HE was covered in black from top to toe and still couldn't avoid being recognised.

It's hard to go shopping if you're Michael Jackson.

The pop star was shoe shopping in a popular Bahrain mall yesterday dressed in an abaya or full-length traditional robe worn by Arab women, sunglasses, black gloves and a veil covering his face.

But his men's shoes and pants peeping out of the abaya gave him away.

      CHILDREN

Or maybe it was his three children whose faces were wrapped in black scarves.

They drew the attention of other shoppers, who recognised the star who is popular in the Gulf state.

Photographers also spotted the 47-year-old and tried to click pictures.

'Please, no!' Jackson shouted to them before making a quick exit with the children and a woman who was with them via the back door of the mall and into a white Lexus Infinity.

The unidentified woman who was also dressed in abaya and jeans and scarf over her head, asked photographers to step back.

'You have to give us some privacy. Please, you have to understand his position, he is with his kids... you need to leave us alone,' she said.

A Bahraini official at the mall confirmed that it was Jackson. He has been spending time in the Gulf state as a guest of the royal family since a Californian court acquitted him last year of child molestation.

It has been reported that he was negotiating a position as a consultant with a Bahrain-based company that plans to set up theme parks and music academies in the Middle East.

This is not the first time Jackson has caused controversy in shopping malls. Last year he entered the ladies room in a shopping mall in the United Arab Emirates. His publicist said Jackson did not understand the Arabic sign on the door and left the bathroom as soon as he realised his mistake. - Wire services.

              Michael Jackson returns to stage

Singer Michael Jackson has appeared on stage for the first time since being acquitted of child abuse charges.

But the pop star disappointed fans by singing just a few lines of We Are The World at the World Music Awards ceremony at London's Earls Court.

The star told reporters it had been a "misunderstanding" that he would sing his hit single Thriller.

The 48-year-old also scooped a tribute award for selling over 100 million albums throughout his career.

Beyonce Knowles presented him with the award, saying: "If it wasn't for Michael Jackson, I would never ever have performed."
Jackson received a standing ovation as he walked onto the stage.

He told the audience: "I love you. God has answered my prayers.

"Thriller has become the biggest-selling album of all time, with 140 million sold. I love all the fans from the bottom of my heart. I love England."

He then left the stage to boos from the crowd who had still expected him to sing.

He had also been booed by fans outside the venue for failing to meet them when he arrived, after they had queued for several hours.

lol pari, but really i never liked his music all that much, he is overhyped mostly because of his looks and lifestyle, he is so done, he should retire, he has no staying power like the rolling stones for example.

                              Michael Joseph Jackson

Born Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary, Ind.

Jackson's initial breakthrough was at age 11 when the Jackson 5's I Want You Back scaled the chart. He embarked on a solo career in 1972 with modest-selling Got to Be There. The sizzle generated by 1979's Off the Wall went nuclear with 1982's Thriller, an unprecedented phenomenon that dominated music sales for two years and moonwalked into the record books. While never able to match Thriller's success, Jackson dominated pop for the next decade. He co-wrote 1985's all-star benefit single We Are the World; 1987's Bad generated five chart-toppers.

The singer, who was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, converted to Islam in a ceremony at a friend's house in Los Angeles.

He is said to have sat on the floor and worn a small hat while an imam officiated.

According to The Sun, the ceremony took place while Jackson, 50, was recording an album at the home of Steve Porcaro, a keyboard player who composed music on his Thriller album.

The former Jackson 5 star was counselled by David Wharnsby, a Canadian songwriter, and Phillip Bubal, a producer, who have both converted.

A source said Jackson had appeared a "bit down" and added: "They began talking to him about their beliefs, and how they thought they had become better people after they converted. Michael soon began warming to the idea.

"An imam was summoned from the mosque and Michael went through the shahada, which is the Muslim declaration of belief."

Last year his brother, Jermaine Friday, suggested Jackson would convert having taken an interest in Islam since Friday's conversion in 1989.

"When I came back from Mecca I got him a lot of books and he asked me lots of things about my religion and I told him that it's peaceful and beautiful," said Friday.

"He read everything and he was proud of me that I found something that would give me inner strength and peace.

"I think it is most probable that Michael will convert to Islam.

"He could do so much, just like I am trying to do. Michael and I and the word of God, we could do so much."
