Paris Hilton has been reduced to a sobbing, shivering wreck in jail.

The hotel heiress - who spent her second day behind bars at California's Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood yesterday (05.06.07) - is reportedly struggling to cope behind bars.

Inside sources revealed to gossip website TMZ.com: "Paris is scared. She has been crying on the phone, saying she's not sleeping or eating.

"Paris says her cell is freezing cold. She has three little blankets and no pillow. She's using one of the blankets as a pillow.

"Paris says she has no appetite and has eaten almost nothing. She's called her lawyer and family, but found it really hard to talk because there's a recording in the background telling her, 'You have one minute left. This call is being recorded.' "

The socialite's fellow inmates have been attempting to cheer Paris up by voicing their support for her.

As she returned to her cell, prisoners struck up a chant of, "Paris! Paris! Paris!"

She reportedly smiled and waved.

Some inmates have been coming up to her cell door and one said, "You don't deserve to be here."

Another made her an origami butterfly and slid it under her door, and she was also given a drawing book.

The 26-year-old was visited by her psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy yesterday.

The Beverly Hills therapist - who has been treating Paris for the past eight months - visited the star with her lawyer Richard A. Hutton for about two hours.

Lawyer: Paris Using Jail Time To 'Reflect' On Life

Paris Hilton's lawyer told reporters Monday that the hotel heiress is doing well after spending her first night in solitary confinement at a Los Angeles County jail.

"She's using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people," Hutton said.

Hilton is serving 23 days of a 45-day jail sentence for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. She checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Hollywood socialite was sent off to her jail term with a swift kick in the pants earlier in the evening, as MTV Movie Awards host Sarah Silverman made crude jokes about Hilton.

A clearly unamused Hilton was sitting stone-faced in the audience as Silverman joked that the jail's guards would be painting the cell bars to look like a certain part of the male anatomy to make her more comfortable during her stay.

Just before that, Silverman made it a point to announce that Hilton was soon going to jail, and the audience erupted in applause and laughter.

Housed in a 12-by-8 foot cell in a special unit away from other inmates, Hilton was doing well under the circumstances, Hutton said. She is is spending 23 hours a day in a solitary cell.

Hutton said Hilton is "being punished because of her celebrity."

But being a celebrity doesn't appear to be a plus for Hilton in jail.

On Saturday, Susannah Johnson, a former inmate, told reporters inmates are upset because they believe jail officials are making room for the starlet at the expense of other inmates at the already-crowded 2,200-bed jail.

Johnson, who served one day in the facility, said Hilton should just "shut her mouth and do the time."

A sheriff's spokesman said that so far, Hilton is being cooperative and is easy to work with.

Hilton was issued an orange top and pants for her stay in jail. But Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in New York has a different take on Hilton's prison wear. On Monday the museum unveiled a new wax figure of the socialite wearing a "jail bird" outfit with black and white stripes, striking a pose.

Paris' Mum: Jail Is Good For Her

Paris Hilton's mum has spoken out about her daughter's plight.

Although Mrs Hilton is said to be "distraught" at Paris' plight, she thinks that the sentence will turn her daughter into a better person.

"Kathy thinks Paris will emerge a better person. It's only been a day" her publicist told The Mirror.

In related news, apparently Paris will be allowed to keep her hair extensions as they are "tightly wound" and so meet prison standards.

Paris Hilton Reports for Jail

Paris Hilton reported to jail late Sunday night to serve at least 23 days for violating probation.

"I am ready to face the consequences of violating probation," she said in a statement released by her lawyer. "During the past few weeks I have had a lot of time to think and have come to realize I made some mistakes.

"This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for their continued support. Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence."

Hilton's attorney, Richard A. Hutton, said in a press release that the 26-year-old heiress had "turned herself in" to begin serving the sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, south of Los Angeles.

She was booked into the jail at 11:38 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Web site, after days of partying and just hours after attending the MTV Movie Awards.

Hilton actually surrendered at the downtown L.A. Men's Central Jail at 11:15 p.m. and was transported to Lynwood, according to TMZ.com, which first reported her surrender.

The procedure at the Lynwood jail required her to surrender all her possessions and then be strip searched before being issued a uniform. She "was cooperative during the [booking] process, which included being fingerprinted, photographed [and] medically screened," a Sheriff's Department statement said.

The statement added that Hilton was issued a booking number and wristband and surrendered her personal property to custody personnel for safekeeping. She was also issued jail clothing, an orange top and pants and personal hygiene items, according to the statement. When the booking process was completed around 1 a.m., Hilton was escorted to her cell.

"Ms. Hilton will be housed in a cell by herself and will be segregated, in a special housing unit, from the general population during her stay at CRDF," the statement said.

Hilton was sentenced to jail on May 4 for violating the terms of her probation by repeatedly driving with a suspended license. She had been placed on probation after pleading no contest to reckless driving in a drunken driving case.

The judge ordered her to serve 45 days, but with good behavior she could be out in 23 days. In the jail, Hilton will have little to no contact with the general inmate population "to ensure her safety as well as the safety of the jail staff," Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore has said.

Hilton will spend approximately 23 hours a day in a 12-by-8-foot cell containing two bunks, a table, a sink, a toilet and a small window, with one hour for recreation. She will eat her meals in the cell. She could also leave her cell to meet with her attorney or to attend classes.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department held a news conference outside the Century Regional Detention Facility announcing Paris Hilton's release from prison.

According to the sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, Hilton was "reassigned" because of medical reasons.

Whitmore said, "With the help of medical personnel and doctors, it was determined that she be reassigned to a community based electronic monitoring program."

In other words, Hilton is now under house arrest. She will be confined to her home and required to wear an ankle bracelet for 40 days. The ankle bracelet has a range of 3,000 to 4,000 square feet.

If she leaves her home, Whitmore said she would most likely be remanded to court and her jail time would be bumped up to 90 days.

Hilton's not the only celebrity who has been assigned an ankle bracelet. Last month, a Los Angeles judge ordered the former "SNL" star Tracy Morgan to wear one of the bracelets for 90 days for violating probation for a drunken driving arrest. Morgan wore the bracelet while he hosted Spike TV's "Guys Choice" Awards.

"Lost" star Michelle Rodriguez turned the ankle bracelet into a fashion statement when she wore it to New York's fashion week in February of this year. Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in jail for violating probation after a drunk driving arrest in Hawaii and she was released from the Century Regional Detention Center -- where Hilton was -- almost immediately because of overcrowding.

And then there's Martha Stewart. Stewart was convicted in March 2004 on four counts of lying to investigators and obstruction of justice after selling her shares in the pharmaceutical company ImClone, days before its application for a new drug was denied. She served five months before she was placed under supervised release and required to wear an ankle bracelet for an additional five months.

When one reporter asked if Hilton was cut a break, Whitmore responded, "It's a fair statement, and I don't know if there's any way to address that...[we're] fully aware of this criticism and this action was taken."

He also said if another person, or a non-celebrity, had the same medical problem as Hilton, he or she would also have been allowed to serve time at home.

Whitmore added, "She has paid her debt to society."

The hotel heiress made her exit early this morning.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was released from prison on Thursday for medical reasons after serving just over three days of a 23-day sentence but she will be confined to her home for 40 days, officials said.

Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office said Hilton had been "reassigned" but he declined to identify her medical condition for privacy reasons.


"With extensive consultation with medical personnel it was decided this reassignment should be done," Whitmore said at a news conference.

Hilton, a symbol of privilege and American celebrity culture, was serving a sentence for violating probation after being caught driving with a suspended license. She will have to wear an electronic monitoring device on her ankle to ensure she does not go out for the next 40 days.

One reporter described Hilton's job as going to parties and events and asked if she would be allowed to leave her home for work, just as lifestyle media star Martha Stewart could during her five months under house arrest for insider trading.

"My understanding is that she's confined to her home with an ankle bracelet, she cannot leave that facility," said Whitmore. "She will fulfil the remainder of her time confined to her home."

The 26-year-old hotel Hilton Hotel heiress and star of reality television show "The Simple Life" was originally sentenced to 45 days in prison. That was later reduced to 23 days under state sentencing guidelines.

Hilton was arrested on charges of drunken driving in September. In January, she pleaded no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- to a reduced charge of alcohol-related reckless driving. She was sentenced to three years' probation and had her license suspended.

But she was caught driving on a suspended license in February, when police stopped her for speeding and with her headlights off at night. A traffic court judge ruled on May 4 that Hilton's latest offence constituted a probation violation.

Hilton turned herself in late on Sunday night, just hours after attending the MTV Movie Awards near Hollywood, where she was the butt of comedians' jokes.

She was released in the early hours of Thursday and Whitmore said she would be credited with five days incarceration, including Sunday and Thursday, even though she actually only spent three full days in prison.

Before she entered prison, a contrite Hilton, whose great-grandfather, Conrad, started the global Hilton Hotel empire, was photographed carrying a Bible.

"This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make ... Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence," she said.

She was housed in a unit for celebrities and high-profile inmates at a prison in Lynwood, about 15 miles (24 km) from Los Angeles.

Hecht said Hilton was kept alone in her cell, an enclosure 8 feet (2.4 meters) wide, 12 feet (3.7 meters) deep and 8 feet (2.4 meters) high, equipped with two bunks, a sink, a small table, a slit window and a metal toilet.

Hilton's booking photo showed her dressed in a white V-neck top, wearing eye makeup and lip gloss with a slight smile, her blond hair swept to one side over her right shoulder.

What has Paris apparently disturbed is the fact that she hasn't been able to sleep as her cell is "freezing cold', and has not been eating properly because she has lost her appetite.

And while there are some inmates who have been telling Paris that she doesn't deserve to be behind bars for her offence, there are others who have had less sympathy, according to the Sun.

"The spoiled brat isn't handling it well at all. For her first two nights Paris has been crying like a baby. Everyone can hear her wailing through the walls. Her neighbours - the murderers - had a long conversation with her to try and shut her up," a source told the British paper.

"They told her she's not going to be there for that long and to deal with it. Paris looks nothing like the Barbie doll you see on TV. She looks like she hasn't has a wash since she's been in there and her hair is all tangled up. But everyone is treating her like some princess.

"When she came in she was given brand new jail issue clothing - not the old washed stuff everyone else gets.

"She's getting extra blankets, extra coffee and food from the cafeteria. And the screws are even calling her Ms Hilton instead of her last name. It's not on," the source added.

However, pals of the heiress, as well as her attorney Richard A. Hutton, insist that they are worried about her.

"It's hell in there - we're all worried about her," a pal said.

"Because of who she is, they had no choice - and believe me, we are more interested in her safety more than anything else - but they had no choice but to place her in administrative segregation," Hutton had earlier said.

"The one hour of the day she's out, she is allowed to ... take a shower or talk on the phone. But she's in isolation for 23 of the 24 hours of the day," he added. "And ask yourself, for what? For driving on a suspended license as a probation violation. This is unjust, unfair, and she really is, unfortunately, a victim of a system that we pride so much on being fair. But for Paris Hilton it is not. Finally, my client's reaction to this has been fantastic. I'm very, very proud of her," Hutton said.

Hours after Paris Hilton was sent home under house arrest Thursday, the judge who put her in jail for violating her reckless-driving probation ordered her into court to determine whether she should be put back behind bars.

Hilton must report to court at 9 a.m. Friday, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told The Associated Press.

"My understanding is she will be brought in in a sheriff's vehicle from her home," Parachini said.

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer issued his order after the city attorney filed a petition late Thursday afternoon questioning whether Sheriff Lee Baca should be held in contempt of court for releasing Hilton on Thursday morning.

The celebrity inmate was sent home from the Los Angeles County jail's Lynwood lockup shortly after 2 a.m. for an unspecified medical condition in a stunning reduction to her original 45-day sentence.

She was ordered to finish her sentence under house arrest, meaning she could not leave her four-bedroom, three-bath home in the Hollywood Hills until next month.

"What transpired here is outrageous," county Supervisor Don Knabe told The Associated Press, adding that he received more than 400 angry e-mails and hundreds more phone calls from around the country.

Hilton's return home gives the impression of "celebrity justice being handed out," he said.

City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo complained that he learned of her release the same way as almost everyone else - through news reports.

"It is the city attorney's position that the decision on whether or not Ms. Hilton should be released early and placed on electronic monitoring should be made by Judge Sauer and not the Sheriff's Department," said Jeffrey Isaacs of the city attorney's office.

Sauer himself had expressed his unhappiness with Hilton's release before Delgadillo asked him to return her to court. When he sentenced Hilton to jail last month, he ruled specifically that she could not serve her sentence at home under electronic monitoring.

Parachini said Sauer reminded the Sheriff's Department of that when he learned Hilton was about to be released.

"He reiterated the terms of his sentencing order. He did not agree to the terms of release that the sheriff proposed," Parachini told the AP before Delgadillo asked that Hilton be returned to court.

But, Parachini said at the time, it is the sheriff and not the judge who decides when inmates are released from jail.

Delgadillo's office indicated that it would argue that the Sheriff's Department violated Sauer's May 4 sentencing order.
