrorist group.

An international model in the 1990s, she launched a successful singing career in 2002. Her first album, Quelqu'un m'a dit (Someone told me), with husky vocals on her libertarian lifestyle, sold two million copies.

Her second, No Promises, where she sings poems in English by W B Yeats, Dorothy Parker and Emily Dickinson was less successful.

She has a six-year-old son, Aurélien, whose father, Raphaël Enthoven, is a philosopher.

Mr Sarkozy's biographer, Catherine Nay, pointed out that with her long legs, high cheekbones and cat-like eyes, Miss Bruni bears a striking resemblance to Mr Sarkozy's former wife. "Men are often drawn to the same type of butterfly," she said.

Like Mrs Sarkozy, she has Latin roots, no French blood, and is from a family of musicians (her father was an opera composer and her mother was a concert pianist).

The apparent stage-managing of the Disney outing - coinciding with a poll putting Mr Sarkozy at his lowest popularity rating since his May election.

In an article entitled "Disney fairytale", Liberation newspaper suggested that "this paparazzified idyll" would do much to "re-gild the president's image after being abandoned to his ambitions by his (ex-) wife," who divorced him two months ago today.

The liaison will come as no surprise to Mr Sarkozy's mother, who told Point de Vue this month that her son would have no trouble finding a new woman after his divorce.

Andrée Sarkozy, 82, said the divorced president could have his pick of women, but that he should avoid marrying any of them. "I have had enough of brides," she said.

There have been reports that Cécilia Sarkozy is moving to London and would enrol their 10-year-old son, Louis, into the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle school in South Kensington. The school denied the reports.

Madonna sends her daughter, Lourdes, to the school, whose alumni includes the actresses Zoe Wanamaker and Joely Richardson.

PARIS (AFP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to marry his new girlfriend, the former model turned pop singer Carla Bruni, a French newspaper reported Sunday, claiming a wedding was "imminent."

Citing several anonymous sources, the Journal du Dimanche said the couple, currently on a private visit to Jordan at the invitation of King Abdullah II, are believed to have set a wedding date for either February 8 or 9.

Presidential spokesman David Martinon declined to comment on the front-page report, which was widely relayed on French radio and television.

Sarkozy, 52, and Bruni, 39 -- a rich heiress whose past conquests include rock stars Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton -- have been trailed by a swarm of paparazzi since their romance was first publicised in mid-December.

During a Christmas trip to Egypt, where their presence sparked a media stampede, the president reportedly gave Bruni an engagement ring -- a pink diamond heart -- while Bruni gave him a luxury Swiss watch in grey steel.

Newly divorced from his second wife Cecilia, Sarkozy has yet to comment publicly on his relationship with Bruni, but is expected to answer the media's questions at a New Year's press conference on Tuesday.

The report of marriage came as a poll showed Sarkozy's confidence rating slipping seven points -- a drop blamed in part on voter concerns about his highly-publicised new romance.

The couple were photographed on Saturday as they toured the rose-red city of Petra in southern Jordan, the president carrying Bruni's young son Aurelien on his shoulders.

Bruni may also accompany Sarkozy on an official trip to India late this month, according to local media, which said the government of the morally conservative country was struggling to find the right protocol to greet her.

Sarkozy became the first French president to divorce while in office when he ended his stormy 11-year marriage to Cecilia, with whom he has a 10-year-old son. He also has two sons, Pierre, 22, and Jean, 21, from a previous marriage.

An elegant brunette and heiress to a tyre fortune, with a reputation as a "man-eater," the former supermodel had a surprise hit with the release of her first pop album "Quelqu'un M'a Dit" (Someone Told Me) in 2004.

Politically she has placed herself on the left, telling a British newspaper last year that she would vote for Sarkozy's rival Segolene Royal in the May presidential election.

Bruni's mother Marisa Tedeschi Bruni -- who accompanied Sarkozy on a trip to the Vatican last month -- has been quoted in the Italian press saying the president had asked for her daughter's hand, and that she had gladly agreed.

While polls initially suggested a majority of voters saw Sarkozy's romance as a strictly private affair, there were growing signs the paparazzi fuelled coverage of his love life could be harming his confidence rating.

According to a CSA poll published Sunday in Le Parisien, 48 percent of voters say they trust the president to tackle France's problems, compared to 55 percent last month. Forty-five percent said they did not trust him, compared to 38 a month before.

CSA director Stephane Rozes said the slip chiefly reflected fears about the economy and falling disposable incomes, but probably also unease among older voters -- he fell 15 percent among the over-60s -- about his new romance.

"The intense media coverage of the president's private life, touching on the image of the presidential function, appears to bother (his) traditional supporters," Rozes told Le Parisien.

The left-wing opposition meanwhile accuses Sarkozy of putting his love life on display to deflect attention from France's economic troubles.

PRESIDENT Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni could prove to be an explosive combination, according to the latest book about their whirlwind romance, which claims that the Italian former supermodel and singer has just as volcanic a temperament as her husband.

The Italian, famous for a string of high-profile romances, “regularly” threw one former boyfriend’s belongings out of the window of their flat in Paris in the 1990s, says the book.

“She gets into a real rage, particularly with her boyfriends,” a close friend of Bruni was quoted as saying.

The latest in a series of books about the couple, Carla and Nicolas, the True Story, is unusual in that it appears to have the backing of Bruni, 40, who talks about her meeting with the French leader at a dinner party last November – “I wanted to marry him straight away,” she says – and an adolescence marked by a “curiosity about boys” and “various drugs”.

The authors, two respected journalists, describe a tempestuous two-year relationship with Arno Klarsfeld, a lawyer and son of the Nazi hunters Serge and Beate, whom she met on Concorde in 1994.

“She would regularly send her chéri’s things flying out of the window,” they write. “She was fed up at the sight of him in front of the television watching nature documentaries.”

Sarkozy, who is struggling to modernise France with a series of economic and social reforms, is also renowned for a volatile temperament. He has often given the impression of wanting to pick a fight with protesting workers and provoked outrage recently by telling a member of the public who refused to shake his hand to “sod off, poor jerk”.

Bruni, who claims in the book to have been undergoing psychoanalysis since the age of 29, is said to have “calmed down” the president even if he regards therapy as a waste of time and puts psychoanalysts “in the same category as fortune tellers”.

The president was apparently infuriated when his mother, who was initially opposed to the marriage, told an interviewer that “he [Sarkozy] has all too many to choose from”, suggesting that Carla was just the latest in a series of romantic adventures.

“Carlita”, as the president calls her, was just as smitten as her suitor. After being bombarded by gifts and demands for her hand in marriage, she told him that he must ask for the consent of Marine Delterme, an actress and one of her best friends, before she would say “oui”.

Delterme was having dinner with a group of friends in a restaurant when the president called to ask for the hand of her friend in marriage. Some around the table were sceptical but she gave her agreement. Bruni had her doubts, it turns out.

“The pressure is enormous,” she told one of her friends. “I’m afraid of losing all those who have supported me until now.” She was referring to allies on the political left, where Sarkozy has for long been regarded as a dangerous rightwinger.

Her last political boyfriend had been Laurent Fabius, a former Socialist prime minister. The book quotes a friend as saying that “it took him nine months to get over her”.

In the Elysée Palace Bruni has shown a territorial streak, particularly towards Rachida Dati, the justice minister and once the president’s favourite. Bruni has told Dati not to telephone or text her husband so early in the morning.

During a party, when the two women found themselves in view of the bed in the president’s private quarters, Bruni is reported to have commented: “You would have liked to occupy it, wouldn’t you?”

Last week Dati’s star appeared to be fading. She was excluded from a ministerial meeting with the president, and a magazine claimed that Yves Saint Laurent, the fashion designer who died last Sunday, had threatened legal action to recover clothes that his firm had lent her and that Dati, the daughter of a Moroccan bricklayer, seemed reluctant to part with.

Dati, whose bare shoulders had raised eyebrows at a banquet in Windsor Castle, also found herself at the centre of a controversy over the annulment of a marriage because the bride was not a virgin. She had backed the ruling but was forced to call for an appeal after protests.

Sarkozy came to her defence, claiming that she was being “lynched”. Carla has also denied wanting to get rid of her.

“I am not Cécilia. I don’t have a blacklist,” she is quoted as saying in the book. This was a reference to reports that before demanding a divorce, Sarkozy’s former wife had engineered the removal of presidential aides who had been disloyal to her.

Even so, Bruni’s welcome to Dati at the birthday party she organised for the president in January seemed lukewarm.

“I hesitated to invite you,” she apparently told the justice minister. “But finally I did.”

Nicolas Sarkozy -at home with Carla's sweetheart

This video is causing a stir in France because it shows a side of Nicolas Sarkozy that people don't usually see: the doting husband at home. We learn that Carla Bruni's term of endearment for him is "mon chou chou". An English equivalent of this quite proletarian phrase might be my sweetie, sweetie-pie, sweetheart, luv, darling and so on.

              [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E_Z1FUZpH4[/ame]

The video was taken during a session between Bruni and a group of readers invited by Femme Actuelle magazine. The President drops in on the women in their private quarters in the Elysée Palace. He and Carla make a great show of affection. Sarko says that he has just received the Iraqi prime minister and taken a shower after working out. They point out that they only live in those apartments at weekends. Their dogs are called Clara and Dumbledore, by the way.

On a related subject, Sarkozy could soon be joining British parliamentarians in the field of embarrassing expense claims. A magazine called Challenges reports today that the state auditors have caught him out charging an undisclosed amount of private items to his official expense account. No details have emerged yet but watch this space.
