NAZANIN AFSHIN-JAMS WINS

Former Miss Canada, Miss World runner-up and Pop singer Nazanin Afshin-Jam will be receiving the 'Hero Award for Human Rights' and delivering a speech this Friday August 25th at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The award to be presented to Nazanin by Anne Archer and Jenna Elfman will be followed by Artists for Human Rights Concert, an outdoor event open to public in Union Square Park (14th & Broadway) from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Ms. Afshin-Jam is being recognized by Artists for Human Rights (AFHR) in co-operation with Youth for Human Rights International and the International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance for the campaign she initiated to help save the life of 17 year old Nazanin Fatehi in Iran who was sentenced to death by hanging for having defended herself and her 16 year old niece from three men who attempted to rape them. Nazanin Afshin-Jam has managed to collect over 200,000 signatures on the petition she started 5 months ago. Ms. Afshin-Jam has lobbied and received support from the UN, EU and Canadian Parliament. Ms. Afshin-Jam has appeared on the cover of the Globe and Mail and has been featured on CNN, BBC, CBC and other international news agencies around the globe spreading awareness on the case of Nazanin Fatehi and the plight of women in Iran. She has created www.helpnazanin.com to keep the public up to date with the campaign. She has also dedicated her song 'Someday' to her namesake and the other oppressed youth of Iran.

A former Miss Canada says time is running out to save a young Iranian woman sentenced to death by hanging.


Nazanin Afshin-Jam is trying to help a 19-year-old woman who happens to share her first name, Nazanin Fatehi.


"She's young, she was defending herself. She's not a criminal, she's the victim," Afshin-Jam told CTV News.

Fatehi was sentenced to death in an Iranian court a year ago, after admitting to stabbing to death one of three men who tried to rape her and a 16-year-old relative. Fatehi was 17 at the time.


In June, her death sentence was stayed and a new trial ordered. The second trial is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.


According to the Iranian daily newspaper Etemaad, Fatehi and her niece were in a park outside Tehran with their boyfriends when they were approached by three men. The boys fled after the men pushed the girls to the ground. Fatehi drew a knife and stabbed one man in the arm and another in the chest, killing him.


"I say to myself, if I was still in Iran that could have been me," said Afshin-Jam.


Under Iran's strict laws on chastity, if Fatehi had allowed the men to rape her and her niece, the girls would have been subjected to 100 lashes.


If they had been married at the time they were raped they would likely have been found guilty of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning.


Self-defence is a valid defence for murder in Iran, but it depends largely on the circumstances. For example, the fact that Fatehi and her niece were in a park in the evening could have affected her defence.


"Under Shariah law, the life of a woman is worth half that of a man and therefore her testimony as well in court," explained Afshin-Jam.


Afshin-Jam, who won the Miss Canada pageant in 2003 and was born in Iran, took up the cause last year.


She has since become the figurehead of what is now an international campaign to have Fatehi freed. The European Union has denounced the death sentence and Amnesty International is lobbying for Nazanin's release.


"For some reason, when it comes to human rights cases it seems like they listen to me," she said.


Iran is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Charter of the Rights of the Child, which prohibit the execution of anyone under 18. Yet, Amnesty International has recorded 18 executions of child offenders in Iran since 1990.


Afshin-Jam set up a trust that has enabled Fatehi to have access to one of the best lawyers in the country and began a petition to present to the Iranian government.


"So far, we have over 260,000 signatures. And in the last few days, it's jumping quite a bit because of the momentum. People know that there's less than 24 hours now to get this story out," she said.


It remains to be seen whether all the international attention will influence the court in Iran, but in the past, the judiciary has bowed to pressure. In 1997, a woman who was sentenced to death by hanging for shooting a police officer who allegedly tried to rape her was later released.


Afshin-Jam says she's not able to speculate on whether her campaign is working, "but based on past cases we've seen, with enough international pressure these cases of executions are stayed and the woman is often released."


Afshin-Jam is encouraging Canadian to go to her website, HelpNazanin.com and sign the petition and fax personal letters to Iranian officials, "to put pressure on them to do the right thing on January 10th."

نازنین افشین جم: من تو ايران به دنيا اومدم ووقتی انقلاب شد يک ساله بودم که اول به اروپا رفتيم و بعد به کانادا مهاجرت کرديم. در رشته علوم سياسی و روابط بين الملل درس خوندم. همه زندگی ام دلم می خواست به آدمها کمک کنم.

چطور شد که پات به مسايل مربوط به حقوق بشر کشيده شد؟

من هميشه حقوق بشر در قلبم مهم بود. وقتی ۱۶ سال بود در مدرسه ام يک کلاب درست کردم درباره مسايل جهانی ،مسايل روز، فکر می کردم خوبه که بچه های مدرسه از مسايلی که دور دنيا می گذره آگاه باشند. در دانشگاه با صليب سرخ کار می کردم. همون موقع به مدرسه های مختلف می رفتم وراجع به حقوق بشر سخنرانی می کردم. بعد که ماجرای نازنين فاتحی را شنيدم به عنوان دختر شايسته کانادا فکر کردم که صدام رو به گوش مردم برسانم درباره حقوق بشر و فکر کردم که اين ماجرا ميتونه به من کمک کنه.

حالا که می دونيم نازنين از مجازات اعدام نجات پيدا کرده آيا هنوز هم درگير هستی با اين مسئله محاکمه اش؟

بله هنوز اين سئوال پول خون بها هست. گفتن که مجازات نمی شه، اما بايد پول خونبها رو بده اما وکيل های نازنين می گن که اوگناهکار نيست و بنابراين نبايد اين پول رو پرداخت کنه. من هم همين فکر رو می کنم بنابراين داريم سعی می کنيم که اين پول رو جمع بکنيم که نازنين فاتحی آزاد بشه، الان می خواهيم وثيقه بذاريم حدود ۴۰۰ ميليون ريال که نازنين آزاد بشه و به خانواده اش برگرده.

حالا ماجرای نازنين فاتحی رو رها می کنيم وبه سراغ نازنين افشين جم می ريم. از خودت بيشتر بگو، چه کارها می کنی، شنيديم که کار موسيقی هم می کنی در مورد آلبومت برای ما بگو؟

آلبومم بايد يک سال پيش می آمد بيرون اما به دليل اين ماجرای مربوط به نازنين فاتحی مشغول بودم و روی آلبومم کار نکردم. اما در ماه آوريل اين آلبوم با نام someday يا يک روزی بيرون مياد.

سابقه موسيقی ات چيه اصلا از کجا اين کار را ياد گرفتی؟

من از تو خونه. چون از بچگی مامان من موزيک همه جای دنيا رو تو خونه پخش می کرد. مثلا از فرانسه، يا ايران و يا لبنان وهمه جا موزيک داشت و من خيلی گوش می دادم. يادم می ياد اينقدر موزيک پخش می کرد که خواهرم از خونه بيرون ميرفت و ميگفت که ديگه حوصله ندارم موزيک گوش کنم. اما من بعد از اينکه دختر شايسته شدم تصميم گرفتم که صدام رو بلندتربه گوش همه برسونم. ودرمورد بی عدالتی حرف بزنم. برای همين خوانندگی رو انتخاب کردم و حالا بايد ديد که مردم هم دوست دارند موزيک من رو.

من شعرهام روخودم می نويسم و آهنگها رو به کمک شوهر خواهرم، ريکو باهم می سازيم.

فارسی رو کجا يادگرفتی اگه يک سالت بوده از ايران بيرون اومدی؟

همه می فهمن که من از يک سالگی بيرون اومدم ازايران( خنده) ، ما تو خونه زياد فارسی حرف نمی زنيم و اين تقصير مادر و پدرمن هست که زياد فارسی حرف نمی زنن توخونه.

نوشتن وخوندن چی؟

خوندن و نوشتن هم نمی تونم ولی اميدوارم به کلاس برم ياد بگيرم ، چون خيلی مهمه که فرهنگمون رو نگه داشته باشيم، ومن به اميد خدا،اگه يک روزی بچه دار بشم، حتما می ذارم مدرسه ايرانی که اگه يه روی يه مصاحبه اين طوری داشتن، بتونن فارسی حرف بزنن.

راستی نازنين بگو واکنش جوانهای ايرانی نسبت به کارهات، چه درمورد حقوق بشر، چه آهنگهات ويا زمانی که دختر شايسته شدی چه واکنشی گرفتی ازشون؟

جوونهای ايرانی به من ايميل زدند که باعث افتخار ايران شدم و نوشتن که بهشون اميد دادم که روياهاشون روعملی کنن و اين خيلی برای من مهم بود.

من بايد به شنونده ها توضيح بدم که ساعت شش صبح به وقت تورنتوست که اين مصاحبه با نازنين انجام شده و ساعت چهار صبح هم يک مصاحبه ديگه داشته با يه راديويی در تورنتو. اين روزها خيلی سرش شلوغه ، توی بخش جهانی بی بی سی هم باهات مصاحبه کردند، بيشتر راجع به چی باهات صحبت می کنن ؟ راجع به نازنين فاتحی باهام صحبت می کنن؟

بله به خصوص راجع به نازنين فاتحی چون که نجات پيدا کرد چون در دنيا همه خوشحال شدند وهمه جامثل بی بی سی و سی ان ان راجع به نازنين می پرسيديدند و ميخواستند بدونند چطور می توانند کمکش کنند.

آيا دلت می خواد که به ايران بری؟

الان فکر می کنم برای من خطرناک باشه شايد برم. اما آرزوی من اينه که به ايران برم و هموطنانم رو ببينم. به تخت جمشيد برم وهمه چيزهای خيلی خوب ايران را ببينم و می خواستم به همه کسانی که به نازنين فاتحی کمک کردند تبريک بگم وبگم که خيلی ممنون ، کاری که کردند خيلی تاثير داشت.

Almost one year ago I started a petition to help save the life of 17-year-old Nazanin Fatehi in Iran who was sentenced to death by hanging after she stabbed one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 15-year-old niece. With 340 000 petition signatures from around the world and the help of the International Committee Against Execution we have engaged, Amnesty International, the UN, Canadian Parliament, the EU, and others, we have put pressure on the Iranian Officials to spare the life of this child.



On June 1st 2006, the Head of Judiciary Ayatollah Shahroudi announced a stay of execution and called for a complete new trial.



This trial took place on January 10th, 2007. The five judges that reviewed her case determined that the act was unintentional and was indeed a case of self-defence. As a result, Nazanin was exonerated from the charge of murder, however the court also ruled that disproportionate force was used by Nazanin while trying to defend herself and her niece. Accordingly, they have asked Nazanin to pay $35,000 USD compensation 'diyeh' (blood money) to receive a pardon from the family of the deceased before she can be released from prison.



Nazanin's lawyers intend to appeal the payment of restitution but since this appeal may take several months, they have requested bail so that Nazanin may be released from prison immediately. The court has set bail in the amount of 400,000,000 Rials (approx US$45,000).



At this point, because Nazanin's family is very poor and unable to make payment of the bail or blood money your generosity is urgently requested to secure Nazanin Fatehi's freedom as soon as possible.

According to the United Nations, a child is a person under the age of 18. Despite the fact that the government of Iran has signed International Covenants that forbid them to execute anyone who has allegedly committed an offence before the age of 18, they continue to do so. Amnesty International has documented 21 executions of child offenders in Iran since 1990. In many cases, these minors have been imprisoned until the age of 18 and then executed. Currently, there are at least 25 minors on death row in Iran.
Stop Child Executions Campaign is created to raise awareness about this issue, and more importantly to put an end to one of the most heinous manifestations of the death penalty -- its use against children. It is only through pressure on the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, both internally in Iran and internationally that we can make a difference. Over the years we have witnessed child offenders being saved and even released from prison through international pressure as seen in the cases of Nazanin Fatehi and Afsaneh Norouzi.

The overwhelming international consensus that the death penalty should not apply to juvenile offenders stems from the recognition that young persons, because of their immaturity, may not fully comprehend the consequences of their actions and should therefore benefit from less severe sanctions than adults. ايرانی الاصل بودن نازنين افشين جم او ذهن او را نسبت به مسائل ايران مشغول کرد ضمن اينکه وی توضيح می دهد اصولا از نوجوانی به فعاليت های بشر دوستانه علاقه مند شد.

از جمله بازترين نمونه اين فعاليتها تلاش او برای نجات دختری بود در ايران به نام نازنين فاتحی.

نامبرده به خاطر ارتکاب قتل در حين دفاع از خود در جريان تجاوز به عنف به اعدام محکوم شده بود اما خيلی ها عفو او توسط رئيس قوه قضائيه را مرهون رايزنی های گسترده نازنين افشين جم در خارج از کشور ارزيابی کردند.

گرايش نازنين افشين جم به فعاليتهای بشردوستانه در سليقه اش نسبت به مرد مورد نظر و ايده ال او نيز تاثير گذاشته است.

آنجا که از او پرسيديم با توجه به اينکه زيبائيش می تواند گاهی زيادی حواس مردها را پرت کند، چه ويژگی را بيش از همه در يک مرد می پسندد؟ نازنين پاسخ داد که مرد مورد علاقه او مردی است با "قلبی بزرگ و مهربان".

درباره موزيک ويديوی اخير او پرسيديم تحت عنوان "يک روزی"، با اين مضمون که يک روزی بالاخره در ايران انقلاب می شود با دکلمه پايانی نازنين که اين انقلاب، انقلابی است "پيشرو".

از آنجائی که اين ويديو حاوی تصاويری از انقلاب اوکرائين و صحنه های درگيری های خيابانی مردم با حکومتهای خودکامه بود، اين بحث را با نازنين باز کرديم که آيا انقلابهای خيابانی، با توجه به فرجام انقلاب خود ايران و انقلاب اوکرائين، بهترين شيوه برای تغيير اوضاعی نامطلوب است.

نازنين در خلال اين سوال و جواب ها از چنين انقلابی دفاع کرد و اظهار داشت که اوضاع موجود در ايران نميتواند پايدار باشد.
