    Aishwarya Rai

Two of the biggest stars in Bollywood, the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of their particular movie scene, are going to tie the knot. Sometimes called the most beautiful woman in the world, Aishwarya Rai will marry her fellow Indian movie star Abhishek Bachchan. The couple announced their engagement yesterday after weeks of speculation.

Aishwarya Rai was Miss World and has been on the cover of Time Magazine. Abhishek Bachchan is less well-known worldwide, but is huge in the Indian community. He is the son of Amitabh Bachchan, a living legend in the world of Bollywood cinema. Abhishek is 30 and Aishwarya is 33. According to the Telegraph, Bachchan and Rai were engaged in a private ceremony on Sunday at the Bachchan residence in Bombay after astrologers declared that the day was auspicious. Amitabh told CNN IBN, "I was the first person he called once the engagement had been made. I am really happy and delighted for them."

Word leaked out about the ceremony and, according to reports from the Telegraph, thousands of fans and well-wishers started to crowd around the gates of the Bachchan residence, dancing, singing, and weeping through out the night. A fan told the BBC, "Their engagement happened late but it is great that they have decided to get married. Nothing can be better than this for them both."

Another fan spoke to the BBC, "One is a former Miss World, while Abhishek is Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan's son, so both are high profile and suited for each other."

Not everyone is ecstatic. A young female fan also spoke to the BBC about her feelings on losing the single status of the Bollywood icon, "I don't like Aishwarya Rai and I don't like their pairing. Abhishek is so good, he should remain a bachelor for sometime as his career is just taking off. I also think he should marry someone younger, he can get a more beautiful woman than Aishwarya!"

Komal Nahta, a Bollywood expert told the BBC that he doesn't think the marriage will be the end of Aishwarya Rai's acting career, although it's worth noting that she has signed fewer contracts for films in recent months and doesn't have many new releases waiting to come out. "I don't think she will give up acting, she will continue to pursue her career as Aishwarya Bachchan."

Rai and Bachchan can actually be seen on screen together right now in Guru, a film that just opened in Toronto, a film that caused the Bollywood press to assume that marriage for the two was a foregone conclusion because their on-screen chemistry was so strong. They have actually starred in a few films together but none have been big box office hits. Last November, the couple visited a temple in the holy city of Varanasi to work out their astrological differences and the rumors of an impending engagement really heated up.

Bollywood movie stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are engaged and will marry later this year, the former Miss World's manager confirmed Monday, ending months of speculation about their relationship.

Rai and Bachchan exchanged engagement rings in a small ceremony before a small group of relatives and friends late Sunday, Hari Singh told The Associated Press.

"Yes, it is true. Abhishek and Aishwarya are engaged," Singh said. "The wedding will definitely take place this year."

There has been speculation for several months about the love lives of the two actors, and news of their engagement was the top story in several Indian newspapers. The Times of India newspaper reported the wedding would take place in February or March.

"The children (Abhishek and Aishwarya) have decided (to marry)," Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood legend and Abhishek's father, told The Times of India. "We are very happy."

Abhishek Bachchan, 31, and Rai, 33, have worked together in several movies.

In "Guru," Bachchan plays a man from a small Indian village who works his way to becoming a top industrialist and Rai plays his supportive wife.

The two also starred in a period drama "Umrao Jaan," "Kuch Na Kaho" or "Say No More" and "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke" or "Two and A Half Words of Love."

Rai has acted in more than 30 movies.

Bachchan comes from a famous Bollywood movie family -- his father, Amitabh, and mother, Jaya, are among India's best known actors.

Beltangady, Jan 20: "We would soon be announcing the date of Abhishek and Aishwarya's wedding. It will be official soon," said Krishnaraj Rai, father of bollywood actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai.

He was speaking to the press after visiting Shri Manjunatheshwara Temple at Dharmasthala near here on Friday January 19.

He further said that his visit to Mangalore and Aishwarya's wedding had nothing to do since the visit was planned much earlier. "However it is purely a coincidence that we came after Aishwarya's engagement," he added.

He also said that it is a great honour that Aishwarya would soon become the daughter-in-law of Bachchan family. "We are very proud about her and feel happy for her," he said.

Aishwarya's mother Vrinda Rai and a few other close relatives of the family too were present. They visited the Temple and offered pooja before meeting Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade in his residence.

Later the family travelled to Kasargod to offer elaborate rituals and poojas.

No matter how big a celebrity you are, blessings of the Almighty are always sought before a special occasion and the case of the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai is no different.

With Ash all set to tie the knot with Abhishek Bachchan , the actress's mother Vrinda Rai has performed a special puja at Nagabana in Sonthady near Kasargod, her birthplace.

The puja was performed Thursday morning by Vrinda in keeping with the traditions of Tulunadu culture is an annual affair, a close relative of Ash said on condition of anonymity in Mangalore on Friday.

All members of the family, except for Ash, took part in the puja to 'moola nagadevata bana' at Sonthady, the relative said.

Ash's father Krishnarajendra Rai arrived in Mangalore from Mumbai Thursday morning and performed puja in the temple of Dharmasthala, he said.

Ash and Abhishek got engaged at a quiet ceremony in Mumbai on January 14. The engagement came about one-and- half-months after the couple, accompanied by mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan , offered prayers at the Varanasi temple.

All eyes turned to Bangalore when Ash's family astrologer Chandrashekhara Swami, based in Mulky, was consulted on the alliance as Ash had 'Kuja dosha'.

Even though their wedding date is still to be fixed, newly engaged Bollywood couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan are being sought to spend their honeymoon in Europe.

It is learnt that French and Switzerland tourism boards are eager to provide sponsored honeymoon holidays for the couple in Europe.

Swiss tourism, for instance, is learnt to have offered the couple a free stay in an igloo suite that has private Jacuzzi and sauna. The package also includes hot mulled wine, appetizers and other mouth-watering delicacies.

On the other hand, RailEurope wants Ash and Abhi to ride in their luxury trains.

There has also been an offer of first-class eight-day commuters passes for the couple. Using this pass the couple can use public transportation (rail, boat and trams) on their sightseeing trips.

However, as of now, we are still awaiting the announcement of their wedding date.

                  Bollywood couple's low-key wedding disappoints celebrity-mad India

THE celebrations had transfixed Bollywood and sent India's celebrity-crazy media into a feeding frenzy.

But for fans, yesterday's union between India's most beautiful woman, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, and Abhishek Bachchan, son of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, was a let-down.

The Bachchans, the first family of Bollywood, had decided against the usual Indian over-the-top extravaganza, settling instead for a private event with 100 to 150 close friends and family.

That left police preparing for the worst. Extra fire extinguishers were on hand in case fanatical fans of Amitabh — who is adored and revered in equal measure — decided to set fire to themselves out of disappointment at seeing nothing of the most glamorous union the country has ever seen.

Even as the two prepared to complete the three days of ceremonies yesterday a fan took drastic action. A woman claiming to be the lover of Bachchan slashed her wrist in front of the actor's home.

She told reporters she wanted to kill herself because Bachchan had gone back on his promise to marry her.

Police later arrested the woman, who they said was a struggling fashion model. They said she had no proof of the relationship and could be playing out a publicity stunt.

The only glimpse Indians had in the lead-up to the wedding was of the flowers decorating the big wooden gate of the Mumbai bungalow where the Bachchans live and a silver palanquin being carried inside for the 33-year-old bride. About 400 security guards and huge contingents of Mumbai police kept out prying eyes.

Neighbours with views over the bungalow were asked not to allow photographers to peep in and the guests — much like Liz Hurley's guests at her nuptials with Arun Nayar — were sworn to secrecy.

Rumours that Bollywood was going the way of Western celebrities with the Bachchans having sold the rights of the wedding to an international magazine proved unfounded.

A family friend said the Bachchans regarded such an idea as "demeaning". But in terms of glamour and big names, the quiet three-day affair to celebrate the union was a gathering of the who's who of India. Top industrialists, film stars and politicians attended.

The most conspicuous absence was that of the other big dynasty that dominates Indian life as much as the Bachchans — Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi and her children.

The two families used to be inseparable. It was Amitabh's mother, Teji, who gave Sonia away at her wedding to Rajiv.

Their children grew up together. The family albums are full of shared picnics, dinners and holidays. But at some point after Rajiv's assassination, a rift occurred between Sonia and the Bachchans. They have been estranged since.

Speculation was rife that the Gandhis would be invited, but the Bachchans evidently decided to seal the estrangement.

The "sangeet" (music) ceremony on Wednesday where traditionally everyone lets their hair down and has a rollicking time — rocking to Bollywood hits — went on past 3am.

Thursday saw the "mehndi" (henna) ceremony and yesterday was the wedding — quite short compared with the week-long Hurley-Nayar marathon.

The gold-embossed invitation cards were four-pages long and came in a box, accompanied by flowers and traditional Indian sweets.

The henna was brought in especially from Rajasthan, the brocade silk saris were from Benares and the white tents air-conditioned.

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan finally tie the knot

The big day has finally arrived and the bride Ash and groom Abhi are contented and happy to tie the knot. The festivities began on 18 April and will culminate with the wedding on 20 April. There was revelry and celebration bollywood style for the sangeet, mehndi and now for the wedding too. Only a select few like Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta, Suniel Shetty, Sonali Bendre etc from bollywood were invited for this happy but private occasion. The media and crazy fans were kept at bay. However no one could exclude themselves from this joyous occasion and fans from all over the city trooped in to catch a glimpse of Ash, Abhi and other bollywood celebs.

The sangeet was complete bollywood style with both the Rais and Bachchans as well as their friends putting up dance performances. The highlight of the sangeet was a dance performance put up by Ash-Abhi and another dance performance by Amitabh-Jaya. There was plenty of laughter, food and happiness all around the couple. On the day of the wedding, the baraat left Jalsa to move towards the venue of the wedding, Prateeksha at 4 pm. The guests were taken by bus but en route the groom got off the bus and climbed onto his white horse. Abhishek wore a heavy white outfit filled with beautiful work and his face was covered with the traditional flowers. But no one could miss Abhi’s enthusiasm and happiness as he swayed to the music along with his baraatis who danced en route to Prateeksha. Abhi’s sister Shweta was also seen gyrating with the baraatis while dad Amitabh was supervising the entire event. Amitabh did seem a bit exasperated though when his guests spent too much time dancing as erratic fans seemed very keen to join them.

Finally the baraatis reached the venue and the mahurat for the wedding was 5.30 pm. The rituals began and the wedding had both Ash’s south customs as well as Abhi’s north Indian customs incorporated. There was no Kanyadan (where the bride is given away by the father) as it is not a custom followed in the South to which Ash belongs. There was the North Indian style exchange of garlands, then there was also some customs according to the South, Bunt style. There was a sindoor ceremony and the saat pheras. Ash looked resplendent in a kanjivaram saree adorned with diamond jewelry and flowers in her head. Jalsa and Prateeksha too were decked out with flowers. There were high security measures both around and within the venue for the wedding due to the VIP guest list. Traffic almost came to a halt while the baraat was en route, fans clamored for a glimpse of stars and the media too tried to get a piece of all the action. The auspicious ceremony took place in private with only close friends and family and the reception too was extremely private. No doubt though that the guests were extremely well taken care of by the Bachchans. Well congratulations to Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, we wish them a happy life together!

                      Costume Drama

The wedding dresses are out of the closet: sari designed by Neeta Lulla for Rai, a Jani-Khosla sherwani for Bachchan and a Kolkata hand too

                      Paromita Chakrabarti

The Bachchanalia has begun. The couple have learnt the tango steps, the invites had been sparingly distributed, the public was reduced to looking at the thoran at the door for the Little B Wedding. Inside the designer dresses came out of the closet for the hero and the heroine. The couple — Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan — may be stars, but then, so are the clothes.

The sangeet ceremony kick-started the celebrations at Prateeksha, the Bachchan residence in Juhu, where the newlyweds will set up home. The outfits for the Bachchans, as expected, have been done by their favourite designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, and Rai’s costumes by Neeta Lulla. “I did her wedding outfit, but I wouldn’t like to speak about it since it is such a personal affair for them,” Lulla told us earlier. The designer has not only created the hand-woven sari with golden zari embroidery for the wedding yesterday, but is also responsible for Rai’s mehndi outfit — a red zari-embroidered lehnga-choli.

The henna for the wedding was brought especially from Sojat, Rajasthan, because of its deeper hue, which is considered auspicious.

At the sangeet, Rai went by her in-laws’ choice: she wore an outfit created by Jani-Khosla. Abhishek’s wedding sherwani too has been crafted by Jani-Khosla. The buzz is that Jaya Bachchan had gifted heavily embroidered saris to family friends and relatives.

The Rais, meanwhile, have gifted Abhishek, Amitabh and Nikhil Nanda shawls and hand-woven kantha sherwanis by Kolkata designer Sharbari Dutta. “They had asked for bright colours and heavy work on the kurtas. Brinda Rai had sent me the measurements,” Dutta revealed.

Even designer Hemant Trivedi, Rai’s bosom buddy since her modelling days, has done some outfits for the trousseau. However, in deference to their long-standing friendship, Trivedi chose not to divulge the details.

Aishwarya Rai's secretary goes emotional on her wedding

JAIPUR: Aishwarya's secretary, who has been with the Bollywood star since she joined the film industry, is willing to serve the actor as long as she wants.

"It is left to Abhishek and Aishwarya to decide. I have been with her since she joined the industry and would continue supporting her and rendering my services, if needed," Hari Singh said from Mumbai when asked whether he would continue as Aishwarya's secretary after her marriage.

Singh could not hide his emotions while describing Aishwarya's marriage as the 'happiest moment' in his life.

"It is the happiest moment for me. My association with her is quite long as she has been a daughter to me and she too has always given me respect like a father," he said.

"This is life. You spent some time with your daughters and later they get married and become daughters of two families," said Singh, who had also served as secretary to Sridevi and Padmini Kolhapure.

Jhanvi's mother says she knew of Abhishek

Mother of Jhanvi Kapoor alias Naina Rizvi, Shaheena Nasir, claimed that she knew of her daughter's relationship with Abhishek Bachhan.

"Yes, I knew of Naina's affair with Abhishek. But I always told her to bury it since she was a Muslim and her marriage with a Hindu could result in social embarrassment for us," Shaheena said from her uptown residence in Srinagar.

Naina's mother and son live in Srinagar's posh Raj Bagh locality.

Shaheena is married to a retired local bureaucrat, Agha Nasir, a former Union labour secretary. She married Nasir after a divorce from her first husband Mohsin Rizvi. She had four daughters from Mohsin, one of them being Naina.

The two elder daughters stayed with their father, while the younger ones came to Kashmir along with their mother in 1982.

Agha Nasir avoided comments about his step-daughter, but said she had been married to Shia cleric Kalbe Sadiq's son from Lucknow and they had a ten-year-old son, who goes to school in Srinagar.

Hours before the high-profile Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai wedding on Friday, a young actor slashed her wrist in an alleged suicide bid after claiming that she was married to Abhishek.

Janhvi Kapoor, who had done a minor role in an Abhishek film, Dus, appeared outside "Prateeksha," scene of the wedding celebrations, and inflicted injuries on her wrist after a dose of sleeping pills.

She claimed she was married to Abhishek. As she bled profusely police took her to the Cooper Hospital and later to the Juhu police station where she gave a written statement.

Police arrested her and slapped a case of attempted suicide against her. She was later released on bail on a surety of Rs. 10,000.

Janhvi held forth on her claim that Abhishek married her in December last by applying "sindoor" on her forehead and promising formal solemnisation after he got a Filmfare award. — PTI

                          Shujaat Bukhari reports from Srinagar:

Janhvi Kapoor alias Naina Rizvi's claim that she had an affair with Abhshek has been supported by her mother who lives in Srinagar with the actor's 10-year-old son.

As the news about Janhvi's attempt to commit suicide spread in Srinagar, journalists rushed to her mother Shameema Nasir's house in Rajbagh locality.

"I knew of Naina's affair with Abhishek. But I always told her to not to do it since she was a Muslim and her marriage with a Hindu could result in a social embarrassment," she said.

Shameema is married to Agha Nasir, a retired bureaucrat, after a divorce from her first husband Mohsin Rizvi.

She, according to the Agha family, had four daughters and two came with their mother and are pursuing their education in London after studying in Srinagar.

Naina was married to Kalbe Hussain, son of a prominent Shia cleric Kalbe Sadiq in Lucknow. Even as Shameema denied he was Naina's son, family sources said that he was born to Naina.
