Lionel Richie: 'Nerves' Make Nicole Thin

Nicole Richie's extreme weight loss is the result of nerves, not an eating disorder, her father, Lionel Richie, says in a 20/20 interview airing Friday night on ABC.

"Believe me," Richie says, "I've checked it out three different ways to Sunday. So, you know, I went to her, and I said, 'Okay, what is it? Is it really an eating disorder?' Because we went to a couple of doctors and the doctors said, 'Well, it's not an eating disorder. She's just – her nerves affect her in weight."

According to 20/20, Richie and Nicole were estranged for years, but their relationship is on the mend – Nicole even appears in the video for her dad's song "I Call It Love," from his new album, Coming Home.

Their estrangement, Richie says, came as a result of Nicole's heroin abuse. Richie says he and his then-wife, Diane Alexander, supported Nicole when she sought help, but at the same time, they were going through a difficult divorce that caused Nicole to rebel even further.

"They were dealing with their own thing," Nicole tells 20/20. "But I was also looking for some sort of authority, and when I realized that I could make my own decisions, then I kind of felt like I was an adult from there and that I could do whatever I wanted."

Richie reacted by cutting his daughter off from the family, including his two young children with Alexander. "He just really did not want my brother and sister to be around that kind of behavior," Nicole says. "So I was kind of cut off in that department until I got my act together."

Nicole got clean, and also told her father that she'd felt abandoned as a child when Richie was on the road during important times in her life. When Richie realized how he'd hurt his daughter, "It broke my heart," he says.

But the Richies are hoping to put all that behind them. "It's really great, and we have a really open and honest relationship," says Nicole. "I'm really happy that I'm on the end of it."

50 Cent Ticketed in New York City

50 Cent was pulled over by police Friday afternoon in New York City, PEOPLE has confirmed.

NYPD spokesperson Det. Madelyne Galindo tells PEOPLE the rapper (real name: Curtis Jackson) was handcuffed, escorted to a Manhattan police precinct and issued four tickets, for making an unsafe lane change, driving with an expired license, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

Galindo tells PEOPLE police observed him making an unsafe lane change – he didn't signal – in his Lamborghini at 8th Ave. and 34th St.

The officers pulled him over one block north at 35th St. and discovered that he did not have his license on him, nor did he have the registration or insurance information for the car.

He was escorted to a nearby police station to escape the crowd of onlookers that had gathered. "He was taken to the station only for safety reasons because a crowd gathered because of who he is," Galindo tells PEOPLE.

Galindo says 50 Cent was not fingerprinted or photographed, and said, "When we issue a summons it is in lieu of an arrest."

Galindo says she believes an officer drove the Lamborghini to the station. It was then relinquished to one of 50 Cent's friends, who had promptly arrived with the car's license and registration and a valid driver's license. Galindo says the entire ordeal was over before 3 p.m.

Brad: Angelina and I Will Wed When Everyone Can

Brad Pitt says that he and Angelina Jolie will get married – when all couples can legally wed.

"Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able," the actor tells Esquire magazine for its October issue.

Of course, the couple are already living in domestic bliss with their three children, Shiloh, who was born in May, Maddox, 5, and Zahara, 1.

Of the older two children, whom Jolie adopted and Pitt is in the process of legally adopting, the 42-year-old actor says the fact that they aren't his biological children doesn't set them apart from their sister, Shiloh.

"They're as much of my blood as any natural born, and I'm theirs," Pitt tells the magazine, which hits newsstands Sept. 19. "That's all I can say about it. I can't live without them. So: Anyone considering (adoption), that's my vote."

And Pitt says he's a pretty laid back dad.

"I try not to stifle them in any way," he says. "If it's not hurting anyone, I want them to be able to explore. Sometimes that means they're quite rambunctious."

Still, Pitt, whose next film is the drama Babel, says communication is the key with kids: "I feel it's really important to have that time to sit and talk to them," he continues. "I really like that last minute before they fade off. And always give them a heads-up before you jerk them out of something. You need to tell them, like, 'You have three more minutes.'"

          David Hasselhoff Sounds Off

For David Hasselhoff, it's been a year of ups and more than a few downs. Although the former Baywatch star, 54, was back in the spotlight as a judge on America's Got Talent, he also dealt with a nasty split from wife Pamela Bach, 43, a shaving accident that left his arm in a brace for seven weeks and tabloid rumors of public misbehavior.

In an exclusive interview, the man now referred to by many (including himself) as The Hoff sounded off to PEOPLE about plastic surgery, Pamela Anderson and more.

On whether he's had plastic surgery:
"I've never had anything like that. I have had Botox, everyone has. It's a shot. It takes out the frown. I haven't had that in a year. I take pride in that. I look great. I am going to keep this natural until I have to. I like Clint Eastwood, he waited until he was 75. He looks damn good."

On his former Baywatch costar Pamela Anderson:
"I love Pam. She's beautiful and smart. I don't know why she's messing with her bust size. It's ridiculous. She doesn't have to. I last saw her at a Superbowl party. She introduced me to people saying, 'This is the guy that made me famous.' Then another guy came up to us and she said, 'No, this is the guy who made me famous.' It was Hugh Hefner. We both just roared laughing.

On whether he'll wear the red Baywatch trunks again:
"Yes! I hope so. They're in development with the movie, and hopefully by the time we get it done, I won't be, like, running down the beach with a walker in my hand. But I notice there's a lot of lifeguards now that are still very active in their 60s."

On whether he would still run shirtless down the beach:
"Yeah. I would flab a little bit, but not much."

On his meeting with Princess Diana in 1993
"I felt like she was little girl caught up in this whirlwind. I saw this little girl who just wanted to be a person, but (was) caught in this shell.… She was smitten with me since I am so tall. I was smitten with her since she was so tall." Were there sparks? "Absolutely."

On fatherhood to daughters Hayley and Taylor-Ann
"They're the two most important people in my life. And if I can keep their respect and keep their hearts in a good place, then I know that I've done well. And I've got them there. And I've always had them there."

On what he wants on his gravestone:
" 'Been there, done that.' I was gonna say, 'Hoff and Running.' I was actually thinking of being buried under my Hollywood star, and then being buried like this (he looks up with frozen face). So people could look down and watch me decompose, you know. (Seriously though,) I think it'll just say 'Good friend, good father' – and, 'Had a blast.' "

              Toronto Diary: Reese Unveils Penelope

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing – with stars like Reese Witherspoon and Sacha Baron Cohen unveiling their latest offerings.

In all, 352 movies from 61 countries will unspool at this year’s festival, which runs until Sept. 16.

Oscar-winning actress, Witherspoon was wearing her producer's hat at Toronto. Well, not literally. On Friday night, her blond locks swung uncovered as she introduced Penelope, a whimsical fable produced by her production company, Type A. The movie, about a wealthy young woman born with a pig's snout for a nose, played by Christina Ricci, had its world premiere there at Roy Thomson Hall. Witherspoon herself has a minor – but amusing – role as a Vespa-riding delivery woman in the flick.

Before bringing Ricci and other cast members onstage, Witherspoon said she was particularly delighted to be debuting Penelope at the festival.

"It was at the Toronto Film Festival last year that I saw Walk the Line for the first time with an audience," she said, recalling the obviously happy memory. (She went on to win a Best Actress Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in the biopic about country star Johnny Cash.)

Penelope is just one of many films that have come to Toronto this year trailing significant buzz, either because of favorable showings at earlier festivals, such as Cannes or Telluride, or because they feature big name stars or controversial subject matter.

Several movies that rate high on the chatter meters – a few of which I've already seen – include:

              • Babel: Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett play an American couple traveling overseas in this ensemble drama, which spans the globe, touches on issues of terrorism, and shows how everyone is interconnected. The film had its debut at Cannes and is considered a possible Oscar Best Picture candidate. It's a worthy movie, but its parts work better than the whole.

              • Borat: Cultural Learnigs of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan: Yes, that is indeed the full title, though everyone is just calling it Borat, followed by, "You know, the one with that Ali G guy." That would be Sacha Baron Cohen, the audacious English funnyman who starred in HBO's Da Ali G Show and was the effete French racecar driver in this summer's Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (a mouthful in itself). In Borat, a hilarious comedy that sets new highs for rude and crude, Cohen plays a TV reporter from Kazakhstan who travels across America in hopes of meeting Pamela Anderson. How rude and crude? The final credits list one guy's job as "nude fight coordinator." Now, there's an occupation to which one can aspire.

              • A Good Year: This lightweight comedy marks the first re-teaming of star Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott since Gladiator in 2000. Set in the South of France, Year is about a hard-charging English businessman who inherits a French villa and vineyard. It's based on a novel by Peter Mayles. The film has the fizz of champagne and its impact is just as fleeting.

              • Infamous: If you liked Capote last year, get ready for deja vu. Infamous tells the identical story about what happened when novelist Truman Capote traveled from New York City to rural Kansas to report on a horrific real life murder case. Toby Jones, a little known British actor, plays tiny terror Capote and Sandra Bullock costars as pal Harper Lee. Infamous is good, just not quite as good as Capote.

              • Bobby: This ensemble drama, a still unfinished film that is being shown in Toronto as "a work in progress," is about the effect that the assassination of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy had on various people (mostly fictional) present at the Los Angeles hotel on that fateful night in June, 1968. Written and directed by Emilio Estevez, Bobby boasts a powerhouse cast, including Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Fishburne and Helen Hunt.

              • Stranger Than Fiction: This is a clever conceptual comedy that's lots of fun. It stars Will Ferrell as an IRS tax auditor whose life is being narrated, in a voice-over that only he can hear, by a novelist played by Emma Thompson. The impressive list of costars includes Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah.

With the exception of Penelope, all of the movies mentioned have distribution deals and will be opening in theaters in the next few months.

Jackie Chan 'Fed Up' With Martial Arts Roles

                The Associated Press

VENICE -- Jackie Chan has seen enough action.

The Hong Kong star told Press Association in Venice that he wants to be more than a martial arts master — and is ready for another challenge.

"I've been willing to change my roles for quite some time. I'm fed up with these roles," the 52-year-old actor was quoted as saying. "We all know that the life of an action movie actor is quite a short career. I already consider myself a myth for still being around today."

"I want to put myself to the test by interpreting and acting different characters," he said. "I would like people in (the) future to see my movies and consider me an actor who can act in action movies, not just someone who knows about martial arts and happens to be an actor."

Chan — whose screen credits include "Shanghai Noon" and "Shanghai Knights" — presented his latest movie, "Rob-B-Hood," at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.

"When people come up to me in the street in America they say `Ah, Jackie Chan!' and do all the action moves," he said. "No one does that to Robert De Niro."

                  Singer Sara Evans Shapes Up

Country star Sara Evans knew she had to shape up before she could sashay on this season's Dancing with the Stars (premiering Sept. 12) – so in between raising three kids with her husband, and touring with her band, Evans worked out with a trainer at home in Nashville.

The 35-year-old singer, who also did five-day-a-week dance sessions with partner Tony Dovolani near her summer house in Salem, Ore, shares her fitness diary with PEOPLE.

Aug. 9 The main thing I have to get used to is listening to Tony. For one, he does not want me to drink at all. At all! And I’ll let my body go through the wringer, but I have a hard time sacrificing a beer or a glass of wine at night. Then he told me he wants me to do about 15 minutes of ab work every day; I do crunches on a fitness ball. He also wants me to do cardio, and so every day I try to do this 2 1/2-mile path on the country roads with my sister-in-law.

Aug. 15 Certain muscles of mine have been awakened that have been sleeping for a long time. It's very different being in shape for a tour versus getting in shape to dance. For a tour, my goal is to look great in jeans. For dance, you start going, "Oh my gosh, this area really needs work." I think every girl is constantly looking at her arms and that little bit of flab. On tour I can wear a shirt and no one will see it. But with dancing, every inch of your body is looked at very closely.

Aug. 19 Today we worked on Latin dances, and, boy, did I feel it in my lower back and my abs – my aching abs! At home the kids just wanted to jump into my arms. They don't get it that Mom's abdomen hurts so bad she can't even raise her arms to get a glass out of the kitchen cabinet.

Aug. 21 I am not so concerned now with how I look when I dance – I can feel it in my body if I'm using proper form. But there are days I'm tired and lose my form and feel soreness in my lower back. That pain is a reminder to do the ab work Tony suggested. You need to have your core strong to be a dancer; I wish I'd done Pilates or yoga before I started this!

Aug. 22 I'm feeling a lot more fit and energized. I think I've lost a few pounds already. I'm not sure how much because I'm not really into hopping on the scale. I'd rather go by how I feel, and right now I feel great. I can even see a bit more tone in my legs. I’d love to develop six-pack abs, but I don’t know how realistic that is after having three C-sections!

Nothing Is Missing from Lindsay's Handbag

Lindsay Lohan's allegedly stolen Hermes handbag has been returned to her – with nothing missing.

"A handbag handed in earlier has been returned to its owner," a Scotland Yard spokesperson tells PEOPLE (British police do not release names). "The owner has been informed that no property was taken, and the item is being treated as recovered lost property. We're pleased to report that's the end of it."

Lohan's rep confirmed to PEOPLE that the handbag recovered at London's Heathrow Airport on Thursday belonged to the actress. "Yes, it was hers," Leslie Sloane Zelnik said of the orange Hermes handbag, which was found on airport property.

According to a spokesperson for Scotland Yard, a "member of the public" contacted police and the bag was handed in. "Inquiries are continuing about whether anything was taken," said the rep.

Lohan, 20, allegedly noticed that one of her pieces of luggage was missing and notified authorities, TMZ.com reported Thursday.

"(The) theft of a bag at Heathrow Airport was reported to police by a 20-year-old woman," a Scotland Yard rep told PEOPLE. "It is alleged that as the woman exited the Terminal One building she noticed that an orange Hermes handbag was missing from her suitcase trolley."

Lohan's handbag contained "a quantity of jewelry," according to authorities.

The actress has been in Europe with boyfriend Harry Morton for the premiere of her upcoming film Bobby at the Venice Film Festival.

Katie Couric's Ratings Slip as Week Wears On

Katie Couric may have been closely observed by media analysts as she debuted as network TV's first solo anchor last week, but how well-watched by the public was CBS's new star of its Evening News?

Pretty good, as it turns out, though her numbers dropped as the week wore on.

Some 13.6 million viewers watched Couric's first show, on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Wednesday's newscast drew 10.13 million; Thursday's, 9.48 million.

Even with that drop, reports MediaWeek magazine, Couric still beat NBC's usually top-rated Nightly News with Brian Williams, and ABC's typically second-ranked World News Tonight, with Charles Gibson.

NBC's slippage is partially blamed on the fact that some markets pre-empted the news show on Thursday night, Sept. 7, with the start of the National Football League season and a classic match-up between the Dolphins and the Steelers.

Saying that CBS executives find the news about Couric to be encouraging, the trade publication also says that Katie's addition to the newscast helped expand viewership by 84 percent compared to a year ago. And in the 25-54-year-old age range, the program improved 95 percent (3.9 million vs. 2 million).

Overall, last week brought CBS its biggest ratings for the show since the coverage of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan on Feb. 16, 1998.

This week's looming question: How will Couric's successor on the Today show, Meredith Vieira, fare with viewers? The veteran of The View starts Wednesday.

Jessica Simpson: I Scare Guys Away

It's hard to believe that Jessica Simpson would have trouble finding a date, but that's what she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Monday.

"I think I'm too hard to be in love with," Simpson, 26, told DeGeneres. "It ends up on the cover of every magazine. I scare people away. I'm a lot to take on."

She recently dated singer John Mayer, but the relationship has cooled off. "The explosive media attention … put a chill (on the romance)," a close source told PEOPLE. But "there's still a chance. They're still talking."

Simpson also told DeGeneres she has no regrets about her three-year marriage to Nick Lachey (they split in November 2005). "I'm so proud of that relationship that I was in," she said. "I'm proud of the marriage that I had and I think that Nick is an amazing man.

"I regret nothing and it made me who I am right now," she continued. "And right now who I am, I am so in love with. I am so happy with who I am. It's all about the journey."

Simpson did say she's ready to be in a relationship. "I wish I was in love," she told DeGeneres. "I need to be in love." And even though her celebrity intimidates potential suitors, she says: "I'm a good person – I promise!"

She also said that despite the title of her new album, A Public Affair, it's not about her relationship with Lachey, but about living her life in the spotlight.

"A Public Affair, as a title, is kind of raunchy in way, because I'm trying to trick people into buying it, because sex sells," she laughed. "But it's not about that at all!"

In fact, another Hollywood icon was the inspiration for the title, she said. "I was actually watching a Brigitte Bardot special and it was about how her life was always a public affair, and she could never have anything to herself that's private – and that's how I felt at that very moment."

Still, Simpson conceded that the album's tone was influenced by the events unfolding in her life. "During the (beginning of) making of the record I was married. I was writing love songs," she said. "After going through an emotional time, I needed to have fun, to go out with my girls and shake my booty."

KISS singer/guitarist Paul Stanley and his wife, Erin Sutton, have welcomed a baby boy, the musician's rep has confirmed to PEOPLE.

Colin Michael Stanley was born in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 6, and weighed in at 8 lbs. 6 oz.

"Lucky for him, he looks just like his mother," Stanley tells PEOPLE.

This is the first child for Stanley, 54, and Sutton, 34, who wed last November. The rocker has another son, Evan Shane Stanley, from his previous marriage to Pamela Bowen.

Stanley, who co-founded KISS with Gene Simmons, is due to release his second solo album, Live To Win, on Oct. 24. His latest tour kicks off Oct. 21 in Atlanta and will wrap up in Los Angeles Nov. 14. Sutton is an attorney.

Anna Nicole's Son Dies, Daughter Is Born

Daniel Smith, the 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith, died suddenly in the Bahamas on Sunday, three days after the former Playboy Playmate gave birth to a girl, according to a statement from Smith's attorney.

Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, tells PEOPLE Daniel was visiting his mother at Doctors Hospital when he was found in her room at about 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

"He was found in a condition of non-responsiveness," Ferguson says. "I am not certain who made the alarm, and doctors were called in but he was pronounced dead."

Ferguson says police officers were called to the scene, but there was no evidence of foul play: "There were no signs of violence to the body and there has been no sign of any unusual activities in the room that he was in."

An autopsy was being performed Monday afternoon and police were awaiting its results before determining a cause of death. Despite some newspaper reports, "We have no information about a heart attack at this time," Ferguson tells PEOPLE.

Daniel Smith, who often appeared on his mother's E! reality program The Anna Nicole Show, was in the Caribbean nation where his mother, 38, gave birth to a girl on Thursday, her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, said in a statement.

A statement posted on Smith's official Web site, annanicole.com, reads, "On Sept. 7 Anna Nicole gave birth to a healthy 6 lb., 9 oz. baby girl. Her son Daniel was in the Bahamas with her to share in the joy of his baby sister when he passed away suddenly on the morning of Sept. 10.

"We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor. Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being. Please do not make any press inquiries at this time so that Anna Nicole can grieve in peace."

Daniel's father, Smith's ex-husband Billy Smith, tells TV's Extra of the death of his son, "It's so sad. I hated that it happened. He was so young. I'm sort of in shock right now." According to Extra, Billy Smith had not seen his son since Daniel was two years old and last spoke to his ex-wife in 1996.

Smith, who earlier this year won a U.S. Supreme Court decision to claim her stake in the will of her late husband, billionaire J. Marshall Howard, has not publicly named the father of her second child.

Britney Spears & Kevin Federline Have a Boy

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have welcomed their second son together, a source close the family has confirmed to PEOPLE.

The baby boy, who was born just before 2 a.m. Tuesday at a Los Angeles hospital, was delivered via a scheduled C-section.

"Kevin had a smile on his face. He looked happy and upbeat," says an observer.

The whole thing, says a source, was smooth – just as the mom-to-be had predicted to PEOPLE back in August, saying childbirth "will be a piece of cake."

Spears, 24, and Federline, 28, already have a son, Sean Preston, who was born Sept. 14 last year. For Federline, the new arrival is his fourth child. He also has a daughter Kori, 4, and son Kaleb, 2, with actress Shar Jackson.

Spears first publicly confirmed this pregnancy during a May 9 visit to the Late Show with David Letterman. "Don't worry, Dave, it's not yours," she joked to the host, who responded: "Oh. Well, I think that's good news for both of us."

The birth of their second child comes as Spears and Federline celebrate their second anniversary: The couple wed on Sept. 18, 2004. The pair began talking about starting a family soon after. "I can see myself as a mom. Next year at 23, I am so there," she told PEOPLE shortly after the wedding.

Just four days short of the couple's first wedding anniversary, she had accomplished that goal by having Sean Preston.

The timing of baby No. 2's arrival may have been a surprise – Spears has said the pregnancy wasn't planned – but expanding her brood was never a question for the domesticity-craving pop star. Sean Preston "is going to be traveling on the road with me, so I think it will be good to have (a sibling) there with him," she told PEOPLE last month.

For Federline's part, the aspiring rapper told PEOPLE after his performance at the Teen Choice Awards last month, that he planned to take time off until after the baby was born. "I'm really going to kick back and wait and see when this baby is going to come, spend my time with my family and my wife," he said.

As for being pregnant a second time so quickly after the first, Spears said she's been happy to indulge her cravings for ice chips and chocolate, but having gained some 40 lbs., has also been frustrated at not having time to get back into the shape she was before becoming a mom. "I feel like I've been pregnant for 10 years!" she said.

Spears vowed that after the birth of her second child she'd get back to the gym – and back to work. "I'm definitely going to start working out in a huge way," she told PEOPLE last month.

Plus, the singer, whose last original album was 2003's In the Zone, is working on a new album due next year, which she describes as "cooler than ever – fun, upbeat and sexy."

Real Corpse Found on CSI: New York Set

Things got a bit too realistic on the set of CSI: New York on Tuesday, where an actual mummified body was discovered inside the building where production was underway.

Though downtown Los Angeles was subbing for the streets of New York, the corpse was real, a source close to the show tells PEOPLE, who says the remains were found on the 5th floor of the building – only two floors below the actors and film crew.

The body, the source says, "was discovered by a building engineer who checked on the tenant because he had not paid rent for the month."

Making matters weirder is that the show has already shot an episode revolving around the discovery of a mummified body.

Though the show's stars – Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes – were not on location at the time of the discovery, day players and the stunt people were.

Police and representatives from the coroner's office, who will perform an autopsy, soon joined them.
