Whitney & Bobby: Inside Their Split

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's 14-year marriage was always turbulent – they dealt with trips to rehab, rumors of infidelity and run-ins with the law. So what made them finally call it quits?

A relative of Brown's says the problems started last fall. "The relationship just spiraled out of control," the relative tells PEOPLE in its new issue. "They fought like cats and dogs. They would fight about what to eat for dinner, about who wasn't cleaning out the dishwasher. Stupid things. But they were always yelling."

Then things took a more serious turn in March when Brown's sister Tina told The National Enquirer that Houston was a drug addict. (Although Houston has never publicly addressed the Enquirer story, she most recently underwent rehab in April 2005; Brown did the same in 2000.)

Another source says the "final straws" involved recent tabloid reports that Brown, the target of persistent cheating rumors, has been carrying on a longtime affair with Karrine Steffans, who claimed Brown as one of her conquests in her 2005 kiss-and-tell book Confessions of a Video Vixen. (Steffans told New York's Daily News last week that she is not a "homewrecker" and denied having anything to do with the breakup.)

"I am not going to pretend that Bobby was a perfect husband – he's not," says the Brown relative. "But it's not like he just ran around with anyone. The marriage was broken."

But Victor "GV" Dugue, who is working on Brown's upcoming album, says that given the exes' equally outsized, "crazy" personalities, the relationship has always been volatile and that the current split may prove to be just another bump in the long and winding road. "Both of them are very emotional," he says. "They're arguing one second; the next minute, they're laughing again."

As Brown himself told PEOPLE in January, "They say opposites attract, but we're not opposites. We're one person." Adds the Brown relative: "Right now they're both angry, but there's a thin line between love and hate. They're going to always have a place in each other's lives."

      Orlando Bloom: Shy Guy?

Shy is the name of Orlando Bloom's character in the gritty thriller Haven, and it's also a fair description of the actor.

British-born Bloom, 29, talked to PEOPLE about his embarrassment doing love scenes, keeping his own love life private – and Marlon "Hottie" Brando.

Your costar Zoë Saldaña tells us that kissing you was 'gross.' How could she?
I hated kissing Zoë too! I was like, "Take your tongue out of my mouth, please. Your boyfriend is standing right there." Most people think kissing beautiful costars must be great. But it's always awkward, man.

Haven, about doomed teenage love on Grand Cayman, is darker than your big blockbusters. Did that appeal to you?
Some people have said it's too hard-core for teenage audiences. But it deals with (real) issues. You go on vacation, sit by the pool, go to the bar. . . . In this movie you get to see the underbelly of . . . the Cayman Islands.

You've reportedly split with Kate Bosworth.
People always ask me whether (we're) together or not. It's still nobody's business.

Fair enough. Can you give us an update on Pirates of the Caribbean?
We're in the middle of part 3. I've loved working on Pirates, but I'm looking forward to new projects. When you do a movie that's so successful, people think that's all you've done. "Oh, he's that pirate guy!"

      Or 'that heartthrob guy?'
That doesn't bother me. Name any of my heroes, and they were hotties. Brando was a pinup, so was James Dean, Paul Newman. I'm not going to (rest) on my "teen hottie" laurels. I have aspirations to do more than that. (Still) they're very loyal fans, those teenage girls! I definitely appreciate them.

Clay Aiken Speaks Out About Rumors

Clay Aiken is no longer the charmingly awkward, self-confessed "dork" who came in second on 2003's second season of American Idol. He has a new look, a new album – A Thousand Different Ways, which hit stores Tuesday – and some new, hard-won wisdom.

"I learned this year that you can't make people like you or care about you or love you," the 27-year-old, Southern Baptist-bred singer, whose 2003 debut album Measure of a Man sold 2.6 million copies, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

"I'm becoming a man, not just with my hair," he says, laughing about his darker, longer 'do, "but with my life. This year's been an education: the education of Clay."

He's also aware of what people have been saying about him this year, and in the new issue of PEOPLE (on newsstands Friday), he addresses rumors about his sexuality and more. Here's a preview:

On whether he's gay: "What do you say (to that question)? … It's like when I was 8. I remember something would get broken in the house, and Mom and Dad would call me in and say, 'Did you do this?' Well, it didn't matter what I said. The only thing they would believe was yes. … People are going to believe what they want."

On the panic attacks he suffered after Idol: "I'd walk into a room and say to myself, 'I am not going to have a problem when these people stare at me.' … But then (in) that situation, my heart would start pumping, and I'd start sweating and looking around nervously and shaking. I felt like I was going to have a heart attack."

On taking the anti-anxiety drug Paxil: "I said (to my doctor), 'Listen, I don't want to go to a therapist. I have nothing against therapists. I want to think I can do this on my own.' And she recommended that I try a medication. … Now I can sit here; I can go into a store; I can handle a photo shoot. I'm able to get rid of all that stuff in the periphery. It makes everything easier."

On the future: "I want to be a father so badly. I want (kids) one day. Not now. … I would love to adopt. There's an orphanage not too far from my house, and I've been up before with church. I always thought, 'What happens to those kids who have the potential to go to college but just can't afford it?' I've been thinking a lot lately about finding a way to pay for one of those kids to go to college."

Janet Jackson: I Don't Talk to Justin

Janet Jackson hasn't spoken to Justin Timberlake since the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl – but she plans to reconcile with him in her own time, she revealed on The Oprah Winfrey Show Monday.

"We haven't spoken. But I consider him a friend, and I'm very loyal, and friendship is very important to me," Jackson, 40, told Winfrey. "He has reached out to speak with me. Like I said, friendship is very important to me – and certain things you just don't do to friends. And in my own time, I'll give him a call."

Asked if she felt Timberlake failed to stick up for her after the incident, in which he ripped her bustier, exposing her breast to millions of viewers, Jackson replied, "To a certain degree, yeah."

Jackson, who releases her album 20 Y.O. on Tuesday, feels that she unfairly bore the brunt of the criticism after the Super Bowl performance – a sentiment Timberlake seems to agree with. "If there was something I could have done in her defense that was more than I realized then, I would have," he told MTV recently. "I probably got 10 percent of the blame."

Still Jackson says she was shocked at the intensity of the scrutiny over the incident, which she deemed an accident. "So much more important things were going on in the world. And the focus was on my breast? That didn't make any sense to me."

There's also another prominent man in Jackson's life who she hasn't been in contact with: her brother, Michael. The siblings haven't spoken since Michael was acquitted of child-molestation charges in June 2005 – a trial that Jackson says "took its toll on (the) entire family."

But Michael isn't completely out of touch. "He keeps in touch with Mother," Jackson says, "so we know what's going on with him."

In her own life, Jackson says she couldn't be happier after losing 60 lbs. and finding love with her producer boyfriend of five years, Jermaine Dupri.

Before she lost the weight, which Jackson says she gained for a film role, "The only time I felt okay is when I was sleeping, because I was lying down," she says. "So when I would get up, my ankles would swell all the time and my knees would hurt." Eventually, she says, she slimmed down with daily workouts and a strict diet.

As for Dupri, Jackson says their relationship is "unconditional love."

"It's so funny," she said, "because people I don't even know will come up to me and say, 'We would always see you smile but could tell that weren't happy deep down inside. And now when we see you, your eyes just beam with love and happiness.'"

Jackson and Dupri, 34, who also appeared on the broadcast, said they would like to have kids, and soon. "I'd love to, God willing, someday," Jackson said. "I guess that's gotta be soon. I'm 40." (The couple made headlines over the summer by hinting at plans to get married.)

Pressed by Winfrey who asked if they planned to have just one child or, perhaps, many, Dupri joked, "We're going to do the Jacksons over!"

Julie Andrews to Receive Top SAG Award

Julie Andrews, the legendary actress and singer who is perhaps best known as the beloved star of 1965's The Sound of Music, will be honored with a Life Achievement Award at the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in January, it was announced Monday.

"Julie Andrews is a woman of great generosity, creativity, courage, elegance and wit," SAG President Alan Rosenberg said in a statement. "She embodies and transcends the memorable roles she has created. Julie has been a positive presence in my life and continues to inspire multiple generations. I believe it is exceptionally significant to be recognized by people who do the same work you do."

Andrews, who was born and raised in England, won an Academy Award in her movie debut as the magical, flying governess in 1964's Mary Poppins. She got another Oscar nod for 1983's Victor/Victoriaa.

Younger film audiences may know Andrews best as the voice of Queen Lillian in Shrek 2, a role she is reprising for Shrek 3, due out next summer. She also starred opposite Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries.

In addition to acting and singing, Andrews is an author and has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women for 15 years.

She and her husband, filmmaker Blake Edwards, have been married for nearly 37 years.

The 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007.

                Scrubs Actress Recovering After Fall

Scrubs actress Judy Reyes is on the mend after suffering a fracture after an accidental fall, her rep, Monique Ward, tells PEOPLE.

Reyes, 37, who plays nurse Carla Espinosa on the NBC comedy, will be released from the hospital Monday. "She's going to be fine," Ward says. "She had an accidental fall at home and fractured her pelvis on Wednesday.

"She had surgery to repair it on Thursday. She didn't realize it was as bad as it was and still went to work. Once there, she realized she needed medical treatment. She went to a hospital from the set."

Reyes will be on crutches for about six weeks but is expected to shoot some scenes while she heals, while other parts of the filming schedule will be reworked so that she can complete her scenes at a later date, reps for the actress and the show confirm.

                  Paris Hilton Charged with DUI

Paris Hilton has been charged with two misdemeanors – driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher, Los Angeles city attorney's spokesperson Frank Mateljan tells PEOPLE.

She is scheduled for arraignment Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in L.A., but is not required to attend the hearing. The maximum punishment for a first-time DUI is a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail.

"I'd be very surpised if she does any jailtime," says Lawrence Taylor, an L.A.-based attorney with 30 years experience handling DUI cases. "If she pleads guilty, she'd likely pay a fine, attend DUI school and be on probation for three years."

A rep for Hilton had no comment.

Hilton, 25, was arrested on Sept. 7 shortly before 12:30 a.m. for "driving erratically," LAPD officer Martha Garcia told PEOPLE at the time. The heiress, who has been driving her silver Mercedes-Benz SLR in Hollywood, took a Breathalyzer test showing her blood alcohol level to be 0.08, the minimum required for a DUI arrest in California.

Hilton, who was briefly handcuffed, was released at 3 a.m. on her own recognizance and was driven home by her publicist, Elliot Mintz.

"Paris regrets the entire event," Mintz told PEOPLE. "She had never been arrested before, so to go through the police procedure was very disorienting for her. It was personally humiliating for her; she is not taking it lightly or frivolously."

Later that morning, Hilton called in to Ryan Seacrest's radio show on L.A.'s 102.7 KIIS FM to explain the incident, saying she hadn't eaten anything the day of her arrest and had worked for hours on the set of her new music video.

She drank one margarita at an event that evening, she said, and was on her way to a fast-food restaurant with Kimberly Stewart, Rod Stewart's daughter. "I'm in my SLR, which is a little fast, so maybe I was speeding a little bit and I got pulled over," she said.

Asked by Seacrest if she had been driving erratically, Hilton replied, "No, I was just really hungry and I wanted to have an In-N-Out burger!"

Terri Irwin: 'I've Lost My Prince'

Terri Irwin, the widow of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, has been taking life "one minute at a time" since his death on Sept. 4, she says in a new interview.

Speaking with Barbara Walters for an episode of ABC's 20/20, which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET, Irwin reveals that she learned of her husband's death in a phone call from her brother-in-law. "I remember thinking, 'Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't say it,' " she tells Walters. "I looked out the window and (daughter) Bindi was skipping, skipping along outside the window. And I thought, 'Oh, my children.' He wouldn't have wanted to leave the children."
Steve Irwin died when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was filming on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Terri Irwin, his wife of 14 years, says she doesn't blame him for what happened. "I knew it was an accident," she says. "It was like running with a pencil. It was not a risk he was taking. It was not a superhuman feat. It was just an accident."

Irwin says she has not seen footage of the stingray attack, nor does she want anyone to see it. Asked if it might ever be shown on TV, she replies, "Oh, it won't be. No. No. What purpose would that serve?"

John Stainton, Steve's longtime business partner and friend, who was with him on the day he died, adds: "It should never be aired. It's just a horrible piece of film tape."

In the three weeks since Steve's death, Terri Irwin says she's been living "one minute at a time, sometimes an hour at a time, with great faith, great determination."

Her children – Bindi, 8, and Robert, almost 2 – are her priority, she says, although she's also coming to terms with her own grief. "I'm really trying," she says. "I've lost my prince."

                    Steve Irwin

Photo by: Justin Sullivan / Getty
Her faith, she says, is keeping her strong: "I have tremendous faith in God that all things happen for a reason, even if we don't understand. I have two beautiful children. And they really are my strength."

Bindi, who is following in her father's footsteps with a series being developed for the Discovery Network called Bindi the Jungle Girl, was inconsolable at first, Irwin says.

"She cried and cried and cried. And I said, We're still a family. Daddy still loves you. And we have to stay together and get each other through this. We can understand the grief, and we can live with the grief. But we will not be victims of this grief. We will be wildlife warriors like Steve Irwin."

                      Anna's Lawyer: I'm the Baby's Dad

Howard K. Stern, the lawyer for Anna Nicole Smith, said Tuesday that he's the "proud father" of her baby girl, who was born just days before her 20-year-old son Daniel died in the Bahamas.

Stern, who was with the family in the hospital the night Daniel died, told CNN's Larry King that the newborn has been Anna Nicole's "one ray of hope" following the tragedy.

The child, he said, is "the one thing that is really keeping her going. And through it all, even with all the pain, she has been a great mom, a very attentive mom."

Daniel Smith, 20, died in his mother's hospital room Sept. 10 while visiting her three days after she gave birth to the baby girl. Authorities are still awaiting toxicology test results to determine the cause of death.
Cyril Wecht, a pathologist hired by Anna Nicole to perform a second autopsy, confirmed that Daniel had taken "therapeutic levels" of the antidepressant Lexapro, but Stern said Tuesday: "We also now have an indication that there may have been other prescriptive medication in his system but we don't know, you know, if that would have contributed to his death or not."

As for his relationship with Anna Nicole, Stern said: "We love each other and it's been going on for a very long time and because of my relationship as her lawyer, we felt it was best to keep everything hidden. And we've done a pretty good job of that."

When King asked Stern if he planned to marry Smith, he replied, "I've loved her for quite some time and hopefully the feeling's mutual. At some point, we will. Right now we have to somehow get through what we're going through."

                        Lost Actor's Traffic Charges Dropped

Traffic charges against Lost's Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje have been dropped, the Associate Press reports.

Defense attorneys were able to prove that the actor, who plays Mr. Eko on the ABC series, has a valid driver's license. He was stopped on Sept. 2 in Waikiki and charged with driving without a license and disobeying an officer.

After his arrest, police said Akinnuoye-Agbaje, 39, spent slightly more than six hours behind bars before being released on $500 bail and told to appear in district court on Sept. 26.

Other Lost cast members have had driving-related troubles: Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol last year. Josh Holloway, Dominic Monaghan, Naveen Andrews, Ian Somerhalder, Christian Bowman and Harold Perrineau have been cited, but not arrested, for traffic violations.

Reverend Run's Baby Dies at Birth

The baby daughter of rap legend Reverend Run and his wife Justine died at birth.

Run (real name: Joseph Simmons) issued the following statement on Wednesday through MTV: "On September 26, 2006, Victoria Anne Simmons for some unknown reason chose to come early and unfortunately did not survive.

"We must accept whatever is there and once you accept unconditionally, then everything is beautiful. Every pain has a purifying effect."

The baby was delivered Tuesday at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., the Associated Press reports. Justine Simmons is fine.

Run, a founding member of the seminal rap group Run-D.M.C., and his wife married in 1994, and have two sons Daniel (Diggy) and Russell II (Russy). Run's three older children, Vanessa, Angela and Joseph Jr., are from a previous relationship.

The family stars in the MTV reality series Run's House, which follows the minister and his wife as they raise their five children. The show was picked up for a second season, which began airing in June. Rev. Run was ordained a minister by the nondenominational New York City church Zoe Ministries in Aug. 1995.

                            Wecht: Meds Killed Daniel Smith

The death of Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son Daniel was caused by a lethal combination of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro, pathologist Cyril Wecht has revealed to PEOPLE.

Wecht said the drugs caused the cardiac dysrhythmia that led to Daniel's death. Wecht got the toxicology results from National Medical Services in Willow Grove, Pa., today.

"In my opinion it's an accidental death," Wecht tells PEOPLE.
Wecht said that because Daniel was taking three drugs and not a large dose of a single drug, paired with the fact that he was celebrating a happy occasion with his mother, those factors point to a "tragic accidental drug death."

Asked why Daniel may have been taking methadone, which is sometimes used to help heroin addicts end their addiction, Wecht said the drug is "a legitimate prescription drug for pain relief" and that Daniel had "no known history of morphine addiction."

Wecht was not sure if Daniel had a prescription for Zoloft, though it is known that he'd been taking the antidepressant Lexapro.

Daniel Smith died in his mother's hospital room Sept. 10 while visiting her in the Bahamas three days after she gave birth to a baby girl named Dannielynn Hope.

Smith's longtime lawyer, Howard K. Stern, revealed Tuesday that he is the father of the little girl.

On Sept. 9, Daniel Smith arrived in Nassau to see his mother, with whom he'd always been extremely close. The family, including his newborn sister, spent time bonding in the hospital room that night. Daniel was seen tending to his mother around 6:20 a.m. on Sept. 10 – but at 9:38 a.m. that day Anna Nicole woke up to find her son unresponsive.

Doctors were immediately summoned and tried for 22 minutes to revive Daniel without success. He was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.

Days after Daniel's death Anna Nicole's Bahamian attorney, Michael Scott, described her as "overwhelmed" by grief. "She's trying to come to grips with the depths of her despair," he said.

Stern, who appeared on Larry King Live Tuesday, said Anna Nicole's baby daughter is "the one thing that is really keeping her going.

"Through it all, even with all the pain, she has been a great mom, a very attentive mom," he said.

                              Olivia Newton-John Moves On

On his last day before he disappeared at sea, Patrick McDermott was gardening in the backyard of the Malibu home he shared with his love of eight years, Olivia Newton-John.

Now, more than a year after he vanished – leaving his driver's license, wallet and car keys aboard the Freedom, an overnight charter fishing boat that departed Los Angeles on June 30, 2005 – a stone labyrinth stands in his place. Newton-John built the winding path as a private memorial where she can go to feel close to the man she says was "the most romantic person I've ever known."

"He loved this garden and there are a lot of things here that remind me of him," says Newton-John, 58, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. "So he is here."

It's a reflection of Newton-John's enduring positive spirit that despite the pain of the past 15 months she has emerged more hopeful and loving. This month she releases a new CD, Grace and Gratitude, which was inspired by her loss of McDermott, a cameraman she met on a commercial shoot.
McDermott won her heart on a special Valentine's day when he planned a "magical mystery tour" for the Australian singer. Leaving cards hidden as clues around Malibu, McDermott guided the Grease star to the beach where he waited for her in a tent with a bottle of champagne. "That's typical of the man he was," she says.

The songs on Grace and Gratitude, which use Eastern influences such as sacred Tibetan and Japanese chants, are unlike anything Newton-John has performed before. "It's been a difficult year and this music I've been creating has really been part of my healing," she says. "The whole CD is a spiritual type of journey."

The journey began in July 2005 when McDermott's ex-wife, Yvette Nipar, called Newton-John to tell her McDermott had gone missing. "I've been through cancer and divorce. Nothing compares to this," she says.

Long daily walks with her faithful companion, Jack, a 9-year-old Irish setter, allowed her to survive the pain, though she realized she could not get through it alone.

"I took antidepressants for six months. I had to," she says. But she is quick to add that the healing only really began when she stopped taking the medication. "Once you go off them you can deal with it better," she says. "It's important to go deeply into your emotions. You have to cry."

                                The New Bachelor: Prince Charming

Most of the women watching The Bachelor's newest catch would not be his type: "I want someone who doesn’t sit at home watching TV," the newest reality hunk, Lorenzo Borghese, tells PEOPLE.

So what is the 34-year-old Manhattan-based cosmetics executive (and founder of the Royal Treatment Pet Spa) looking for?

"An active girl – and someone who will be with me for the right reasons and not because I'm an Italian prince," says Borghese whose New York City-based parents are Prince Francesco and Princess Amanda Borghese. (The family's title was bestowed by a 17th-century pope.)

Still, dating royalty has its privileges. Borghese, who was born in Milan but raised in New Jersey, describes his ideal outing as asking his girlfriend to pack a light bag, then piloting a private plane to an exotic locale for dinner.

"I like the look of surprise on my date’s face," he says.

                                Now, that’s amore!
